(( Satou and Gaara :: July 08 2005 ))
Saty was sitting comfortably in a chair in the livingroom. She had conveniently placed herself so that she could see out the window, which meant that she was hanging over the arm, looking thoroughly bored... she gave a half a sigh, completely focused on a tree...
Gaara, on one of his semi-escapes from the apartment, had somehow managed to find himself once again in the Jivvin center. Oh, he had no idea why or how he had ended up there once again, he just .. did. And how annoyed he was, his grumbled under his breathe hoping that he wouldn't once again run into that stupid brown Jivvin like he always did... every damn time.
His cool mint eyes glanced about the surroundings, finding three Jivvin he had most certainatly never seen before. Well, actually.. he'd never met others before. He stared oddly at the two younger ones, focusing on the one crazy hyper one and let out a small hiss. Small hyper things .. and small hyper ones that crash into things. Bah. The tan Jivvin's attention turned to the one staring at trees. Seemed older, seemed calm... seemed ... sane.
Saty became vaguely aware of someone staring at her... "Take a picture it'll last longer... " She leaned over backwards so she could see Alexander and give him a dirty look, but... it wasn't Alexander... it was a new Jivvin.
Saty closed her eyes and mentally yelled at herself. Here she was trying to be a nicer jivvin and instead she was being unexcusably rude to random strangers... great start...
She sat up and turned to him... "I'm sorry... I... I thought you were my cousin, he was sitting there earlier and he was... he was just staring.. and.. and.. I'm sorry... But I think I said that... And..." She stopped and realized she was stammering.... "I guess that means I meant it and I'll stop talking now." Sigh.
Gaara opened his mouth for a moment, ready to retort back at her but instantly stopped as she went into a flood of apologies. "Whatever..." He shrugged, eyes closing with the least of cares. With a quick flick of his tail, he repositioned himself in hopes of finding a more comfortable, well, position upon the floor.
Saty closed her eyes and cursed at herself... He was offended she just knew it. Nobody liked a jerk, and here she was being a jerk. She dropped into the chair with a snort, and opened her eyes... He wasn't doing much.... "I'm Satou."
Opening one black outlined eye, Gaara glanced at Satou questionably. Aa, so she was attempting to engage in conversation? Or maybe just introductions. "Gaara." Simply came his reply, opening the other eye to make a better impression of himself. Like he cared that much, but never hurt to try.
Gaara just hoped she wouldn't be expecting great discussions at length with someone as socially inempt as he was.
Saty saw him open his eyes.... one at a time, but that was better than nothing... and his name was Gaara. She thought she might have heard that name around the center from a few jivvins... vaguely... she wasn't much one to jump into conversation... He didsn't seem much into convo either.
She sat for a few moments, glancing back at the tree several times... before she another line of conversation came to her... it wasn't poetry... "I've never seen you here before... "
Gaara was one to find silence uncomfortable and didn't mind as she drifted back to looking at the trees. He himself had begun to stare around the center, looking at the objects he missed on most visits - as Naruto always took up his attention. And then conversation was brought up again.
"Don't get out much, my guardian likes to keep me sheltered or something. I've only been here maybe once or twice...." Another tail flick, wrapping it around his paws.
Saty smiled and closed her eyes... "I don't come here much anyway. People here don't much like me... I'm... I'm mean. she stared at the tree outside... "I live in a tree in my mother's... " she cringed at the word... she was doing that a lot lately... calling Keppit her mother and it was accidental. "Backyard... It's nice and secluded and I don't have to talk to anyone."
Gaara's ears flattened for a moment at the mentioning of seclusion and whatnot, wait.. was he bothering her? Well, wait... she was the one to talk to him, so he probably wasn't, right?
"Don't seem to be that mean," He snorted and half coughed, "At least you're not...." Oh, was he stopping right there now. She did not need to know about what Naruto tried to do to him, thankyouverymuch. Oh, but she'd be wondering, "not," He began again to cover his blurt out, eyes darted about trying to think of something, "beating me upside the head or something..." Gawd, even he knew that was a lame cover-up.
"seclusion seems nice though... would be so nice to get away from that damn apartment..." and crazy chiri and the crazy other Gaara. Shudder.
Saty smiled to herslef and stared out the window. "I used to be more mean. It's sort of a goal I have to make myself better." She glanced down at him and then back out the window. "My treehouse is high and quiet... but I got lonely living completely alone. My friend... well... sort of my little sister, kind of. She moved in with me because the others didn't want her marching aroud the house all the time." Saty sighed. "It's actually kind of nice to have her around."
"Don't see why you should make it a goal or something, if people can't like you for who you are then thats their problem," The tan Jivvin shrugged again, eyes glancing around the room again. His tail flicked again, eyes returning to Satou for a moment to then glance out the damn window she kept looking out of.
"Are you waiting for something?"
Saty turned her head and looked at him... She had made it a goal because... because she hadn't liked herself.... but he didn't need to know that.... but was she waiting for something? She turned her head and looked outside... "No... not really. I was just staring at that tree.... I don't know why. I guess I was jsut bored out of my skull."
Eyebrow raise. "Mmmkay, sounds fair enough..." Well, he guessed i did, he wasn't one to be really sure about that as he was usually bored out of his mind as well. How the hell did he cope with things?
"Could always just find something to do..." Like terrorize things? That sometimes worked, for him at least. Well, all he got to were ants and stuff, but that didn't matter.
She gave a devious grin. terrorizing and torturing things was one of her favorite past times... "What kind of terrorizing?" She tried to pick on her sprite and her siblings, but they all pretty much just took what she dished out.... it really wasn't as fun with them... but maybe Garra had some better ideas?

(( Gus, Spawn, Lysius, Kryos, and Satou :: Feb 08 09 ))
The walk had taken several hours, including the occasional pauses to double-check their trail. Spawn offered little conversation--he wasn't much for talking, it seemed--but replied readily enough if Gus struck up a chat. He seemed to be in a good mood, for the most part, but occasionally grew frustrated by the antics of the trees. The forest was being especially difficult with them, but sticking to the hidden path helped; the path was meant as a means of shortening the trip by days. One step was something akin to a hundred yards or more, and thus it was much more difficult for the trees to change about to divert the hikers. But they certainly tried.
Thus is came as something of a surprise when homes did appear through the trees, scattered at first, one every several minutes, and then more frequent, lined up on either side as path bled into road. However, their arrival had not gone unnoticed; at the foot of the dirt road which opened to the Village main, a line of Sargtlins awaited their arrival. Their poses were casual, unconcerned, but it was nonetheless a rather intimidating picture--especially when several Uuthli dropped to the road behind the pair, forming a line parallel to the Sargtlins.
Klu'chud, for all the world as unconcerned as the Sargtlins, gestured Gus forward. "Perhaps you should introduce us."
Gus had walked along behind Spawn, uncomplaining and offering obsevations of the obvious kind whenever a plant or rock struck him as odd. The poor guy knew very little about the woodlands and survival, and he knew even less about the village and what went on there or how to get there. He trusted his new friend though, and walked along complacently behind him, stepping where he was told and doing as he was prompted.
When the village appeared, Gus smiled to himself. He'd been here before, but only briefly and that was years ago. His smile faded as the Sargtlins faced them down and broke into a deep frown as it became apparent that it was his move. Gus took a tentative step back and stammered...
"I'm ... Um... Gus Kalhoun, I'm..." He thought about the last time he had been here with Jack, and figured that maybe to the point was better. "I'm Gus... Kalhoun.... Saty... Satou Kalhoun... mysisterthough.... She's not Kalhoun anymore... Satou is my sister." He stopped and let out the breath that he'd been partially holding. glancing back at Spawn, he realized that he was proabbly not helping them any with all his stammering.
"I... we... came here looking for help from the village. We have news for the villagers, and I wanted to talk to my sister, Satou." He nodded. Sure he'd already said half of that in his stammering, but it felt good to get it all out in one sentance.... kind of.
A distinct ripple went through the group at the mention of Satou's name, but just as quickly they recovered, stoically holding their positions in line. One, however, obviously in charge of the small group, stepped forward to direct the conversation. His eyes slid briefly over Gus, quickly dismissing him as no threat, before passing on towards Spawn. He smirked. "Your mother's been looking for you, Klu'chud."
If the jab was taken to heart, Klu'chud gave no sign. He kept his tone calm as he replied, "By this warm welcome, I had anticipated as much. I would assume, then, that rooms will have already been prepared for us, for I trust her visit offered no cause for alarm?"
A long pause followed, during which the tall Sargtlin considered the pair. Lysius had informed him that he was to intercept the Daewl, to interrogate and disarm him if necessary, but there seemed no need to subject the Afya to the same. Zelda had been all but frantic when she spoke with the Sargtlin Council member, Lysius had mentioned, rattling on about how her son was a madman, how the Village was in danger--but could give no real examples to verify her claims. Certainly, he was the son of Scion, and that alone was cause for caution--but Scion had also been possessed, and had offered no further trouble in the time since.
"We have news for the Council," Klu'chud added to break the silence.
Coming to a decision, the Sargtlin nodded shortly and, gesturing to his men, turned on a heel and led the way down the dirt road, the others falling into line on either side of the pair as the Uuthli disbanded as silently as they had come. Satou smiled as she leaned back against the countertop, arms folded lightly across her chest as she thought for a moment. Gus was here, alive and well for the time being. She'd had a few worries about him when he hadn't met her in the forest weeks ago like he'd said he would, but all that was dispelled at haveing seen him and even given him a quick hug before he was taken off to be questioned. She knew they wouldn't hurt him, he was Gus... it was difficult to even think of hurting Gus... he was... too.... cute? She laughed and looked up at her husband with a genuine smile.
"It's so good to see him again... he hasn't changed at all!" She let her arms fall to her sides as she stood and strode over to Lysius. "Of course it hasn't been 70 years for him, just for me." She reached up and touched a slightly greying lock of the man's hair. "It's good to see someone exactly the same as the way I left them." She didn't mean it as an insult or even a barb, just trying to let him know that she was sorry for making him wait for her all those years... even if it wasn't all her fault.
Then she stepped back with a grin. "And now you've met my brother! I've two of them, though as I've told you, the other one isn't a jivvin, he's adopted..." She faded off. "We used to be the same age, Gus and I ... hatched on the same day even... not anymore..." She smiled up at Lysius once more, "Funny thing? We all figured Gus would get married before I would."
She faded into her own thoughts again, finding it reasonably difficult to focus on anything other than the fact that she was seeing her brother again for the first time in over 70 years.... "It's just... so strange and wonderful to see him!"
"You'd think you were Mejari, with how you go on," Lysius scoffed in reply, capturing her about the waist with an arm to draw her to him. "Seventy. You haven't aged a day... That I were seventy again!" With mock-despair he let his arm fall, instead running his hair through his graying hair. Truth be told, however, he looked years younger--the Sargtlin had undergone a vast improvement since his wife's return and recovery. Saty had brought happiness and youth back to his life, a welcome change both for him and everyone under his command. He hadn't seemed so alive in years.
"Gus will be staying with us once Kyros is done with him," he offered, diverting the subject from the time lost to Satou. He could easily see why the subject would trouble her; one family hadn't missed a day, and the other had passed hundreds of years. There was time to recover on either side. "Which I doubt will be long, knowing the Vhaid. They've been traveling all day, Kyros will send him away as soon as he starts to droop. We haven't decided what to do with the Daewl, however."
She smiled ear to ear at the prospect of Gus sharing a house with her for a little while, and loved Lysius all the more for allowing it. "well," she was thinking out loud, "Gus did introduce him as a friend, but in all honesty Gus doesn't always make safe friends." She rolled her eyes slightly as she remembered Gus's first real friend, Fen. That was about as good a friendship as a cripple mouse and a lion cub... though Fen had done a good job of protecting Gus so maybe...
"I'd like to say that I don't mind where the Daewl stays, but you saw his mother earlier. I don't know who's the saner, but if he stays here then he gets watched and watched well."
"He is not staying here," Lysius replied firmly. He had lost her once, he wasn't about to risk Saty's safety again. While Satou was recoving from her injury, there had been no talk of her potentially resuming patrols, and the topic had not arisen in the time since. Already he was dreading the day that the subject was breached--and he wasn't entirely certain about how he would respond to it. "I have already spoken with Kyros on the matter, and he seemed to think the Daewl should stay with him...but I am hesitant to leave him that close to our Vhaid, harmless though he may be."
Sighing, he shook his head. "Zelda seemed so concerned over his arrival. It's hard to put that aside, but he hasn't done...anything. We can't condemn him for that." Lysius had learned, in recent years, a fair bit about passing judgment prior to crime. "But her fear has me cautious."
"I talked to her once a long time ago...." She paused and smiled as she realized what she'd just said. "Actually it was a long time ago... before she was with Scion and before she'd had a child... she seemed sane to me then." Saty nodded and silently aproved of the Daewl not staying in her house. And it would be easy enough to explain to Gus by shrouding it in rank traditions.
Over the last month or so, part of her had been watching her husband as he attempted to keep her out of danger, and make sure that there weren't harmful factors too close to the Satou. She didn't have to try very hard to not be offended, after all she did realize that he'd been through a lot... and the matching scars on her back and abdomen from a piercing sword wound prayed on her mind enough to keep her docile for now. Besides, it wasn't just Lysius who worried about her, she was almost sure that Jack worried, and several of her and Lysius's close friends... not to metion the Sargtlins under Lysius's control. She sighed inwardly.
"I'm sure the Vhaid will be find. He can more than protect himself. He's got all those Uths and loyal vhaids backing him up... and with Zelda's proclomaiton no one's going to let him step out of line with more than a little toe." She shrugged. "It's fine." And Gus was staying here. she grinned.
"Sane enough then," he agreed dryly, but chuckled. "I don't know how anyone could maintain sanity living with a cannibal. Let's hope the son hasn't inherited his father's tendencies." Only the widespread knowledge of the workings of Scion's abilities had convinced Lysius to leave him alive. The white Daewl was essentially harmless now, and had supposedly set aside his ways once he and the Valz'hin had been separated. But his son?
"But you're probably right," he continued with a nod. "Kyros is already so heavily guarded, Klu'chud couldn't argue that we were setting a guard specifically on him. He couldn't get away with anything in that house." He paused, satisfied with Satou's reassurances and his own conclusion, then diverted the conversation once more.
"Did Gus happen to mention what held him up when you spoke with him? My Sargtlins have been watching for him for weeks with no sign."
"He said something about being held in the forest by another jivvin... " She nodded, knowing that the whole story would be being given right now, and the information would be better sorted by someone else, than hearing it straight from Gus's tired battered brain. She knew he was in good hands.
"But he was babbling so much, it was hard to understand anything. He said something about demons and something about fires, and something about Scion and Zelda and Mother and Ranald and all the family back at the cabin." She shrugged. "I'm sure it wasn't as bad as Gus thinks it was..."
"That's a lot to fit into a few minutes," he laughed, the sobered. "But most of it not good, it seems. We'll have to get the story out of him...or have Kyros explain while Gus rests. Speaking of whom," he added as a knock sounded from the front door, and abandoned his perch against the counter to answer it.
It was Kyros who led the way inside, with Gus just behind him. The Vhaid offered a nod in greeting for the Sargtlin and a smile past him for his wife. "Good evening Lysius, Satou. I hope you'll pardon me for monopolizing your brother."
Satou grinned and shook her head as an answer, staring at Gus for a moment before speaking "Did they tell you Gus, you'll be staying here with Lysius and I while you're in the village?"
Gus smiled in return, noting the marked changes in his sister for the second time that day. She not only looked older, she looked happier, and it made him smiled to himself. The Satou that left his family had been stoic and grumpy and generally unhappy. "Yeah." He smiled at Lysius, "and thankyou." He motioned to Kryos with a tired smile. "I've met the Sargtlin, the Sargtlin's wife, the Vhaid himself, and several dozen soldiers all in one day." He laughed. "It's been more of a welcome than I ever could have imagined."
Satou grinned and spoke to Kryos. "Are you done with him then? And Scion's son is behing housed with...." she paused. "You?"
Lysius offered a nod in acknowledgment for Gus's thanks as Kyros went on. "Klu'chud will be remaining with me until we decide upon somewhere more suitable." He paused to give weight to the word, then continued, "Though, I do not imagine that he will complain. He, on the other hand, is free to go," he added with a gesture towards Gus, smiling towards the Afya. "Thank you for your time, Gus. I'm sure you must be tired, so I'll leave you to your sister. You, on the other hand." Looking up, he fixed Lysius with a frown and gestured back outside with a nod. "If I might have a word?"
The Sargtlin again nodded, waving Kyros out before glancing back to Satou with a smile. "I doubt we'll be long. Make yourself comfortable, Gus." And he followed the Vhaid out, closing the door behind them.
Satou grinned and grabbed Gus by the arm, pulling him to a chair and pushing him down into it. "Are you alright? Tired? Thirsy?" She pointed to a teapot. "There's tea and weak coffee and pretty much whatever that's natural." She grabbed the teapot as Gus pointed to it with a knowing grin himself. "Gus it's.... it's just so good to see you here."
He grinned and accepted the cup she handed him. "It's good to see you too, though, I have to admit it's strange too." Taking a sip of the warm tea he looked at her face. It was easy, relaxed... it looked like she hadn't frowned in years... "You look the same and yet so different." He set the cup down with a grin as she settled into the chair across from him. "Your hair's longer.
"Yeah. But in all fairness to me, it's been over 70 years Gus, 70 years since you last saw me."
"No, more like a year... if that even ... months really." He nodded.
"Since I saw you then." She shook her head and rolled her eyes at him, showing more of her old self in the action.
The conversation went from there, Satou more interested in the family and Gus and Gus temporarily distracted by seeing his sister so different, that the matter of Bay and the kidnapping didn't come up.
The discussion did in fact take a while, as Kyros divulged a shortened version of all Gus and Klu'chud had told him. Which, really, wasn't much. Gus hadn't known the identity of his captor, and seemed to think that his captor had been two people in one--one of which had briefly been part of Gus beforehand. He had spoken of the sprite's death, and of the stranger's dismantling of his legs, both of which led Kyros to several suspicions, but nothing he could verify just yet. He and the Sargtlin had agreed, however, that this captor could not be allowed to wander the forest, lest they be subjected to a second Scion.
Aleda had been informed. Captains, Sargtlin and Uuthli alike, had been called to arms and sent out with their respective patrols. And there was little more that could be done tonight. A Council would be called, the Uuthli and Sargltin heads were informed, to discuss the arrival of Gus and Klu'chud and the messages they had carried. With this said, Kyros somewhat reluctantly sent them on their way. So much to be done, and so little information to go by. More would be decided with the meeting.
Lysius returned home some two hours later, considerably more subdued than when he left. He brightened somewhat, however, when he opened the door to find Satou and Gus still chatting away in the living room. "I had expected you both to be asleep by now," he admitted as he closed the door and moved to join them.
Satou pushed her hair back from her face and smiled warmly up at Lysisus. "We were just talking of home, old home that is. Join us." with her statement she patted the seat beside her and turned her attention back to Gus with a smile. "it's been such a short time in reality, but so much has happened. Gus was telling me of Jen's new children and new adopted siblings that I've never met. I was about to ask him about Rusty and Booker and Shade.
Gus's face suddenly turned dour and he quickly changed the subject. "Did Kryos tell you everything that Klu'chud and I said? What do I call him by the way? Is it ok that I say Kryos? or do I have to say sir or highness or something?"
He gladly joined her on the couch, sinking back in his seat and stretching an arm out behind her along the couchback. "He gave me the short version. We've spoken with Aleda, the Uuthli, and have patrols out after your captor. I don't think we'll have any immediate results, but..." He shrugged. "You shouldn't worry."
"Kyros is usually fine," he admitted after a pause. "Though it's generally good practice to call the Council members by their titles unless they tell you otherwise. Aleda and Soyala can be stuffy about it... and I require it of my Sargtlins while they are on duty. Jatin might get a kick out of 'highness'." He rolled his eyes. "But names are fine."
Gus nodded slowly. "I've met Jatin before, and I'll bet you're right."
Saty started and furrowed her brow at her brother. "When did you meet Jatin?"
"When Jack and I came to the village... with Fen, the day I got my crystal."
This time Satou nodded. "I remember that. I was so mad. You got a crystal and I didn't." She waved her hand as if she were dismissing it. "It all worked out in the end." if this is the end, her brain suddenly threw in... and she waved her hand again dismissing the invisible thought. It was distressing to think that this might not be the end of all her troubles and that she might end up leaving behind a lonely husband again... or him leaving her behind... she smiled up at Lysius and leaned into his arm more to comfort herself than him.
"It's amazing to think of how far you've come Saty, Keppit will be happy to know that you're not dead, let alone happily married and everything." Gus suddenly stiffled an unexpected yawn and blinked his eyes tiredly at the two Sargtlins. "I'm glad to know that they're out there looking for him though, he could do real damage I think. Anyway, do you mind if I... " He pointed at the guest bedroom and covered another yawn with his hand.
Saty shook her head and smiled at him. "Good night Gus... sleep well."
Gus nodded his goodnights to both of them and shuffled off down the hallway. Satou watched him and then snuggled closer to Lysius. "Thank you for letting him stay. It's really nice to have family close by."
"Sleep well," Lysius echoed as Gus wandered off down the hall, then sunk down in his seat and propped his feet up on the coffee table. His arm slipped down to settled around Satou's shoulders as he offered her a smile. "Mmn. You'd better be grateful," he joked. "You've already got my Sargtlins thinking I've gone soft. Now I'm encouraging travel between the Center and the Village, and allowing potentially murderous Daewls to hang around without question... I can't even complain that Jack's passing around crystals, because he's how you got one."
She smiled. "Actually my crystal was legitimate. Jack brought me to the village and introduced me to people here, I met Kryos and he gifted me a crystal." She could remember that day very clearly. That was the day she started to realize who she was. "But it was still because of Jack that I got the crystal... I wonder how he's doing lately... I haven't seen him in two weeks now, at least." She always talked fondly of Jack, and after everything that had happened to her and him and Lysius, Jack was still a very good friend of hers.
"Besides..." She said, poking him in the stomach. "You have gone soft. All squishy and lovable... like a squishy lovable rock. And you can't complain about encouraging travel between the village and the center either, because that affects me as well." She nodded.
"So complaint is out all around. No complaining."
He frowned briefly with the admission, but then slowly nodded. "I remember. Kyros explained it to me after we ran into each other and I scared you off." He grinned faintly. "But I was right." His smile faltered slightly as she spoke of Jack. He still wasn't altogether fond of the once-Uuthli, though he was thankful to him for his part in returning Satou alive. "I've seen him around here and there. You never know who he's working for anymore, but someone always seems to have some use for him. I think he's been staying with Raechel."
He grimaced with the poke. "Don't tell me that. First I'm gray, now I'm squishy. I'm starting to miss inspiring terror. And that was a complaint."
She could have said that he was perfect, or that he was terrifying, or handsom, or that gray really sutied him, or that she loved him.... but that was the beauty of Lysius and Satou. She didn't have to say any of that in order to make it known that she meant it all. She simply smiled up at him and poked him in the stomach once more for good measure.
After all, their relationship had spawned from mutal hatred, and then blossomed into that wonderful stage where they picked at each other mercilessly, each not only unsure of what they were feeling, but also unsure of how to express it. Somehow it wouldn't be right if she couldn't pick on him fondly. "Well, I think you complain too much." She didn't mean it, of course, Satou herself was a champion complainer.
"I complain about your complaining."
"I complain about enduring your complaining," he countered, words quickly trailing into a yawn. "And I complain about rallying troops after dark, and having to track a madman tomorrow." All of which he really had no complaints about. Lysius lived for his rank, and he lived for his Saty--complaints and all.
"I think it's time for bed," he decided, somewhat reluctantly freeing his arm and climbing to his feet.
She clutched at his belt as he stood, forcing him to also drag her to her feet at the same time. Then she linked arms with him and shuffled down the hall to their room, just about as tired as he was.
But she was also smiling. "My brother came to visit." then she opened the door and motioned Lyrus inside.

((Satou and Kylara :: Aug 01 2005))
Kylara huffed out a sigh and looked around her. The two-floor high library contained within the Jivvin House was . . . not looking its best. When she had first entered the room, the books had all been nicely shelved. So what if they had been stuck halfhazardly onto the shelves, with no care for genre or even language? At least things had looked neat.
Now, however, there were very few books filling the shelves on three walls. Instead, they were stacked here and there all over the room, spilling off of chairs and tables, placed according to catagory.
It was all going to be nice and organized once Kylara was finished.
That would only take the next decade or so of her life . . .
Saty pushed open the library door with a sigh... surely there would be something in here about it... it was the Jivvin library for heaven sake there was bound to be information about jivvins in here. She rounded a corner and stopped when she saw a jivvin fourther there... instantly a pang of embarasment grabbed her as she recognized the ears... Kylara... one of the first jivvins to watch Saty make a fool of herself way back when she didn't have even a little control of her temper... She appeared to be cleaning...
When the library door opened, Kylara looked quickly over her shoulder, wobbling a bit on the tall stool she was using to reach a few of the higher shelves. A familiar-looking Jivvin paced in, and she narrowed her eyes. Sally? Saty? No, wait, that wasn't right . . .
"Satou!" Kylara greeted the new-comer with a smile. "Come on in. Sorry about the mess. I'm trying to . . . um . . . organize things." She looked around, and felt a flush color her pale complexion. The room certainly couldn't have looked less organized.
"How have you been? I haven't seen you around in ages."
Saty sighed.... "I guess I could be better, but I'm fine." She let a moment go by without saying anything... then... "Do... do you want some help?" She looked around the room. It was certainly a mess here, but Kylara was right. It could be cleaned....
Kylara smiled gratefully. I'd love some help. Whoever put the library together hasn't been very good about keeping things organized. The books were all just stuck on the shelves randomly, and I'm trying to put together a good filing system."
She searched through the pockets of her dress and pulled out a list. "I've got copies of this around the room, but it's a list of my catagories and where I'm stacking them for the time being. Like . . . Fiction written in English is over on those two tables. Or Scientific texts are over there." She gestured to a leather sofa piled high with books. "Once I've got all of the books taken down from the shelves, I'll put them in order, probably alphabetically by subject or author, depending on the genre, and put them all back on the shelves."
She stepped carefully down from the stool and began to sort the armful of books she had pulled from the shelf. "So, what's going on? 'Could be better' isn't a very cheerful answer. anything I could help with?" Saty leaned down and nosed open a book to read the frist page... fiction it looked like... she picked it up with her mouth and walked over to the table to set it down...
"Nope... it's not important anyway. I'm just trying to figure out some things." she picked up another book and found it's temporary home... "I didn't know you had gone fourth... You're very pretty."
Kylara blushed again and waved a hand to hide her embarressment. "Oh, wow. Thanks. Jack helped me find my crystal a few weeks ago. It was really scary. The wide Uulthi was looking for the crystal as well, and she flew down and attacked Jack. It really scared me."
She realized that she was babbling a bit, and took a breath as she stood to carry some books across the room. "But that's a long story." She returned to the stool and reached up for a few more books. "I feel like I've really lost touch with a lot of the Jivvin community over the last several months. I don't know what people have been doing, or anything. Like . . . you live with Gus, right?"
Saty rolled her eyes ... "With Gus and Alexaner Edward, and Rusty and booker and Shade`.... it's like a zoo... but I don't stay in the house, I live in a tree house in the back yard." She stopped because she realized how silly all this must sound...
"So, you had to find a crystal to be fourth... " she knew that part, but she never really talked to Gus so she didn't really know anything else... and that was the reason she was here after all.. to find a book on jivvins so she could look up the whole fouther thing.... "What's it like?"
"A tree house? That must be fascinating." Kylara grinned in sympathy over the exasperation in Satou's voice when she described her large family. After all, Foenix's family wasn't precisely . . . small.
"What's it like being a Fourther?" Kylara was silent for a few moments as she puzzled over the unidentifiable language of a book and tried to gather her thoughts.
"It's . . . completely different. As soon as I picked up the crystal, my flesh started crawling. Literally. It was a horrible feeling. My bones, my skin, everything was remaking itself. Just . . . completely foreign. Fortunately, the change was only uncomfortable that first time. As for being humanoid, well, it really took getting used to. Walking upright on only two legs took a lot of practice. And talking through these flat lips?" She grinned at her memories.
"But once you get used to the differences, it's really nice. I love having real hands, opposable thumbs." (Even if she did still tend to hide her scarred hands beneath long sleeves.)
Satou breathed in deeply... It would be nice to have thumbs. Much easier to practice weaponry that way. "Yeah I bet it would be nice to be taller and less... animal." She nosed open another book and looked at it quickly before introducing it to a table... "Are there any books in here about Jivvins? Or maybe by jivvins?"
Kylara smiled and nodded. "Actually, I'm devoting an entire section of the library to Jivvin information and history." She gestured for Satou to follow her, and walked over to the far corner of the room. There, on a heavy oak table, were several stacks of books.
"A lot of these are written in a language I can't read. I'm working on it, and I want to get some help from one of the Daewls. But there are some written in English, and a few others in Latin, so I can certainly help there." She sat down and made herself comfortable. "What are you looking for? If I know, I can probably help you find the books more quickly."
Saty was shocked by the amount of books on the table... there was more than she had hoped for... wait what was the question? "Fourthers..." She had just blurted it out. but it was true... "Fourthers, and crystals... maybe even ranks and information on how the jivvins used to be... " this was great! She'd probably be able to learn more than she had thought possible and it was all thanks to Kylara... She beamed at the anthro.
Kylara had to return Satou's eager grin. Somehow, the choice of topic wasn't that surprising. It was one she herself was pretty interested in.
Settling in the chair, she reached out and opened a book at random. "This may take a bit of time," she cautioned. "I've yet to read through all of these. Mostly, I just make sure the book's Jivvin-related, and I add it to the stack. But we'll start looking for Fourther and rank info."
She started to skim through the chapter index.
"Are you eager to achieve Fourther rank? I know that's a pretty stupid question, but . . ."
Satou had started to dig through the books in order to help out looking for info... "I think it would be a nice change. I've been training, exerciseing and whatnot, but I think I've progressed as far as I can really... I want to move on to bigger things, and thumbs would help me a lot." She nosed open a book, the very act emphasizing in her mind her own wish for thumbs. "Besides, my brother... er... Gus," What was with her lately? calling Gus her brother and Keppit her mother... she needed to stop that. "Gus has thumbs, and Jen and Dromi are both thumbed." She winced at the made up verb... "I feel... left out."
Kylara nodded. "Oh, trust me, I know exactly how you feel. The majority of Foenix's crew is humanoid, and it was so frustrating when they could do things I couldn't. And it really grated when I always had to ask for help."
She flipped forward in her current book. "I started to feel as though I no longer fit into my own skin, as though I needed to sink my teeth and rip myself open to escape. I know that sounds a little gruesome, but . . ." She trailed off and shrugged.
Skimming the pages, she frowned. "This is interesting. According to this text, it seems there's something of a debate over the origin of the crystals. When this was written, scholars couldn't decide if the crystals occur naturally in nature . . . or if they're linked to individual Jivvins."
Saty had been staring at Kylara's description of her pain at being left behind in the world of fourlegged jivvins. Was it that bad? Was that how Saty felt? Why didn't she know how she felt?
Then the information about the crystals brought her back to the real world and she jumped a chair closer to Kylara... "So... what does that mean? ... that anyone could find a crystal, that if someone had found Gus's crystal first then it wouldn't be Gus's crystal?" She remembered when Gus had first got the crystal he had left it on his desk in his loft. She had snuck up and wanted to touch it, but she was afraid of transforming and looking like Gus... eventually she had touched it and nothing had happened... " But It's Gus's crystal now... it won't work for anyone else. " then something else occured to her... "But his crystal is Blue like him... what does that mean? It is just coincidence? "
Kylara frowned and reached for a different book. "I'm going to keep researching in that direction. My guess is that there are two main possibilities. First is that when a certain Jivvin reaches the point when he or she is ready to transform, a crystal linked directly appears somewhere."
She shifted and flipped through pages. "The second possibility, and this is the one I'm inclined to believe based upon my personal experience, is that the crystals occur naturally. Another Fourther can sense it, and it's his or her job to lead an adult Jivvin off to search for it. Those adults who are ready to move on can sense it too, but not as strongly. Once an adult has found and touched the crystal, they become linked. The crystal won't work for anyone else."
She thought about the angry words of the wild Uulthi back in the forest. and Jack had mentioned that the wild Jivvins would be searching for the crystal as well. Why would they bother if it was linked to her alone? "That's probably right..." Saty remembered something she had read in Gus's journal about wild fourthers. They had caught Gus and Jack and were trying to ... Saty couldn't rememeber, which was silly since it was the most exciting thing is Gus's journal. The rest was just romantic sappery...
"So a Jivvin might be able to feel when it was their time to go fourth?" but that might mean that it wasn't her time... since she didn't feel anything really. Sure she wanted to be fourther, but it wasn't calling her... and that wasn't fair! She and Gus were exactly the same age... shouldn't she be ready by now? Perhaps she wasn't as mentally sound as Gus... heaven knows she was a little off her rocker...
"Does that mean that we're kind of magical? Us jivvins I mean..."
"I would expect so, Satou. After all, magic and similar sorts of power and energy aren't exactly rare around Gaia. I'd say that over half of the inhabitants of our world are associated in some way with magic. And let's face it; there's got to be some sort of magic involved to transfer a creature from animal to humanoid and back! Otherwise, our physical bodies couldn't handle that sort of strain.
She reached over for another book. "What I'd really love is some information on how exactly the crystals are formed. I'd bet almost anything that it's somewhere in one of those texts." She waved toward the stack of books written in that strange language she had mentioned. "But I can't read them! The words, the very style of text itself, is totally foreign. It's so frustrating."
Saty sighed... "I can barely read english... I mean, I can read all right, I'm just not all the well practiced..." She nosed open a book and browsed the content list... just some information on ear hygiene. Just what she needed. She rolled her eyes and pushed the book aside, before opening another one. "I'm more of a physical type than a reading type... But I've never considered myself magical... "
Kylara bit her tongue and carefully placed her current book in the very back. Oh, gads . . . Jivvin . . . porn . . . eeww. Some of those images were never going to leave her mind . . .
"Well, um, think of it more as being a magical creature, rather then a magic wielder. The magic is inside us, it's part of us, but we can't directly use it. With the exception of the mages, of course."
"And I'm able to read well, simply because I like to read. It was something that caught my interest. I like to read, and learn, so I taught myself to read all of the Romance languages, plus Latin and Greek. I'm working on Russian and Japanese. But I'm a total scardy-cat, and could never hold my own in a fight, or use any sort of real weapon. That's just not what I'm good at. I'll bet you're really good at that sort of thing."
She grinned to herself... "Yeah.. none of my brothers will fight me anymore. They know that I'll win." She glanced at the book Kylara had just put down, but didn't pick it up. The look on the anthro's face hadn't been nice...
She nosed open another book... "This one has info on the crystals, but it seems to be the same as the one that you read before... " She sighed.... there had to be something here....
Kylara slumped back in the chair and sighed. "There are still a few books in English left, Satou. I'm going to start on the other languages I can read." She picked a book up and made a face. "Yuck. Medieval French." She shrugged and stood up to fetch a notebook and pencil to help in her translations.
Saty went back to her original chair and slumped down with mild dejection. So many books, but she was determined... So so nosed open yet another book and browsed the contents page... nothing. Three books later with the same result she glanced over at Kylara and her french... "How many languages did you say you spoke?"
Kylara held up a hand and counted. "Um . . . French, Italian, Spanish, I've got a smattering of Portugese, German, the medieval versions of all of those, Latin, Greek, and I'm currently working on Russian and Japanese. But I'm not really sure I'll ever really catch on to any of the Asian languages. They're just so totally different."
She realized that she sounded like she was bragging. "But I'm a total dork. And while I can read and write them, I'm not really sure I could hold a conversation. That requires a completely different sort of practice. And I learned them all from books and tapes, so I probaly don't know a lot of the slang."
"Ah..." Saty suddenly felt inadequate... "I only speak English and German." She nosed open another book. "You said there was an old jivvin language? or something like that?" It was just beginning to dawn on Saty that she really didn't know all that much about jivvins or thier history, which was absurd. She was a jivvin.
Kylara smiled. "German's fun. I liked learning it, even if pronuncian is a pain. As to the Jivvin language, I'm only guessing. I've found the word Jivvin, or similar derivations, in all of those books. I'm pretty sure they're all the same language. And since I haven't found that language in any other texts, it makes sense for it to be associated directly with the Jivvins."
She stopped to take a breath and pushed her glasses farther up on her nose. "Sorry. I tend to go off in 'lecture mode' if people don't stop me."
Saty looked up... "No I like it... I like to learn even if I don't really like to read. Is there anything on the wild jivvins? ... that might have something to do with the crystals.... " She stared at the pile of books that she'd already browsed though as if that would make them tell her if she'd missed information about the wild jivvins...
Kylara frowned. She couldn't help it. "From what I've seen, and heard, the wild Jivvins . . . don't much like us. Or, at least, they really don't want anything to do with us. I'm not so sure we'll be able to find much information on them."
She shivered a bit. "When Jack and I were out searching for my crystal, he told me that the wilds would try to beat us to it. And it was a very close thing. I'd only just found it, and transformed for the very first time, when an Uuthli attacked us. Or, she attacked Jack, rather. I know there's bad history between Jack and the Wilds because of his fiance. But I don't know what they wanted the crystal for."
Saty stopped... "They don't like us? why not?" She'd read something in gus's journal about a wild jivvin helping him and Jack... "They don't like US, or the don't like the Humans, or they don't like the things we do or the way we behave? ... or maybe all of it?" Her inner Saty gave a snarl, who were these wild jivvins to make assumptions about her when they didn't even know her... they didn't! ....
"But they need the crystals just like we do, or they wouldn't have tried to attack you... they obviously want the same things that we want...." this was so confusing...
Kylara sighed and lifted her hands in frustration. "I really don't know. I'd like to think that only some of the Wilds don't like us. Jack was very . . . vague about them during our conversation. But I find it hard to believe that they'd want to remain completely seperate from us."
She sat up and began picking up books, trying to prompt her memory. "Maybe we've been starting with the wrong end. Perhaps we should be searching for information on the Wild Jivvins."
"Maybe" Saty felt so lost... Wild Jivvins, crystals... She pulled a book down off the pile she'd already looked through and opened it again... "There's just so much I don't know, and it seems insane to not know." She knew without looking at Kylara that the anthro was hungry for knowledge... and that if there was anyone here that could help her find things out, it was Kylara...
The first book didn't relinquish any information, but the second coughed up some information on the old jivvins and the fact that they used to be royal pets, but Saty already knew that... she mentioned it to Kylara... "This book talks about old jivvins... "
"Really? Let's see." Kylara gathered her skirts around her and perched on the arm of Satou's chair. "Well, we know that they used to be pets. So what happened? Why did some break away? And I wonder when they first were able to achieve Fourther form. Hmm. If I remember correctly, I found that book with two others. They should be . . . here."
She searched through the piles on the table and came up with two. One was written in the odd language. The other was in old Latin. "Good job, Satou. Keep looking through that one, and I'll work on this one."

(( Satou and Kylara Continued from above ))
Satou smiled to herself, even though the information wasn't quite helpful, it was something and she was proud of it... She pushed the book out a little further and turned a page with her nose, giving herself a papercut at the same time... SHe gave a small yelp and licked her nose... "Damn." She crossed her eyes trying to look at it, but realized she probably looked stupid and stopped.
She looked down at the page... nothing really and so she turned the page with her tail.
Kylara looked up at Satou's yelp. "Oh, dear. Here." she reached into one of her pockets and grabbed a small navy blue handkerchief. "You'll look a little funny with this on, but at least it'll stop the bleeding."
Looking down, she continued to translate. As she became used to the terrible grammar of this particular scholar, the reading became easier, and much quicker. It didn't take very long to reach the end of the text.
Satou sat there with a frown on her jivvin face... this sucked (excuse her vocabulary ^_^ ) here she was sitting on her hind end in the library with a blue handkerchief tied around her nose because she'd been attacked by a stationary book of all things... she sighed... and on top of that she wasn't very good at finding information. By the time that she'd reached the end of a sentance she had already forgotten the begining... she glanced over at Kylara... heaven knows how she was doing this in old french...
"Kiblara, Whad exagbtly ab I looging for again?" She sniffed and pulled the handkerchief off her nose... "I mean... am I looking for things on crystals or on wild jivvins, or royalty? ... " She paused... "Which would be more helpful do you think?"
"Well, I'm not sure." Kylara chuckled helplessly. "I think we'd be better off searching for info on the Wild Jivvins. That would include things on when the Wilds first left the humans and established their own conclave. I'm pretty much keeping an eye out for mention of any and all of those things."
She finished up the french manuscript -ugh, the grammar had been horrible!- and started on the text she had found alongside Satou's current book. She had a really, really good feeling about this one.
Saty turned the page... page after page after page... she was trying but she didn't really think that she was taking in any important information... wait, this page had a picture on it.... "Ewwww..." Who knew a Jivivn could do that? .... She turned the page... then with exasperation she pushed the book aside, letting it fall off the table open onto the chair below it, and then she started on another book....
Kylara glanced over at Satou's sigh. "Tell me if you need a break, okay? This sort of thing can be really boring and monotonous when you're first starting out. And we've been at it for . . ." She looked at her watch, and blinked. "Wow. We've been working for a few hours already."
She stared back down at the last few pages of her text, then flipped back to the front. Frowning, she stood and began searching through the books stacked on the table. "It wasn't with it . . ." she muttered to herself. "I know there wasn't another like this. If it's part of a series, why wouldn't they be together?"
Turning toward Satou, she nudged the younger Jivvin to get her attention. "Satou, could you help me look for something? I think the book I just translated is part of a series. But I'm not seeing any other books here. It's called Historia Jivvinorum. That means 'A History of the Jivvins.' There's a reference to a group a Jivvins that left their royal 'masters' and took off with their children, right around the time of a series of peasant uprisings in France. I think this could be the group that started the village out in the forest."
She left the table and began searching the shelves not yet sorted. "The text is part of a series. But I haven't found the next book."
Saty just stared at Kylars with a crooked expression... she was about to say ... What? ... when the words Find book History of Jivvins , struggled through the other stuff and hit her brain... she hopped down and walked around the table looking for the other parts of the serries.... they probably looked like the one that Kylara just had.... There!, no wait that WAS the book that Kylara jsut had... Saty sighed... They searched the whole table and in the end Saty had one book that was similar, but she could tell it wasn't what they were looking for...
"Could it be somewhere other than this table?" Why would te jivin center have one book in a serries and not the others?
Kylara blanched at searching the rest of the library. "I still haven't done anything with the books over on that wall. If you could start searching the shelves that you can reach easily, I'll . . ." A thought struck her, and she jumped. "Jack! He worked a bit in the library while he still lived here. He was the one who told me about it in the first place. If anyone knows where that book will be, he will. I'll go give him a quick call."
Carefully, almost reverently, she placed the first book of the series on an empty shelf, so that it wouldn't get lost. "I'll fetch us some drinks, and a bit of food while I'm at it."
Saty looked over at the shelves and surpressed a wimper... but the thought of a drink kept her going... She took on the first shelf and then the second shelf... nothing really though there was a book there that she might like to read later... ....
Kylara stopped in at the kitchen first. She poured herself a tall glass of juice and found some fresh veggies in the fridge. That, plus a little mustard, dill, and sour cream for a dip, would be just fine for her. Staring into the cubboard, she swore at herself for not stopping to ask Satou what she liked to drink. Well . . . there was water, and she'd just bring the juice along in case. And there was a bag of chips . . . and she'd slice up some extra vegetables.
Leaving the tray in the kitchen, she ran to the phone and quickly looked up Jack's number. She dialled, and waited eagerly for someone to pick up on the other end.

(( Jack, Kylara and Satou :: Aug 01 2005 ))
Jack was bored. By the gods, was he bored...and lonely. X's house was rarely as quiet as today... But X had taken the twins and Nao off to who knew where, Ana was sleeping, and the few other members of the household who were home were hiding away in their respective bedrooms. The silence was almost eerie.
The 'pirate' Jivvin jumped visably when the ringing of the phone shattered the silence. He debated just letting it ring (the calls were never for him), but soon decided against it and retreated back to the kitchen, picking up the phone. "X's place, Jack speaking. Hello?"
"Jack! I'm so glad you're there." Kylara had to stop and take a few calming breaths. Her heart was racing from the excitement, and she had to catch her breath. "It's Kylara. I'm over at the House, and I had a question. Do you remember coming across a series in medieval French called Historia Jivvinorum? Satou and I were doing a little research, and I think the answer might be in the second book of that series. But we can't find it!"
"Oh, hey Kylara," Jack replied, sounding rather surprised. Haha, he did get phone calls. Inwardly gloating, he leaned back against the wall and remained silent while Kylara explained her 'problem', tapping the countertop thoughtfully. "It sounds familiar... Actually, I know I've read that before, maybe it's-" he paused, blinking, then frowned faintly and cleared his throat. "Er, the library doesn't have the rest of the Historia series. Very rare books. A, er...private collector has them. Sorry."
Jack's answer, delivered in a rather cool tone of voice, stopped Kylara in her tracks. But . . . no! The answers they wanted were there, she just knew it!
As she frowned down at the phone, she tapped one foot on the floor and hummed, thoughtfully. Actually, that tone of voice was rather familiar. It was the same one Jack had used when talking about his experiences with the Wilds.
"Well . . . " she twisted the phone cord around her finger. "Do you know of any other books along those lines? Or do you think this person might be willing to let me visit and read through the book? It would only take an hour or so. I wouldn't take up much of his time, I promise!"
"I...don't know," he answered, somewhat honestly. He did know of other books, and had read most of them in fact, but anything along the lines of the Historias wouldn't be in that library. Actually, he was surprised the first of those was even there. Someone must have forgotten it. "What exactly are you looking for? The library has a few Jivvin related books... Not much on the subjects of the Historias and the like, though. This...collector is pretty possessive. It cost me a lot just to get near his collection." A lot in the form of wings.
Kylara blew out a heavy breath. "Okay. I was trying to organize the library. There are just so many books, and people obviously haven't been very careful about replacing them in the correct place after reading them. So I was trying to fix that when Satou came in. She wanted some information about the crystals, and Jivvin ranks. And I came across a few different theories on the creation and purpose of the crystals, which led to us trying to figure out how the Wild Jivvins use the crystals. Why they want them and all that, if the crystals are created and intended for the use of a specific Jivvin."
She needed to stop for another breath after all of that. "Sorry, I know I'm rambling a little, but it's been a rather long afternoon. In any case, I found that first book from the Historia. I came to the last few pages, and the writer was talking about a peasant revolt in France. I think that might have led to the ancestors of the current Wilds leaving to set up their own place. But then the text ends! Jack, I have GOT to see the next book."
"Ahh..." Well, that explained it...somewhat. Jack began to speak, hesitated, then sighed and fell silent. This could get...very complicated. "Tell you what..." Another pause, hesitation, sigh. "This could take a while, so I'm gonna come over there, alright? I don't trust phones anyway. I'll be over in a few minutes. Just..stay there." Without waiting for a reply, he hung up and headed up stairs. Someone had to listen for Ana while he was gone. Maybe Isto was home...
Kylara stared down at the phone. "Okay . . ."
Shrugging, she returned to the kitchen at retrieve the tray of snacks, adding a glass for Jack. She made her way slowly to the library. "Satou?" she called out as she nudged the door open with her shoulder. "I've got food, and Jack's heading over here. I'm sorry for leaving you alone so long, but it took a little . . . pursuading."
Saty turned as she heard her name being called through the library... Kylara was back, and Saty felt a small pang of guilt at not finding anything... She hopped down off a desk that she had been standing on. "Find anything?" ....
Kylara nudged the doors closed behind her. "Jack's . . . I don't know. He says the books are in the library of some collector. And by the way he was talking, I don't think he wants us anywhere near this person."
She sighed, and placed her tray on a nearby table. "And just when I thought we'd found the answers we needed. But I'm sure Jack will help us. Anyway, I brought juice and water, and chips, veggies and dip." She helped herself to a slice of celery.
Saty just stared at Kylara.... so the books weren't here.... "But... " But... " But... if we have the first book, why don't we have the others? Do they belong to the jivvin center? or this collector?"
Kylara's shoulders slumped as she nibbled on a carrot. "I don't know, Satou. Jack sounded almost, well, nervous. As though he didn't want us looking for, or even knowing about the books. He seemed pretty surprised that we even had the one book."
She walked over to Satou and placed a hand on the Jivvin's shoulder as she studied the books still arranged halfhazardly on the shelves. "We're really close, Satou. I just know it. A lot of the answers we want are right there. If we could just get our hands on those books . . ."
Saty sighed .... Kylara made it sound as if Jack meant the book didn't belong to the center. In that case they had no right to ask to read it. Comforted slightly by Kylara's presence she walked over and grabbed a carrot stick from the tray... careful not to touch any of the other sticks with her teeth (she figured that her teeth were cleaner than the paws she'd been walking around on all day) she munched on it while thinking...
All they had to do now was wait for teh Jackman ^_^...
"Well, in the meanwhile, we've still got several other books here that we haven't looked at." Kylara tried her best to sound cheerful. "Just because we don't have the easy answer doens't mean we have to stop trying. Feel free to just sit and relax. I know how draining a full afternoon of nothing but books can be."
But Kylara took her glass of juice and sat down with a new book. Unlike a lot of people, she actually considered this sort of reading to be relaxing. And what better way to waste time until Jack arrived?
Jack wasn't long in arriving, and seemed more as if he had suddenly appeared in the library than anything. (But, of course, Jack can't do that >.> wink The 'walk' over had only served to make him a bit more upset with the whole situation, and thus when he approached the pair, he looked quite a bit more flustered than he had sounded on the phone. The 'pirate' shot a rather annoyed glance towards the stack of book already present, but only dug through and picked up, of all of them, the Historia that had brought him here, opening it and flipping through the pages. "So, what did you want to know, again?"
Saty was not to be detered... there wouldn't be anyone looking for her... (not because she was unloved, but rather becuase she was an adult and well trusted) and so she had all the time in the world... she pulled a random book off the shelf and opened it... there were at least some pictures in this one and they were decent... ok so inner ear hygiene wasn't the most interesting, but it was better than that last book with pictures in it... really.
"Nice to see you, too." Kylara snapped. Then she sighed. "Sorry. I didn't mean to upset you, Jack. And we both appreciate your coming over on such short notice. But can you blame us for wanting to know more about our past? About our race?"
She stood and crossed the room to refill her glass. She was thirsty, and she needed something in her hands so that she didn't start to fiddle from nervousness. Why did this feel like a confrontation? "I want to know more about the original group of Jivvins who left their human guardians and went off to live on their own. I want to know more about the village of Wild Jivvins that exists out in that forest. And I want to know what they do with the crystals they find. Jack, that Jivvin who attacked you while I was on my little quest was ready to really hurt you. Why was that crystal so important?"
Saty just sat down and nodded. Kylara had it more than handled.
"Mmn," Jack grunted in reply, flipping to a new page. His eyes scanned the page, apparently taking it in despite his earlier statement to Kylara that he didn't know any foreign languages. Taking the book with him, he walked the short distance to a comfortable looking armchair and sunk onto it, finishing off the page and moving on to the next before snapping it shut. "I'd forgotten about this, hmm..."
He was silent for a moment, then set the book on his lap and looked back up. "You want the truth?" He sighed, then chuckled softly. "The truth is, there was no original group, and they didn't chose to leave their bonds. The medieval Jivvins fought alongside their caretakers during the peasant revolts, but too many were dying when their bonds were killed, so they ones that remained were freed before the battles. They fought for the protection of their friends and caretakers, and when sheer numbers lost the battles anyway...they retreated into the forests."
He paused and set the book aside, climbing to his feet, pacing... "There were massacres.. Lots of them. Jivvins were the symbol of many of the royal families, and were hated just as much because of it. When small groups were found, they were overwhelmed and slaughtered. Survivers met up and started a small 'pack' in the forest surrounding this house... Daewls disguised the area by harnessing the forests powers, and various sentries were stationed should anyone come near anyway... Most parties that did were lost in the trees and eventually died of hunger."
Shrugging, he glanced back towards Kylara. "Those Jivvins are still there. Most of them, anyway. Immortal unless they are killed now that their bonds are gone. The crystals... there I can't tell you much." He frowned faintly, then again shrugged, returning to his seat. "I don't know how they work. I can't remember. I've read the texts... but a lot has happened since then. As to why they're hording them, well... they don't abandon all of the eggs. There're younger Jivvins there as well. And all of the Jivvins in that settlement are fourth stagers. They're given the crystals at birth, makes things easier. I was given one when I met them, in fact." He hesitated, apparently regretting those words, and quickly continued. "They've never wanted any of the bonded Jivvins to reach fourther. During their time, it was illegal. They think it should be now as well, and they don't want us to have the crystals. Basically. I think," he added with a shrug.
Kylara reached out with a quiet gasp, her eyes huge and focused unwaveringly upon Jack's face. "Then why . . . the Historia claims that the Jivvins left. At least . . . That's where our first volume ended. Is the rest of this . . . everything you just told us . . . is that all in the rest of the books?"
Sensing the pirate's exhaustion, she filled a glass with water and brought it to him. "Jack, I don't want to bring you any trouble, or cause you any distress. But I still want to see those books." She looked over to Satou, wanting to make sure the younger Jivvin was still with her.
"Jack, if you truly believe we're better off not knowing, then I'll let it go. If you ask me to, I'll go home. I won't tell anyone what you told us, although I can't imagine why this should be a secret. And I'll never mention the Historia again. But this is something I think I need."
At this point Saty stepped forward. "I won't." The look on her face said she was serrious. "I won't let go. I need to know where jivvins came from and why we are the way we are today. I need to know how and why the crystals work the way that they do and if there's going to eventually be one out there for me. I'll do anything to know." She sat down. "Anything." She would be right beside Kylara in this whole endeavor... unless she wanted to quit... they Saty would go on.
"There are...lots of books that aren't here," he admitted, rubbing his temple. Damn, now he had a headache. He nodded his thanks when Kylara handed him the glass and took a long drink before looking back up. "They took most of them... The Vhaid now keeps them in a private library in the village. This Historia refers to a single incident of Jivvins leaving.. In the second it continues with the mention that those Jivvins were later captured and slaughtered." A dry smile. Jack took another sip of his drink, lingering with it so he wouldn't have to reply... but finally set the glass back down. "I couldn't bring the books here. There're too many, and Ky-... the Vhaid would never let me. But..." Here he hesitated once more, and finally just shook his head, picking up his glass..
Kylara bit her lip with growing excitement over Jack's words. The books were within reach! Sort of . . .
"Well, I've only met the one, and she wasn't particularly welcoming. Would any of the other Wilds allow us into the village? This Vhaid, perhaps?" She placed a gentle hand on Jack's arm and looked over at Satou again. If noone would allow them openly into the village . . .
Maybe they could find a way to sneak in.
The thought was exciting, but terrifiying as well. Kylara didn't want to broach the possibilty, as she knew this sort of action wasn't her strength.
"I read Gus's journal." Her smile said that this was information she knew Jack didn't expect her to have. "I read that there was a wild jivvin that helped you and him and Fen when you were out looking for crystals... I think it said that he'd helped you before. What about him?" Saty was grasping for information straws...
"And why won't they let anyone near them anyway? What did we, personally, ever do to them to make them hate us?"
"Into the villiage?" Jack blinked, looking stunned. Ahh, crap, what had he started? Mentally cursing himself to the deepest depths of who knows where, he shooked his head, a reply dying on his lips with Satou's words.
Dammit, Jatin.
Shaking his head, Jack climbed to his feet once more and paced away from them both. "No, no, no, we can't go to there. I've caused enough trouble, and Jatin's done too much to help already, and it's hard enough to get close to Kyros when you're alone, let alone bringing two other people to raid his library. Everything with them is secrecy. They don't hate us, they just...the massacres..." Jack sighed, shaking his head. "They think just as they did back then... Time hasn't changed their opinions, and they're scared of another massacre if anyone finds them. They're the only ones left, and the Daewl-" he paused, shook his head. "It wouldn't work."
Kylara snapped a piece of bell pepper in two. What to say? She didn't want to bring Jack any more trouble. Gods knew that he had suffered enough.
"So, why does anyone have to know? If we could get our hands on the book, it shouldn't take me more then a few hours to find out what we need. Or . . ." Her mind raced. She needed a plan that Jack would agree to. Something quick and easy. We go in with a digital camera, it takes us 30 minutes to record the pages, and then we're gone."
She caught herself, and clenched nervous fingers into her palms. Curved nails pressed into sweaty palms. What had she just suggested? There was no way she'd have the nerve to try something so risky!
Saty stood at attention... "I'll go. I'm willing to go and do whatever, though I'm not good with a camera becuase I can't hold it still long enough to get a picture. Besides, this is something that we should know." She gave a savage grin. "I'm not going to start a jivvin massacre... unless I have to." She barked a short laugh before bringing herself back into the here and now. We're the same as them, they're the same as us... we want the same things! It seems only right that we have access to the same information that they do!" She was already angry at these village jivvins and she'd never met them, nor heard the whole story.
No, no, no, no, NO, they couldn't do this! It was absolutely madness to try to get anywhere near the settlement without being detected, let alone into the Vhaid's personal library. In the Vhaid's private home. Guarded at all hours.
But somehow Jack knew these two wouldn't relent... And if he left, they would try to go anyway, he was sure. And with the forest as it was... Well, the shifting spaces weren't the only dangers. He sighed, glancing from Kylara to Satou and back, and shook his head...shoulders slumping in resignation. "Fine. We'll...we'll go. But there are some things you need to know first, and some ground rules you need to agree to." At this, he straightened up, faint frown returning, but he seemed more determined now that he had agreed to it. "No rules, no trip."
Kylara began to chew her lip, but she nodded. Whatever Jack wanted, she'd agree to. Especially if it was going to contribute to her -their- safety. She fisted her hands tighter, and knew she'd regret it later as she felt one nail cut the skin of her palm. But clenching them tight meant that they weren't shaking with nervousness.
"Go on, Jack." She was proud that her voice didn't tremble, or that it at least didn't tremble much. "What are the rules?"
Saty nodded... "Rules are acceptable, and you do have the most experience in this sort of thing... You should at least be allowed to set down what you think are fair limits..." Saty would agree to jack's rules... he DID know best... and she would do her best to adhere to them... she was itching to do this.. to go on this adventure... to tustle and feel useful again...
"Give us your rules... " She grinned at him.
Jack relaxed slightly when they agreed, and actually managed a faint smile, shrugging calmly. "It's pretty straightforward. Any order from me, you follow it. The Wilds'll be unhappy enough if they find us there, and there're plenty of other things in that forest to watch out for. I say be quiet, be quiet. I say run, run. If there's ever a fight, take that as your cue to get out of there as quickly as possible."
He paused, glancing back towards the copy of the Historia, then continued. "When we ge there... They will recognize me. Expect different reactions from different ranks. I'm pretty close to some of the higher ups, though, so depending on who we run into..we should be alright. If we meet up with the Vhaid, bow if you value your life. If we meet up with the Sargtlin...Well, just pray that doesn't happen."
He sighed once more, then closed the distance and picked up the Historia. "Agreed? Whenever you're ready, we can leave."

(( Satou and Sanyu :: Nov 16 05 ))
Saty was sitting out by the lake. She couldn't remember why she had come to the Jivvin center, but she knew that the place was as good as any for a good thought process. She had pawned Shade` (small Jivivn sprite) off on Gus for the day so that she could sit by her lonesome without having to give orders or hear one more 'yes Sir!' in high pitched pink voice. ....
She sighed. There had to be something a little less boring than sitting here. All that happened when she sat still and thought was that she got depressed... so it was time to move a little.
People at the Jivvin center on this particular day, had they looked out the window at about noon, would have seen a large jivvin female jumping around like a mad beast tail whipping around, ears flying back behind her, front feet pounding anything that moved..... which in Saty's case was only flowers. .... but flowers made a good imainary enemy on a boring day.
Sanyu had managed to climb up into one of the trees earlier in the day and fall asleep. How on Earth she had gotten away from Brice, was a total shock to her. Not like she minded. The little squirt could drown for all she cared...
Her peace however was disturbed by loud pouncing noises a little ways down the shore. Opening one eye with a frown she tried to find the perpetrator. Someone better be on fire...
"Hey! What's with all the noise?" Remaining in her tree the blue Jivvin hung her tail down and rocked it from side to side lazily as she yelled over to the apparently older Jivvin.
The brown jivvin landed on all fours and directed her attention up the beach in the direction of the voice... She growled slightly in the back of her throat and then stalked over towards the tree.... she couldn't be sure where the voice had come from but there were only a few choices.... That bush, that rock formation there, or one of those trees...
"What's it to you?" She fairly barked the challenge off into the surrounding area.
Figuring that she might be able to have some fun with the brown one who looked about her size... From this angle... by staying in the tree she tried to sound higher up then she acutally was. More omnicient.
"Some peace and quiet. Some of us are trying to sleep around here..." Hmm... Fiesty one she is. This is going to be fun. THERE! The voice had come from up in the tree... female of some sort, or else a young male.... easy.
She sneered. "What... Sleeping in a tree? To scared to sleep on the ground where decent beings sleep? Afaid that someone would come along and get you while you're at your most vulnerable?" Saty was on the larger side of the jivvin sizing scale, and she knew it.
Damn... Caught... Sanyu scrunched up her nose and listened. Although she was being insulted, Sanyu liked the style and scornfulness behind them.
"Ha. Far from the truth. On the ground is for people who lack the intelligence to get up to a more peaceful place. So why would I choose to sleep on the dirt that you're so fond of when I can easily rise above the noisy degenerates?" She added a smirk and flick of her tail.
Saty gave a short leap accompanied by a barking laugh... "Better in the dirt with the wolverines than in the trees with the flightly birds and jittery squirels." She pulled her tail around in front of her and gave it a quick groom. "You probably just don't like dirt. Don't like anything about it, don't like the taste or the smell or the colour and it's probable from having your face ground in it so much." She watied... this was actually fun. Much better than sitting at the lake shore, sighing out your peace and breathing back in all your worries.
Sanyu stared at her for a couple seconds. Were they actually getting snooty over dirt? How dare this stranger imply such things about her!
"Excuse me! I have never had my face ground into dirt. I don't hate dirt, it serves it's purpose and that's it. When it get's out of place and onto me, then yes. I do hate it. As for you, I can't tell if you love dirt so much you refuse to wash it off or if you just naturally smell bad and it's your true colors..." Oh what was that? Yes. One for the heated Sanyu.
Saty laughed and sat down where she was. "Brown's not such a bad colour. It's better than green or orange or blue..." She still couldn't see the other jivvin. "At least I can sit here in the dirt and sit comfortably without worrying that someone's going to walk by and see a green lump." She snorted as she was talking. "How on earth did you get up in the tree anyway? What are you? A cat?" Saty might live in a tree but climbing them without ladders wasn't somthing that she did well.
Frazzled up that this poor Jivvin was getting her facts wrong Sanyu made her decent down which ended in her on just 3 legs. Almost stuck the entire landing. She managed to pull it off though and wrapped her long blue tail around her. Alright... So the Jivvin was a lot bigger then her. But she wasn't about to budge.
"I'm not green, I'm not afraid of anyone seeing me and I climbed up. It's not that difficult. Just have to know where to pull on. Soon enough I'll be able to just fly up there. You watch, brownie. There is nothing at all wrong with blue." As Sanyu spoke of flying a small glint appeared in her eyes, which was quickly covered up by a bark of scorn-fullness.
Saty just stayed seated where she was. She was sure that she had seen this jivvin around somewhere, most likely the center, but that was mute. She gave a shrug "My brother's blue and he's a total wimp." The small jivvin in front of her had wings... that explained the up in the tree thing. the more you had to balance with the more gracefull you could be and the better you would be able to climb a tree... she nodded at the medium blue jivvin. "I never was any good at climbing trees without ladders. "
"I'm nothing close to a whimp. I must be the acception to the rule... My adopted brother's blue too. But he's also a Skull Monkey, so that could be the reason all in it self right there..." Sanyu shook her head and laughed a little. Dissing on Rome was always one of her favorite hobbies.
"I can't say that I've ever climbed a tree with a ladder... Then again I've never needed one." The zest in her words was slowly starting to ease up, but that could very easily change.
Satou laughed again. "I live in a tree. I have a tree house and all, but" She rolled her shoulders. "No wings to helf me along." and as for the blue thing... she nodded as if she understood "One of my brothers is a Skull Monkey. He's older than I am." She stood up and started to walk over to the lake shore.... pounced a flower for fun along the way.
"You live in a tree? That's cool. I'm stuck in a packed house that I got stuffed into a while ago. The most annoying people ever live there... I sware. Best part of it is the view from the roof." There must be something about people having Jivvin's and Skull Monkey's... "Are they all cocky little carpet munchers?"
Still unaware as to the brown Jivvin's name Sanyu followed her. A worthy advisary... As for the flower pouncing. Everyone has their fun. Sanyu just side stepped the dirt as it shot up.
Saty stopped and used her front paw to grind a yellow flower right down into the dirt... "I was adopted by Keppit when I was a small child." She picked up her paw and inspected the very very flat flower and sneered at it. "What is it about people that they think they can just rip children away from their parents and families and expect them to just fall nice and sweetly into a new situation?" She pounced on a second flower and ripped it up with her teeth... then she turned and grinned at the other jivvin with a mouthfull of dirt and a broken flower. "I'd like to call my brother and his son carpet munchers but he'd pound me down into the dirt." She spat the flower and it's ground out and pounced onto another flower.
Sanyu watched the Jivvin pounce around, now understanding a bit of her frusteration and personality. Though she was wincing when the brown one bit into the flower and ripped it up. "I don't get it either! Try being ripped away as a teen and placed in a house then given away to another like a hand-me-down. I was recently given to Monkey. I was doing just fine where I was in the first place! When I was living with X things were... Well I could disappear and no one would be the wiser. No one really cared with so many things running around." Upon hearing that she'd get pounded into the dirt Sanyu raised an eyebrow and smirked. "Ah, I see... So I take it you've been pounded in to the dirt yourself?"
She turned to the water and looked out over it. "Can't remember much about switching families... I remember my mom, and then I was with Keppit and Gus and Jen and .... I tried to find my mom, but I was too young to even know her name or anything." She laughed wryly. "You know how many people out there go by the name mom?" Then she turned to the lake and leapt into the water.
Wow... Deffenatly an earthy type... Love of dirt (completly unnatural), lives in a tree (totally out of the question), and now water? Wow. Sanyu watched her swim. She obviously didn't really want to talk about it. So a small apathetic smile was given and then the subject quickly changed.
"What's your name anyhow?"
Saty swam back in towards the shore and looked up at the smaller blue jivvin. "Satou... but my brothers and the two jivvins that I consider my friends call me Saty most of the time." She shrugged but then realized that her shoulders were under the water and couldn't be seen... "Why? What's your name?"
Ech... That water had to be muddy and filled with god only knows what... "Ah, I'm Sanyu. No nicknames as of yet. Just, Sanyu." She didn't have a long introduction for herself, just a name.

(( May 05 2006 ))
Satou turned and looked into the mirror on the dresser. With a heavy heartfelt sigh and sad smile to herself she turned to her journal and began to write... Sure she was happy and sure she was more than adjusted to this life, not really a new life, but this life. She really liked her family, Keppit and Ran and Gus and Jen... They were all great people. But there was something missing and she felt that she knew what it was... but how to tell them.
Alexander, on the other hand, was out walking in the woods behind the jivvin center. He had been taking brief walks out here almost everyday for the last month, but he'd never been THIS far into the woods. Truth be told, the purple jivvin was looking for something... for someone. There had been someone out here that one day. He was sure it had been a jivvin... He had just never learned it's name.
And then somewhere nearby... in a bush, or perhaps a tree, maybe even a hole in the ground.... someone watched Alexander plod noisily through the forest. Watched in thought. He wasn't very old, but E'layeth had plans for this king...
Gus walked by the blackjack counter with a bag of coins slung over his shoulder. It was grunt-work, but at least he wasn't selling cigarettes to foul breathed old ladies anymore... now when they asked if they could pet his ears or stroke his tail at least they didn't always smell of tobacco and alcohol... it was a little better. He adjusted his red vest on his thin torso and started off towards the slot machines where, surely, there would be people waiting to cash in bills for quarters.

(( Satou and Arar :: July 04 2006 ))
He had wandered from home once more, carrying that tiny basket containing his egg along with him. He couldn't exactly leave it alone... Afterall, what would happen if it hatched while he was away?
Nope. Wasn't going to happen.
This time he moved beyond the forest, padding up onto the Jivvin Center's porch. He set the basket down gently on the floor before flopping down beside it, tail curling around the base. "... I still don't know what I'm going to do with you. Skye's gotta be crazy."
"Humans ARE crazy." Saty stepped out the front door onto the porch. "I assume that you're talking about a human, It's part of their nature you know." She smiled kindly at the Afya and sat down on the porch a short distance away from him. "You can still love them and like them, but they're all crazy."
He snorted softly. "You don't haveto tell me that they're crazy. I know that well enough, having lived with one for..." He closed his eyes for a moment, trying to figure out just how long he'd been living with Skye anyways. He gave up after a moment, quickly shaking his head. "... Long enough. She's gotta have at least one or two screws loose... Trusting me with an egg."
She braked a laugh... "I've lived with two different humans." she glanced down at the egg... it almost made her miss her brother already. Jeez, she'd only been gone for three days. "It's pretty. I like the colour. Do you know the rank yet?"
"I... Think I have." His nose scrunched slightly as he tilted his head towards the female. "Lived with two different humans, that is. I know that there was something before Skye... But I can't remember what. I live at her house, but, in a sense, I belong to the whole family... Or, rather, I am a part of the family."
His eyes drifted down to the purplish egg, tail flickering away from it as he leaned down to nudge it with his muzzle. "No... I don't know anything about it other than its color... And that, when it hatches, Skye says it is my job to take care of it."
She snorted... "That's a big responsibility... did you ask for it?" That was a lot. She sometimes didn't know if she could even take care of herself, and here was this other jivvin, obviously sorted out enough that he could care for another being. He was probably an Afya, or a royal perhaps... certainly not a winged... he'd have wings in that case.
"Royal or Afya? You I mean... " She had that 'say what she wanted' quailty... it made people either like her or hate her...
"Ask for it?" Oh, that was good. He laughed, shaking his head in the negative. "No. Of course, in the case of the dragon, not many people ask for the things that she thrusts upon them. She sees a need for something and acts upon it... Bugger what anyone else might think."
He paused for a moment, eyes returning to the female as he answered her second question. "Afya." Of coure, he wasn't sure how good of one he was. He'd heard that most of them were quite the happy creatures. He had been... At one point in time.
Now? Now he felt like a sarcastic old man determined to teach younger generations a lesson... Somehow.
"My brother's an Afya... he's the exact same age as I am." She liked Afyas in general... Her only friend that was a jivvin was a female afya, and generally... generally afyas were good guys. Annoyingly good sometimes.
"Maybe your mom knows things that we don't know... maybe you're supposed to get a jivvin egg to teach and whatnot..." She didn't really believe that, and it might have come through in her voice... "I don't think I could ever take care of anyone else.... I'm too screwed up."
It was a good thing that she didn't really believe it... Because he didn't really believe it either. Should he have? 'Course not... Which was why he opted to not respond on that particular note.
"I doubt you're screwed up... At least, not nearly as much as you might believe yourself to be, if you are at all. Afterall... You've never attacked your best friend, have you?"
And at that she alughed good and hard... "You name the jivvin, chances are I've attacked them, physically or verbally. I used to be an angry screwed up kid... now I'm settled and just screwed up." She clicked her claws against the porch and wrapped her tail around her back feet.
"I'm Satou."
"Oh, I don't think you would've attacked him... You see, Kuro doesn't tend to get out much." He couldn't help but smirk slightly at that, letting his ears flicker towards the sound of the female's voice. "My name is Aaralyn, although I've been called Aara by my family... And a few less plesant things as well at times."
She smiled. "Saty to my friends and family" She had come here to the center to say goodbye to Kylara, but she wasn't here. Now this Afya was providing what was proving to be a nice cap on Saty's bonded jivvin experiences. He was honest... it was a quality that she admired and was found so very seldom. "I haven't talked to anyone in a long time. but I seem to remeber Kuro... red right?"
He lowered his head to his paws, letting a sigh fall from his mouth. "Yes." As for honesty? He saw no reason to be dishonest. One could learn things in two ways... Through experiences of their own... And the experiences of others.
If anyone could learn from the mistakes that he himself had made... So be it. "You are the first that I have newly met in quite some time. It is nice to see someone new that isn't family."
"Yes it is." and it was. She didn't know him and he didn't know her... neither one was making judgements about the other and everything was good. At least for now...
"But if we didn't live our lives for the individual moments then we'd never live at all... " She had spoken out loud on accident, and looked over in surprise. "The past is the past... unless..."
"If there is one thing that I've come to learn it is this..." He paused fo a moment, looking up to the female before continuing. "Everything that happens in our lives is for a reason, even if we don't quite understand it as it happens. Even if I could change the past I wouldn't... If it was changed, would we be here talking now?"
She thought for a moment... "I honestly don't know." I was adopted out. I was so young when it happened that I only ever knew my first mom as mom... I couldn't look her up or find her or ask her why or anything... Who knows what would have happened if I had stayed there." She smiled a smile that was half sad... "I might be happier... I might be insane... I might be in love... I might be unloved... I might be dead. But all that's useless specualtion... I think. I love my new Mom... took me a while though." And now? now she was moving out... leaving... for... god only knows. That was the future. And it had better be better than the past.
"I can't really remember anything before I came to live with Skye... I was happy though. Extremely so. To be there... To be anywhere. In that happiness, which I'd been told was quite obnoxious, I didn't have a care in the world... For myself or anything else. Life was a game and I thought everyone should see it that way and be happy to play it." He shook his head slowly. "Life is a game... But it's a game of strategy. I... I think you're placed where you're meant to be. Somehow." He was either making sense... Or blowing steam.
"So we're all pawns... I've heard that one before." The thought really didn't phase her anymore. It couldn't matter, since if it did she'd never really be happy. "I don't know." She wasn't upset just ... normal. "I just don't like the idea that I'm not in charge... I'm about as warrior as you get."
"No... Not pawns... But, even if we were, you could always think of it this way... When the game's over the paun and the king go into the same box. It's more than that though... Much more, I'm sure." He smiled as he pushed himself up onto his paws. "I... Don't mean to depart in the middle of such a conversation, but something tells me I should be wandering home now. We'll meet again, yes?"
"I doubt it." She stood and smiled at him genuinely. "I'm leaving today. I've decided that I may never be comming back. I did, however, enjoy your company very much and I'll always remember this conversation... brief as it was." She gave him a short bow... "I wish you the best of luck with your new responsibility. I know you have it in you to be a good caretaker." She winked and smiled at him.
"If it's meant to be we'll meet again." He nodded with a grin. "If it isn't, it isn't... Either way, I wish you just as much luck with your adventures from here on out. I'm sure that, somewhere, you'll find what you're looking for." He scooped the basket's handle into his mouth before trotting off of the porch, settling it down to turn back to the female once more. "Thank you for your confidence, Saty. It was a pleasure meeting you this eve." That said he lifted his charge once more, disappearing into the woods with a flicker of fluffy blue tail.
The brown Jivvin watched him leave and smiled as he went. It had been a nice conversation.
And then when she could no longer see him, she stepped down off the porch and headed off into the woods at a slightly different angle. She was after the Wild Jivvins, but who knew where that was? She had been there once, but that certainly didn't mean anything. This was the way Jack had taken her last time and so this was where she started... she'd let Aara's fate take charge of her now.

(( Satou, Eos and Eleos :: Jan 01 2007 ))
Saty puffed out her cheeks as she held her breath. This was hard work, but she was here... she was in the village and she was allowed to be here. That was all that mattered right?
Her hands ached from all the blisters that had popped up, but they had told her to dig up this flower bed. So dig she did...
But it was hard work. "This sucks."
Shaking his head he walked though the village heading for the gardens. Eos was once again proving his power in the arena and he'd decided to let the other have his fun. He could only put a dent in the other Uutli's pride every so often without repercussion.
Humming softly he fluffed out one wing before tucking it back behind him. He would have to clean them later if he didn't want them hurting. Satou looked up for a brief moment, and in that moment she saw a light haired wild jivvin man walking down the path... this was normal... but she had happened to look up at just the moment that he had spread one wing out to inspect the pinions there... and that was something that she'd never seen before.
The ruffling feathers caught her attention and snared her eyes from her gardening. The wing was amazing in both size and ... and size! But then it would have to be, it had to carry a grown jivvin man...
She was staring... Staring with her mouth open.... staring with her mouth open and dirt on her hands and face. He almost hadn't noticed the female kneeling in the dirt but after looking past her and then back he smiled. She was, well gaping, at him as he tucked his wings back to where he could walk easily.
"Hello. Are you another they've gotten to dig in the dirt for them?" His voice was as sweet as he looked but there was something under there that spoke of the trouble he could get into. "I uh..." She stammered. "It's..." Wait... what was she doing? "Can you fly?"
And then she realised that she was acting insane. She scrambled to her feet and hurridly brushed the dirt off her (or at least tried to) "I mean... um... Yes." She sighed and gave in. "Yes I'm digging in the dirt. I was told to dig in the dirt and here I am. I'm kind of new here in the village and so I get the nasty tasks." Digging wasn't particularly nasty, but when the area had played 'litterbox' to some unspeakably large animal, then it became nasty.
"I'm Satou." Her face said plainy that she was both amazed at the size of his wings, and embarased at being caught in the dirt starring at the poor man. "Yes as a matter of fact i can." He spread out his wings for a moment. The gold on the feathers glittered slightly before he pulled them back. "Though i would not suggest it in such proximity to buildings. I am Eleos'dikidi, though you may call me Eleos"
That was always kinder than letting people suffer trying to pronounce the whole thing. No one ever got it right for the first few hours. "Digging in the dirt can be productive. Nothing would grow if there was no one to tend it."
She nodded slowly, eyes wide. His wings were... Damn. "Satou..." A small part of her brain kicked her as she realized that she'd already told him her name. "Saty... Satou, Saty... Saty's the short version... um... obviously." she sighed inwardly, and looked down at the dirt. Nothing would grow... "So they tell me. I'm just trying to do it right. Just to make sure that I'm not... you know... considered lazy or worthless or anything." She flexed her thumbs... thumbs were nice.
"You're Uuthli right? Do all Uuthli have wings like... um..." She pointed "Like those?" She hadn't been very social back at the Center, and the only Fourther Uuthli she'd talked to there was Jack... and Jack's wings were... not there any more.
He walked over and picked up a seed from the grass beside the flowerbed. "They are rather picky about who they let stay in here, i would take it then that you were not born here? Perhaps born to that little building out of the forest?" He had met one from that place. A rather nastily tempered red Daewl.
"Yes, we all have wings like this though the size depends on our size. My friend Eos's wings are larger than mine." Then again he only came to Eos's shoulders so that made perfect sense. "Yeah... um... the Center." She paused. "I came here to live in the village since I'm unbonded... They asked me a bunch of questions and then they gave me a crystal." She smiled, it couldn't be helped. "I've always wanted to... to have thumbs." Her grin widened as she flexed her thumbs cheesily for him to see.
"It must be nice to be able to fly.... But I bet your wings are heavy. And if you say that your friend's wings are even bigger I bet his are even heavier." She watched his hand with the seed in it. "Ahh so they changed you." He nodded at that. He'd heard that it could be done but he'd never met one of the ones who had changed though the crystals.
"Actually they are rather light. Then again i also was born with them." He'd always figured that the Uuthli were lighter than the others since they were able to fly. It would make sense for their bones to be lighter. "Were the weight taken away i would be rather unbalanced" She laughed quickly as she pictured him falling over forwards and then stopped just as quickly as Jack popped into her head. That was rude of her. One shouldn't unintentionally make fun of one's friends. Especially when they had as few as Saty did.
"I think I would feel vulnerable with wings." The thought came to her suddenly, and she said it before she could think about it. But she really did feel that way. "I'd be scared to lose them... or break them, or damage them.... they're so pretty." They might be just as harmful as helpful in a dangerous situation... "Have you ever been in a fight? A serious one?" She was interested in knowing if he thought his wings gave him an advantage. He chuckled. This was the exact same conversation he had taken part in with some of the younger Jivvin training to use a sword. "They can be both an advantage and a disadvantage." He nodded. "They give you extra balance in strange positions but yes they can be damaged easily."
He rolled one shoulder and remembered when Eos had caught his wing with his sword and almost broken it. "Every advantage has a disadvantage and vice versa" Satou nodded. So he had been in fights... and probably training as well. "I look forward to some kind of training." She hadn't asked about if and/or when she would be consisdered for training, but she hoped... "I'm hoping that digging up the flower beds is just a set up for bigger and grander things." She ached to learn anything and everything about Jivvins, especially fighting. But that was in her blood. "Everyone must start somewhere." He looked around at the other flowers. "Some of the richest people have come from nothing but dirt." He smiled at her for a moment. "If you do seek training do not let Eos's slivery tongue sway you."
Eos would have smacked him for that but thankfully the golden Jivvin was not around to hear him. "Eos's slivery tongue"... She wasn't sure what that meant. "Eos is your friend with the bigger wings?" Surely this angelic looking Jivvin had no trouble making friends - he was probably not even refering to the same person as he had been earlier. "Does he like to fight then?" She couldn't help but think that if anyone would offer to teach her to use a weapon and think quickly in situations then she could put up with silver tongues. "Yes that is the same Eos. We have a rather .... unique relationship." He looked back in the direction of the arena. "We have known each other for a long time. I helped train him with a sword and now he keeps me on my toes. He would hate it if i lost my touch and he had no one worthy to spar with" "Spar..." Someday. Weed more dirt and then someday. She promised herself to ask the Sargtlin next time she saw him.
"Funny that you should want to be one your toes when you could fly..." It was supposed to be a joke, but... enh. She really wasn't at her social best today. She felt awkward here in the village and meeting angelic jivvins with huge muscular wings, made her feel all gawky. She wanted to be powerful and self assured like Eleos seemed to be. Then maybe... No. She wouldn't allow herself to dream about things that couldn't be. A jivvin's bond was ultimate and sacred.
"Is that where you were just now? Sparring?" "I much prefer walking to flying. Though it is nice to float around when the sun is not too bright." He walked around the flower bed and rested a hand on her shoulder.
"No, i had not gone to the arena today but perhaps i should. Would you like to join me? I'm sure no one would complain if you were to watch them swing their swords at each other" Saty jutted her head forward slightly as if she had misheard what had been said. "you... What? Seriously?" She started to walk out onto the path and then realized that she was still carrying the hoe. quickly she turned and lay the tool at rest against the side of the fence nearby and stepped back out onto the path. She made a valliant effort to wipe away some of the caked dirt and mud on her hands clothing and face, but no actual progress. Still.... "Is it far?" "No it is not far." He chuckled as he leg her though the village. "If they are practicing hard then you may even hear them before we get there."
If Eos was there it would be almost certain that they would hear the sound of swords before they reached the arena.

(( continued :: ))
He was there... There wearing no more than his leather leggings and boots as he sparred against another Jivvin who looked younger than he was but looks were known to be decieving. His wings spread to catch his body as he was forced back with the sound of steel against steel. Curses were kept to himself as, today, he was trying his hardest to practice the lesson he needed to learn above all others: Curb. Your. Temper. Satou did indeed hear the clash of weaponry as they neared the arena, and the sound was like music to her ears. She had always wanted to just hit something or someone... but growing up in a kind household with happy siblings and a loving mother and .... um... mother... Growing up there in the cabin hadn't made it so that she was justified in 'hitting things and/or people' . Once they neared the areana it became apparent that this was the place of her dreams.
And there, in his pants and boots, was a big male jivvin... She pointed. "That's your friend right?" "Yes it is." He chuckled as he walked as far as he could without stepping into the arena. "Though i am surprised he is not cursing up a storm at the beating he is getting." Generally if anyone other than him was getting the better of Eos he could not keep a leash on his tongue. He swallowed his frustrations, taking a deep breath before battering onwards. He'd be damned if that green witch hadn't been right... If he kept his frustrations in he could focus them on the attacks that he needed to make. One... Two... Step... Spin... Clank! A sword dropped to the ground. A sword that, for once, was not his own.
He looked the other Jivvin in the eye before lowering his sword and bowing. "Well fought. Come and find me if you'd ever like to find yourself beaten again." Cocky much? But of course. Satou fought down a grin as she managed to hear Eos's closing remarks. It was rude and yet... fitting. Something she herself hoped to be able to say... though she could more see herself standing on the other side looking down at a sadly dented, dropped, and muddy sword that had once been in her hand. She fidgited slightly on her feet as she looked around at the jivvins practicing weaponry. There was a lot of trust going on here.
"He won." "Most likely." He laughed as he sheathed his sword, turning towards the voice of his friend only to find his brows lofting. "Why, Leo, had I known that you were bringing a lady friend with you to the arena I might not have taken my shirt off..." That smile on his lips pronounced that as a lie. He would have anyways if only to show off.
He held his hand out towards the Jivviness. "Eosphorus... But you may call me Eos." He bowed, wings flaring slightly to balance him as he did so. Satou grinned and immediately felt awkward. Damn. She didn't know what to focus on as he came towards her. No shirt, practical boots, long blonde hair, flaring wings... wings... She watched his wings adjust slightly with each step, much the same way that Elios' had. What had this new Jivvin man called him? Leo? She turned and stared at Elios for a moment and then turned and stared at Eos again... then...
Damn. "Satou." She blurted it out and thrust her hand out to meet his. "Satou... Saty for short." She smiled, and stil... felt goofy. His hand came up on reflex to smack Eos for calling him Leo but he managed to pull it back before he did. He could get him back for it later where it wasn't in public. "Had i warned you then you would have made certain that your shirt was off"
He fluffed slightly as Eos turned his charm toward Satou. Of course he should have expected that and he had but that didn't mean he couldn't hope it wouldn't happen at least once. He caught her hand, bringing it up to his lips to brush a light kiss against the back of her knuckles despite the dirt. He might be an egotistical jerk, but he at least knew how to treat ladies... Even if the ladies had been digging around in gardens all day. "It is, most certainly, my pleasure to meet you Satou. I had no idea that Leo had such lovely friends."
He turned towards his friend as he released the young woman's hand. "Shame on you for not telling me things like this, Eleos. Haven't I told you to alert me every time you meet such a creature? Especially ones that are new to the villiage?" Oh, yes. She had to be new. Afterall, he hadn't seen her around before. She wrinkled up her face in confusion and mild shock as he lifted her hand to his face, and she was about to raise protest as to the whereabouts of her current hygeine but he was too quick for her.
"Yeah... um... I'm new. I've only been here for about a week." She extracted her hand with a slight frown. She had noticed that Eli's face had fallen slightly when Eos had taken her hand. He sighed. "How may times have i told you not to call me Leo?" Doubtful Eos would ever stop but he could always hope. He really did hate the nickname.
"And if you must know i have just met her myself a few minuets ago so it wasn't as if i was delaying your greeting her." He rolled his eyes. "I spoke with her and then brought her here to see you as she seemed interested in the sword" He smiled at Satou as he spoke. "As many times as I, in turn, must tell you that I will continue to call you such until it no longer bothers you. How many times has that been by now, my friend?" He flashed Eleos a warm smile as he made his way towards the bench where he'd kept his shirt, figuring it best to clothe himself sooner than later.
He pulled his shirt over his head, wings fading into nothingness as he did so. He then turned towards the young woman. "Ah, in the case, welcome to the Village. If it is swordsplay you are interested Leo here is certainly a good place to start. The Green Lady of this arena would also be a good place..." Even if she was a witch. "Green Lady?" She glanced over at the shorter Jivvin to try and discern if Eos was joking with her. Truth be told she would welcome swrodplay with pretty much anyone, but there was one person in particular she wanted to learn from... and he wasn't here.... and he wouldn't be here. "Don't I need some kind of aproval from some kind of authority figure, a council member or something to get a..." she waved her hand at the arena... "Sword or something?" The word 'sword', spoken with the intent of implying ownership, just didn't sound right to her at all. She'd never picked up a sword in her life. "One day you will just remember that i do not like it and cease calling by that name"
To her he said "A darling woman who left him on his a** once." He chuckled. "I believe she was good for him in a way." He remembered Eos after she had finished with him. The Uuthli had needed someone other than him to put him in his place.
"I doubt any of them would complain if one more person wished to learn. The village always needs people to keep an eye on things and the more that are proficient in the art of the sword the better" "The Green Lady of the Arena is none other but our own Aleda." He nodded slowly, scrunching his nose as Eleos began to preach her wonders. If his friend was going to ramble than he was going off. "I doubt they'd mind as long as you voiced intrest in wanting one. Again, I would talk to the Green Lady about that... Only... Don't call her the Green Lady." Because that would be bad and, somehow, it would get back to being his fault.
He stretched out, fighting off a yawn before turning to the two. "You will have to forgive me, Saty... Leo... I do believe it is time for me to take a rest. Afterall, someone has to be up all night for the midnight patrol." Eventually they'd take him off of that... Hopefully. Satou nodded intently at everything that was said. "Aleda." She knew Aleda... and depending on who she saw first, Aleda or Lysuis, she would make mention of her interest in combat training.
Eos looked as if he had been training all day... and he looked tired. So it was little surprise when he excused himself. Satou turned back to 'Leo' and smiled sadly... "I really should get back to my dirt patch. Thank you for showing me this though." "I should return to my books. I haven't had my cup of tea for the day." He chuckled softly. "Do speak to Aleda she will perhaps let you join the training." He nodded as his wings shifted as he turned. "It would be good to have another lady who could put Eos in his place"
"I am sure the flowers will be lovely when you are through with them." Bowing slightly he headed toward his home with a final wave to her. It was nice that the council had allowed one not born there into the village. Fresh faces were always welcome.
Satou grinned and mentally tallied her friend count up to five. That was quite the number, considering... She turned and walked back to her gardening supplies, thinking that surely tomorrow would bring her closer to realizing another of her dreams.

(( Satou, Lysius and Soyala :: Apr 23 2007 ))
Satou found herself walking briskly across the village. She was a woman on a mission, and she wasn't about to be stopped. She was on her way to see Soyala, and though the prospect of seeing Soyala again was daunting, her mind was made up. She crossed the path in front of Bonnit's house and waved to the man as she passed.
The only time she stopped long enough to talk to anyone was when her boot came untied and she had to stop and fix that dilema. Soyala's little house was, unfortunately, not only clear across the Village, but a short ways into the forest as well--not to mention invisible unless she wanted you to see it. However, she was actually quite looking forward to Satou's visit; the Daewl knew her guest would arrive shortly, even if Satou hadn't warned her of the visit, and was presently preparing some tea for her visitor's pending arrival.
Meanwhile, in the village, Lysius was just bidding goodbye to Raechel after a brief visit of his own to the Afya's. After a wave to the healer, he turned and started down along the road towards his own home to check in briefly before continuing on to the arena. Life in the Village had been comfortably dull of late, which meant a storm was undoubtably brewing somewhere. He would ensure that his Sarglins, at the very least, were ready when that storm arrived.
Initially he noticed Satou only out of the corner of his eye, and, crouched as she was to lace up her boot, he continued on past her without so much as batting an eye. However, only a brief moment later, her appearance clicked, and he froze in place. For the first time in who knew how many years, the Sargtlin looked....scared. Slowly Lysius turned in place, eyes narrowed in confusion as they fell back to the should-be stranger, for the moment simply watching her.
Satou finished tying her boot up and stood slowly giving herself time to stretch out her leg which had cramped slightly. She turned a little on her spine to try and get out a kink, and in the process she noticed Lysius staring at her... It startled her a little and she tried to pretend that she hadn't notcied... but that didn't last long...
"Can I... Can I help you?"
Fear gave way to complete and utter confusion as she spoke, and the moment she fell silent the Sargtlin started over, hesitating briefly just infront of her before placing his hands on her arms. "Satou?" Lysius seemed completely and utterly out of his element, not at all the strong,self-assured Sargtlin of moments before. "Saty? Wha... what are you doing here? Where did you come from? Where have you been?!" Satou backed up slightly... a very confused look on her face.... "I don't.... how do you know my name?" It was a straightforward question and also a cheesy one. She knew it was cheesy when she said it, but she couldn't think of anything else to say....
"I don't think I know you..." Said with confusion... "You are Satou," he mumbled aloud, more to reassure himself than to actually have her verify. There was no mistaking her. She was...different than when he had last seen her, certainly, but that had been...how many years ago? "Where have you been? Of course you know me." He paused briefly and what little hope had risen in his expression faded away once more. "..Don't you? Saty?" She shook her head slowly... back and forth... back and forth... but she stared back at him. Meeting his eyes without faltering, somehow trying to tell if this was a joke.
But by the look on the man's face, it wasn't a joke. He really thought that he knew her... "My name is Satou... people call me Saty... but not many people, because only my family calls me that... I haven't seen them for months... " she stared back at him for a second. "You're very handsome... but I've never seen you before." "You're joking with me," he insisted with a weak laugh, and gave her arms a little squeeze, smile returning ever so slightly. "You have to be. You couldn't just forget... That's impossible." Despite his words, he seemed far from sure of himself. It wasn't as if situations of the sort happened just every day. People didn't come back from the dead. "It's Lysius, remember? We... we're married, Saty." When he gave her arms a squeeze she wanted to pull away, but when he said they were married she did pull away... quickly and forcefully. And the look on her face went from confusion to fear.
"I'm not playing with you. I grew up at the Jivvin center, and I lived in the woods with a human and other center Jivvins... I just petitioned to move into the village two months ago." She stammered the whole explination fearfully, as if saying it faster would make it easier to resolve this.
"I swear I've never seen you before..." She cowered from him... "You're scaring me." Her sudden retreat stunned him, and he released her arms with complaint, hands hovering briefly in the air before falling back to his sides. "But..." He cleared his throat and ran a hand throat his hair, hesitating a moment longer before turning his back on her. What had he been doing? He was going somewhere--the arena. No, he didn't need to go there, the arena could wait. Saty had been in the Village for two months? And no one had told him?! No one had questioned it?! ...Maybe he was imagining things? He glanced back over his shoulder, half expecting her to have vanished, and when she hadn't he fought to control his expression and nodded slightly. "My...mistake. I apologize." Saty just stood there clutching her arms where he'd held them. He looked so flustered, and it just scared her more... He really thought he knew her. But she DID NOT KNOW HIM.
She just nodded slowly "It's ok..." whispered the comment and turned back on her path to Soyala's... she took three or four steps before turning back to make sure he wasn't following her, and then she ran...
She ran as far as she could towards the Daewl's house before she had to stop and catch her breath. Saty stood there panting resting bent over with her hands on her knees... "I've never seen him before..."
Then she straightened and walked quickly the rest of the distance to Soyala's house... she was about to knock on the front door, but she turned back for one last look down the path... just to make sure.
nothing... *knock knock* He hadn't followed, no. He had considered it, and it was incrediably difficult to force himself to remain in place, but he had. She didn't know him, why should he follow? But why didn't she know him? Did anyone else know her? He needed to talk to Kyros... And he needed to talk to Jack.
Forgetting the arena completely, he hurried up the road in the opposite direction that Satou had gone, face drawn and pale as he made his way to the Vhaid's.
Come in, came the odd, echo-y voice of the Daewl from, apparently, directly above the Sargtlin a split second after Satou's hand left the door. The door in question swung open to admit Satou through, hovering patiently in place before closing behind her. The room hadn't changed in the least since Satou's last visit so long ago, save perhaps for the tea set carefully arranged on the coffee table and the white Daewl nestled in a chair beside it. The Daewl offered Satou a warm smile and lifted a hand towards a second chair, gesturing for Satou to join her. I've been expecting you. Have you been enjoying your stay in the Village? Saty smiled slowly and nodded. "I have. It's what I've always wanted..." But there was something wrong about it... she couldn't bring herself to admit it out loud to the villagers who had helped her so much in the last few months... but she could probably tell the white jivvin. That was after all why she was here.
"You knew I was coming?" She had heard strange things about Soyala, and it was true that her name was the one to drop if you needed to inspire sudden awe... "I knew you could do that, I jsut didn't think that I was worth your 'knowning' things about me." She grinned... something about this woman made you admire her. "Do you know a Jivvin Villager with red and brown spotty ears and... gosh dangit, what did he say his name was?" She tried to think for a second... but she'd been so frightened over the experience that she couldn't remeber what he'd said his name was... "Started with an L.... But he said he knew me..." Said they were married.... "She looked up at Soyala, bitting her own lip in her confusion. She wasn't scard any longer, rather she flet safe here.
Good, good! she praised with a smile, lips moving only as she took a sip of her tea. I'm glad you are happy. And of course I did. I always know when someone nears my home... If I didn't, you wouldn't be able to find it, she pointed out as if this made perfect sense. To the Daewl, after all, it did. The wards around her home had been up for who knew how long. Unless she wanted someone to find the tiny cottage, actually entering it was impossible.
The white Daewl lifted a brow curiously at the question, though she didn't seem particularly surprised by Satou's words. Lysius, she supplied immediately, with a pitying air in the unspoken voice. She sighed softly, this one an audible sound, and set down her cup, instead helping herself to a cookie from a bowl on the table. He's the head of your rank, actually. Poor soul... Hasn't been quite right since his wife passed, I dare say. A brief image of amusement passed across the Daewl's face, but just as quickly it was gone, replaced by the same sorrowful expression. He said you were married, you say? she asked without lifting her eyes from her snack, even if Satou hadn't verbally said such a thing. Pay him no mind, he mixes people up sometimes. He lost a lot of friends to the massacres. "Lysius! That's right that's what he said his name was." She stopped again to think, picked up her cup of tea and stared down into it for a second before taking a sip. "I've heard so much about him." She'd actually been meaning to find an excuse to meet him, because surely that was what Village jivvins did... they introduced themselves to their rank heads... "But not in this day and age is seems." She said the last bit outloud. It's been so long since she had lived with a personal bond that she'd been out of practice talking telepathically... she knew that Soyala would get most of it anyway. She'd read some of the public journals lef t behind by villagers that had told all about how the village was run, and satou found herself dissapointed by how much different the village she was living in seemed from the one described in teh journals... She wasn't sure it it was her, or the descriptions, or if the village really had changed...
"He was so scary..." He thoughts flitted back to Lysius... Lysius probably would have saught you out sooner had someone spoken of you directly to him, Soyala admitted quietly, and set down her half-eaten cookie on a napkin. She folded her hands on her lap and sat back in her seat, eyes returning to Satou while she explained. He is very devoted to his rank... I believe your arrival was somewhat glossed over, which may or may not have been a good decision on our Vhaid's part. I believe your similarities to Lysius's late wife had many of the Council worried as to how he would receive you. We rather expected a reaction of the sort.
He can be intimidating, she continued, sliding into the next subject with ease. Though he rarely means to be. A byproduct of being the head of the Sargtlin rank, I'm sure. Once he comes to his senses, he will probably seek you out and apologize for his behavior. It was a rare day indeed that Soyala would actually defend the Sargtlin head, but for the moment she seemed genuinely concerned for him...and for his appearance in Satou's eyes. Saty nodded again, something she was doing a lot today. "It was good to meet him I guess... Makes it less daunting if I ever ahve to talk to him again." She blanched at the thought of another Jivviness living a long time ago who looked like her and shared her name. Maybe Lysuis's wife had been her mother or her grandmother! But that was sad becuase that meant that her biological mother or grandmother was dead and that she'd never get to meet them.
She sighed and let herself sit back and enjoy the tea. "Soyala... I haven't gotten a chance to thank you... for allowing me to move into the village." She really meant it. "It's mostly what I always wanted." but... "i never dreamed it would be this slow moving and hard to get Jivvins to teach me things... but it's still great." The white Daewl laughed softly, a sing-songy, musical note to the sound, and shook her head. It was my pleasure, I assure you. I have never quite agreed with the Council's tradition of secrecy. Had my friends and I behaved as they do now, this Village would have never been established; the strangers would have been chased away from our forest. If we were kind enough to allow them into our land, they should offer the same privileges to the so-called Center Jivvins, such as yourself.
Soyala smiled fondly over at Satou and straightened up a bit in her seat. Jack shared your curiosity when he first arrived here... He wanted to know everything there was of the Village and its customs, of its history and need for secrecy. However, I would not encourage you to take his route. He was foolish, as he has realized in the time since. She paused briefly, eyes falling to her cup as she leaned forward to refill it. It will likely be some time yet before the Villages warm to you to the point that you truely begin to be one of them... There is a great level of distrust between the unbonded and those raised by humans. However, there are ways of getting around that... Saty sat forward slightly... "You're talking about when they took his wings, aren't you...." She remebered the rumors that had gone around when Jack had returned, sans the beautiful uthliti wings. "He wouldn't talk about it... but it must ahve been bad." Bad for Jack and whoever it was rumoured that he had killed to earn the punishment.
But there were ways to learn more quickly, do the things she longed to do, meet the jivvins she needed to meet, and be the jivvin she somehow knoew she wasn't living up to... "How? What do I have to do?" Mhm. Soyala frowned faintly, closing her eyes briefly as she lifted her cup to take a sip. Had circumstances differed slightly, he would have undoubtably been killed instead. He is lucky the situation played out as it did.
She said no more on the subject, and instead summoned back a smile, though her eyes remained focused on the rim of the teacup. Strangers have not been welcome in this village for many years now... Towards the last of the massacres, the Village was sealed off, and, under the formation of the Council, newcomers were strictly forbidden for some years to follow. During that time, with so few Jivvins, the village became extremely close-knit. You'll find almost everyone here already knows everyone else, if only by name in some cases. Back when the massacres were only just beginning, now... everyone was much more welcoming. Ironic. "So you're saying that everyone here knows I'm an outsider, and because they've been here for hundred's of years, it's going to take a long time for me to fit in..." She sighed and relaxed again, taking another drink of her cooling tea. "You got my hopes up for a second there, that's not very nice." but she was smiling as she said it. "I supposed that since I'm unbonded I have all the time in the world to work out my problems... and let's face it, I'm not brave enough to get myself killed by being stupid." She laughed.
"A hundred years from now I'll be everybody's best friend... I'll be where Lysius is now. Going crazy, seeing my dead wife in every jivvin that passes..." She knew that wasn't true. "he must be so sad." That's precisely what I'm saying. She chuckled softly as she listened an utterly disregarded the comment about Lysius and his sorrows, brushing it aside with only a nod. A hundred nears from now? Or a hundred years from then? Setting her cup down, she rose to her feet and stepped over to the window, drawing aside the curtain to peer out. The Jivvin House, have you heard of it, Satou? Satou furrowed her brow and nodded slowly. "Yeah... my mom used the doors there..." then it all started to click.. at least... she thought it had started to click. "But I thought we weren't allowed to... to travel... I thought there were rules against it."
"Wait... we are talking about me going back right?" She said it out loud for her own sake... just to better understand. The Council has long been confused as to the exact abilities of the doors... The center door, after all, is, for all intents and purposes, perfectly normal, then right door sealed away against any but my Daewl. But the door to the Past... Pausing, she turned away from the window and made her way back to her seat.
The concern in using the doors has always been the threat of altering the past. Attempting to change things that have happened by undoing them before they could happen, in a sense. However, this is impossible. The Past has already happened, it cannot rehappen. Everything that will ever happen in that time has by now, and nothing that has happened can be changed to change life today. Anyone who goes back to the Past has already been there. Do you understand? The Past is unalterable. If you go...you have already been there. "So..." she was grinning... "So I can go back and see if the village I dream about is the one that existed hundreds of years before my time, and there's nothing stopping me but me..."
"Don't get me wrong, it's not that I think badly of the village now... it's just." Why am I trying to explain this when I don't have to? "what am I waiting for? The Daewl only smiled. Folding her arms across her chest, she lifted a brow, inclining her head ever so slightly in the general direction of the House. I don't believe I'm the one you should be asking that, Satou. What -are- you waiting for? Satou suddenly leapt out of her chair and threw her arms around the Daewl... She wrapped the white jivvin in as tight a hug as she dared and then let go just as quickly. Thank you, friend. "thank you so much!" She downed her tea and headed out the door... she could be heard calling out from the path a moment later. "Thank YOU!"
She walked all the way back to the small cabin that she had been sharing with two other young jivvins. She spent a short while chopping up firewood in the front yard of the cabin, simply because she had said she would before... and then she packed her bag, said her goodbyes and she headed home.
She knew that she had to say goodbye to Keppit and Ranald... and Gus and Jen... and then she was headed for the Jivvin center... A hug was quite an unusual experience for the Daewl, and the surprise was clear on her face even after Satou released her and ran off out of the door and down the path. Chuckling softly, the Daewl shook her head, and with a wave of her hand sent away the tea set to wherever it had come from and went about her business. The little cottage blinked out of sight, and the forest was still once more.
Things were proceeding exactly as planned.

(( Lysuis while Satou is in the past )) Moofuls "She's alive! How is she still alive? And why doesn't she know me, Pirate?"Jack sighed, lifting a hand to rub his temples against a building headache, the umpteenth one since the unexpected call from the Sargtlin. After months of relative normality, things were suddenly topsy-turvy and splitting in six directions at once. Life certainly had gotten interesting all of a sudden. Some days back, midway through dinner, he had received, only seconds apart, two messages: one from the Sargtlin, one from the Vhaid, both demanding that he present himself to the Council at once. Without question he had abandoned his meal, and he hadn't been home since. He was exhausted. "Satou's from the Center, Lysius, she's not a Wi--"
"That's bloody irrelevant! She's here, and she's Satou, and she's...she's indentical . What did you do? You and that damned white witch..."He shook his head pushing the thoughts from his mind, and quickened his pace. It didn't matter. Satou, from what he gathered, had never even met Lysius before, and wasn't even in the Village any longer. Lysius was probably going batty in his old age. Jack chuckled softly, tension easing somewhat as he caught sight of the House through the trees. Soyala said Satou had run, had come here; this was where Satou would be...sort of. In the past, yes, but there was only the little town there. She would be easy enough to find. Everything could get worked out, Lysius could have his brain screwed in right, and Jack could go back to his normal life. He continued through the trees and onward into the clearing, pacing across the darkening lawn up towards the House and the left door, the Past door. He reached for the handle, twisting it open, but paused and released it, instead glancing straight up towards the hazy heights of the building. As if on a whim, he abandoned the door and instead moved to the center one, heading inside and straight down the hall to the stairway, up, up, pausing only to unlock the door to the Fourth Floor and, as an afterthought, relocking it behind himself. He retrieved a light sword from the armory near the entrace, and, hefting it awkwardly in one hand, set about a lazy exploration of the darkened floor. There was no rush. The Past had already happened, it wouldn't be changing, and something told him... He tensed, then spun in place and thrust the blade down into a small, shadowy, snake-like creature coiled as if to strike near his feet. The creature, stuck on the end of the sword, writhed for a moment, then faded and vanished. Back into the Fifth Floor, he knew, but not dead. Never dead. Satisfied, Jack rested the blade over one shoulder and turned to go, wandering back the way he had come. At the end of the long hallway he paused once more, struck with a sudden sense of unease. The hair rose on the back of his neck; someone was watching. Tightening his hold on the blade, he peeked back over his shoulder. For a split second he noticed a hazy white film hovering midway down the hall, and then it vanished, leaving the room utterly empty. Except, now, the door at the end, the door to the fifth floor, stood wide open.

(( Satou and Lysius :: Feb 27 2009 ))
Satou pulled back the window dressings and stared out into the yard. It was a nice day, but she had a feeling that it would be a little chillyl. There was still a spattering of melting snow in all the areas that didn't get walked enough, and it looked like the wind was blowing through the trees more than usual, so she grabbed a coat from the rack behind the door before she stepped out.
She knew where she was going, because there was a sort of line in her head that pointed to him. Of course he'd be in a good mood, it was a lovely day, and she herself was in a good mood... besides, she could feel him and his good mood. She grinned. This morning when she'd woken up, she'd decided to tell him sometime this week... but as it turns out, she couldn't wait that long. She had to tell him now.
They'd had a good breakfast before Lysius left to tend to the rank and his own responsibilities... Satou had stayed behind, as she had done every day since their reunion. She'd waited for Gus to wake up so she could get him some breakfast and talk some more with him before he went back to the Vhaid for another de-breifing... anyway, the rank really hadn't missed her, because when she'd been stabbed all those years ago, they'd given all her responsibilities away to sargtlins who had the advantage of not being dead. It bothered her a little, but part of her was still recovering from the very same stabbing, and she wasn't quite ready for a patrol.... besides, it would be bringing a fight into their house to even suggest to her husband that she wanted to be put back into danger... after all she'd put him through.
No need for that. It was a good day and she was in a good mood. Pulling her coat tighter around her, she headed to watch her husband training with whoever it was that was deemed worthy of his advanced blade.
The training arena was well known by all to be the assumed location of the Sargtlin at any point in time, provided, of course, that he wasn't at home with his lovely wife. His promotion to the rank of Sargtlin centuries ago had prevented him from actively participating in the regular patrols in the woodlands around the Village, and so he had indulged in what rank-associated tasks he could, taking a personal interest in the training and education of his rank.
Today was no exception and, as per usual, the Sargtlin could be found circling among the several training in the arena, barking instructions here and offering suggestions there, occasionally demonstrating a new maneuver which was then dutifully repeated by the student. Lysius was absolutely in his element--which, after hundreds of years at it, came as no surprise to anyone. He was as at home in the arena as he was with Satou, and certainly moreso than when paperwork and Council meetings drew him away.
In the back of his mind, Lysius was aware of Saty's approach, as he always was of her location now that she had returned to him. However, his primary focus, for the moment, was on his work, and she would understand that. Though, his mind pointed out, this was the first time she had even approached the arena since she had been back.... Perhaps that was worth worrying about.
Satou entered the arena and placed herself in the 'stands' as it were, though she didn't sit. Leaning on a railing, she watched her husband. Everytime he swung a sword or moved among the students, she was reminded her own training with the man... of course that had been fifty years ago for her, and more than 350 for him... and he hadn't been in charge then, not completely anyway. She did love watching him here like this though, and she wondered why she hadn't come down to watch yet... because it might make him uneasy, her brain supplied. That was the last thing she wanted to do. He'd basically been in constant mental torture for over 300 years... he deserved something nice. She grinned at him when he glanced at her, but didn't bother to wave. She knew he'd followed her approach, and she also knew that he could feel her smile as much as see it.
He could feel her smile, and it was the knowledge of that smile that kept him at his work for a good while longer. Satou was at ease, and enjoying herself. That didn't suggest anything worrisome. Perhaps she was just getting out of the house, though that didn't explain the arena. Why the arena? Despite Satou's cheery mood, her presence nagged at him. The last thing he wanted was Satou to show an interest in resuming her patrol work.
He had expected as much, had known it would come eventually. But it was so soon. She had hardly been back, hardly healed from that near-fatal wound that had kept her bedridden for weeks. Saty patroling would put her at risk, somewhere where he, whose presence was required in the Village, could not protect her. Concern and doubt tugged at him until he abandoned all efforts at work and, gesturing for his students to continue in their drills, left the arena floor to join Satou in the stands.
As Lysius approached, he fixed a rather strained smile to his face, though she would undoubtedly have picked up on his worrying already. "Saty, no one's going to get any work done if you hang around where the patrols can ogle you."
She just smiled at him and waved a hand, dismissing his statement. "You know I'm yours, and they all know I'm yours. They only want someone like me. I'm so far off the market it's probably hard for them to even tell I'm a girl." She came around the railing to where he was so that there wasn't a barrier in between them. "Besides, I was just wandering around the house, Gus has gone out again for whatever reason they still need him for." She knew why they wanted Gus, but she wasn't ready to change the conversation yet, so she plodded on. "And anyway, I had to come and talk to you about something." She grinned at him. "I couldn't wait."
This...was a very bad situation, Lysius very quickly decided. Saty was cheery, and calm, and buttering him up--all of which, for their bond, nudged him towards quite the same frame of mind. But she was here with something important to 'talk' about, here at the arena, where her intent was clear and he couldn't even put up a decent argument for the audience that would undoubtedly turn to any sort of scene. He cringed. "Couldn't it?"
"No." She chirped matter of factly, mildly aware of his mental distress, though still happy herself. "Over the last few months, it's been so wonderful to know that I've been able to make you happy, and so wonderful to be with you. I wouldn't have it any different, and I can't even begin to imagine what it must have been like to live all those years thinking I was dead." She reached up and ran her hand comfortingly down his arm. "I've been so proud of you, because I'm not sure that I could have lived through it, and I'm certainly glad you did." She paused a second in order to try and gain some mental momentum... "And I've also been thinking... that it's not the same... but that's a good thing! Because we've matured. We can accept who we are, and we're both stronger for it." She grinned at him suddenly "And it's alright because I've already figured out what would make our lives better... perfect even." ... and then she lost the momentum, suddenly not knowing how to say what she had to say...
No, no, no,no--he could very easily see where this was going, and he was not going to stand for it! It was too soon! And, well, perhaps now was the best time, for the Ssan were all still hibernating and...but no, they still hadn't found that Jivvin Gus and Klu'chud had spoken of. No, it was far, far too risky for his dear Satou--which, really, was a rather severe bias on his part, but what more could anyone expect of him? How could Satou even approach the subject, especially so casually? His life certainly wouldn't be 'perfect' for it....which she knew, he was sure. And that puzzled him.
He frowned, now more confused than anything, and simply nodded for her to continue. She sensed him warring with anger and confusion, and it caused her to frown at him. She stepped in closer to him and shook her head with a slight smile. She could only imagine the things going through his head right now, and certainly the best way to put them at ease was to just say it... "I didn't realize it was going to be this hard to say," she laughed slightly and stepped forward, placing her hands on either side of his face.
"Lysius, you're going to have someone to love and train and dote all over, as much as you do me." She grinned. "You're going to be a father."
He gave her a long, hard look, as if he hadn't quite understood her words. He had been bracing himself for something entirely different, and this... this! Lysius swept her up with a laugh, arms settling around her waist as he lifted her clear off the ground in a tight embrace. "Saty! You--You did that on purpose, damn you," he laughed, relief heavy in his voice as he set her lightly to her feet once more. "You're... How long have you known?" He was still terribly frazzled, but also clearly thrilled, though his excitement seemed to diminish somewhat as the truth of her words sunk in. "You've hardly recovered," he continued, sobering. She laughed out loud and just managed not to squeal like a child as he grabbed her up and spun her. She'd half expected that reaction, knowing him for all those years. She'd also expected him to bring up her health as a worry. "Lysius, I'm well enough for this, and it's not like I'm going on patrol or anything." She grinned at him once again. "Besides," She fussed at the ties on his shirt, mindlessly knoting them once again for good measure. "We're more than ready for this, and it's about time we gave it a go I think." Her original intention hadn't been to dote on him in front of the jivvins training in the arena, but he'd done away with that when he'd reacted so wonderfully.
"I haven't known very long, and I was going to tell you soon... It wasn't until after you left this morning that I decided that I couldn't wait any longer." She was still grining, obviously happy. "I think it was all the talking to Gus. I love seeing him again, having even more family around... and finally both my worlds have met..." What she didn't say was that she never liked not being able to tell him about her family before the accident, but she couldn't really get into the subject without also mentioning that she was from the future and such... Now everything was coming together.
