Emerwyn did understand what he meant. In fact, she did feel very different growing up. She'd never attended public school. And when she did see other children, they did not interact much. Even when she got older, and moved to New York, things did not change. It was only with Jerrick that she felt truly comfortable with herself. That she truly belonged somewhere.
And, he was absolutely right about not truly being whole, as well. In becoming these creatures, they were losing parts of who they were originally. Emerwyn found herself forgetting things she'd known her whole life. Sometimes, there were moments where she'd forgotten who she was completely. She was only a deer.
She nodded in understanding. "No, I think that I know what you mean. We never will be ourselves completely again... But... we can do our best to hold on to that which we have left."

"If there isss anything left after all of thisss," he chuckled darkly. "I know I'm not who I uthed to be. But I can't really be my old ssself again, either. Maybe you can, though. Deer don't kill thingsss to eat."
His inner predator was itching to shine through, if he didn't get something in his stomach soon. A couple of fingers hooked the plate of meat and pulled it toward himself. He glanced at her, looking abashed. "Um... You don't mind if I...? I mean, I can wait."

Emerwyn's face grew sad. It was true; being a non-predator did mean that she would never have to kill to satiate her instincts. She would never have to become a murderer, on any level.
Her stomach felt a little sick at the prospect of his gorging of the meat, but the sooner the smell was gone, the better. After all, he was there first. "Oh, no, of course not! It is no problem at all. Please, feel free." She sipped her tea to block out the smell that would soon waft through even stronger than before. The herbal scent filled her nostrils, and though it did not taste quite the same as it used to, it was indeed a luxury now.

"If you're sure..." He noted the expression on her face. So this what what animals lacked - boundaries. It was only right to apologize for what he had to do. "I'm sorry."
Shakily, he began working on the steak, switching off between knife and fork. His left hand was still too large and awkward for utensils. The acrid smell of blood became strong, even for his unexceptional nose. He hoped that it would make him sick, that it would ignite in him some genuinely human feelings. It would mean he could turn away from doing this. Nothing of the sort seemed associated with the scent or taste. Rather, it brought to mind the contentedness of a successful kill. He felt fear sieze in his chest, directed no longer at the confused creature he was meant to become, but at himself. There was far less distinction now.
He put down his fork with a shaky hand. The instincts were quelled, but the taste was in his mouth. He'd never be able to wash it away! After dabbing at the many and elongated sides of his mouth with a napkin, he moved the blood-soaked plate off to the side and stared longingly at his glass of water. He wasn't about to degrade himself to lapping it up right in front of Emerwyn. He'd just have to wait it out.
"Um, ssso... how did end up here?"

Emerwyn smiled sweetly when he apologized. It really was sweet that he would do that. And she knew that he had to eat, and that he wouldn't have in front of her if he didn't have to.
She did her best to ignore the horrid scent of fresh death, by occupying herself with her tea. It didn't do much, but it was enough to keep her from retching all over.
What had now become light conversation, and was actually a good bonding question appeared. It was too close before, too painful. But, that was then. Zachary, though, would only be the third to hear what had actually happened.
"I suppose it started more than a year ago. Three months before I arrived here. A dear, dear friend of mine had... gone missing. On a plane to England, my old home. I remained in New York, trying to find him, whilst my friends searched in England. After a while, I had begun to lose hope. The police already had. Then, I received a phone call from England. I needed to go there, as soon as possible. I took a boat... Something went wrong... The ship sank. And I ended up here, the only survivor." She stopped to sip her tea. That was a suitably abridged version. If he cared to hear more, he only need ask.

"That'th horrible!" It sounded like one bit of bad news after another for this girl. "In the phone call, did they sssay they found your friend there, in England?"

"No. All Lyra said was that she had information for me, that she could not disclose on the phone... I still do not know what it was she needed to tell me."
A slow dawning expression came to Emerwyn's face. The books... what Jerrick was trying to tell her... Was it possible that Lyra and Ketta had already known, and were trying to tell her? But - how could that be possible?

"Ahh..." He trailed off, unsure of what to say. He knew little about her problem, and it was best he didn't get involved, as all he'd be able to add was an assurance that she'd never truly find out the answers to her questions. He wasn't that mean.
He was surprised to see her expression get more knowing rather than depressed. Speculating was useless. "Er, did you remember sssomething?"

Emerwyn blinked a few times and looked up at Zachary. A similar thing had also happened last time they'd met. That dawning comprehension. Goodness, what must the man think of her?
"Yes - I suppose... Though, it is more of a realization. Something I feel I should be glad for." She smiled. "Yes. It is a good thing. Thank you, Zachary."

"You're welcome," he blinked, confused. This was getting awkward in a familiar way. He glanced down at the blood-strewn plate, and grabbed it. He stood up suddenly. "I should go! I, uh, have to look for thomeone. A friend of mine. I don't know where they've gone."
He made for the door, bussing his plate on the way. Another minute longer, and he might have caught her crazies.

Emerwyn sighed and rested her hand on her hoof, an odd smile on her face. She was beginning to get used to it. But, she couldn't help but feel a little sad that it was so difficult to have a normal conversation with anyone. Anyone other than people who were as "crazy" as her.
But this of course, was the least of her concerns. Despite the fact that Lyra and Ketta may have already solved some of the mystery, Emerwyn knew that they would still be missing one piece - and unless they got a similar note from Jerrick - it was not likely.
She sat and finished her tea, her eyes faraway, in England.
