bakahito NakaTake hieiandkurama There phones are so awesome! I love the keychain they put on them too. I have a keychain from Japan that I put on my cellphone and it's cute! My personal favorite brand is DoCoMo. DoCoMo isn't a brand..it's a service provider 3nodding Megaman: I think you have to pay for the phone when you activate it with a plan, but from what I hear, sometimes you can keep it afterwards. :/ I don't know, they're really strict about it is all I know. I have a model that a lady at a denki gave me last year in Japan that was old...but it's like a toy xD. Actually, DoCoMo technically is a brand because they design all of their own phones in conjunction with major manufactures like Sony-Ericsson, Fujitsu, Motorola, etc. You can always keep your phone but if you have Vodafone/Softbank or DoCoMo you can just switch out the UIM (like a SIM card) into the new phone. au-KDDI and Wilcom whipe your phone when you deactivate but you can generally keep it with you even after the service is done with But then in that sense wouldn't all service providers also be considered brands? Because aren't most phone models company / service provider exclusive? My view was that you sign up for DoCoMo/Vodafone/au-KDDI/Tu-Ka/etc {service}, using a Toshiba/Sharp/Panasonic/et al. {brand} phone. sweatdrop That was just my take on it though. And, just out of curiosity, do Chuuko / Used Cellphone stores still exist? I didn't see any when I visited / heard that you can no longer purchase them without service contracts in place.

Actually, KDDI and Vodafone don't design their own phones (for the most part) and, technically speaking, you can use most European phones on Vodafone's network. DoCoMo just happens to design their own phones and rarely use the product name (i.e. Panasonic, Sony, etc) over their own DoCoMo branding. I think that cellphones, unless you buy them off an online auction house, aren't sold used because of the strict recycling laws for cellphones. Also, many people who don't recycle their cell phones keep them for kicks and never sell them.

I get it now...I think. sweatdrop xd I remember hearing about a cellphone store in Tokyo that got closed down because they sold modified software phones to foreigners...like, they weren't completely unlocked, but it was like, reselling a modified version of the original for profit, hence no good for the companies. Japan seems to be really picky on what stays in their country and what goes out. And @ Chocobanana: I heard similar...and when I went to Japan this year, all my friends and even relatives had purchased new phones from when I last saw them a year ago. xd I don't happen to like the phones in the US enough to actually spend money on them and replace them constantly :/

I've noticed that most keitai are much heavier and clunkier than their American counterparts. My keitai kinda sucks, actually. Probably because I'm a foreigner... sweatdrop
I really miss my American phone because my Vodafone sucks! gonk

I have a question for everyone:: I"m going on exchange at the end of the year and I'd like to be able to email my parents without being a burden to my host family and the school I'll be attending. I've considered doing something like pre-paid or just... buying a phone and cancelling after my month and a half is up.
What is better? What is cheaper? What has all the bells and whistles?

About the prepaid phones; be careful, some of them can't send e-mails. as for the other options,i can't really tell you! i would buy a prepaid if you only stay for one month and a half.

Now that's amazing. No wonder everyone's on their cell phone all the time. xd WTF? Photoshop, on your cell? Whoa, talk about versatile. *wishes American phones were that versatile*

The prepaid is the way to go. Most cellphones charge you a butt load of money if you cancel before 3-5 months. I know that my DoCoMo charges 50,500yen if you cancle before a certain time and if you don't have a gaikokujintourokushoumeisho (gaijin ID) you can't get a contract phone. Prepaids are kinda clunky and unstylish but they can do email messages like most other phones. Tu-Ka (au/KDDI) and Vodafone/Softbank are the two companies that offer them, so check them out at the local electronic shop.

NakaTake Japanese Cellphones are so much more exciting (in my opinion) than anything we have elsewhere. They have so many different models too! I would have liked to have bought one while in Japan, but several stores (non - official, only carriers of the major service providers) said that the Japanese government made some sort of law that extends to foreigners not residing in the country that restricts them from any purchasing / selling / obtaining a keitai. They're soo cool :0 They're a little heavier, but have excellent camera's and high tech features. Some of the service providers include: NTT Docomo, Vodafone, AU (KDDI), TU-KA (I haven't seen this one that much), etc. Has anyone else seen Japan's cellphones before? Discuss ~ heart @Aiko, Rindi, Anyone else in Japan: Out of curiosity, how does the service plan work there? Is it a yearly subscription/package, or payment by minute outside of pay as you go phones. I luv the Japanese cellphones there much more versitile than the English ones oh god I wish I could get one alas I am stuck with an american one but I can't complain its a picture phone!
