I'm sure a lot of other theatres do this tradition. Our tri-school theatre does the Gypsy Robe tradition.. where a robe covered in small memorabilias from every past musical is sewn onto the robe.. and every year it is passed down to a member of the CHORUS/ENSAMBLE (not a lead) who has shown much spirit and a good attitude during rehearsals. The person it is passed down to has to add memorabilias from that show onto the robe.

As for stuff BEFORE a show.. I know the actors usually play this game called 'Jigalo' where everyone stands in a circle and sing 'Jigalo Ji-jigalo Jigalo Ji-jigalo' and one person calls a single person to do some kind of dance move with this: (example)
Rob: Hey.. *picks random person* Tina!
Tina: Yeah Rob?
Rob: Do you know how to jig?!
Tina: Jiga-what?!
Rob: jigalo!
Tina: well... *sings* My hands are high, my feet are low, and this is how I jigalo *does dance move to song*
EVERYONE: *copies dance move while singing* My hands are high, my feet are low, and this is how she jigalo! ...Jigalo Ji-jigalo Jigalo Ji-jigalo
Tina: hey.. *picks random peson* Bobby!
Bobby: yeah Tina?!
...then rinse and repeat, until a good number of people have gone xd

Ahhh!!!! We do the Jigalo, too! Just not before shows, on ocasion in rehearsal or club meetings. Did you guys get that from Thespian conference?

Robe idea's interesting. smile I'm glad it's always to an ensamble person and not a lead. If not, all the leads would probably do it.

We do a few things . . . We stand outside back stage right, and do an excersize thing (not sure how to explain it, it's like you shake each limb 10 times, then 9, then 8, until you get down to 1, and fall over). Then our director tells us some stuff, someone says a prayer, and then we do out little sports thing (you know, hands in, chanting). Yeah . . .

We always do the ol "Break a leg" thing before someone has to go perform and we're all backstage cheering them on silently. It's a real connection you have sometimes with the people. Even if you hate eachother, the show usually brings people together and on the last performance you feel as though something is being taken away from you..it sucks. That's the bad thing about performing. You get attached everyone. Last year, some of the audience members took me and a couple of other performers out to eat afterwards...it was around 10:30-11:00pm. I hope I get a small lead role or something this year...

Before every show I did in highschool my director gave the same speech. Its tradition that he give this speech and we all chant back before every show. There wasn't one actor in the show who wasn't on the edge of thier seat waiting back stage for his speech on opening night. Another thing that was a tradition in my highschool theatre department was includuing this wooden duck we have in the set of every show. It sat on a table or hung in a tree or pirched on a piano. It was always there somewhere in every set. I guess it was kinda good luck.

Before each show at my former school we had what we called Energy Check. We'd all stand in a circle and get ourselves psyched up for the show and focus our concentration. It started off with tongue twisters and enunciation excercises and stuff, and we'd play a couple games. Fun stuff. And teamwork stuff. Like the pulse. Twas great fun, and a huge tradition. It's always lead by 2 seniors who have the Energy check book, and it's always passed down at the end of the year.
That's kind of what we do, we get in a circle, and meditate/pray, and then we all say an individual sort of "Break a leg." And we do exercises like "It was a dark and stormy night, and I was standing on the deck, of a swiftly sinking ship, and the Captain turned to me and said, it was a dark and stormy night..." and so on.

Before a show, just before everybody has to get dresed or check cues... we all stand in the middle of the stage and play Ninja Tag. Its where every body ( all of the cool kids!) stands in a circle and try to pull people down with out moving your feet.

then after the show when the audience leaves we have a " Techie Curtin call". its where all of the techs stand on stage and the cast chears for them. The techs do what ever they want while the cast is ' going wild' for them. its actually nice since its the actors who get the claps when we put the show on........

We have many traditions, but one is right before we go on, the curtian is closed and the asudiebnce is waiting, everyone gets in a giant circle and closes their eyes, and they to the "pass the hand squeese" thing, we like to call it" creative energy" anyway in a ggroup of about 50 we have gotten it down to 2.54 seconds...beat that!

We all get in a circle and stand just outside the lower entrance to the theatre and shout break a leg as loud as we can and occasionally we will all pray to Ophelia our theatre ghost that nothing will go wrong.

Every show, we play "Hide A Techie". One of the techies will hide some where on the set. During blackouts, they move. It's kind of amusing.

We, as in the techies, like to hide the tools from the newbies if they leave them lying around. Then we make them find them. It's quite amusing.

Oh, and we have tech shirts.
They're plain coloured with handprints groping the chest,
The back either says "Techies: We're good with our hands." or "Techies do it in the dark."
Our (old) director HATED them.

We do the gypsy rope as well, except it's open to all the actors. We also do a tech vest, same concept but a black vest and everything is one the inside so, I assume, you could wear it during a show. No one does, though. They always go hang it up so it doesn't get dirty. biggrin

We have traditions before and after the show. Before, we all do a different vocal warm-up, and nothing much else. After the show is where the fun really starts. We all sing "Living on a prayer - Bon Jovi. The last night, after the show, it is tradition to sing The Flinstones Themetune. Dont ask me why, but personally....its what everyone waits for. Everything described in this post, is always for the male cast members only. The female members have their own songs !!

Yes, for the 5 years I have been in theatre, we have always had the same traditions. On the show that is on the middle night, we sing Livin' On A Prayer by Bon Jovi. (Oh, this is only the boys). Just after the final show, the guys all sing The Flintstones Themesong, and the girls sing "I will survive."
