Totoro is an aquired taste...I've noticed that it marks as a love-it/hate-it amongst fans. Same as Pom Poko; while it's definately an awesome movie, it just doesn't register with some people since it has a really high WTF? factor...especially in the character design...

But seriously, see The Cat Returns. Baron is pure bad-assery in the vein of James Bond meets Sherlock Holmes meets Indiana Jones meets The Dread Pirate Roberts. Plus Muta is a laugh a minute.

I second this opinion. The Cat Baron is made of win and awesome.

And Muta's great too. He reminds me of my late first cat, but even fatter. And with less tail.

I loved Pom poko
but the ending was retarded
I was liek what the ******** they didn't even accomplish anything
the best part was of course. 'do you know what the mat you are sitting on is made of?'

I LOL'd hard at that point...especially since they didn't even freak out or anything. It was like 'Oh, is that so? How impressive' all calm like. ^^;

Still, the futility of the ending was kind of the point. Miyazaki has a habit of putting firm (and by firm, I mean, slamming your face into it like a sledgehammer) social and ecological messages into his movies. While Pom Poko was told with the whimsical Tanukis as the protaganists, it's easy to see the comparison to the Japanese people themselves and how the generations have taken them from their own traditions and into a modern business world.

Miyazaki seems to have a pretty poor opinion of the changing times. I personally love one clip I saw of him (I think it's on the Spirited Away or Howl's Moving Castle special features) where he was speaking with a group of his fellow workers while making Spirited Away. He was describing Haku the Dragon's movements with comparisons like 'a snake falling out of a tree' or 'feeding a pill to a dog'. When none of the younger co-workers had any idea what he was talking about, he practically face-palmed and called them hopeless. ^_^ It was a hoot.

Oh, I saw that. XD

He asked "What, none of you had dogs growing up?" and maybe one man raised his hand. Miyazaki had to take the animation team to a veterinary hospital or something to show them what happens when you force a pill down a dog's throat.

(It's really much easier to just stick the thing in a piece of sausage or cheese and let them eat it...)

Cat Returns and Spirited Away were my favs, closely followed by Kiki's. Something just seems a bit rushed about Howl's Moving Castle (Though it is a close third!)

surprised well the point was to make Haku look ike he doesn't want the pill

X3 so giving a dog something he really does want is not what they're after

Oh, I know. I just think it's funny how dogs will eat anything if it's lodged in a piece of something delicious.

My kitten won't eat just anything, but she will eat some table scraps. She really likes pot roast. I kept cutting off tiny pieces, and putting them on top of her scratching post. She'd stand up, grab the piece, and eat it. Then I tried doing that with a piece of carrot; she doesn't like carrots. I gave her enough pieces that if I just put my hand on top of the scratching post, she'd climb up expecting something to eat.

She's only allowed to eat things we feed her. Sometimes she'll jump up on the counter or table and try to get at your food or stick her muzzle in your drinking glass. Once she licked an empty ice-cream bowl mostly clean while I was out of the room; I'm surprised she didn't get sick.

...Castle in the Sky is one of my favorite movies I have, period.
(Mark Hamill is a pretty good voice actor.)

oh yeah
we saw that
and haku totally was like a snake falling out of a tree
I got the whole thing at the end of pom poko but it was just kinda anticlimactic in a way
it was still great though
I 'specially loved when the raccoon expanded his testacles in front of a truck and it crashed. xD

I've only seen Kiki's Delivery Service and Spirited Away (both of which I liked very much).
