The saddest for me was the death of Tamahome's family. More so in the manga. The anime moved so quickly into an action scene that it lost some of the sorrow for me.

Transciences of a Water Mirror (Chichiri/Hikou conflict) was sooo sad for me...*starts sobbing at the memory* Not to mention Mizu Kagami playing at the end...GAH! So emotionally draining! MY POOR CHIRI-KINS!!! crying I heart you anyways! *insert glomp of death here*
Hotohori, Nuriko, and Chiriko's deaths (in that order) really pushed up the bawl-fest at my house. *sigh* So much sadness. crying crying

I haven't read Hotohori's death, but it was really sad in the anime. As for Chiriko, I found his death sad in the manga (especially the reactions of Mitsukake and Tasuki) but not as much in the anime. His character never really developped far in either form, but his role seems especially insignificant in the anime. (No offense to any Chiriko fans)

I would have to say that he most emotional parts were:
1. When Tamahome found his family murdered: I have seen it plenty of times and I still cry crying
2. When Nuriko dies; 'Nuriko-chan' has to be one of my all time favorite characters, the frist time I saw "Nuriko..." I almost broke the TV eek
3. When Tatara and Suzano die and are reunited in death heart heart heart it was just so cute!!

The most emotional parts for me when i was watching the dvds was:
1. When Tamahome's family was killes by Suboshi
2. When Nuriko died. I cried so much when he died. Damn you Ashitare!!
3. When Chiriko died. I prayed for him after ward.

Rihga "Transciences of a Water Mirror" (Chichiri & Hikou) was both my favourite episode and the most emotional for me. No question. I've seen it about seven times, and I've cried each time. So it definitely wins. But Nuriko's death and the death of Tamahome's family... those were pretty bad, too.

It was more of a combination of all the deaths for me. I recently got the complete Fushigi Yuugi DVD set for my birthday, so my brother and I started watching like.. 7+ episodes a night XD Starting after Nuriko's death, people just start dropping like flies o.o
We counted 16 main people to begin with.. and we just started counting down XD
"Oh.. there goes Nuriko.. 15.. oh wait, no.. 14 now.."
I think we got down to... 5 I believe it was.. and that was really sad. But then the OAVs messed up our counting skills and confused us o.o;;
