ZonkotheSane not all synagogues are so thorough or judgmental with their finances. Then that not very good... The main reason our shul posts the financial list is because "Vi'hayitem Nikeyim" - And you shall be clear... (from being suspected).

(from being suspected). one of the local ones (i refuse to associate myself) pays a salary to a rav who is hardly ever there, and who also works as a menahel in a local yeshivah. which i happened to have attended. the shul also has the most ridiculous board politics. they once turned down a donation from a respected member of the community because they didn't want the philanthropist "getting involved".

Our mirkazi shul turned down a donation of a million dollars (Yes, a million dollars) because the man wanted them to append his name to the shul's title. Hmmmm... confused

My current Temple is very generous and good, but my old one... Oy veigh, they were rude and expensive. Infact, we're still getting bills from them. But that synagouge had alot of rich members, so I don't know if that contributed to the craziness, but you never know.
I think Jews donate to charity as much as your average Christian/Buddhist/ Muslim. But then again, there's always room for improvement when it comes to the good of the world...

Actually, Jews in the US apparently donate almost 10% of the nation's charitable giving, despite only making up 1.3% of the US population. I would guess that the statistics are similar in other places: we give ten times our 'fair share', when compared with others. We just don't always donate to specifically Jewish-run organizations or causes.

I always buy my friends dinner when they have no money; even if it means that I might not eat. I feel better donating my money. I also give to the homeless downtown. I always carry extra change incase I see them. Anywho, our shul holds a yearly raffle, and it's open to anyone in the town. $1 a ticket, tons of awesome prizes. The grand prize is $500k.

Giving out money as a raffle prize isnt really helping the stereotype go away -_-;;

I believe next year is the last year we'll have the raffle. sad Things are getting better down here. Not perfect; just better.
