"They live a few buildings away from us now," stated Nereida. "I was pretty good friends with him until a few days ago, but now we're fighting and I'm not even sure why."

As usual, Kayce didn't waste a single moment dillydallying around. She just cut straight to the heart of the matter. "What happened a few days ago?" she inquired, taking a few sips of water and sitting herself comfortably on the edge of her bed, her legs dangling down over the side. "You can come sit down if you like."

Nereida gratefully hopped up onto the bed. "Remember my raft? I did a lot of work on it, and you can take it out on the open ocean now. Anyways, Gage and his little brother Jack and Darsais and I took it out a few days ago. It stormed, he fell overboard, I hauled him back on. And he's acting all humiliated about it."
Nereida did not mention CPR. She'd save that part of the story. Dramatic tension and stuff.

Kayce took only a moment to ponder. Gage was angry because Nereida saved his life? That was an illogical pattern of behavior, and from what she knew of Gage, he was very logical. "He is humiliated just because you pulled him back onto the raft?" she queried, one eyebrow raised in mild disbelief.
She had to silently add that taking a raft out to open ocean during a storm was stupidity at its finest. Even if the storm had come up later, there would have been warning signs when they left. How ridiculous.

CPR? Kayce reached deep into her memory banks before she came up with the necessary information. "Being suddenly thrown overboard can make it hard to hold your breath," she observed, though she was surprised that CPR had been necessary. "How did you find the proper hand placement for chest compressions? And why is that so shameful for him?"

"Well, he's still alive and mad at me, so I did something right," scowled Nereida. "But he and everyone else who was there is convinced I was kissing him."
She made a disgusted face and a gagging noise.
"Like I would want to."

Kayce lifted the corner of her lip in a gesture of disgust. Kissing was disgusting. How could they mistake something as obvious as mouth-to-mouth resuscitation for kissing? "They take in everything incorrectly," she said. "I can agree with you about not wanting to kiss. It's gross and unsanitary."
That was, perhaps, putting it mildly. Who knows the amount of diseases and germs passed by kissing, not to mention it was gross to kiss someone with bad breath, she was sure.

Perhaps he was humiliated by the fact that he had to be saved. A male's ego was a very fragile thing, after all. "He may come to his senses soon. He seems to be very rational," Kayce pointed out with all the wisdom of one not directly involved in the situation. Yes, his pride was just damaged. Time could fix that.

Nereida nodded solemnly, but she harshly disagreed with Gage being rational. He sure wasn't being rational now.
"How've you been?" she asked, eager to change the subject. "And how many siblings do you have?"

Kayce did notice the not-so-subtle subject change, but she elected not to mention it. Obviously, Nereida had no wish to dwell on it. "I have been well. I am learning a great deal from my books," she said, taking another sip of water. "I have many siblings. Aryana, Caleb, Erin, Kari, Nieva, and Tanith. Six, as of right now."

As of right now? Wondered Nereida. Did that mean there was a chance for more?
Nereida could barely deal with Darsais some days. She couldn't imagine what have six siblings would be like. And from what Nereida had seen, most of them were younger than Kayce!
"Do you do anything to avoid them?"
Clearly, Kayce didn't just grin and bear it. That would be too passive.

To Kayce, that seemed a stupid question. Honestly, who would want to spend that much time with siblings?! Of course she avoided them! "Yes. I go riding with Missy. I read up in the treehouse or here, and I run in the backyard. They usually leave me alone."
Actually, they usually avoided her like the plague. She 'creeped them out', according to Tanith.
