Ahhh, fall. The temperature going down, night coming early and the sun raising a bit later. All those little telltale signs that hinted to the coming of the winter months.

But Wren's bane, right now... leaves. ALOT of leaves.

He was still convinced Zero had rigged the coin that had decided which of the sibilings would get the "honor" of racking up the leaves on the whole propriety. She had to have done it SOMEHOW.

It didn't help that it was also windy. It was almost oddly beautiful, really, to see those leaves fly as if they had a mind of their own. But, really, the reploid would probably have liked it better if the ones he was raking where staying STILL.

At least... His slave labor was almost over. There was only one little mountain of leaves left to put in bags... And Zero had promised him cake.

It was funny how the promise of home-baked sweets could make a man work faster.

It took everything within the blue haired teen not to let out a scream of victory as he finally finished, put the bags aside, and made his way to claim his chocolatey prize.

"DOOOONE~" And it was what he said when he made his way in, while grinning like an idiot. That made the blue haired woman look up from the homemade frosting she was making, and Zero stiffeled a laugh. "Hey, what's so funny ?!"

"You're covered in leaves." The elder grinned. "Are you sure you didn't jump into those leaves ? Don't move, you'll get them all over the house." Sending a braid behind her shoulders, Zero left her bowl of frosting unsurpervised (a bad idea in any house with children) and went to help out. "You even got some in your hairs ! How the hell did you do that ?"

"It's windy." Wren shrugged, made a leaf fall down, and caught it in mid-air.

"...Now that's odd." Zero rose an eyebrow, and earned herself an odd look from her brother.

"What ? It's a leaf."

"It's green, Wren." Zero sighed. He could be so dence sometimes... "It's not a dead leaf. I havn't seen a leaf that is still green in miles."

"Maybe it's some kind of super leaf or something ? Flew on and on for miles." He grinned as Zero rolled her eyes. Which little brother wasn't a pain, after all.

"Maybe you should put it in water and plant it this spring. Then we'll get a super tree."

"A leaf can grow roots ?"

"Someone needs to study some more biology." Zero finally finished with brushing her brother free of assorted dead leaves.

"Meh..."

"Maybe you're right and it's a special leaf. You never know... this world is crazy. I say put it in water. This place could use more trees."

Only when you're not the one raking all the leaves. The teen thought... but was smart enough to shut up and not bring on his own doom. "Yeah, I think I will."

"There's a glass over there, just put it in here and carry it home later." Zero shrugged, pointing to the sink. "But for now, I need someone to eat half my frosting as im trying to cream up this cake... or things will start feeling odd. Come on."

Dear journal -

That coin was rigged. I swear it was. SWEAR ! I had to rake up all the dead leaves off this place a few days ago. Thank god im made of metal or else I think ill'd be sore all over the place.

Apparently Zero claimed I was a scarecrow once I got myself inside and decided to brush me like one would brush a cat. It's not like her house is the palace of order ! Well, mine isn't either, but you get what I mean.

Anyway there was a leaf in my hairs that Zero found odd because it was still green. She told me to put it in a glass of water and maybe see if we can plant it when spring comes. I don't think leaves can grow roots but whatever.

I set the water glass on the counter, but... each time I come inside the kitchen the leaf is no longer in it's glass... it's on the ground. I closed the window since it's been windy lately, because, hey, it's not gonna grow roots if it's always on the ground.

Maybe Zero is right. Maybe it's not an ordinary leaf - I thought it would have started to turn brown and die by now... Since, you know, I keep killing plants without meaning to. Hell, I even managed to get a cactus to die on me. The shop person said I gave it too much water. What the hell ? Some water every week isn't too much !

Point being said... I suck at gardening. I kinda hope the leaf will live through. Ill't be my supertree and one day my kidlets will climb in it.

Hahaha.... Nahhhh. I still want it to live tho.

Dear journal -

Allright. There is something wrong with this leaf. Maybe it IS a mutant leaf.

Why, you ask ? Why I am becoming paranoid over a simple leaf ? Well, first of all, it's been in that little glass for about a month now and it is still green. Not wilting or anything, perfectly healthy and all that jazz.

Secondly, let's see about this : all windows closed. There is no wind, drafts, air cooler, whatever, running. I have to pets. The leaf finds it's way on the ground by itself with the glass perfectly upright and there is no water spill ANYWHERE.

I don't know about you, silly book I keep writing in, but there is something very odd going on in here. It's not growing any roots either. But if I go to Zero with my tales of the processed leaf, she would probably just laugh at me. But im not hallucinating or anything, I swear ! There is something odd with this thing !

But I guess I won't really know what the hell is going on until I catch it doing... whatever it does.

I hope it's not going to grow into an alien and eat me.

It was cold outside. Tyyne didn't like the winter a lot and so she was wrapped in layers of cloth as she moved towards her destination. Wren's home. Gently she placed a letter and an orange flowerpot in front of the door.

A letter from Eden

Dear Wren,

I'm not sure if you've heard of us yet, but we're an organization called Eden Project. The leaf you have found is a very special one. It will grow into a child if you take care of it. I know it sounds strange, but that's how it goes. To start the growing process you need to plant the little one. That's why I've attached a flowerpot and the soil. Every leaf seems to react different to this so please be gentle. Feel free to visit our headquarter near Barton Town.

Have a nice day

~Tyyne

Dumb christmas lights.

It was one of the few things that currently crossed Wren's mind, as he was finally hooking the last strand. Zero was supposed to do it, of course, but that was without counting Shiku wounding up sick. He was still thanking god that Zero had decided not to hook up the lights too high... Or maybe she had kept her brother's fears in mind and changed the emplacement of the multi-colored lights after she did figure out that Wren would be forced to hook them himself... Who knew ? At any rate, he was VERY thankful to his sister for not making him climb all the way onto the roof. He would probably have somehow gone to whatever middle point there was, start crying, and started screaming to be saved.

Thanksfully, the balcony wasn't that phobia-inducing. And, to make up for it, Zero was repairing his own motorcycle. He wasn't that big on christmas decoation himself - he could see why Zero bothered with them, with all the kids and other people that lived with her. It made sence for her to put up light, inside decoration, and dress up one of those funky fiber-optics tree. But him ? He lived alone. It was more than enough for him to get presents for his sister and the kids, and that was more than enough. His living room still looked like a tornado passed in it, from warping all those boxes.

"Shirren, you're done ?" Came a voice from inside, Zero peeking from the slide door. Wren really liked her sister's new hairstyle. It fitted her better, and the lack of braids kind of stopped the past from resurfacing in his mind.

"Almost." He answered. "One more stand to hook. Can you make me some hot chocolate ?"

"That's why I was asking. Didn't want it to be cold." She shrugged, turning back. Her clothes where stained with oil - she was done as well, which didn't surprise him one bit. He had gotten so much of their father's knowledge that it made him wonder if transfering knowledge form human to reploid was possible. In truth, long before he was born, Zero was allready there, observing everything, and learning that way.

Finally, the last stand of lights was hooked, and he made his way back in, kicking the snow off his shoes in order not to leave water everywhere. He hadn't been wearing a coat, as he only bothered to do so when going out in public so that he wouldn't spook anyone.

"Don't forget the marshmallows !" He sing-songed, as he came down the stairs, Zero rolling her eyes.

"Of course not, doofus. Hurry up, the cocoa's getting cold. Marshmallows don't melt in cold cocoa."

He gave no answer to that, but instead hurryed along and sat, much like a kid, to sip.

"Oh, and-" Zero stated, taking something from the ground and gentely putting it on the table. "That was at your door. Almost tripped in it too."

This caused the blue-haired teen to stop drinking, and give a puzzeled glance at the object. "A flower pot ? Someone's idea of a joke, maybe ?"

"Dunno. There's a letter in it, tho." She pointed at the enveloppe that poked out of the fresh soil. Wren took it and, after happy realising that the seal wasn't broken and that thus, Zero hadn't peeked in his things, opened it and started to read.

Then finally thanked himself that he wasn't drinking when he managed to choke on the very air he was breathing, which made his sister raise an eyebrow. "...Shirren... ?"

This couldn't be true. This couldn't be true. Could not. Impossible. Him... That leaf... that leaf was a kid ? Sure, he had caught it flying around, but... a kid ? He couldn't take care of a kid !!! He was way too young ! He didn't know WHAT to do ! He...

"SHIRREN !" It was Zero's voice that snapped him in reality. "Calm down, what's up ?!"

"I-I-It's..." He somehow managed before he simpely handed her the letter, and her own eyes whidened. "...Oh. I see."

In the split second it took for her to lower the paper, Wren was allready doing the puppy eyes. "...Shirren, no."

"But-"

"No." She said again. "Look at this house. Where do you want me to put this kid, in the bloody attic ?" She sighed. "Beside, it's been with you for months. It probably allready identified you as a parent, expecially if it IS a sentient flying leaf like you told me."

"Siren, I can't take care of a kid ! Look at me, do I look like father material ?"

"Do I look like mother material ?" Zero crossed her arms.

"Well, you're a girl, it h-" Wren VERY wisely shut up once his sister had repressed with THE glare, the one that meant he was probably gonna meet the wall if he kept on talking.

"Look." She said, firmly, but not too harshly at the same time. "Shiku was the first kid I got. When I figured out what was going on, I was panicing as much as you are right now. But things went okay, right ? I had no idea how to take care of a baby, but I did it. Only for the reason that I refused to let the little guy go to someone else in fear they would do worse than me - and I know you too much to think that you won't do the same. You're in a state of panic and that is perfectly normalĀ. But... I had no one to fall to, Shirren. Beside Trio that I don't see all that often. But... you have me, right ? You'll have the auntie to help you along, allright. I promise, okay ? I don't want that kid to wind up unhappy and I know you feel the same. It is allready attached to you, I bet, and the kid - whatever gender it is - will be unhappy to be born without his or her dad there."

"...Dad." Wren repeated, swallowing the saliva that had build up in his mouth. "...Siren, I don't think im ready."

"I don't think anyone is ever completely ready." She said, smiling. "But im here, remember ? Im not just good at screaming at you and fixing up motorbikes, Shirren. I can teach you what I have learned. Go get that leaf hon, we're gonna plant it. Allright ?"

Wren gave a long sigh... but, resigned, he got up and headed off in the snow trail that led to his house.

He knew that Zero was right. He only thought about letting her take care of it because he knew she could take care of children. It would never cross his mind to let someone else take the leaf.

So, it was true... he was becoming a father. A father of what, he didn't know yet. And right now, he was seriously too zoned to really care weither it was a pixie or a 8-legged monster mutant leaf.

He suddently understand all too well why those fathers fainted when their wife announced them that they where pregnant in those romance movies.

"Which side are we supposed to plant it... ?" By the time Wren had made his way back to his sister's house, he had at least recovered a little bit of his brainpower. He looked a bit like a kicked, resigned puppy, but Zero was quite sure it would pass once the... leaf was... born ? Or something. Children had that effect, even in reductrant teen-minded reploids.

"Well..." She couldn't help but scratch the side of her head a bit. "On which side was it in that water glass ?"

"I always put it in sterm first, but it always seemed to go sterm up after a few minutes."

"Then let's plant it sterm up." She decided. "Ill't prolly let us know if it's the other way around." ...It was still wierd talking about as leaf as if it was sentient, but she had no problem believing the fact. She had seen much, much wierder, after all. She went to take the leaf, but stopped herself. "You plant it. I havn't touched it yet, I would probably spook it."

"Right..." He agreed, gentely taking the leaf and handle it carefully enough as if it was a matter of life and death. It wriggered a bit in his hand, but not enough to actually get away. In fact, it seemed almost like it was trying to warp around his hand, but was too short to do so.

He, still as gentely as possible, put the leaf sterm-up into the fresh soil, and it gave a small wriggle of what seemed to be discontent as he let go, but stopped as he felt the soil close up the hole, and the hands that where doing the work.

Once Wren was done, Zero started to water it, gentely, until it started wriggeling again. The wriggeling stopped as the water flow did, and it started there, only giving a few calm movements before it finally quieted - worn out, perhaps ?

"Well... that was easier than I thought." Zero couldn't help but admit.

And Wren, deep inside him, knew that his live would never be the same.

Hey there, journal.

It's been quite some time since the leaf was planted - it's sitting on the desk beside me right now (I know, you're amazed I managed not to kill it) and... well, not much has happened. I found a job repairing cars and motorcycles right here at home and I am hoping that this will work out. Given that im the... only parent and all that. Zero can babysit, but she's pretty busy with her own.

Yeah... I kinda resigned myself to it. Im a dad. Well, at least im going to be. At least I don't get to deal with a pregnant, irritable, and bloodthirsty girlfriend ? Haha...

The leaf doesn't like to be left alone. At all. I've gotten it to tolerate Zero, thankfully, but unless one of us is there, it wriggles and will try to break free from the soil as if it was the worst damn thing... ever. When im here, she doesn't try to do that. It still wriggles, apparently a bit annoyed that it's stuck in something, but isn't so batcrazy about it. It calms down even more when I start to talk to it, as if it's, well... listening. Can a leaf hear sounds ? Im almost certain that they can, with how she reacted.

About that - call it gut feeling or intuition... But I am certain that this leaf is a girl. I have no idea why, but I just can't think of it as male. I brought her a few dolls for when she emerge, and Zero was just telling me I was being way too early for this - what if it was a boy ? Apparently she doesn't really trust my gut feeling. Bah. Im around this thing almost contently, one would think that I would know better than she do !

I havn't told her, but her room is almost done. In nice tones of pink. Girls like pink, right ? Nice soft colors. Yeah. And, if im wrong - which im sure I an NOT - ill just bribe Adrian to chance pink into blue. Here we go.

The only thing im missing is a name, really. I guess. A name and enough baby supplies to get myself lost into. That'll come later, it's a bit too late tonight, and I gotta get up early tomorrow.

Good night.

Hey again, journal.

The leafling's seem to be growing a little more restless at not being able to flutter. But hell, ill'd be pissed too if I was stuck in one spot for what.... s**t, one month and an half ? Ish ? How long do those things take to come out, anyway ? The note didn't say a thing. What if the kidlet decide to come out and im not there ?

Great. Parenthood is making me paranoid. At least I know it's still alive. Everything's mostly ready - sister unit dragged me out and helped me getting all I need to take care of a baby.

Oh, before I forget - I took pictures of the dolls I got for leafybaby here :

Yes, I am a nerd. I should be ashamed but im not. They are super cute and, most importantly, where pretty cheap too. Ence why there's so many. A girl never has enough dolls, right ? s**t, even Zero collects them to some point. And Zero is not AT ALL a girly girl. Nice, cheap, and in excellent condition. Take that, fate !

And all this left only one more thing to ponder on. I can't call the little lady (It's female, I tell you !) variations of the world leaf and kid forever. Zero was no help at all on that, told me I had to decide myself or some s**t, and that I didn't need to name her before she... well.... does whatever she does to be born. Psh to that - I need to be ready.

So I got to think. I wrote down various female name on a sheet of paper and crossed out the ones I didn't like. It did leave me with a few, but one in perticular caught me, the simplest of the bunch - Anna. But that's... well, too simple, right ? I don't want her to grow up and meet the bajilion other Anna's out here and think she's not special. Because, well, she will be my child so she WILL be special.

...Maybe Zero's right. Maybe im getting too used (but I refuse to admit that I am excited. I am NOT. ...Well, maybe a tinyass bit) to the idea of actually being this important in someone's life.

Anyway, then it hit me. My japanese is getting rusty (psh, a robot that forgets ! Im too human-like.) but then it hit me like how those characters get hit right in the face by one ton anvils in cartoons. Or a boulder. Or...

...I've been watching too much cartoons.

ANYWAYx2. From Anna, I got Hana. Similar sound, and, Hana is the japanese word for a flower. Flowers are one of the most lady-like things to ever grace this rock, so, yeah ? Damn, im clever. But it needed... something more. The leaf seems to like flying, so maybe a flying thing, I though. Something graceful and cute and...

Then I got another anvil in the face, so to speak. Cho. Butterfly. Hana Cho. Flower Butterfly. Cute and lady-ish no ? Not only do this kid have a first name, she got a middle name too. She seemed to like it as I spoke it out loud. She wriggeled a bit and I think she tried to hug my hand in some kind of leaf-ish fashion once I got close enough. Kind of wierd but I guess that means she approve.

Wow, it's getting pretty late. Gonna tell Hana goodnight, for I think I have a date scheduled... with my pillow ! Heheh.

He must have been going crazy, he suddenly realised suddenly, as he caught himself humming to the leaf in the pot, sitting snugly beside his monitor on the desk. But then it was also pretty rare that a leaf was moving along with your hummings as well. At moments, Wren really did wonder if the child in the leaf could truly hear him, or if it was only moving along the sound waves he was making.

But then, did he really care ? If he was a fool, then he was an happy fool. One hand went to his headset to sync it up with the computer's wireless and then he sang along to the tune.

The more I see, the less I know
The more I like to let it go
Hey oh, whoa

Deep beneath the cover of another perfect wonder
Where it's so white as snow
Privately divided by a world so undecided
And there's nowhere to go

In between the cover of another perfect wonder
And it's so white as snow
Running through a field where all my tracks will be concealed
And there's nowhere to go

And the little leaf wriggeled.

And at that moment, Wren wondered if he had finally found the reason why he was created, the reason why he pulled out of his dark side for. The reason he had to live.

Hey, journal.

I only now realised that it has been months since I last wrote. Alot of things have happened and I don't really wanna talk about it right now. This is not the place anyway - it's Hana's journal, not mine.

My leafybaby, well. If it wasn't for the fluttering, ill'd be sure she would be dead by now. I keep her watered (I found that adding some sugar to the water seems to help) and she still moves, but she's still a leaf. Im starting to wonder if it's all some kind of joke, but surely no one's crazy enough to keep up a joke for one full year. I've been trying to track down this Eden Project, but I've had no luck so far. She doesn't seem ill... she's just not... progressing.

And I have no idea what to do about it.

Leaves are supposed to turn colours in the fall but white spots on them are usually a bad sign. Still Hana's leaf has turned orange with white spots along the edges. Though the constant wiggling it's doing seems to indicate that it is indeed still alive and healthy.

What's going on?
PostPosted: Thu Sep 13, 2007 4:19 pm

Over the last few days, Wren had tried to hunt down the Eden Project - in the form of a building, a phone number, anything - but he hadn't really gotten anywhere. His work hours hadn't really helped his search either, to be perfectly honest.

At least Zero wasn't heckling him to rake the leaves yet - it would have been a bit too much irony, given that it would pretty much mark the one year of having came across the leaf.

He entered his room and threw his coat on the bed messily, sitting in his computer chair and tossing an hand in his front bangs. There where a few oil stains on him still - some blanding with his tattoos - but he didn't care right now. He needed to relax a bit.

Unfortunately for him, it was not to be, as he spotted the leaf at that instant, and froze.

OH SHI-

He peered to take a closer look. Thanksfully the white spots didn't look like mold, but at the moment his mind processed a little more differently. It went more like :

OH s**t IT'S ORANGE IT MEANS IT'S DYING OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD

All he could really do is stare. In his panic, the fact that it was moving completely bypassed his own-track mind.

The leaf was far from dead but it was certainly changing. Suddenly the wiggling stopped and lead bean the spin and almost glow. It seemed to be getting larger and turning a sort of pasty gray as if it were a Caterpillar spinning a cocoon.

Then almost as fast as the spinning had begun it stop leafing behind a large leaf shaped chrysalis that clearly had something moving inside it.

It was too bad Wren has never studied biology, really, else he could probably have understood exactly what was going on, or at least had an inkling.

But he was clueless, and very, very, very paniced. What was he supposed to do now ? Call Zero ? It's not like she would know any better !

He stared down at the... thing that his life had become, and slowly found himself calming down. Sightly. There was something moving inside this thing. This was a good thing. Right ? Right ?

He found himself holding his breath without really realising that he was.

With a crackling sound like crumpling paper and a flash of light, the chrysalis split down its center.

When the light faded, a small girl sat where only seconds ago had been a pot and a very unusual leaf. She looked tired, like she had just fought her way out of prison, but she managed a giggle and a self-satisfied grin.
