Rivener barely spared a glance for the doctor, until the man began squeezing at his stinger-wings. He then darted a cold glare at the man, but let him go about his business. Once Tsu was done, Riv flexed his wings, the needle-tips feeling tender. He turned his attention to the other Raevan and smiled, trying to forget the unpleasantness. "I think swimming will be fun! And, we don't have to worry about drowning since we can just float out of the water." He thought a little to himself before continuing. "I suppose there are other things to do at the beach that I've never done... seeing as I've never been there. Maybe we can build a sandcastle, and look for seashells that have the seasounds inside?" Riv hopped off the exam table and smoothed out his ribbons.
"Where did the others go?" Riv asked.
Aphismet had followed quietly, and listened to Dr Tsu's words carefully. He kept his gaze on his shoes. A puzzled and shameful frown played on his features. "That's the thing, I've never met this Dr Kyou. I honestly don't think I'm a very good guardian. Everyone I've ever met pretty much tells me that I need more confidence, but I c-can't help being the way I... *sigh*... I'll do as you s-say. I'll try to tr-trust Rivener more. He... He just scares me. He's poisoned me before, and he has poisoned innocent bystanders simply to get to me... I-I don't know how to act around him."
The man rubbed the back of his neck and shook his head. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't be burdening you with my em-emotional issues." He smiled sheepishly. "Forget I said anything. Let's go to that beach, the Raevans seem quite ready to go. ...It's strange, I don't think Rivener has ever behaved so decently with another Frei."

"I'm sure they'll be back in just a second. Tsu usually has to go wash his hands after the examination. You know what? I've actually never tried building a sand castle or finding one of those shells that sound like the sea before. You really make the ocean seem interesting again." Zave mused with the hint of a soft smile. It was definitely worth the effort getting to know Rivener, he was clever and also had a fresh set of eyes on things.
"Maybe people keep telling you to have more confidence because you constantly act like you doubt yourself. Even if you haven't met Kyou yet, you've met both Chloe and myself. Not to mention a lot of the other owners. If you weren't cut out to be amongst the ranks... I probably would have mentioned something about shaping up. Instead I'm trying to tell you not to worry and keep on going. I know trusting Rivener is hard when he uses his powers like that. Voice your concerns and give reasons why you're concerned. Listen to him as well. That's what being a family is after all, right? Also... I told you Zavier in there has the ability to handle himself. I never told you his parts though, right? He's the soul of a very powerful steed - Sleipnir actually - and the essence of an eye of the storm. If he doesn't want something, he doesn't have to stand for it. Yet he controls it as well... something that took work with him."
"Sorry to keep you waiting. I was just washing up after finishing the examination. You're the picture of health Rivener. I found nothing wrong at all... but that's come to be expected. You seem more than ready to take care of yourself. I'd like you to come back at some point to get an idea of what's on your mind... but I think we've put off going to the beach long enough. Shall we head out now?"

Rivener was startled to hear that Zavier had never built a sandcastle. That was, like what, one of the top three things to do at the beach! Riv blinked at his friend and asked in a puzzled tone: "Well, what HAVE you been doing at the beach, just floating around?" The Frei was then interrupted by the good doctor, and was forced to listen. He smiled as Tsu told him he was perfectly well; he mistook it for a compliment. The other statement was a little more out of the ordinary. Rivener frowned.
"Why would you need to know what's on my mind?" Rivener asked, although he was more interested in going to the shore than knowing the answer, right now. He was already floating towards the door.
Aphismet nodded to everything Tsu said. Of course Aph knew he needed to work on his self-confidence, but that was always easier said than done. "What's Sleipnir?" Aph asked, never having learned the intricacies of such mythology. "And he doesn't look very, erm, stormy... You seem to have taught him very well already. I-I admire that." The man smiled and followed, hoping that Tsu's advice would help him get to know Rivener better.

"It's mostly my feeding grounds!" Zavier huffed defensively. "Not to mention the amazing blueness of the ocean, I just wanted to share that with someone..." He blushed a little noting how it sounded sorta like something you would confide in a close friend or lover first before someone you just met. Then he silently cursed himself hoping that no one caught on to what was shooting through his head.
Eager for the conversation change Zave piped up once more "What I think Tsu means is he wants to know more about your interests and certain things that pertain to you. He wants to make sure that you're happy in your situation. After all it's a complete package, a healthy body without a mind that is challenged and interested isn't as exciting to be around, don't you agree?"
"Hahahah... taught? I wish." Tsu laughed a little bitterly at the whole notion of being able to tame Zavier, much less teach him. "I learn more from these kids than the other way around honestly. Parenthood was never really in my plans before. Zavier controls his powers more because of a pact than anything. Sometimes I thank the invention of the pinky swear." The whole promise had been that Tsu would 1. pay more attention to the kids and 2. ease up on the amount of smoke he produced. If the conditions were broken, then Zave would let all hell break loose once more. So it was really a do or die situation.
"Interestingly enough, most raevans don't look like the material they were created from. That has more to do with the soul that was absorbed into their bottle. The scorpion aspect of cuddles probably led to his wings and the abilities he inherited. With Zavier, Sleipnir - or Odin's legendary steed - is a horse and so the hair is much like a mane. His abilities to act like a taser gun and feed off storms and air are what comes from the fel essence in this case. You remember Lazarus' explosion of fire when Rivener got too close? Well... that was his undying flame essence coming into effect. His looks come from the incubi soul." Tsu prattled on. Realizing a little late he was probably on a rather dull topic choice. "But that's probably a lot of boring talk for now. Do you have specific questions you'd like to ask?"

"I don't find that boring at all! I'd really like to know what a-all the Raevans are made from, it's interesting to, em, to see what parts of them look like what... L-Like Roux, he's some kind of ice thing, right? And Vyn is a flower? And Gage... Well, I don't know what he is." Aph wondered out loud. The green one didn't look like anything Aph knew about...
"As for questions, I, uh, I can't think of anything in particular right now. I-I mean, well, maybe you can answer this: I-If Rivener is made from Cuddles, how come he doesn't seem to like me? Cuddles always liked me a lot, especially for a scorpion... I was able to pet him and he wouldn't even try to sting me. But Rivener..." Aph let it hang, darting a sideways glance to his Frei.
Rivener's lips drew into a knowing smile. Having watched so many television shows, Rivener was an expert at reading people's emotions. He was easily able to tell that Zave had thought of something that made him a little uncomfortable, and taking the context into consideration, Rivener assumed that the other had thought something along the lines of "Homigod I can't believe I just said something so intimate to this person I just met."
Love at First Sight, perhaps?
Rivener had to play it cool for now, let the other become so attracted they could barely stand it. That's normally what the script continued on into. He'd have to act like he hadn't noticed, also. Rivener so enjoyed acting! He put on his friendly face again, not hard to do when he actually liked the other, but harder now that he knew there might be feelings involved.
"Feeding grounds? What do you feed on, the sea?" Rivener gave the other a look, seeing lots of blue... perhaps Zave was made of some kind of ocean essence? "And I'd like to talk to Tsu about my mind-things. No one ever asks me how I feel about things, or what I like." He frowned slightly. "Aphismet pays more attention to his job and his painting than he does to me. Do you know how that feels? You must, since your guardian has to pay attention to all these other things, too."

"Before I continue answering this question, understand that I am not criticizing you in any way, I might not mince the words - but it's because you should know what you're in the middle of." Tsu turned to Aphismet seriously. He didn't want misunderstandings, and since current partner had a habit of taking things personally, he didn't want an emotional mess.
"The reason Rivener is not like Cuddles in the aspect of letting you pet him and what not is that you still haven't reached the depths of this experiment. Cuddles was a pet and an important being to you I assume. Else you wouldn't have chosen that soul to bring in. When we create a raevan, or when Kyou does rather, a lot of the experiences the soul had are buried deep within. You have a clean slate that means, no love, no hate, nothing. In the same time imagine how confused Cuddles must be, it's not like he came to you asking for the process to happen. He might be as scared as you are. The trick is to work together through it. As time passes he might grow to understand and trust you more. There is no easy answer or instant formula to make him love you like Cuddles did I'm afraid. Just as Cuddles probably didn't warm up to you from the beginning I imagine."
Zavier looked at the other raevan with a curious glance and yet gave a mysterious smile back. "Do I really look like someone that would just feed on something as simple as the ocean?" Since the first part of the morning there were a lot more clouds gathering and the wind was picking up as they got closer to the beach. "Well in a way it's a combination of the sea and the air. The squalls sometimes make a perfect meal to be honest." Zave admitted with a hungry look in his eyes. It was still warm enough out that none of the raevans would be cold, but a storm would be coming soon and Zave would be there to meet it.
Focusing once again on the conversation, Zave's eyes seemed to brighten a little again. "It's understandable you want Aphismet to focus on you as well. Sometimes I get frustrated with Kai over there because it feels like there's a competition between us for attention. Tsu tries to make sure that we each have our needs met and aren't bored, but I wish he was there more sometimes. He has promised that soon he'll do something with just me. It's something to look forward to."

"Well, at least you have a reason why he might not be paying attention to you; there's all these others. Aphismet doesn't have such an excuse, there's just me." Rivener almost pouted. "Pah! Let's not talk about unpleasant things. Let's go build that sandcastle!" Rivener floated towards the door hurriedly, waiting for Zave to follow and open the door, leading the way to the seashore.
Aphismet sighed. Of course, that was just the problem; he hadn't CHOSEN Cuddles for anything, it had been a mistake... He didn't want to bring that up, however. He'd sound like a broken record. Aph just smiled. "S-so things might... might change? Later in the erm, experiment? I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm going to try really hard and do my best to be a good guardian, b-but... Cuddles might still be in th-there?"

"I don't mean to get your hopes up and then dash them, but I think the part to stress is the word 'experiment'. There is no guarantee that Cuddles will be back like before, just as there is no saying he won't have some of those memories you shared. It's best to treat Rivener as Rivener. Cuddles is Cuddles, and I'm not telling you to forget him, but also please don't forget the one right in front of you." Tsu said kindly, but also a with a little bit of finality in his voice, that maybe the topic should change.
"Sorry," Zavier apologized snapping out of his reverie before going to open the door for the other. "The sandcastle sounds like a lot of fun! Let's hurry down and start working on them. The others will catch up shortly after this." He was eager to go to the beach and enjoy the storm, not to mention build that sand castle.
"Just you? He doesn't have any hobbies or other things that he tries to bury himself in?" Zavier was concerned. He would need to talk to Tsu and let him know what was going on. No raevan should be ignored. It wasn't kind.

Rivener rolled his eyes. "He has work, and then when he comes home he paints. He talks to me once in a while, he doesn't ignore me completely, but most of the time he leaves me alone." And they were back on the same old subject. "Can we PLEASE not talk about Aphismet anymore? It's annoying. Wow!" the Frei exclaimed as he spotted the sea. It was not a sunny day, and so he didn't get the full "sparkling waters" effect that the sea normally offered, but he was still impressed. A storm was brewing, so winds were picking up the waves high, and dashing them on the cliffs to the west. "This is Awesome!" Riv added, grinning. He floated down happily and plopped himself onto the sand, immediately pulling it to him and trying to form it into something like a castle... It mostly just made a big mound.
"Oh," Aph said, following Tsu and the Raevans outside. "Um, right, right, I didn't mean erm... *cough*" Aph really felt like an idiot now. He was always whining about something, wasn't he? This was a fact he was painfully aware of.
Tsu obviously wanted a change of subject, but Aph had absolutely no idea what to talk about. Opening his mouth for a minute before letting out any kind of word, the man must have looked like quite the fool. "Looks stormy," he finally said. "Is it really safe for the Raevans near the waterside? I mean, for yours probably yes, since it's made of the stuff, but erm... I mean, will Riv be okay?"

Zavier looked back down at the sand. He didn't mean to agitate Rivener about these things, it just sort of happened. Still the sand castle provided a great distraction from those problems. "Oh wow! So that's what a sand castle looks like? Where'd you learn to make those kinds of things? From TV?" Sure it looked like a big mound of sand, but add a few decorations and Rivener sure found something interesting.
"Both of them will be fine, Aph." Tsu reaffirmed gently, "Zavier will make sure to watch out for people and raevans he views as friends. He's not the type that would leave another stranded let's just say. Besides, it's not like they can't float out of any terrible situations. Right?"
As if to confirm his comforting words, Zave looked out once again at the breakers of the waves. "Riv, I don't mean to interrupt, but the waves coming in seem to be hitting close to this area. Let's work on our best sandcastle over back there a little more. We can even grab some sea shells on the way to try and listen to... or else maybe even use to make the sandcastle really look amazing once the sun comes out again."
Zavier gestured over to a spot that was a nice mix of sand a ways back towards the town. It was easily out of reach of any of the high tides and would surely mean that there would be no need to fear the other raevan being swept away by one of the violent waves that threatened to come crashing in.

Aph listened to the explanation and had to admit that Tsu was right; Riv could fly, and would be much better at getting himself out of dangerous situations than Aph ever would. The guardian smiled. "Right. He'll be fine. Zavier sure is a nice young man... Err, young Raevan. Very kind. I'm sure he'll keep Riv safe." He didn't add that he thought Rivener was often too self-centered to really notice what was going on around him.
Rivener was tilting his head at the sand mound, analysing what he'd done wrong. He saw sandcastles all the time on TV and they all looked much better than this. Still, even a mound of sand was entertaining. "Yes, I learned about them on TV. There was even a show on the discovery channel once, about a sandbuilding contest. People had made all kinds of things out of sand, not just castles. There were dragons, and statues of people... It was really beautiful."
As Zavier mentioned something about the waves, Rivener finally looked up and saw what the other was talking about. "Hm, I don't think it would be a good idea to go swimming today, after all... Maybe next time." He floated up and away with his new friend, looking at the ground and picking up interesting things to use on the next sandcastle they would build. "I can't see any of the really big ones that have a curlicue... Do you see any? those are the ones we have to have if we want to listen inside them. Ohh, this is a shiny shell! It'll go on top of the biggest tower in the castle." Riv turned over the shell in question, smiling. "Are we far enough to build the castle?" he asked, turning around and glancing at the sea.

Tsu smiled slightly as Aph finally was able to let go of freaking out about every aspect of Rivener. The trick would still be getting him to trust his charge and not be afraid of him. But these things took baby steps.
"Hmmm... I don't really see any of those types of shells, but maybe some will wash up on shore after the storm." Zavier offered his friend, considering a little. He wanted to be a source of helpful information too after all.
Looking at the spot that Rivener had pointed out, Zavier gave a nod of approval after giving the once over. The sand was moist enough that they could pack it down how they wanted, and it was easily out of reach of the incoming waves. However, to be on the safe side, Zavier decided he'd have to get his hands dirty and have some fun with this castle. "This is a great spot Rivener! Nice eye! Let's make a moat first to try and set up an area we can build our castle in. That way the water won't bother our creation either." He said and started digging a boundary to not only keep the water and trespassers in, but also the people he wanted safe and protected in.

Rivener blinked at the moat-building idea. Of course all castles HAD to have a moat! How could he had forgotten that?! With a smirk, Riv floated over to Zave's side and began helping him to dig, using one of the seashells he found as a makeshift trowel. It was surprisingly effective! "You should take a shell too," he offered the other. "It'll go faster!"
Rivener, while he was digging, was already making plans for how he was going to make this new sandcastle better than the last one. "Last time the sand kept falling over, and it's hard to get it to be straight... I think we need help to make the walls more square-looking. We should look for some kind of driftwood or something that we can use to push the sand into place. That ought to make it solid!" Riv nodded.
As they dug their trench, new seashells and bits of oddities were showing up in their wake. When the moat was almost done, Riv and Zave had amassed quite a collection of items to use on the castle. Even a few tiny, sea-buffed pieces of broken glass! This would be a colorful castle indeed, Rivener thought with a smile.

Zavier mused at the idea of using a shell to dig more quickly. It would be nice not to have to dirty up his hands too much. The sand starts to irritate if moved in the wrong way and that was never fun. "Thank you. I'll do that." Picking up the proffered shell, Zave began to dig with a new ease into the sand and scoop out faster. He looked at the other Raevan and grinned, "This IS a lot easier! That was a great idea."
Listening to Rivener's ideas for the castle brought more suggestions from Zave as he watched the sand from which they were digging. "Maybe we could use this sand that's slightly wet a little more? It seems to clump together easier, so forming things wouldn't be as much of a hassle. The softer sand could be used later just for decoration?"
Zave stared in wonder at the sea glass that was dug up along with the shells. The colors caught his eye and he knew their decorations on this project would be amazing in the sun. He just hoped that it wouldn't be destroyed in the storm before they could see it.

Rivener considered Zave's suggestion as he piled the glass bits off to the side. A quick glance down revealed the moat they had built, and the wetter sand they'd revealed under the first layer... It was more like mud. He smiled.
"You're right! It'll work much better, I'll bet! Let's dig some up and start the castle."
Taking his seashell, Rivener started digging a hole after he'd patted down a nice section of sand for them to build on. Soon, a treasure trove of moist sand was ready to use as building blocks for their castle.
"What shape should it be? I don't want to make a boring square... How about an "H" pattern? Or a "O"? Or maybe even a "Y"! What do you think?" Rivener was really getting into this. He was grinning widely as he pushed sand onto the building space, getting ready to form the basis of their art.
