I think Pimsleur is a good starting point for learning a language, but to be honest I wouldn't rely on it exclusively. My old pimsleur Cantonese cd's got me used to hearing and responding to a language I really won't hear anywhere else (i'm in the middle of the Mojave desert for goodness' sake xd ) Personally, I liked the drilling that they make you go through. I'm not the worst of audial learners, but I usually don't learn as well without multiple types of learning exposure. The constant repetition and surprise reviews helped to ratify that problem I think.
at the same time, they make it sound a LOT easier than it really is. 'learn in 10 days' is total bull, but that doesn't mean it's a bad way to learn

I've only used it in class for Japanese, so I personally think it's a decent way to practise speaking skills. You should really only use it as a supplementary, not rely on it exclusively, as there are many times when you really need to know at least the basics of the language or you won't really learn the language. Like there'll be a question that you're expected to answer, and there are different ways to do it - if you have no prior knowledge, you may think that is the only way to answer the question.

I personally love Pimsleur. I have the French one, and it really works for me. Everyone's different, of course, so try the samples on the website. It also helps if you get a textbook for the language you are learning to complement it.

Freak Couture Whats your opinion of the Pimsleur programs? If you have used them or know of them.I'm thinking of getting on for German and was curious if it was worth it. sweatdrop Pimsleur isn't that great, but it's also one of the cheaper language learning programs. It teaches basic phrases and a few words, but that's about it.

Pimsleur is good if you want to tip-toe into a language and its good if you can't find any other audio in that language. It isn't designed to get you speaking fluently with a speaker, just a few things to get you started. It starts with a conversation and builds upon it until you can at least say hello, tell someone you can't speak their language very well or know very little of it, and a few other things that help you understand why the language is different in sound by itself. And the way they teach you helps you remember for a long time after. Still, I would suggest borrowing it from your local Library. It isn't something that you should own if you want to become fluent in a language and it allows you to be cheap enough to afford other language learnin supplies.
