I don't think they were adopted because Kia was talking about their father purposing in the first movie crying I wish they would mention Kagome's dad in the later episodes unless he was already mentioned

He died because if he did get a divorce then Kagome would be old enough to remeber because she has a little brother and he would get visitation. In episode 47 is the only time her father is metioned as her mom flashes back to his prepose. When she did she seemed as if she was holding on to it.
