It was a lovely day, the sun warm on her back, and the old queen laughed as her mate licked at her ear. Joy and a sort of ease lay over her, something rarely seen save for when she was with him. With him, the stress and, yes, even burden of ruling was lifted. With him she was just herself, no worries or cares save for those of how to enjoy being with him.
His question brought a smile to her maw as she dropped her own red eyes to the path, studying it as she thought. Oh, the things she would love to do... but couldn't. That thought put a damper on her, though she shrugged it off. Hmm... what could they do, that wouldn't tax her too much?
"If I had my strength again, I would challenge you to a romp in the wateringhole." She chuckled softly as she walked along, gently brushing his shoulder with her own. "As it stands, I suppose I shall settle for a nap under a shady tree, and this walk with you." Her tail swung lazily behind her as they walked, the small beads of her necklace letting out a soft rythmn of clicks as she moved.

-His auburn tail swayed lightly back and forth, eyes keyed on Sarabi as he awaited her words, mulling them over in his head as they finally came forth.
He'd have given anything to let her run and romp again. But she knew that quite clearly, and there was no use dragging along the sad fact any further on their golden day together. So instead he turned his attention to the later, laughing just a little as he answered.- "Well I for one quite like napping. And away from the den, hidden away beneath our own tree I imagine we'll be quite undisturbed."

Sarabi laughed softly as she slowed her walk, compensating for the heaviness that had come into her breathing. Her bright eyes scanned the savannah for the tree they would be needing, sweeping lightly over the watering hole just ahead of them. There were a few trees scattered here and there around it, it shouldn't be hard to find one to suit them.
"Come, dearest." She said between heavy breaths. "Lets cool our throats with a nice drink before we find our hideaway. It'll help us sleep I think... Though I sleep like a cub whenever I lie by our side, beloved."

-He slowed instinctually, his own paws and stride withdrawling to closer smaller steps as she did, eyes following her own to the apperance of the watering hole. His tongue was dry, the soft heat of the day working it's way on him, but reguardless, he'd have needed no guidance other then Sarabi's words.
Simply nodding, he labored in the slower steps as they drew nearer to the small oasis, chuckling softly at her words as he replied whistfully.- "I recall the days when you WERE little larger then a cub love. When the world seemed so much larger and more complex."
-Pausing gently, he offered a question tenderly, trying not to let curiousity and ideal thought come off as regret for certainly it was not.- "Have you ever wondered.. what would have become? Had things worked out as they were planned? With my brother as the king?" -Gently his mind twisted around the thought. Certainly.. he couldn't imagine her actually loving his brother.. not as she loved him.. right? They were a match that far surpassed the simpleness of mere arranged 'love'.-

As they approached the watering hole, the question he posed took her by suprise. Bright eyes turned to gaze on him curiously, and she paused for a moment in thought. What would it have been like? She'd have been Taka's mate, not his... her children would have been Taka's as well. Her mind rebeled against the very thought of not being with her love, but she forced herself to give his question the thought it deserved.
"I... I don't think things would have been as good as they are now. Taka was always the cool, calculating sort. He wasn't as warm and loving as you are. Certainly, I wouldn't have found in him what I found in you." She smiled at her King, feeling almost young again, when she had first become his mate and the world had been spread out before their paws. "And while I would have been his queen, I think something would always have been missing for me... and some part of me would always have seen it in you. And what do you think, my love? If you hadn't been matched with me, what sort of a mate do you think you would have taken? Would you have taken Sarafina maybe, or Wingu? Both were fine lionesses..." The thought of him with one of them, even her best friend, gave her old heart a little pang. He was hers, and she his... it was hard to imagine it any other way.

-There was joy and pain in the words, the king relishing in such compliment and loving conjecture in her answer, at the same time trying to shake the image from his mind as it rolled in.
And he took a long moment to think over her question, as she had his. But in truth it didn't take that long at all TO know the answer. After all, he'd always fancied her, and while in these days he might be wise enough to know better, in his younger days it was emotion and youth that had driven him.- "If Taka had taken over the throne as planned, and taken you as his mate, I most certainly would have left the lands."
"Not for want of his kingdom.. I'd never begrudged him that, until the time came that he hadn't stood up for it. But more for selfishness. Wingu and Sarafina are fine lioness'. If you were contented in the lands, then I would have no reason to stay in my homeland. I'd have wanderered."
-Eyes drifting softly with the thoughts that puddled after the statement he wondered if he'd have been able to stay away. Responsibility and his brother's intitlement might have done it.. But really.. could he have been happy somewhere else? Oh what a different future that would have made.. He wondered how large of a scar that might have left.. how much would be different, if his brother and bride were the rulers, and he instead were simply a rogue out of place.
It was so inanely foriegn that it was hard to grasp, and when finally he looked at her again, he nudged his maw against her delicately beautiful neck.- "I have doubts that even if I walked as far as the land streched would I find anyone to be even half as contented with. I don't know whether I'd even have been able to stay away after long. Bless the stars and our ancestors that fate as touched us how it has. And let us have this life of bliss and bounty instead of what could have been."

Sarabi smiled with warmth and love as she ducked her head, feeling his touch against her neck. He was always such the romantic, one of the things she loved best about him.
"You are right, my king. Things turned out for the better, and there is really no use in looking back." She raised her old head proudly, a little more energy in her tired limbs. "Come, lets get a drink for our dry throats." She chuckled as she struck out at a better pace, stopping only when her paws touched the muddy bank of the wateringhole.
Bending low, the queen crouched to lap at the water, soothing a thirst that was almost omipresent these days. Knowing it was the only water she'd get till tomarrow, she drank deep, trying to fill her belly with as much as she could. It wasn't much... but she would go on living another day, at her kind's side. She cast a glance at him as she finally lifted her head, water in sparkling drops on her chin, and sighed with content.

-The hints of a chuckle touched him, taking her words as a mild jab at his often long-windedness, though even if it had been it wouldn't have bothered him. He quite certainly knew how often he used words and many of them. Continuing his slow place until they'd reached the watering hole he lowered his head and let the cooler water sooth his throat.
He did not need to worry as much as she, as he could return himself later if need be. So his attention focused mainly on his partner, lapping the water almost as an afterthought. And when finally her head lifted, maw sparkling with the crystal droplets, the mild rubbling of a very baratone purr could be heard.-
"Would you like to linger about the water for a little longer dear? Or are you ready to lounge out in the shade?" -His eyes wandered momentarily, trying to spy a good spot to rest.-

Sarabi grinned suddenly, feeling playful. Once slender paw lashedout to strike the water with what faded strength she had, and sent it fountaining towards him. His distraction came at the perfect moment for her mischief, and she laughed brightly as she shook her paw free of water.
Ah, to be young again. Sitting here reminded her of all the times they'd played in the water. Good thoughts, good memories. She pushed herself for a bit of extra energy, heedless of her current limits. She wished with everything in her to be what she once was, and despite her weakness, she tried to recapture even a tiny portion of that old vitality. He deserved that, even if it wouldn't last long, and might strain her more than was wise. He didn't need to know the toll it took on her flagging reserves, either.
So, the old queen shifted up onto her paws and backed up as she laughed, moving carefully out of splash-range.

-Mind already settled on the thoughts and motions of rest, Mufasa was quite taken aback as suddenly the spray of water landed upon him. But it didn't take more then a moment for that smile to form on his maw lifting himself with a chuckle before letting out a purr that almost sounded like a growl, if one imagined hard enough.- "Ohh yeah?"
-Playfulness overwhelming his worry for the moment, he splashed at the water mildly, sending a spray that missed her thanks to her distance, before gently he crouched, giving her a moment to ready herself before he would 'give chase' to the beautiful creme figure.- "Two can play at that game darling."

Sarabi tossed her head as she laughed brightly, red eyes wide and sparkling. Oh dear... She'd ment for a splash fight, but it seems he had another game in mind now, as his return volley had landed far short of its target.
Soft laughter shook her sides as she kept backing up, one step after another, her eyes on her long-time mate. Oh, she'd missed this... the thrill of a game with the one she loved like no other. The excitement of it had her heart fluttering like a bird inside her frail chest, and she very nearly forgot about everything but him.
Wooden necklace bouncing against her chest, the old queen kept moving back, watching Mufasa carefully for any sign that he was about to 'attack'.
