But, it is the way I am. I can't change my character. I might want to sometimes, but I can't. As for why I try to get rid of my emotions instead of letting them pass, I don't believe I'm strong enough to do that. And I'm afraid I don't know how to become 'a spectator of my own body.' And I just don't know how to dwell. I can't stand feeling sad. I'm not trying to say that it's a good thing or that I should do that; I merely don't have the motivation to change.

Sure you can do all that stuff! Humans are born immediately being like that... babies are quite enlightened, Socrates said so himself... "we are born knowing everything, and we forget as we grow older." You don't seem to care much about being happy... that's very admirable... I see you're someone who believes the Popeye Theory, and I completely respect that. I've found that by staying completely neutral and just marveling at the world because it's there, I can be really happy, though... other people give up trying to get it to work, but I imagine everyone CAN.

What is the Popeye Theory?

There are so many songs and bands that have impacted my way of thinking. Either by providing the right mood to let my mind wander to untraveled territory or the words that directly or indirectly cause a realization. Have you ever listened to a song hundreds of times, and then one day realize a hidden meaning of the words - whether or not the artist intended that meaning to be there?

Case in point... I made this stupid nonsense song with a friend many months ago, and after listening to it several times I realized there were several hidden meanings within it - even though the words of the song came to me with an empty and free mind while tuning my guitar. I'd like to share the song with you all. It's kinda blue-grass folkish which is NOT my usual style, as I'm normally a "satanic rocker" as the one guy said. Maybe I made this song just to torture myself? Anyways, here's a link to it. Download, listen and share as you please.

Rotten Sausage
http://www.80stoysale.com/stonerr/RottenSausage.mp3

And here are the lyrics:

I'm a sausage, rotten sausage
Rottin' away in the sand.
I'm a sausage, rotten sausage
Stinkin up your hand.
And I don't need any mustard.
Cuz I'm just a rotten piece of ham.
You just go and throw me away
Like the piece of garbage that I am.

I'd like to quote some songs of other artists as well & discuss the effects music has on outlooks on life, but I'll save that for later.

Okay... it's been a few days since my last post so I'm going to move on. xd

One band that really put my mind in a new perspective is an old British punk band called "Crass." They angered the church and the government to the point of being arrested purely by their music! Here's a phrase that really hit me hard:

Be exactly who you want to be. Do what you want to do.
I am he, and she is she, but... You're the only you.
No one else has got your eyes, can see the things you see.
It's up to you to change your life, and my life is up to me.
The problems that you suffer from, are problems that you make.
The s**t we have to climb through, Is the s**t we choose to take.
If you don't like the life you live, change it now it's yours!
Nothing else effects if you don't recognize the cause.
If the programs not the one you want, GET UP, turn off the set.
It's only you that can decide what life you're going to get.
If you don't like religion you can be the antichrist
If you're tired of politics you can be an anarchist.

But no one ever changed the church, by pulling down the steeple.
You'll never change the system by bombing number ten...

If you don't like the rules they make, refuse to play their game.
If you don't want to be a number, don't give them your name.
If you don't want to be copped out, refuse to hear their question.
Silence is a virtue, use it for your own protection.

Many of Crasses songs are both philosophical and political. All about thinking for yourself and not letting governments get away with crimes, basically. They're also all about peaceful revolution as violence doesn't change anything but get people hurt and install a new regime. I just may have to quote another song by them later.

Music more of inspires the emotions for my ideas versus the ideas themself.

So, tell me, does that mean that those who listen to country music are more redneck? Just wondering.
As far as my experience goes...yes, I doubt loud music when your angry would really be helpful...it is only delaying an unavoidable break down...like the whole "Serenity Now" anger therapy...not really realeasing it just giving it more room to grow. That's what I do whenever I get upset...barricaded in my room I blare the loudest music I own...then once I have control of myself I put on some soft emo stuff to calm me down...and sleep helps too.

But it is helpful. It's completely different from the "Serenity Now" With that you are suppresing your anger, pushing it deep down inside of you. By singing at the top of my lungs I am releasing my anger in the only conducive way I know. Usually, it's either that or I scratch someone and make them bleed. And it's not like I play, angry music. Usually, it's fun music, just turned up really loud. Although, I must admit, part of it for me is probably the fact that I have a hard time with emotions, other than like happiness. I hate to be angry or sad or upset so I try to get rid of the feeling as soon as possible. I'm not saying it's healthy. It's just the way I am.

And it's probably because you are playing fun music that it makes you feel better. The sound of other people enjoying themselves/their music can lift one's spirits as well. I myself use music as you do--to help myself feel better.

However, I usually dwell on the problem before or after (and usually in silence, so that I can think clearly with no influence from music), so that I do confront the problems or let out what I feel about the situation. The music is there, and I listen to it so that I don't let myself stay depressed. I remember the good things, and deal with the bad as they come.

'Fun' music can also give you energy--like in the study with the termites. The energy that you get from the music probably also lifts your spirits--tell me who doesn't feel better when they have more energy than when they have none! I think it's great that you have a good way of coping with stress biggrin just don't let your real feelings get lost if you think they aren't 'happy' enough. It's ok to get down sometimes!

Back to the beginning:

I really do believe that music does affect how we think and feel. My brother is a recent graduate with a double degree in Music and Psychology, and one of the reasons that he wanted to go into both is that he wanted to study the effect of music on the mind--especially in children. I think that he believes music helped him express himself when he was sick with cancer (he had a lot of problems through middle/high school because of it).

Sorry to cut off there, but I really can't think straight at the moment...

when I get really mad or pissed of I can turn on music get a pen and paper and make my anger turn into something that my character in a book would feel at a certain point and I find that if I dont put the music on it doesnt flow from my pen it stays insideand tears into me trying to escape

Socrates in Disguise
Music subconsciencly affects everything we do...mood, activity, energy, etc.

People who listen to a lot of emo music tend to be more depressed...Satanic rockers tend to be more ical...Fans of classical music tend to be more calm and relaxed...

Even termites will work faster or slower depending on the type of music that's playing...

I'll tell you this...music controls me. I use music to increase motivation, to calm me down after an argument, to rile me up before a street-match with my best friend. I even listen to music to make myself come out of a depression. Audioslave and Green Day works for that.

I listen to such a wide spectrum of music, and yes, when I'm angry, I do listen to loud music. It has the unique ability of draining me of energy, to the point where I don't have what it takes to be angry.

Funny how the same music affects people differently. My favorite band, The Berzerker, is the fastest heaviest band I've ever heard and most of their lyrics revolve around death and the stupidity of mankind... for me, the music is so fast and original that it really lifts my mood. 2 weeks ago I had a miserable day at work... and on my way home at lunch I popped in Berzerker and after just a few minutes I was suddenly happy and enjoying my day.

Meanwhile, the same band drives a lot of people insane. It's either too heavy for their ears or too fast for them to comprehend. Or they just don't like all the audio clips of morticians... so music is truly in the ear of the beholder. One man's music is another man's noise.

I've personally never heard of them, although they sound interesting. Nothing is too fast for me, since I listen to a band called As I Lay Dying, which produces reactions from others much the same as what you described.

Plus, I listen to Korn. Most people don't like that.

I'm not sure if this deserves a new thread or not, but I'd like to discuss the deep meanings people have found in lyrics of songs. Often times, I will be listening to a song I've heard thousands of times and then suddenly have a revelation of some deeper meanings within the lyrics. This is not always intended by the artist, but I am amazed every time it happens. Now, if I can think of a good example....

Okay, I thought of a simple one... which I actually learned from a History Channel commercial... the song "Ring Around the Rosies" that is sang by small children. For those of you in other countries, I'm not sure if you even have this song, so here is the lyrics:

Ring around the rosies
Pocket full of posies
Ashes, ashes
We all fall down!

This song is about the Bubonic Plague, which caused dark rings to appear all over your body. People believed that filling your pockets with flowers would ward off the disease. The bodies of the people who died from the disease were burned and the ashes would fall from the sky.

And to think such a gruesome song is sang by little kids in a game!! Hmm... I think I will have to make a short death metal version of this song. I know Korn already did Shoots & Ladders which has the song within it, but that's not exactly death metal. xd I'll be happy to post it when it's completed. mrgreen

I don't know, man. Korn may not be the heaviest, but Shoots and Ladders is on the edge...plus, the bagpipe intro...eerie. Truly eerie.

Well, if we're going to share other artists' work for deeper meanings...I've got a few tidbits from different songs that I love. The lyrics will be in red, and my comments in the middle will be in black. At the end, I'll put my general comments on the whole set.

Alice in Chains - Sludge Factory

You insult me in my home, you're forgiven this time
There's no pressure besides brilliance, let's say by day nine
F*ck!

[edit: Sorry, that's the first take from the Unplugged DVD...I just had to put that in.]

You insult me in my home, you're forgiven this time
Things go well, your eyes dilate
You shake, and I'm high?
Look in my eyes deep and watch the clouds change with time
Twenty Hours won't print my picture milk carton size

Alice in Chains - God Am

(Sure, God's all-powerful, but does he have lips?) (Whoa...)

Dear God, how have you been, then?
I'm not fine, f*ck pretending
All of this d3ath you're sending
Best throw some free heart mending

Invite you in my heart, then
When done, my sins forgiven?
This God of mine relaxes
World dies, I still pay taxes

Can I be as my God am
Can you be as God am

So Lord, I see you grinnin'
Must be grand always winnin'
How proud are you being able
To gather faith from fable

All this respect I'm giving
Shared strength acquired by livin'
All bloomin' life you're feeding
Can't hide sick ones you're weeding

Alice in Chains - Over Now

Yeah, it's over now
But I can breathe somehow
When it's all worn out
I'd rather go without

You know, it's been on my mind
Could you stand right here
Look me straight in the eye
And say that it's over now?

We pay our debt sometime

Alice in Chains - We Die Young

Watch where you spit
I'd advise you wait until it's over
Then you got hit
And you shoulda known better

And we die young
Faster we run

Alice in Chains - Sea of Sorrow

Mind, of destructive taste
I choose...to stroll amongst the waste
That was your heart
Lost in the dark
Call off the chase

Walls of thought, strong and high
As my castle crumbles with time...
I think of you
Oh, yes I do
Such a crime

You opened fire...and your mark was true
You opened fire...aim my smilin' skull at you
You opened fire...

I live tomorrow, you I'll not follow
As you wallow, in a sea of sorrow

Alice in Chains - Bleed the Freak

When the pig runs slower
Let the arrow fly
When the sin lies bolder
I'll pluck out thine eye

These stand for me
Name your God and bleed the freak
I like to see
How you all would bleed for me

Alice in Chains - I Can't Remember

Turn around you say
'Scuse the 'tude but I haven't eaten today
And my eyes are turning grey
What's your name?

I can't remember...I can't remember

Alice in Chains - Real Thing

I messed around as a little boy
I grew up, made the blade my new toy
Friends said boy, with what you screwin' around I said
Don't concern yourselves and just
Gimme another blast
Yeah

Under the hill, with just a few notches on my belt
Take it away, don't want no more
Even if you say just one more
I won't leave you alone

I grew up, went into rehab
You know the doctors never did me so good
That said son you're gonna be a new man
I said thank you very much and
Can I borrow fifty bucks?

I originally was gonna comment, but I wanted to double-check something, started reading about Alice in Chains, and got depressed. I was wrong anyway.

So form your own opinions, if you wish. Or just tell me I'm stupid. I don't care.

Ha ha... didn't expect to get the entire lyrics to an album with my last post! xd

And ya chose the unplugged album, which I'm not quite as familiar with. A friend used to torture the hell outta me with that cd at work. The music is good, the singing is great but he played it NONSTOP for about 3 months straight at work and I nearly strangled him over it. There are very very few cd's that I can handle nonstop like that, and Alice in Chains doesn't make any of them.

One great Alice in Chains song that is philosophical is their top 40 hit "Man in the Box." There's so many contradictory phrases in there it makes my head spin a bit. It appears to be about a man who just died and is in his coffin? Maybe eluding to being "saved," as well. Couldn't quite say. Maybe it's just about how ******** up on heroine he was at the time and couldn't escape.

Sorry, not energetic enough to post the lyrics of that song.

Well, since I have to be at school to read this thread now, I'll just post the lyrics for it.

I'm the man in the box
Buried in my s**t
Won't you come and save me?
Save me...

Feed my eyes (can you sew them shut?)
Jesus Christ (deny your maker)
He who tries (will be wasted)
Feed my eyes (now you've sewn them shut)

I'm the dog who gets beat
Shove my nose in s**t
Won't you come and save me?
Save me...

And I enjoy Unplugged...having all of Alice in Chains' original stuff tends to lean me towards something different.
