"It would certainly be easier working with foals. They learn from the start what are the wrong and right actions and it shapes them to be wiser adult. It's more difficult to try to change one after they are already an adult.. as was proven by Calamity. Foals.. would be a wise addition to this herd." Rot wasn't sure what Maeryn was talking about specifically, but she seemed to be on the same track of him when it came to the herd needing foals. Was the 'we' in reference to parenting, or as the leaders of the herd? He was not sure.
"We would be able to protect them well, Maeryn," was all he could say. It was true. Regardless of if they were his own foals, he would protect them as if they were. He would teach them as if they were. There was no doubt about that. There was a flutter in his stomach at the idea of him siring foals. What an idea!

What in the world was she thinking? She'd spoken of the need for foals with another stallion not so long ago, but she knew that when she had, she was encouraging him to go out and find someone to breed with. Now, it was not so clear. Maeryn had decided something, and now that it was in her head, the idea refused to leave her. It absolutely refused. "You would be able to protect the foals as no one was able to protect... -" well, her. "- others." She was not so different from Rhiana in some ways. If she had had a son, she would have stood up for him even if he had turned into a creature such as Calamity, but she hoped that if she did raise foals they would not follow that path.
"You would be a good father to them." Father? ... Where had she slipped? She'd meant to say 'Protector'. "A good example. It would be best for the young ones to be surrounded by our kind, I think. This herd idea was not so wild as I had first thought." Damn. She hadn't meant to be so transparent, but perhaps it would not work out so badly as she supposed. "There are dangers now, and while those dangers are concentrated on the two-leggers and their tame pets... our numbers are so few, don't you think?" They weren't exactly taking advantage of the peace they had.

Rot couldn't help but catch the pause. He wondered what had happened in Maeryn's life. He knew so little about her past but it seemed like a door best left closed. It would open when and if she ever wanted. It wasn't his place or anyone else's to know the secrets she held.
"I would protect them well," he assured her. "As for a good father, I wouldn't know as I've never been one before, but I'd try my best to be." Was she hinting that he should be the one to sire foals? It seemed to be that way. But was she offering to be the mother or would she simply suggest someone else for that task. He wasn't quite sure. The idea of breeding with the other females was less than stellar.
"Maeryn, I mean no offense in asking this, I'm not very good at reading between the lines or making guesses, but would you like to breed with me? I would never do anything to hurt you, and I would be there for you and the foals. If we are going to have foals in this herd, don't you think it should be done right? Be with the right lineage?" Rot had no idea how she'd accept that but really, the idea of the others in the herd breeding between one another was a little.. odd. Not many good matches to be found. It probably wouldn't get any better than them, themselves.

"I had thought of that, yes." Which was not precisely an answer. She was getting to that. Maeryn took awhile to consider Rot's offer, wondering whether it would actually be a good idea to follow that course of action. Yet... now, it seemed as though there was a lull between battles, and more cohesion in the herd. The time was well suited to that purpose, and if there was a better time for it, she hadn't seen it yet. Also, if she let this opportunity slide, she might never have the chance for such a pairing. And really, the foals would be better suited with a sire like Rötschreck. Besides... she almost trusted him. She could swear she did.
"Yes, I think that it should be done right." She was curious, really. Would he, could he really be that type of father, that type of stallion? It was not against the grain of a Kalona. No, in fact... she suspected that it made for a stronger breed. "I would." She was accepting? Was she mad? What was she thinking? The inane, irrational fear rose up, and she squashed it down, sternly commanding it. No, damn it, she would not allow the success of her herd to be undermined by a handful of petty concerns. And there was the matter of her own personal happiness. Remaining so scarred would not help her with that.

Rot nodded. He wasn't sure what to do or say. The idea of him being a father was a lot to take in. He had thought about it before, in passing. Who didn't think about such things once in awhile? But for it to come close to being a reality was new. He wondered how awkward the.. breeding ritual... would be. Would it complicate things between him and Maeryn? If it did, it would be for a greater cause and he would be a good father. Foals were a blessing in life, for all races.
The idea of foals made him smile. He could imagine himself playing with them. What a silly thing to picture a Kalona stallion doing. Would it be weak to appear so? He was stern to Calamity and Toku, but that was because they were adult males. Despite wanting to help them learn, they were a threat based on their gender and age. He couldn't see himself acting the same way to his own foals. To their own foals.
Rot realized he had been quiet for some moments and turned his attention back to Maeryn. "It will be done," he stated. "I'll leave the details of when and where to you.. as to anything else. I want you to be as comfortable with the act as possible." He hoped he didn't come off as too forward but he suspected she had a wariness of males. She made it pretty obvious. "We will make great parents, Maeryn," he added reasurringly. "It might even do us both a bit of good." He didn't go into that any further. Didn't want to analyze the situation to the point of killing the idea. He really wanted these foals. The more he thought about it, the more his heart hurt. It was a good pain.

Maeryn was vaguely unsettled by that smile. It brought up all sorts of emotions that she was not sure she wanted to deal with. She couldn't help but be affected by it, and she smiled for a moment in return. It was an unconscious reaction, one that she had not thought out beforehand. He behaved with an unexpected consideration. She truly had not been prepared for that from a male, and it pushed her off balance. She was running blind now, working off of instincts alone... and what little was left of her senses.
Was this move of hers only for the foals? Yes, she wanted them. Yes, she thought that it was a good time for them. Yes, she considered it necessary for the betterment of their race, but it also seemed that she had less impersonal reasons for this decision. It seemed that this ruby stallion was finding a place in her 'black little heart', even if only as the future sire of her foals. She could have laughed, remembering that it was Selene the Flutter-alicorn who had dubbed it so. "Someone will think that I wish to rule the world, with this dynasty I am creating," she said with a hint of humor.
"I have no doubt that we will learn much from this experience. Maybe I will even develop some patience along the way." Now that they had decided, she felt just a bit more at ease around him, and at the same time, a little self conscious. "I would ask that this not be mentioned, but I think that I don't need to worry about that." He didn't seem the type to bandy that sort of 'gossip' about. "I've been thinking of inviting that strange black Kalona to join our ranks," she said musingly, changing the subject.

Rot nodded. "I think the black kalona would be an interesting addition to the herd. The females seem to be outnumbering the males though. Surely there are other Kalona stallions out there?" Rot knew of only Calamity and Atrocity, and neither one of them was an option for the herd.
"Ill survey the land tomorrow. See if I can find any signs of other males. If not... perhaps we will be lucky and end up with a couple," he chuckled (a sound that still sounded strange to ears of others), "Though a daughter like you would be nice." Damn, couldn't he go five minutes without thinking about the foals. He didn't want to appear over-excited. He needed to watch that. He had priorities to concentrate on.

The way that Rot behaved, the excitement he seemed to feel over foals that had not yet been so much as conceived actually heartened Maeryn to some extent. It made her feel just a bit more confident about the whole idea. The fact that he wanted to be a father just as much as she wanted to be a mother was good. It meant that he would probably treat the foals better than she'd been treated as a foal, and seen other foals treated. She had made up her mind long ago against treating her own children with cruelty.
No, that harshness would not help them to grow into strong, independent beings. It would not help their intelligence, or their fortitude. The traits that were so vital to Kalona were natural to them, and only exceptions like Calamity and Drizzt lacked them. ... She was rather of the opinion that Drizzt, who strongly stood up for his beliefs and exemplified everything he believed in, was much more a true Kalona than Calamity was. Oh yes, he was different, but that difference could almost be respected.
Almost. "Do you really think so? I would like a daughter, although... it would be best to have more stallions in this herd," she said, musing over the possibilities. "Perhaps there will be a mixture." She liked that idea. A strong, powerful son... taking after his father, with the intelligence and vision of both parents. A true Kalona, an ideal of their race. She was excited about the idea of foals, herself, and could not wait to discover what they would be like. What sort of personalities might the little ones have?
Would she be able to protect them, or would they fall prey to the same things that she had experienced as a young filly? "Heartless. I think her name is Heartless. It is not so abnormal to have a herd more composed of females than males. Still... we could use a few more stallions. I hope that your search bears fruit." If only that grey stallion she had met within her first sojourn into the Soquili lands was not so firmly rooted into his ideals. Ah well. There would be others.

Rötschreck grinned, nearly from ear to ear, an awkward feat for the large stallion. To most, it would probably appear threatening due to his sharp teeth. "Oh, I'm sure at least one will be a stallion. I'm counting on it. Need to have someone in line for this position when I get too old to maintain it. If not the first batch, eh, we'll just have to try again," he teased. He teased? Rot wondered what was coming over him lately. He felt different lately and it was affecting him on unusual levels. Perhaps he should seriously consider mentoring Toku for the position, but he'd like to hope that one day, his own son would take over.
Rot really didn't think he'd succeed on his search for males. They were more stubborn than females because of their ego. They don't want to bow down to another male in charge. Most that do are either weaker than Rot or actually intelligent enough to see beyond their own need for power to what's beyond it. Males of intelligence were very rare.
