Its basically anywhere from a light to heavy side kick to the side or back of the knee joint which causes it to collapes depending on balance or stance..... A heavy blow in this manner is often times devasting...

I have a couple of nice tricks.
Firstly step on your opponents front foot as you move in. He can't back away and tends to bend over backwards to avoid you firsts. Sheft the foot to just behind the leg and floor him..... fun.

Also straight punch to chin, oppenent deflects, large stp forward and move in with an elbow with the same arm.... very nice.....

If you are sparring with your juniors, get in close... very close.... junoris HATE that....heheheh

My nickname? "Sijeh b***h from hell"..... muahahaha

I am not nasty... really i'm not!

I've sparred alot of juniors in my time, and considering I'm in th adult class, and I train alot of these kids, not one hates being close in. Close in they can get you pretty fast. Their size is below your gaurd, best way to go for shorter people is stay out, and in and out. Maybe some kicks to make them flinch, then dive in with a low punch to score their stomach.

Ouch, I take it its particularly effective on the standing leg if they r trying to kick you?

I think she meant junior grades, not kids. And I'd have to agree with her, when people first start sparring (generally, apart from the nutjobs) they tend to be quite vulnerable to intimidation tactics...

but why would you want to intimidate the junior ranks. Your not there to scare them. Your probably there to encourage them on sparring, get them interested and think they can do it. Be nice and easy on them at first, and u can teach them anything, and get a hell of alot better. Slowly become intimidating, and they get used to it. Only reason u should intimidate the jrs. is if your sparring soemone else, more your rank and size. Showing how well u can handle that, or how well they can kick ur a**. Then they will strive to be better than you to show u up.
Intimidating them won't help them.

honestly, even intimidation is a good motivating factor..but it's gotta be used in the right situation. I'm not high enough in my chain to really do any of the intimidation, but if you're teaching, intimidation can be a great teaching technique. I've seen it done by some of the people who've taught me...you put the fear of God into your students and nine out of ten times, they'll try harder, push themselves further..basically give just a little bit more..

on the other hand, there's also a very fine line between intimidation and just being a bully. noone likes a bully..

Sorry I have to disagree. I dont condone it for everybody, or even most people. But you always get those people (especially the young guys) when they first start to spar that get wound up about the fact they cant hit you, so start hittin harder and swingin more wildly. Infact I dislike sparrin newbs more than someone whose been doin it a while because they are more unpredictable and have less control. The only options in that situation is either hit them back hard or scare them. I prefer to go for the second option, slip past everything they throw, get in real close and give them a manic grin from about 6 inches away, tends to do wonders for attitude. I get this a lot, its not something I'd do to someone who is obviously nervous of sparrin, in that situation you fall back on chuckin nice slow single techniques that aren't even on target. But I quite often get people (lads or older blokes mainly) who fancy themselves as a bit of a hard man (or did in their youth) wantin to test themselves on the senior grade. They'll never learn anything if you just let them beat you, and they wont learn much if you fold em around your foot an dump em on the floor

in my school, we do alot of sparring. and our main rule when it comes to sparring is the lower rank dictates the pace. if they want to go light and concentrate on technique, the higher ranks are expected to comply..or get serious repercussions.(we're supposed to know better). if they want to go a little harder, we're all for giving them a few knocks..

the caveat to this, though, is power feeds power. that's where you have to be careful. the lower belt doesn't realize he's going hard, the higher belt matches, the next thing you know, the lower belt is turning it up a notch in what he percieves is more aggression.. sooner or later it almost turns into a brawl..

personally, I prefer fighting people with higher belts who are more fit, taller, faster, stronger..whatever.. it makes me work that much harder.

... and I just realized that this has almost nothing to do with the previous post. bleh. sweatdrop

I see what you are saying. The thing is when people dont have much experience, they might say they want it light an then they go and lamp you because they dont know better. As a senior fighting a junior if you get caught with a hard blow its considered your fault because as you say you should know better. But I've found in that situation where the junior is going really hard and not realising they are (thats the important point), a quick scare works better than upping the force of your blows. Because if it degenerates into a brawl, again its the seniors fault because they should know better

hey, duce..I'm wondering..I don't have alot of experience with MMA...could you break down a regular training routine for me? I'd like to see if I can get some insight into how you guys work..

You gotta drill the basics of everything. Nothing fancy, just practice throwing punch combos, your roundhouse and side kicks and a basic submission or two. Its much easier to train with a partner. I dont take much MMA though. Only once a week or so, most of my training is TKD.

hrm. that's an interesting combination. you get the locks and what not from MMA, but you got the leg strikes from TKD....

have you noticed any hindrances training both at once? I ask because they're very dissimilar styles.. like your stance.. is it mainly the stand up style that TKDers use or the lower styles I've seen MMAers prefer? or do you switch between the two?
PostPosted: Thu Nov 11, 2004 2:55 pm

You only use what you need. I use my TKD stances because they let me kick better. Kicking is still my strong suit. The idea isnt to master every style, its to learn enough to adapt. The lower stances help shoot in, but I want to avoid grappling, so it really depends on what your main style is.

ya. I totally agree with the whole using what works/using what you're good at ideaology...you know..the whol adaptation thing.. I was just wonder if you've ever found your styles conflict with eachother cause they're so dissimilar...
