What are you talking about? I just read the manga! (If so, pick 'Subtitles' if you read the original manga and print off translations and 'Dubbing' for the manga that is already translated into English)

i, personally, enjoy the subtitles because it helps me continue to learn japanese...^^;; however, i have quite a few friends who are professional voice actors and i love hearing their voices and puffing up saying 'i know that voice! mwahahaha!' so i'm for both. 3nodding

Texas?! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I used to live in Tx, I grew up there, but a few years back I moved to PA. Had I known that I was so close, I would have tried out! Sure it is for free at first, but perhaps that can help you get your foot in the door to start making a living at it. crying crying crying crying crying crying crying crying crying crying crying

Oh, I know, sometimes I think that would just be the best job! Idylly (and I'm well aware that this would never happen), I'd like to go to Japan and work for a company, y'know, do screenwriting for a show. But my Japanese will have to get a hell of a lot better than it is now! I'm taking classes, but we're going so slow for my tastes... which is probably why I started working ahead... ^^; Anyway, I might have to check out that ADV website (although, admittedly, I usually despise ADV's dubs). What a great opportunity that would be...

As far as the subject of this forum goes, I voted for subtitles but truthfully I'll take it either way. I think FY was a decent dub as far as dubs go, but unfortunately the sub was SO fantastic that it would've been nearly impossible for the U.S. version to match up to it. Sometimes I think it just has to do with the show, too, like to me "Cowboy Bebop" feels more natural in English, but "Inuyasha" seems better in Japanese. And then there're shows like "Utena," where I switch off each episode because I think both casts do such a good job. ^.^ I'm so indecisive.

Companies have a lot to do with it too, did you ever notice that? Like on average ADV dubs aren't so hot, but Pioneer typically does a wonderful job. (I'm probably the only person in the known world who notices things like that... sweatdrop )

Voice acting would be a really fun job! Isn't Mel Gibson's brother a voice actor for something? I thought he was, anyway, it seems like, although the acting itself would be fun, the people you work with would be the ones who make it worthwhile.

Last year at Ohayocon I got the chance to talk to Scott McNeil and a few other voice actors for a while, and they are all so crazy! It just seems like the kind of job where you get to hang out with your buddies all day long, not to mention the fact that...hello! You're a voice actor!

I also agree with Rihga comments on Cowboy Bebop, to me, it sounds better in English. I dunno know why, but I guess some things are just like that. I think that Angel Sanctuary sounds WAY better in Japanese, as does Vampire Princess Miyu. Magic Knights Rayearth sounds alright in English, although I prefer the Japanese, but it at least doesn't make me cringe...*cough cough* Fushigi Yuugi *cough cough*

no preference: subs make are fun because you here the original voices. Dubs are great when you are kind of tired and don't want to read and watch at the same time. That sounds so lazy but sometimes it is just true

Ah, I love the Den translations! Summaries are always helpful too, and Tetris no Miko is super-awesome! I was doing some research for a fanfic and needed to see what happened in one scene from the Mitsukake novel, and she translated it for me, for completely free! So she's one of my favorites now. ^_^

I think Tasuki no Miko translated Eikou Den and Genrou Den, too, but I'm not sure about the HTML for her...

Gods, I was just surfing around and I found how many translations she had done, my jaw dropped to the floor! I had only read Genrou Den, Seiran Den, Eikou Den, and part of Shouryuu Den! I had no idea that Tetris no Miko had translated so many! Gods, bless her!

Tasuki no Miko did translate Genrouden and Eikouden, and the HTML is linked from Tetris no Miko's page, and Tasuki no Miko's site can be found here! http://members.xoom.virgilio.it/tasukinomiko/Anime/FY/

I like dubbing better, becuase I can't keep up with the subtitles. But I like the original voices better than the English ones

It really depends on what it is or what I've watched it in first. For example, I saw Yu Yu Hakusho first in Dubs so that's what I like it in. (<- Even though the sub isn't bad.) I first saw Angelic Layer in Subs and DESPISED the dub. (<- The voice suck!! Suck, I say! Suck!)

I think that there are just some anime where you can't even compare the sub and dub. FY's Japanese was just FANTASTIC, and their voices and vocal inflections cannot be imitated in the English, or it would sound stupid. And that's the problem with dubbing in general. The two languages are so different that you won't be able to get the same result. Despite every fans wish of having "No Da" in the dub, it really would just sound dorky with Chichiri's english actor. And on top of it all, half of the viewing audience wouldn't understand what he meant, and think he was saying No Duh. Can you imagine how different people would look at someone if he went around saying No Duh all the time. People would hate him ~_~

You can't really compare the Japanese actors to the English actors, you have to compare the english actors to the characters. You have to say, "Takehito Koyasu aside, what does Hotohori sound like? Deep, velvety, masculine. Does Sparky Thorton sound like he could be Hotohori? Does his acting portray a believeable character? If Hoto were here, talking to me in English, is this a possibility of what he would sound like?"

Don't get me wrong, I'm a sub fanatic. There are many anime where I won't consider an english version *cough* Saiyuki *cough* But keep in mind that English voice actors are charged witht eh duty of creating a character that an english speaking audience will be able to relate to. Many things are lost in the transfer, but somewhere out there, some poor hapless guy who can't read subs fast enough is understanding the character better because of a lame american joke, rather than a Japanese word play that makes no sense in translation.

I heard FY in the english first. When I heard it in Japanese, I loved it <3 But I still think a majority of the actors in english did a great job with their character, and that's what makes it a great dub.

And for the record, I like Tomo, Miaka, and Hotohori's voice in the English. >.>
