We roll step too. However, because everyone here (in California) is getting competitive, we're incorporating flutter runs, jazz runs, dances with our instruments, percussion features...etc. This year, we're doing so much follow the leader stuff and choreography because our first movement's called...Snakes. Snaking everywhere on the field in arcs...
Bands have now moved past the roll step and on to choreogrophy, I suppose. Wonder what's next.

we're a show/football band, sadly. we roll step, but the music we play is for crowds, not competitions. every year we have a drumbreak and a dance we do, plus we have a pom team, which SCREAMS football band. the past few years we've been doing shows such as the music of the dave matthews band and the music of chicago, crowdpleasing music. we do go to competitions, mcba and the like, but we score very poorly and it sucks. sad next year we're getting a pit, though, so maybe our bd will decide to do a more competition oriented show next year. so far i'm hearing we're doing west side story.

My band is a tradtional military marching style to and we are 1 out 2 in the state who are still like that. Everyone else is a show band. We don't have flag twirls or anything like that and the grass does get torn up really fast. It takes about a whole year for it to actually grow back. lol.

In our marching band, we march 8 to 5. That's where it takes 8 steps to go 5 yards. It's really easy, but it's hard at the same time. We must lift our legs in order to take a "22 and a half inch" step.

We have to Pro-Grass stuff so we don't have to worry about killing it. lol.

I'm going to quote my BD: "Guide right and lift your legs! Go back and do it again!! Welcome back to day one of band camp!" We all groaned. But then, we switched sides of the field, and we rocked. The end.

we're a non competitive band, condsidering that we're really good. we do slides, pop-ups, and dance in the middle of the last of our three. and we don't have to do that thing where you lift you leg up in the air, i think someone called it a chopped, we march more like walking but in time (or the BD WILL make sure you don't have kids) we marched in disney world
in the spectrolight parade
in the magic kingdom
the best parade in disney, no joke, most competitive parade to get into. twas AWSOME (though i kept falling and tripping in the trolley tracks sweatdrop blaugh )

We roll-step. T.T It's sooo boring. I miss my high school band so much... it just doesn't feel like a marching band without high-stepping! It feels like a concert band decided to get up and walk around a little!

Popoff_the_Magnificent I'm just a high school band. We do regular old roll-step on the beat, but we always have a high mark time visual in our show. High step is like... wierd. Sounds like a 70's core kinda thing. Personally, I'm glad that most cores kinda evolved past the high mark time thing. *shudder* *points and dances at your siggy* PICK ME! I'm a PR and Cavies whore.
