Just keep after them. Yell at ease if it gets to bad. Do one on one counselling with the cadets. Use merits and demerits with real rewards and punishments. One thing my XO and I are trying now is taking away the tables. Our cadets have a bad habit of slouching and leaning the head on their hands... without tables they can't do that, and it restricts note passing. Our cadets know if they talk during class it will adversely affect their promotions. Also, just saying their name and giving them the look helps once the bulk of the noise has been dealt with.

I dont know if im considered a jackass but i know i keep them boys in line if needed, for example if a cadet is yelling at his girlfriend or any other girl for that matter i will drop him where he stands. and yell as loud as i can to keep him in order

... you like to drop people a lot... is that really appropriate in the uniform of our armed forces... same with yelling as loud as you can

Sgt. threatened to shut our unit down because the seniors didn't respect the freshman. Seniors were giving orders to freshman left and right, and it caused ugly disputes.

I am sorry but push ups should be used as a last resort only and so should yelling. You don't achieve anything but negative effects. When you yell at someone..its demoralizing and embarassing and all you do is get them upset. Use postive encouragement, or another means to correct problems. Using a calm but firm voice works wonders, and if you must drop someone..drop with them. Remember you were there once, even if you never did anything bad (Bull..we all have) and remember what it felt like.

I got lucky the last two years of my JROTC career and had a Navy Capt. and a Marine 1stSGT.....noone was gonna mess around with anyone. Also the staff was awesome (I was on the staff the second year but not the first). We did not have many problems with discipline because from the begining all cadets are made feel welcome and know that they are not just the "new kids" but instantly they know that they are a part of something more.....My unit was kind of a family....especially the drill team.....of course haveing a small unit might have had some effect in this though lol

I agree....one of the things i learned from my unit (be it Leadership Academy or our Mini Boot Camps at Camp Pendleton) it is that if you must punish a single person do it in private...they only time that i yelled was if a big group of my cadets were acting up.........unfortunately though my SNSI ans NSI didn't allow the officers or high ranked Chiefs to enforce push-ups....so we didnt have a problem with that lol

Our regular Instructor is kinda strict and we get things done with him, but our senior instructor isn't strict at all. He will say something, an example is that we are allowed to eat lunch in the unit if there isn't a class going on at that time and he will say that we aren't allowed to eat in there for say, 2 months, and then the next day, he will say that we can again. This was his first year teaching high school, but he didn't follow up on any of the ultimatums and he wanted to be everyone's friend and it isn't working.

Our commanders aren't really strict, so most of the younger cadets act up a lot. Anyway, we dont have many people so htey can't kick anyone out. This breeds a lot of annoyances.

My instructors are so lax, we've got kids literally throwing s**t in the middle of class. Pissed me off when I was calling cadence and the fat s**t in the back of the flight was throwing rocks at the back of my head. If Sarge hadn't been watching, I would've killed him. Colonel is such a d**k it ain't even funny. He only cares about himself and his six-figure salary. Our group commander from last year actually beat the s**t out of an AS-I cadet because he was so annoying. Luckily it was off of school property and nobody found out except those of us he told.

its simple..
if they talk too loud give them a warning
if they talk again make them assume the front lean and rest position

Yea, my unit has a problem with extra chit chat. Even if an upperclassmen yells "AIR OFF!" Everyone just cracks up laughing and shouts "Air Off" to each other. We have strict instructors but there's only so much you can do.

Pushups, pushups, pushups.

Or just keep 'em in the front lean and rest for a good 5 minutes for starters, then have them do a few.

If you're outside and getting ready to march or something, just stand at attention and make them do so till they go quiet. Or you could always leave them at dress right, dress. I've done that.

@someone who mentioned PT: I was told it's against the law to make JROTC students do PT punishments >>;

Let me say this...

I was a Cadet Major at Clear Brook High School. In 2004, we won Honor Unit With Distinction, and was the 2nd highest ranking JROTC in the country, just behind New York by 3 points. I was a private then.

My unit? Serious?? Never. But we had a good time. Some advice to you commanders and future leaders...don't be serious. And here's why.

A JROTC cadet is just that...a high school cadet. No military commitment, no actual military training is going on. Piss off the cadet, he leaves, and you can only do that so many times before you have one hell of a small brigade. Rather than yell and be strict, INSPIRE your cadets to follow you.

I often time bribed my units with a reward. Either we'd skip drill and play football, or we'd have a pizza party. But ONLY if they did superb today on drill.

Positive reinforcement breeds a positive cadet, and you want a cadet who follows you because he wants to, not because he has to. Have fun with your cadets, be their mentor, their teacher, their guide, not their boss.

So while yes, my unit had a problem with being serious MOST of the time, they were able to get it together when it really counted.
