And to anyone (anywhere, not just here) that tries to defend their lack of wanting for music theory by bringing up Hendrix: sure, he wasnt the best at theory, but even he was held back by this.
hendrix was a soulful player, but i think he is REALLY overrated. he just did somthing blues and jazz players had been doing for years, and used distortion. dont get me wrong, he was innovative with his writing. but it wasn't like he INVENTED distortion. in my oppinion guys like Allen Holdsworth and Eddie Van Halen were much more groundbreaking . they probably didn't make up the techniques that they are famous for, but they did things with them that made playing easier and more virsitile. sorry for the off topic. theory isn't always a must, but it makes it easier to improvise, and describe things being played. inspiration can strike more often and with better results if you know theory too, since you know how you can build on your idea.
