Rivener sighed and rolled his eyes once again, floating dejectedly behind Aphi. The Raevan really didn't see what the purpose of this visit was; there was nothing wrong with him. He didn't feel ill, his skin wasn't any warmer or colder than it should be, his color was alright... What was this visit FOR? But Aphismet had insisted, (albeit fearfully) and Riv had agreed, on the off chance that he might see Lazzie or someone else from the lab.
"I hope this won't be too unpleasant," Rivener growled, obviously implying that if it WAS, Aph would feel unpleasantness of his own come evening.
"It should be fine," Aphismet replied a tad too quickly, gulping to himself.
He just knew that he was supposed to take his charge in to Dr Tsu a few times a year to monitor his growth, and make sure nothing was amiss... But after a few months of living with the poisonous scorpion, constantly wondering if his morning coffee would be laced with something, Aph just wanted to find out if this kind of power was normal. Someone out there must have the answer! If not Dr Tsu, then maybe he can get referred to some kind of expert? If there is such a thing, that is... Aph was, once again, severely regretting having accepted to keep Rivener. He missed Cuddles.
"Here we are," Aphismet declared with a sigh of relief before opening the door for Rivener. "This shouldn't take very long."
"You'll be in there with me?"
"Err, if you want me to, I guess..."
"Yes. You come with me."
Aphismet was a bit startled to hear Rivener ask for his company during the tests. Didn't Riv hate Aphi? Or at least, dislike? ...Maybe there was a bit of Cuddles in there after all?

It was supposed a quiet day in the office. Tsu had wanted to spend time with his kids for a bit and decided to close most appointments for the afternoon. Granted it seemed that nothing in his life went according to plan as of late. That much was clear as Aphismet and his charge had walked into the office unannounced. Never a really welcome thing since the drama Rivener had caused the last time he was in the office. Luckily Lazarus was nowhere to be seen... but Zave was floating around looking at various pictures while waiting for Tsu to finish up a couple papers.
"Aphismet and Rivener!! Well... this is quite a surprise..." Tsu piped up. That wasn't half the feelings running through Tsu's head. After all... he hadn't been warned by Chloe or anyone else that there was someone waiting for him. "What can I do for the two of you today?
Just around that time Zave came floating in from the room next door with Kai in tow. "When did we get guests? I thought you were going to take us out...?"
"Ah, Zavier, Kai; I'd like you to meet Aphismet and Rivener. Rivener was born before you Zave. After we take care of their questions, we can go out to the beach."
"Okay... It's nice to meet someone else that's similar to me. Rivener was it? How are you today?"

Rivener and Aphismet both blinked at Zave's entrance. Honestly, there seemed to be many more Raevans around than expected.
Rivener's startled expression slowly melted into the sultry smile he usually wore, and he floated slightly forward, giving this Zave character a once-over. He pointedly ignored Kai. "Hello," the Raevan offered in his honeyed voice. "I'm Rivener, yes. And you are Zavier, the doctor called you, right? It's Very nice to meet you." Rivener was slowly, sneakily inching forward as he spoke, trying to get closer. This one was beautiful, as most Raevans. It seemed rare that a Raevan wouldn't be gorgeous, a fact that made Rivener very happy indeed.
Aphismet frowned to himself and quickly snuck sideways towards Dr Tsu while Rivener concentrated his efforts on this new playmate. Hopefully Riv wouldn't do something stupid like he always did with Roux.
"Dr Tsu, I'm sorry to drop in unannounced, but I really can't take it anymore!" Of course, Aph was whispering as quietly as he could, at least thankful that Zavier provided a perfect distraction during which he could explain his situation to the doctor. "Rivener is DANGEROUS. He can poison things with those wing-tip stingers! AND he's not scared of doing it, either. He can make a lot of different poisons at will, too! And, and, he's already interested... You know, interested in people, well, erm, (cough)boys(coughcough)... Is this normal? Is, is he supposed to be able to do that? Isn't he supposed to be more like a kid, be more manageable, sleep a lot, things like that?" A slight tone of panic was seeping into Aph's whispers near the end.

"I'm glad to hear that, Rivener. Call me Zave please..." Zave smiled a little awkwardly while backing away a little cautiously. "Well... you certainly are friendly aren't you. I'd like to know you a little more before you get too close." It was true... the new darker frei interested Zave a little... but at the same time he felt a little uncomfortable again. Maybe if he got to know the other raevan... they could be on friendly terms.
"I understand your concern about the growth of your raevan. It is actually quite surprising that he should be showing such a state of growth already. Most of the raevans have been exploring and meeting others long before they start to exhibit powers such as the ability to poison others. The interest in boys? Perhaps one thing is the levels of testosterone or the powers of his rune. We will run some tests on him in order to see what we can do to make him more manageable." Tsu begins to console the rather distraught owner, "One thing I recommend to you is that you encourage him experiencing new things and being active with him. Finally having my kids start growing and showing signs of conscious thought, I've learned that they tend to act out towards me if I'm not there to explain contexts of what they see on tv... or if I just keep away. I understand the uncertainty, but you will be a fine parent Aphismet. Just have some trust in yourself and your child."

Rivener slowed to a standstill, now that the other had begun to back away. He now knew where "the line" was. Still with that mellow smile, Rivener tilted his head slightly and nodded. "I see. Well, I'd be more than happy to know you. What would you like to ask?"
Riv examined Zave from head to toe. White hair, kinda like Roux's... Fluffy wings, feathery armsleeves... His eyes in particular held an interesting quality. Rivener's smile widened. He would definately like to be friends with that one.
Aphismet blinked and looked at Dr Tsu. Was this the same guy he'd met when Rivener was born? This version of the doctor seemed more responsible and mature! How strange!
For a moment the doc's words didn't sink in for the shock, but soon enough Aphismet shook himself out of stupor and said:
"Oh, um, experiencing new things, check. We go out lots... but, well, it's just to my workplace. I'm not a really a-active person..." He looked down sheepishly, "I have been leaving him in front of the, erm, the TV more than I should I guess... but I thought it was good, that's where he learned how to talk so quickly." He rubbed his head with a hand, looking back at his charge. "What kinda tests do you think you can do to Make Him Manageable? Oh, n-not that I'm trying to find an easy way out!"
Aph backtracked as best he could, chuckling uneasily. "I, I will spend more time with him.... it's just that, em... he kinda scares me."

Kai was a little indignant that he should be brushed off like that so easily... but well... it was someone like Zave so he decided to let it pass and would sit by passively. That was... unless the other like Zave was a jerk.
Zave was befuddled to say the least about Rivener backing off so willingly. Was Lazarus wrong in his vehement rantings that Rivener couldn't be trusted? Zave decided not to fret too much about it. "Well actually... I'd like to know about you, if that's not too forward?" Zavier asked, fixing Rivener a look with his eyes that were trying to probe for answers. "Sort of like, what hobbies do you have? How do you pass the time? Those questions first." Zave flushed a little at not being as eloquent as he really wanted to be.
Zave felt Rivener's eyes looking him up and down, and he understood the uncomfortable feeling Lazarus explained. It was best to be guarded around this Raevan, just as it was always best to keep a little guard up around Tsu. Although without much warning, Zave held out a hand and pressed it against Rivener's to examine. Looking was one way to gain knowledge, but Zave had always been to gather more information through small touches. Besides, he had been the one to draw the line. As long as it wasn't too close, touching was fine.
Tsu wasn't too shocked by Zavier's touching... being on the receiving end of it himself... but he understood the inopportune time for that as Aphismet just had mouthed concerns about that sort of contact a little bit earlier. "Oh... don't be thrown off by Zavier touching Rivener. He just learns more about people that way. He knows his limits." Tsu finished the explanation hoping that Aphismet would be satisfied with it. Last thing he needed was an owner huffing out of his office.
"Don't get me wrong by the way," Tsu backtracked trying to bolster the owner with confidence "You are doing a nice job raising Rivener, even if he acts out towards you. I mean letting him watch television is a great way for him to learn vocabulary and often times interactions... but I'd like if you watched with him in case he has questions. Even if it's to explain why we shouldn't be feeding others toxins. Even walking with him outside in a place other than your job from time to time might be a good change of pace for both of you. Sometimes you need to get away from work and the stress it causes, don't you? Tsu concluded.
"Right now, about all I can do is run a general physical on him to make sure that there are no immediate problems to his growth and health, but I'll also try to take a sample of his toxins and see if there is anything about him that can control hormones and the poisoning streak. He does have the powers of Cuddles, that much is certain... and I'm sure deep down he still has some of the memories of his previous life... but what's important is that you do treat him like a member of your family still. I know he can seem frightening... and if it really sets you on edge... feel free to meet with me even out of the office. Zave and he can talk and play until you get used to spending time with Rivener."

Aph could just look at Tsu stupidly. He had not been expecting this kind of, well, helpful advice. The first few times he'd met the Doctor, he'd been inattentive, seemingly annoyed. He'd given Aph the impression that he wanted only for the guardian and his Raevan to leave so he could have some peace. This person talking to him now was a completely different man. It was hard to wrap his mind around it.
"Err, well, for the TV listening, I er. Isn't it too late for that? I mean, he's all used to it on his own now and I don't watch the same shows as... Oh, nevermind. I'll watch." Aph's gaze kept darting over to Rivener, and the precarious situation with Zave. "As for work-related stress... MY job is not a hard one, I just make pizzas. No stress there... B-but I do see what you mean. I should take him out more. Erm, are you SURE you want to let Zave do that? I mean, I know you said that's how Zave learns about people and all, but I'm just worried about how Rivener might react to the touching..."
Rivener smiled at the other Raevan, ignoring Kai as though he'd never been in the room in the first place. He tilted his head at the question, trying to think of the answer...
That's when he felt Zave touching his hand. He peered down at the skin touching his, and he slowly looked up at Zave through his eyelids, a half-smirk on his lips. Suddenly the answer to those questions became less of a priority. "The Line" forgotten, Rivener laced his fingers in with Zave's, and began floating forward slowly, trying to inch closer if the other didn't float away fast enough.
"My hobbies? Don't think I have one. I pass time watching TV. That's about it. What do you do, what are your hobbies?" He asked as a reflex, not really paying attention to what he was saying. Careful study of interactions in television shows had honed his conversation skill so much that he didn't even really have to listen, and he would still make enough sense.
"See? See? There he goes! ...And as for the poison testing, I don't know if he'll be willing to do that. OH GOD, what if he tries to come onto YOU too? He's never done it to a human before, but he's never really had the opportunity... Oh, man..." Aph brought a hand to his head as he watched his charge. What a headache this was.

Looking at the situation unfold, Tsu let out a drawn sigh. Peace was so hard to come by usually. "I'm sure Zavier will handle himself just well. If we force them apart, there might be some bad results. Most anamals don't like the sudden movements... and well since your's has the soul of a scorpion and mine has the soul of a god's horse. If they feel they are threatened... they'll lash out. So that's something to watch out for," he said quoting some of the books he read, trying to find out how souls affected the growth of raevans.
Zavier's eyes flickered at the knowledge that something was going on that was very soon going to be out of his control. He needed to be firm in his ground. "No. Not this." Zave said firmly placing his other hand firmly on Rivener's chest. "I'm just trying to learn more about you. Similar to how you managed to give me the once over earlier. As for hobbies I like just wandering around the apartment complex and going to the beach."
"I'm not going to warn you again. I'd like to be friends first before we move too far." Zave said with fierce eyes that showed he was serious.
"Erm... not the most diplomatic way... but it seems like he's handling it. In any case... we'll try to see what we can do about toxins. The best I can promise is just a general check up for now and chances to meet up more often." Tsu concluded with a weak attempt at a helpful smile.

Aphismet nodded thoughtfully as he listened to Tsu's advice about the animals; it did make sense. Cuddles, sudbued as he usually was, would get very irritated and aggressive if something moved too suddenly in his tank, or if something he was playing with was taken away. Aph had never realized that perhaps Cuddles' soul DID have something to do with Rivener after all, even though Riv wasn't showing Cuddles' nicer side.
"I see," he replied. "Well, let's get him checked up as soon as he gets tired of talking to Zave, then? Or, or should we be reminding him that we need to get to it?"
Aph was gazing uneasily at the Raevans, hoping Riv wouldn't lash out.
Rivener smiled, looking down at the hand on his chest. More contact, he enjoyed it. However, re realized that the other was being quite serious about his request, and not trying to send mixed signals on purpose. He stopped advancing, and in a honey voice he spoke.
"Alright, not this. But your way of finding things out about someone is a little more invasive than my once-over. You should be more careful of who you allow yourself to touch; touching is a very special thing that you should only award to those you like very much." He smiled as he spoke, and removed Zave's hand from his chest, also unlacing his fingers from Zave's and floating back a bit. "I like to be clear about such things: touch means YES to me." The Night Frei reached a finger up to curl around his favorite lock of red-black hair, busying his hands. "You get to wander by yourself in such a large place, you're lucky. I'm confined to a one-room apartment most of the time, and am not allowed out unless it's to follow Aphismet to work." He sneered disdainfully and glanced over at his guardian. "It's very boring and annoying. I wish I would have more room to move. And the beach, I saw that on television. It looks nice. ...What other questions would you have for me to answer?"
Rivener smiled a bit more sincerely than usual, now. He enjoyed this, an actual conversation with someone who could speak. He did like Roux very much, and found him incessantly interesting, but he did wish the Ice Frei could talk more. Zave here was more entertaining to converse with.

"I understand and will try to be more careful about my ways to learn about you." Zave said slowly, "I guess you should just watch out about how you check others out too in a sense or give them a 'once over'. There is a saying 'undressing with the eyes' that comes to mind after all. Anyway, What television shows do you watch?" Zavier was curious since he never really watched television. Tsu and Kai have all these other adventures and activities to keep him occupied rather than floating there watching all the shows. He wanted to know more about this dark raevan... something about him seemed alluring, and Zave was fighting as best he could to keep from crossing lines. "Maybe you can come to the beach with us? I really enjoy the air that blows in from there... a lot fresher than anything in the city. Plus you'd be a bit more free to move around."
Tsu couldn't help but overhear the conversation and the invitation. "Well... you heard my raevan. It might be nice for Rivener to get out a little more, and you don't really have to be active. We can just stay and I'll answer questions you might have if you prefer that. That of course will take place after I do a check up, which we should get around to. Rivener? I'm sorry to interrupt, but would you mind coming over to the table so I can just make sure that your reflexes and everything check out?"

Rivener frowned slightly at being rebuked about his staring. He wasn't really undressing them with his eyes, he was just examining them very closely. After all, this wasn't a television show where he would get hours to look at someone; he had to take them all in at once. He had never realized that it might put people ill at ease. "I'm sorry for looking at you, then. I didn't mean anything by it, I was just examining you."
Riv smiled at the thought of going to the beach. "Do you mean today?" he asked Zave as he turned to Tsu, nodding to show that he was ready for tests. "I'd really like that, I think. Something other than that cramped, dirty apartment."
"Our apartment isn't dirty!" Aphismet squeaked out, outraged and embarrassed. He turned to Tsu, as though Tsu might report him to child services if he thought Rivener's words had any truth. "It's not dirty, it's just a little small and there are the two of us there, and my painting things are crammed into a corner and it makes it LOOK a little dirty maybe, but it's really not! It- it's really... erm, not." He'd run out of steam, and kept his eyes down, blushing in embarassment, rubbing the back of his neck with one hand.
While Aphismet was babbling to Tsu, Rivener had continued speaking to Zave. "I watch all kinds of things; I mostly like shows on Discovery channel, where they talk about science things and building things and nature. I also like CSI a lot, it's very interesting. My favorite things, though, are movies." Riv was happy that someone was actually asking him these things. No one had ever shown so much interest before, apart for Roux (whose attentions were still mostly selfish anyway.). "Do you watch TV at all?"

Zavier sighed slightly at the defensive stance that Rivener took at his mention of undressing with the eyes. He didn't want that kind of reaction at all... usually just overstepped his boundaries because he always felt someone was staring at him. "I'm sorry, that came out wrong. I don't mind you looking at me, I guess I was just a little defensive about my ways to investigate and gain knowledge."
"Yeah, we will head to the beach after this. It would be fun to spend some more time with you, and I'd like to show you one of my favorite places to go." Zave said, trying to get to know Rivener better.
Tsu was trying to comfort Aphismet on the other hand. "It's alright, each owner is a little different and has different circumstances. I'm pretty sure one of the other owners is a kleptomaniac. At least, when I was their age... I never had that much stuff - and name brands to boot. Anyway, I digress, as long as you don't abuse Rivener in any way, I won't do anything to take him away from you."
"I actually don't have much time to watch TV. I'm either with Kai over there or Tsu usually. We keep busy enough that it doesn't even come to mind to watch television. Besides, Tsu says he doesn't own a tv." Zave said, starting to be surprised he never had seen a television. Now he wanted to see some of the shows that Rivener has seen. "I do watch movies though. He plays some older ones through the dvd player on his laptop, or else will take us to the theater. What movies do you like the most? Any ones you recommend?" Zave was talking to Rivener as they floated over to the examination table where Tsu was waiting. Tsu was good at his work, but Zave had learned that more of the raevans felt comfortable if he kept their attentions elsewhere while the exam was going on.
"If you don't mind Rivener, I'm ready to begin when you're ready to start." Tsu said putting on a pair of latex gloves.

Rivener climbed onto the table obediently to begin the tests, smiling at Zave and thoroughly ignoring the two humans. Tsu could go about his business of prodding at the Frei without hearing any complaints for Riv; he enjoyed being touched and prodded. "My favorite movies are ones that are very long, like Star Wars and Lord of the Rings... each of them is three whole movies, it keeps me entertained for a long time when I watch them. I really really like entertaining ones like those, that wouldn't happen in real life. I have to say I'm a little jealous of you, though. Even if you have no TV, you have more things to do, apparently."
Aphismet was following Dr Tsu quietly, hoping he would be able to find out how to control the scorpion Frei's poisonous powers without Rivener noticing. Therefore, Aph was keeping his trap shut, lest he say something that might arouse Riv's suspicions. He figured it wouldn't be too unsafe to reply to Tsu's comments about a completely different subject, though. "A klepto? Who? Oh, uh, nevermind, that's kind of a personal question. Can, em... can I ask you: does everyone who owns a Frei have a degree? Or at least, is going to school or college?" He was blushing quite hotly, keeping his eyes to the ground and his voice forcibly nonchalant.
"Do you ever go into the water, at the beach? I know we don't have legs, but I think I would very much like to try swimming," Riv continued.

"Hmmm... Star Wars..." Zavier mused aloud a little. "I'll have to request that one next time. We usually end up watching random action films or a lot of comedies. Nothing too deep or romantic... just something to pass the time. In times it's nice that Tsu lets me go about my own things, but in other times I wish he would pay a little more attention to me." Zave finished truthfully. He was finding it easy to be around Rivener and talk some. The raevan was fascinating in his own odd ways.
Meanwhile Tsu was checking other things. Careful to keep a warmer temperature on his instruments as to not be a bother. The soul of the scorpion would not take to the cold as readily as the Roc did... and Lazarus nearly bolted out when he used a cold metal stethoscope. Managing elements on all the raevans was getting to be a tricky thing. Pressing a warm piece of metal to Rivener's chest, Tsu listened to try and discern a heartbeat. Nothing quite yet though. Although the runes still glowed in a pulse similar to the idea of that heart beat. There should be more readings on this later. Finally taking out a vial, Tsu looked at the wings of the Frei. Gingerly touching the wings and moving along, Tsu finally managed to get a small amount of liquid secreted from the tips, which he captured in the vial and labeled.
Turning back to Aphismet, he motioned him to follow for a little bit. Zavier was good at keeping the other occupied, so they wouldn't miss him for a couple seconds. "Sorry for being so quiet during the examination. I find it best to let them focus on one thing really. Anyway, it'll be a little bit before I can find out how he actually changes the toxin compositions, but it might have to do with an accelerated knowledge from the shows he watches. He is a clever one, your Rivener... so just keep an eye on him - but don't treat him as a threat."
"You asked me in there about the other owners. To be honest, I've only met a few of them so far, as you probably first guessed, I tend to rub them the wrong way. Anyway, from what I gathered, a good portion do have degrees or are trying for some degree currently. I think you and Renhei are two of the ones not at this point.... but to be honest I don't think a degree necessarily means the person will be a good candidate for a raevan owner. The curiousity, creativity and passions you show probably sparked my brother's interest more than the fact that you graduated from any university. Hell... I may be a doctor in name... but there were times I was threatened with academic probation. You'll do fine if you have some confidence in yourself and well... quite frankly... some trust in Rivener. Now how about we go to that beach? The weather is still nice enough outside."
Meanwhile, Zave was still conversing energetically with his new Raevan companion. "I haven't tried going in the water yet. To be honest I didn't see the point without legs, but it might be interesting to see what it would be like. Maybe we can try today? What other things have you wanted to try to do at the beach?"
