Gallina
Alternate dimension makes sense to me, items and all. Cyan would have had to shove a whole crapload of item's under his pillow.
That would be uncomfortable... sweatdrop

I think the only answer for the point of "a big train" would have to be that it is a phallic symbol! How? Uh, it's a secret... ninja

Because a hero always has a gigantic phallus unless having a small one is on his list of weaknesses (Urashima Keitaro, Love Hina).

Alright, this started out as the reply to the Magimaster Poobert, but got so long I had to cut it into sections for organizational purposes.
-----

Symbolism and the Big Train, a Boberyno exclusive:

The train is obviously a phallic symbol. Not just becuase of the obvious length, width and firmness that are all characteristic of a phallus, but because of the environment. This long, hard train rolls smoothly under the canopy of the forest. Seems that the forest itself represents the covers of a bed, or the concealment of clothes.

They meet loads of people who are "on their journey to the other side." Other side? Sounds remarkably like Cyan's train fantasies have a lot to do with him being a closet homosexual, especially considdering that all of the passengers are either spectres, who's features are concealed under hoods, or men. His only required companion on this train is also a man. They even go to dinner together while on the train (so romantic!).

Now, the singular symbolic event that proves the whole Big Train scenario is just Cyan's mind coming to terms with his homosexuality is the battle at the head of the train (very crude pun there). There, Cyan and Sabin beat the bajeesus out of the train(phallus). Once they've sufficiently beat it, the train "boss explodes" on the screen with a great commotion and diminishes until it is out of sight. This obviously is a representation of Cyan and Sabin's experience while lovemaking.

After the "battle," they leave the train, and Cyan remembers his wife and is filled with guilt. He's ashamed that he couldn't express his true feelings and married her to cover what he thought was a weakness. He did care for her and his son, but he did not love her. As he rushes to explain this to her, the apparition leaves him and he is alone, ashamed and remoursful.

Thus begins the new life of the Cyan, out of the closet at last with his new love Sabin.

If you don't believe Sabin is gay, examine the evidence in the next post!

The above interpretation of the train only really works if it's all in his head, or symbolic of the real journey through the forest. The latter only works if Sabin is gay, so here's why Sabin is gay:

1.) He didn't want to be King of Figaro. This may not seem like evidence at first, until you considder the why. Kings need to marry women to continue the line, that's the way it works. Sabin, disinterested by the prospect of romancing and making love to a woman, instead opted for the freedom of remaining a prince. No longer bound by the ties of the royal spotlight, he exiled himself to live and train with Duncan the martial artist.

2.) Vargas and Duncan. Sabin lived with Duncan for many years and they eventually became lovers. Learning of this, Vargas assumed that Duncan would make Sabin his successor and leave him with nothing. Vargas, in a fit of jealous rage, seemingly killed Duncan and fled to the mountains. Sabin, his lover dead, tracks down Vargas and kills him.

3.) Cyan and Sabin's trip. Two martial artists, they were made for each other. They meet and instantly agree to travel to Narshe to help the Returners. After consumating their love in the forest, they adopt the 16 year old Gau.

4.) Duncan is alive. When they find him in the World of Ruin, both he and Sabin are overcome with joy. So happy are they, that Duncan immediatly takes Sabin behind the cabin and teaches him the "Bum Rush." If that name isn't self-explanitory, I don't know what is.

Now you might argue that Duncan was married. However Duncan, as a respected member of the community, had to keep up the appearance that his social status required of him. To this end he publicly married his wife while privately engaging in meaninful relationships on the side, the last of which (as far as we know) was with Sabin.

As a side note, Sabin's appearance: mullet, sleevless shirt, bodybuilder. Stereotype? Yes. However, stereotypes aren't always unfounded. I'm not saying I buy into this, it's just more circumstantial evidence to corroberate my case.

Wow, that went on a lot longer than I thought it would. I love finding symbolism that isn't there, I really do. Hope you all enjoyed that, and I'm sorry if I've poisoned the whole train thing for anyone. I don't actually think this, it's just fun to speculate about.

Oh, and praise be to my superior, Magimaster Poobert, for giving me the inspiration for this wondrous load of bollocks. Let's give 10% credit to her, because without her, I never would have thought of the Train as a phallus. It's like I'm a charity performer, putting on a show for an elitist club... I should accept donations for my cause!

If by 'strong and compelling' you mean 'scarring and horrifying', then yes!

I'd already had enough of Mash and Edgar homoerotica. I mean, they're brothers, for the love of pete!

Actually, I never implied anything about Sabin and Edgar... I always though of Edgar as a straight man. Nowadays I sort of look at him like Miroku from Inu Yasha. He's got nothing to do with the Cyan/Sabin relationship.

Bravo Boberyno! I couldn't have done it better myself.
Oh, one thing. You didn't mention that the forest has "bushes" in it. I'm sure that this can tie in as well.
Remember everyone! 10% of your laughs are belong to me.
Bum rush...lol... xd

Well, if nothing else, Poobert is certainly full of bollocks XD

But really, doesn't it always come down to sex in the end?

As a firm non-believer in the validity of psychological theories and psychotherapy, I'd have to say "to hell with Frood." Not everything comes down to sex, but he did look cool. People like Frood are the reason I go for Eastern Phylosophy. Everything in Europe and the middle east is always "this is the way it is, there be no other." I just don't like that.
