Careful with painkillers, if you take them too often (like 2-3 a day for a few days every month, like I think girls with bad cramps do) they have VERY serious side effects.

Quote:
Each day, 36 million people pop a pill to relieve the pain of headache, arthritis or muscle ache. A study in the November Journal of Rheumatology found that 25% of them take too much, and risk trading pain relief for serious stomach problems.

The medications are a class of drugs called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDS, which include aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve). Many common cold remedies and prescription pain relievers also contain NSAIDs.

All those plastic bottles in medicine cabinets contain warnings and recommended doses, but the study, which surveyed 807 adults, found they're often ignored. Fifty-four percent of the survey participants said they were unaware of gastrointestinal side effects, including ulcers and hemorrhage, and 18% said they had experienced a side effect. Overdosing can happen not only by taking more than the recommended dose but also by taking the next dose sooner than directed, taking more than the recommended number of doses in a day, or unknowingly taking several drugs that all contain NSAIDs.

So if you have bad cramps, if at all possible find an alternative to pain killers.

I like to drink tea (darjeeling chai from India) or have a spoon of honey and a swig of brandy. (A family cure-all for everything XD!)

I also have an electric heating pad, which is lovely. I put it on my lower abdomen and it's just so nice.

Also, doing non-stressful stuff or stress-relieving activities really helps me. I'll burn candles from Chinatown and look at art books while listening to classical music, and it just takes me to another dimension. A dimension without cramps XD

Ive been getting my period since i was 9 and the pain has always been really bad so yea im always trying to find a cure for it.

I find the gentle rocking to work but for the times that it doesnt along with the prescription painkillers that the doc prescribed for it that the simplest things do help...

Like listening to music or breathing really deep with my eyes closed to clear my mind of the pain or just smelling my favorite scent whether its food perfume or fresh air...

And when that all fails....Lie on the couch in sweats with a nice comfy pillow and blanket and just veg until it feels better.

For me, I lie on my back on my bed, completely straight, and rest my arms above me, so I'm making one big kinda, pencil shape. I just lie like that for about 10 mins and then the pain starts to subside.

I curl up on my couch or bed with a heating pad in between me. And I take Advil.

EDIT: They also have a heating pad in the nurses office at school and I usually see lots of girls in there using it. It's very nice. heart

Freedom Fire
I have the worst cramps! I take Aleve, which seems to work better than Midol and Ibuprofen (other meds I've tried), and I curl up with a heating pad, and the pain is still excriciating! I mean, those methods do make a difference, but they're not enough. I hate my period . . .

I'm very much like you, cramp wise. I take Advil Liquid Gels, for migraines, they work the best for my cramps and a hot water bottle and wear my Pj's (can't wear constricting jeans when you have cramps!!), but the cramps are still so bad >.< There are certain times (most of the time) where all I wanna do is curl up, cry my eyes out and then die.... I hate my period too stare

Although it sounds HORRIBLE, I hear just exercising helps. Like walking, running, whatever. Though most of the time I'm too busy wanting to cry. Hehe.

Some form of exercise works for me. Especially, well, sex. Dunno why, its just works.

I also take Motrin or drink a pop/soda, with caffeine. Works for me, but it may not for someone else.

Pickles help! I have no idea why but it works for my mom and me. If you don't like pickles, bananas are the magical cramp reducers. heart

I have to take painkillers for the first 2 - 3 days because they're usually so bad that I'm in almost constant pain without anything in my system. Work helps sometimes, to keep my blood pumping and it serves as a distraction, but I'm not working anymore right now so that won't work.

The last few months, I've had to take Advil Liquigels (Tylenol doesn't work anymore for me) and use my little heart heating pad thing. If I can, I try to take a nap and that usually takes the edge off. Sleeping on my stomach is best, but sometimes even that doesn't help.

I used to get cramps that were so bad, the doc likened it to contractions. I never threw up, but the cramps always caught me off guard and my mom had to pick me up from school cuz I could barely move.
Birth control helped, but I couldn't remember to take it at the same time every day. I was eventually put on some major special pain meds, but I can't remember what they're called at the moment.

The cramps aren't as bad now, but what I've found helps is to take pain meds as soon as I think my cramps are going to start. Tea is also good. I don't know that it actually stops the pain, but Tension Tamer is quite good and the chamomile in it helps to relax me, which also happens to ease the cramps. Actually, anything with chamomile is good cuz that's the stuff that makes you sleepy. If anything, it'll help you sleep through the pain.

sorry for the ramble xd

When I was in high school I would look forward to taking gym during my period, it helped out with cramps so much~ now I use Advil and a heating pad.
