Hearing the pounding on the door, Kanth groggily made it downstairs, more than a bit tired. She had been resting a lot more lately due to her lack of power, but managed to get up for such an occasion as this. Wrenching the door open, she grimaced at the doctor standing at the foot, looking all official in his white labcoat.

"Do you even realize what ungodly time it is?" She slurred, squinting at the visitor. Kanth was not known for being a morning person.

"I do." Murmured the doctor, adjusting his stethoscope and starting to open his labcoat.

"Whoah, whoah, I don't need a show-" Stopping in mid sentence, Kanth's eyes widened as she saw him pull out a card, holding it out to her, to take. He was oddly much too calm about the situation, and Kanth was instantly on alert, her eyes widening in alarm.

"What the hell is this? I don't take solicitors." Drawing back into her house, she started to shut the door, but was stopped by his foot in it (he grimaced badly).

"Miss... Ralavikanth. A shifter who killed many in her time. But was it self defense... or murder?" The woman stopped, her blue hair falling to her shoulders as her head whipped around to glare at the man.

"... what."

"Take the card, and drop by." He let the card fall to her feet, turning and walking away without even a glance back.

"Hey..." Her voice failed her; the doctor didn't need to turn around to hear her pick up the card and take a long look at it, closing the door in disbelief.

"Quaint," He then murmured as soon as he had left hearing range, turning and glancing back at the mansion she lived in. Idly, he wondered if she was trapped in there as he was trabbed in the lab, as well.

The little girl was precious.

She had instantly reminded Kanth of a jellyfish; a blue jellyfish, to be exact. Grey eyes stared at her a bit listlessly, before she stretched out her arms, wishing to be taken from the doctor's hands. Complying instantly, Kanth took her and the girl seemed to melt into her arms, legs dangling as she rested her chin on the former shifter's shoulders.

"What's the fish doing in her stomach?" Kanth asked after a long moment of silence, pulling the child away and setting her down on the floor, reaching out to poke her stomach rather gently, just out of curiosity.

"Adit." The toddler muttered softly, glancing down and poking right where Kanth had, then reaching up and nibbling on her first finger.

"You might want to feed her fish food, if you're worried about the fish staying alive." The doctor murmured, turning around and giving a cough.

"Is that a joke?" Kanth raised an eyebrow, tempted to grin, but was still rather miffed about the incident just a few days before.

"That calculation is up to you. Enjoy your new child." Gathering his papers and stacking them together in a neat order, the doctor nodded his head to Kanth before taking his leave. She ignored him for the moment, instead kneeling down at eye level with the kid.

"I'm guessing you're a jellyfish..." She murmured, now taking the time to grin. "Do you have a name?"

The girl stared blankly at her.

"I'm Kanth... you...?" Kanth pointed at the girl, hoping to whoever was listening that she was getting through.

The girl, seeming to understand, pointed at her stomach again and brightly exclaimed, "Fssssh!"

"Okay... I'll name you later." Picking her up, Kanth adjusted her so she was hanging off her shoulders; the feeling was unnerving at first, but once Kanth got used to it, it was rather soothing. Almost like a gel pack on one's neck on a hot summer day. Soothing.

She kept telling herself that. Taking after the doctor in the act of leaving, Kanth took the jellyfish child with her, not at all minding the tight grip the girl had on her head.

... just like a gel pack.

Numbers Worksheet 1

"Okay, today we're learning numbers." Came the cheerful voice of Kanth, who sat next to the young girl with ease. An ice pack sat on the back of her neck, and Kanth really couldn't blame anyone else but herself, considering that tentacles did indeed sting like hell.

At least her throat hadn't closed like a normal human's would.

Producing a box of crayons along with a sheet of paper from numbers one to ten, she let the girl stare at them for a moment while she remained quiet.

The girl, seeming to oogle over the shape and texture of the crayons as soon as she picked one up, took the paper and started coloring. Coloring, coloring, coloring to calm herself, and also coloring to find the meaning of these shapes!!

Once she had finished, she held it up proudly, as if that was what Kanth expected her to do, then waited for the woman to explain it to her. She had done good, she hoped!

"It looks good!" Kanth smiled, drawing closer and pointing out the first number. "This is... one. The next one is a two... I think that's how old you are. Your age, how long you've... existed?" She colored slightly, unsure of how better to explain it, but at least... she was trying!

The jellyfish girl found this all very fascinating, and listened to the woman with rapt attention. She'd promised herself she'd learn it all!

Apparantly, teaching the jellyfish girl numbers first wasn't that great of an idea - she didn't look that well after a while (though she did seem to catch on quickly), and soon seemed out of it completely. Reaching forward, Kanth worriedly pressed her hand against the girl's forehead, then withdrew it as she stood with purpose.

Picking the girl up, Kanth strode straight to the bathroom and gently dumped the girl in, quickly turning on the water and filling it with lukewarm water. "Geez, you're as dry as sandpaper." She murmured softly, gaining a tired look from the girl. "Be right back." Exiting, Kanth glanced around and finally spotted a towel, snagging it, then taking a detour to the library. She gathered a book about jellyfish (with speedy help from the library's resident ghost), and walked back into the bathroom within just a few minutes' time, swinging a chair around and sitting on it sideways.

"Feeling better?" Kanth asked, receiving only a smile from the girl in response. "Well, that's good." Opening the book up, Kanth flipped through it until she came across the article she wanted; Moon Jellies. Or Jellyfish, if one wanted to be specific.

"A. aurita first starts out with an ovum from a female medusa and a sperm from a different medusa to form a zygote. The zygote then turns into a blastula, then gastrula, and then planula." Kanth spoke aloud, mainly to herself. "Hmmm... Aurita, Medusa..."

Splashing occurred once Kanth had spoken the name aloud, and the girl perched on the edge of the bathtub, smiling from ear to ear. Kanth, immediately getting the hint, tilted her head. "Medusa? You like that name, don't you. I suppose we'll call you that, then." Sighing, Kanth leaned back in the chair and read further, all the while keeping a watchful eye on her new girl.

She seemed much better now that she was in water. Silently, Kanth decided to watch her at all times to make sure she always had a bit of water nearby.

It was a neccessity; Kanth wouldn't have it any other way.

RP; Cody, Medusa, and Indigo

The park was simple enough. A large field for older kids to make use of, a few soccer goal posts stood netless towards the sides, a concrete square closer to the actual play park itself with a pair of hoops with chain nets. A small playing field for horse shoe just over near the sand pit. For the younger children there was a play park complete with a wooden play castle. Two large slides on either side, climbing ropes and monkey bars, a jungle gym all padded with rubber chips in case of spills and slips. It was early afternoon, cooling down from the summer heat and already the crickets had begun chirping, here and there a firefly jumped into the air with a spark of yellow light.

Winter sat on a nearby bench sitting under a cherry tree, it was late in the summer so most of the fruits had fallen and squished along the ground, rotton or nothing left but dried husks all over the bench, the playplace, and the ground itself. The fruits still hanging from the trees were over-ripe and hardly fit for eating.

Nearby, Cody pulled himself up on the play ropes, his hooves clammering on the wooden notches in the side of the play castle. It was more difficult without actual feet or claws, but his upper body strength made up for it well enough, "Up da rope! 'Ey Mama lookit!"

Winter looked up from her sketchbook, giving the boy an approving nod, "Good job, Cody... now don't be doing that in the house."

"D'awww man."

"We can't stay for long, but we'll make it last, okay?" Kanth whispered softly into Medusa's ear, giving her a hug before setting her down on the ground.

The jellyfish girl looked all around with her grey eyes before they settled on another, and her hands clasped together in front of her face, both of her index fingers pointing up. She seemed to think for a moment before running up to the bull boy, content with just staring... and observing.

Kanth remained close behind, rather protective of her.

Cody pulled himself up to the last knot, swinging his hooves out to catch the platform. "Booyyy Howdy." He thew his arms up, giving a trimphant whoot for his own small victory. Sure it was a lot of show, but what was the good of being such a stud if he couldn't proclaim it now and then. Cody tilted his hat up, making his way over to the larger of the two slids on the play castle. Yeah he was bad- taking on the -big- slide.

"G..na... hrt sself." Medusa pointed out, pointing her translucent finger at the boy as she remained absolutely calm. Glancing down at her feet then, she made a face as she picked up a foot, staring at the dirt that stuck to the bottom.

"I..." Kanth started to say, then shook her head, feeling as if she needn't say anything at all. Medusa was smart, she'd give her that.

One of the little cow ears perked, twisting around towards the source of the new voice. Cody soon followed, turning over a shoulder with a wide grin. He was quiet for a moment, getting the girl a look over. What kind of critter was she? She was new that was for sure. Not like Alaqua at all. "Hmm..." He turned around, putting his hands on his hips, "Howdy there! New in the neighborhood?"

"Ssspose." Said the girl, who seemed as if she was just learning to sound out words and the like. Her eyes left the dirt on her foot, and she now stared at the other with curiosity, tilting her head.

Cody nodded, "That's alright, I'm real good at showin' the new kids what's what." He stepped back onto the slide, turning himself around to slide down it, landing with a bit of a jump from where the slide ended down to his hooves, stirring up the plastic padding chunks. Standing himself up, Cody folded his arms accross his chest, "'Name's Cody an' when I grow up I'm gonna be th' best ar-" He paused, catching a dirty look from Winter, "Er... booty whomper 'round."

Medusa said nothing, now taking the time to walk around him rather carefully, examining silently. She didn't seem all that outgoing, or exciting for that matter, but she was interested in meeting others that were the same as her, yet a bit different.

"Yu haff dokter tew?"

The bull boy puffed himself up as big as he could, flexing his arms as she gave him a look over. Yeah, he was a show off... but he'd seen it on TV. If a girl looked, he had to look cool and do that stupid flexy thing to make his arms puff out more. "Doc'? Me? Naw, I don't need one. I don't need nothin!"

If Medusa wanted to smack her forehead then, she would have. But, she was still uncomfortable speaking with people she didn't know, and merely shook her head, letting out a small sigh.

"No?" Cody tilted his head to the side, putting a hand on his chin. Well then what was she trying to say, "Ya gotta speak up, try talkin' more like me if ya wanna ask a question. C'mon, spit it out!"

"Wy?" Medusa asked, putting her foot down and setting out her jaw. "Wy got ta akt liek yew?" She continued, putting her hands on her hips. She wasn't going to take someone else's orders, when she just wanted to be herself!

Indigo was never going to call the woman taking care of her "Mom". Mom was in the hospital and feverish and sick and getting worse every day, but even if she died, Indigo wasn't going to call the other woman "Mom". Not even if the woman came running after her on seeing that she and Citrine had snuck out of their old beat-up rundown house and made a run for the D Corp headquarters. Not even if she brought them both back with tears and apologies. Not even if the big scary cat-thing that followed that woman everywhere tortured Indigo, or worse, Citrine--she'd never call the woman "Mom". Ever.

The velvet worm was in a black mood as she shuffled through the grass on the far side of the playground. Her dragon was uncharacteristically quiet, plodding along in Indigo's wake, its copper color dull with scales scratched and frayed from overgrooming. Indigo herself wasn't looking all that great, with her hair and clothing mussed and her color poor. The unhappy pair made their way slowly toward the sound of voices, headed not for the other children but for the cherry tree. It probably wouldn't support her weight, but the overripe fruit and any insects it happened to have in it would make for a decent treat.

She needed a treat right now. She headed straight for the tree, paying no attention to the younger children. Citrine was a little more alert, and seated herself off to one side of the dispute, tail curled around her forepaws. She looked first at Medusa, then at Cody, before raising a paw in a feeble wave. Indigo, meanwhile, had hooked her upper hands around a branch of the cherry tree and planted her feet against it, using her lowers to shake loose what fruit she could get at.

"Git what yer sayin'... if ya talk funny no one'll git it n' you'll get people all confused n' stuff." He shrugged, "People say I talk funny too but they know what I'm tryin' tah say. Just gotta find a way to talk like you in a way that doesn't a'fuse everyone else, kay?" He paused, turning over to two more forms approaching, "Lookit that! Another dragon."

He waved enthusiastically as the two came, "Ey there ya two!"

Oh. So that's what he meant! She grinned and nodded, letting him know she understood. Following his gaze, she blinked at the newcomers and wandered over to them, awed at the dragon, as well as the... girl. Whatever she was.

"M'dusa!" She exclaimed, pointing at herself. The fish in her stomach did a summersault.

Oh, introductions. The young copper dragon drew herself up, giving a chough and then a quiet rumble. Was that supposed to be a name? She stopped and gave it a moment of thought, before trying again: "Cssitrrrine." Draconic mouths weren't precisely suited to human language, but she was learning!

It took Indigo a moment to realize she was being addressed. When she did, she glanced over her shoulder once...then looked back at what she was doing, holding the branch in two hands and using her other two to pick cherries off. "'M Indigo. That's Citrine. Hi, Cody, M'dusa," she said, barely loud enough to be heard.

A moment and two handfuls of squashy cherries later, she slid down the tree and turned to slouch against it. "You guys here to play in the park?" she said, trying to make some kind of conversation.

She had found the blue crayons. They were different colors, but she had taken extra time to find all of the different colors of blues she could find, and scribbled the letters in with the different shades. It didn't matter if it was the color or not; she was really fascinated with them, and couldn't be persuaded that easily to use any other colors.

Of course, she was still learning, but... she was stubborn. It was a nice relaxation from the park.

It had taken a good few hours of coaxing (along with the promise that Medusa could keep all of the blue crayons), but Kanth had finally gotten the girl to use other colors. So far, she had put words together for Medusa to sound out, such as 'cab' and 'dog', as well as providing images to go with. The most fascinating thing, however, was when Medusa came across the letter j; she marveled over it for a long while, and pointed at the animal that went with the letter.

"That's a jellyfish," Kanth explained, when given a curious look from the girl. "You're a jellyfish as well." She pointed at Medusa, her finger touching the girl's chest lightly. Medusa's finger followed hers, and she ran her translucent fingers down her slick skin. Eyes wandering back to the drawing, she gave a small smile to it and grabbed a blue crayon, making drawings around the 'j'.

"Gely. Gelfssh." And she continued on, coloring the rest of the letters on the page.

Ana stood outside of her house, bouncing from foot to foot, waiting to catch sight of the little girl that Mommy said was coming over. She was new to the corporation, and Mommy said that it was important that she met some new people, and was shown around. So, Ana waited for the girl and her mother to show up.

Mommy had been careful to warn her about the little girl, whom she said was called Medusa. Because her DNA was that of a jellyfish she had the ability to sting others, and jellyfish stings weren't fun, according to Mommy.

That aside, Ana was still looking forward to meeting a new potenital friend.

"Ay, bee, see, dee, eee, eff, gee..." Medusa practiced while she held her hand within Kanth's own gloved one, both of them walking towards the house. Medusa, for once, showed excitement on her face; last time she hadn't expected to meet someone before, but now it was just so... exciting!

It wasn't long before the chameleon girl came into sight, and Medusa slowed her pace, suddenly seeming very calm. In a subdued voice, she asked, "Yoo tink she liks meh?"

"You'll have to wait and see," Kanth smiled, waving as they walked closer.

A huge grin on her face, Ana returned the wave. " Hey-lo !" She shouted, at the top of her lungs. She skipped towards Kanth and Medusa, meeting them at the half-way point.

"I'm Anataela, " the chameleon girl announced proudly. " You're Medusa right ? Mommy says that you're new. " She seemed very proud to have introduced herself without parental assistance.

Afore mentioned parent assistance was now standing on the front porch, waving happily at the newly arrived pair.

"Yah!" Medusa exclaimed, glancing up at Kanth with a hopeful expression, before the shifter nodded.

"You can go and play while I talk with Anataela's mother." Beaming at the suggestion, Medusa skipped forward and stopped before the chameleon girl, clapping her hands together, but her expression remained oddly calm.

"Hiiiye." Medusa glanced to Kanth, who walked to the woman at the door. "Yew kno mye naem?"

RP; Etain and Medusa

Medusa was left to enjoy the pond by her lonesome self, not at all minding the quiet. Her feet splashed in the shallows as she glanced over to her guardian setting up the picnic table, the other residents of the house helping as well.

"Em r duks!" She exclaimed, mostly to herself as she pointed at the feathery fowl swimming and quacking just beyond the reeds. Idly, she wondered if she could swim with them, and comprehended on this, her finger resting on her lower lip as her eyes looked upwards.

Etain counted sloppily. He didn't have a very good head for numbers, with or without help from his fingers, and it didn't help that the fish he was trying to count kept swimming away and coming back and going about in circles... - made it pretty much impossible.

Not that he didn't try. Crouched at the edge of the pond, his little jellie sandals tucked under him, pale fingers gripping the rocks that lined the bank of the water, the little blonde boy frowned doggedly down at the koi fish flitting around.

"One, two, fou--aw, no movin'." No such luck. The fish, apparently, weren't interested in listening to a little boy with a horn growing out of his head (not that they would have listened even if he didn't have a horn).

Some distance away, the little boy's guardian had settled himself on a different picnic bench, and he seemed to be thumbing through a thick leather bound book.

"QUACK!!" Medusa called out, allowing a grin to cross her face as the feathery fowls took off into air, her own form leaning forward. The water felt very cool at this time of day, and Medusa was glad that she had spotted shade in such a place.

Tilting her head to the side, she spotted a very interesting other that intrigued her a bit, and stood up from the shallows, walking through the short reeds over to where he was crouching.

Apparently ducks didn't like loud noises like that. Two or three of them took swiftly to flight. So quickly, in fact, that it caused the little boy to start, rocking backwards and losing his balance until he sat, hard, on the grass and small stones lining the pond. For a few seconds, the blonde was absolutely silent as his little poof-ended tail wavered and twitched uncertainly this way and that, long ears flicking as if trying to determine what had just happened. Wordlessly, he craned his head back to watch the duck skitter up into the sky only to come back and land a few feet away in the grass.

"Duck," he noted darkly, frowning slightly. Now he'd lost count again. Lower lip poking out, Etain turned his attention back to the pond and to the fish - only to find someone wading through the shallow water in his direction. She was scaring all the fish away.

But! She was carrying a fish of her own; a goldfish, to be exact! And stomp stomp stomp she came through the water, before plopping down on the grass before the other, giving a small wave. "Hi!" She exclaimed cheerfully, trying out her smile again. It still needed work, but it was there.

Grey eyes widening, she looked him over and her mouth went into a small 'o' of awe, before she pointed at him. "Who're yew?"

Eyeing the little girl crookedly, Etain skittered away a little as she clambered out of the water and flopped down into the grass. Clearly curious, but a touch shy -- he'd had bad experiences meeting kids at ponds; the last one had poked him with a stick! -- the unicorn stuck the fingers of one hand into his mouth and began nibbling them in a compulsive, habitual fashion.

"Who're you?" he parroted back, clearly not prepared to answer her question unless she offered herself out first. Tovar said not to talk to strangers anyway, so unless she introduced herself he couldn't really talk to her, now could he?

--Did she have a fish in her tummy? Despite himself, Etain wiggled a bit closer in an attempt to get a better look at it.

"Medusa." She murmured softly, nodding for confirmation. "Dun haf a naym fer fshhh." The girl explained, poking her tummy as she stared at it. It seemed that she had an odd accent - either that, or a touch for pronouncing words the wrong way - but nonetheless, she wasn't really offended by anything.

Nodding slowly, Etain wiggled a bit closer. There, now he could properly examine that fish...in her tummy. Unconsciously, he touched his own stomach with his freehand through the cloth of his t-shirt. He couldn't see in his tummy...

How unfair!

"'M Etain," he offered at length, still clearly distracted by the fish. "How d'you feed it? -'Re you nekid? T'var says y'shouldn't go places nekid. Makes me put pants on alot. 'N shoes."

Naked? Medusa didn't really know the meaning of the word, whatever could he mean?

"I eet flayks," She grinned, pointing at the table where lots of food now sat. "Ka... Keenth... carries them." Gringrin. "But kan't steey owt of watyr far lawng." It had taken a while for Medusa to understand the concept that she couldn't stay from water for too-long periods of time, but it wasn't like she hated the water... she was, indeed, a jellyfish.

Etain glanced toward the picnic table that Medusa had indicated. Aaaah. Flakes. That made sense. "D'you live in th'bathtub?" That's the only place HE got wet - well, except when Tovar took him to the pool, but that was completely different. His hair and the end of his tail always turned green there and it took days and days to come out, even with Tovar scrubbing shampoo into his head (he didn't mind it, really; Tovar's nails felt nice on his scalp. He liked people tinkering with his hair).

"You should give 'im a name," the blonde noted, reaching out tentatively to motion to the fish wandering about Medusa's insides. "Sam 'er sumfink."

Medusa shook her head. "I tayk baaths oftyn." Glancing down at Etain's finger, she poked her stomach again. "Yoo kin touch et! Dosn't hert." Gosh, how she hated to pronounce words sometimes! It was really challenging to stumble over those last few, and she squinted an eye as she stuck out her tongue, shaking her head.

Cool. Features brightening visibly, he reached out and poked at the girl's stomach area, toward the fish swimming about the liquid-y substance that filled her. She sort of reminded him of a waterballoon. He wondered, suddenly worried, if she'd break if she flopped real hard against the ground. He decided not to worry about it, though. Not right now, anyway.

"Squishy." Like jelly or the ooze that had come out from under Michael's door on Tuesday. That stuff had been really, really gross... And had stained the bottoms of his socks. Tovar had been angry and said alot of mean things when he cleaned it up that he thought Etain couldn't hear.

"Yah." Medusa beamed, puffing her chest out proudly. The fish inside swam around, now interested in the boy's finger, its inner eyelids blinking. As it swam towards him, it didn't even seem to notice the barrier (Medusa's skin), and ran right into it.

... no one ever said fish were smart.

Etain pulled his finger back quickly, looking a little sheepish and guilt. "Oops." He hadn't meant to confuse the fish. Absently, he lifted a hand to rub his eyes. They sorta itched in a weird way. Etain didn't look back to the fish, instead casting his attention out across the surface of the pond.

"D'you have any cookies? At yer table." He could really go for some cookies. Tovar didn't usually let him eat too many, but... He glanced to the chestnut haired man at the other picnic table. Still had his nose in a book, it looked like.

"I spose we doo!" Standing up, the jellyfish girl took Etain's hand and steadied herself as if she was going to help him up. "M'shur Kant wuldn't miynd! Eet wit us?"

Hooray, cookies! Etain clasped her hand in his own, using the leverage of her weight to scrabble to his own feet. The little boy's tail flipped faintly back and forth, removing little bits of grass and dust that had settled in the blonde poof at the end. "'Lright," he chirped happily, leaving his hand settled comfortably in Medusa's before hopping toward the table that the little girl had pointed out earlier.

Upon approaching the table, Etain stopped so quickly his hand almost snapped out of Medusa's. For a few seconds, he stared at the woman near the table, and then quickly backpedalled, beginning to scratch compulsively at his arms. His eyes hit the ground with an almost audible thud.

"Ne'ermind," he muttered, chewing on his lower lip. "Don't really want any..."

"Not skary," Medusa murmured softly, glancing from Kanth to Etain, and then leaving Etain. "I go get yew wun!" And thus she marched to the table with purpose, climbing on the bench and eyeing over the plates. Vegetables, something gooey, something hot, something red... aha! Brown somethings, chocolate chip cookies. Kanth had forbid her from eating them due to her not knowing what would happen, but surely her getting them for someone else wouldn't harm anything! And, Kanth was so busy she wouldn't even notice! Inching towards the plate, Medusa smiled as she got one, then shimmied down to the ground again, running over to produce the cookie she had snagged.

"Fer yew!" She stated proudly, as if she had gotten some rare artifact in a tomb, such as Indiana Jones.

Etain watched Medusa nervously from the corner of his eye, keeping his attention plastered on the translucent girl and being extremely careful not to look at her guardian again. His skin still felt like little bugs were crawling under it. It made him sick to his stomach - almost enough so that he really din't want that cookie...

He found he was pretty much over it by the time Medusa got back with the sweet though; enough to eat the cookie, anyway (because what little kid in his right mind refused a cookie, crawly skin or no?). "Thankew," he said in a hushed tone, as if paranoid that if he spoke to loud Medusa's mom might see him and try to hug him. That happened alot and usually he didn't mind it, but when they were like that...

Etian shuddered and stuffed the cookie into his mouth.

"Yew okey?" Medusa asked, drawing by his side, her gray eyes wide with concern for the other. "Yew dun look weyll..." A frown covered her face as she peered close, her dreadlocks touching his shoulder. They were still very damp from the water.

"M'fine," he assured her around the mouthful of cookie. At least it tasted good; it would have been really unpleasant if he'd gone through all that only to have a foul tasting cookie.

"Yer all wet," he noted blankly, absently reaching up with one hand to brush along the damp splotches Medusa's hair had left on the fabric of his shirt. Absently, he stuffed the last of the cookie into his mouth, chewed, and swallowed hard to get it down. Despite himself, he shot a glance toward the picnic table. He immediately regretted it, turning his back quickly to the strange skin-crawling woman.

"Hafta bee." Medusa stated. "Get siyk if I'm noht." Reaching up, she ran her fingers over a dreadlock, staring crosseyed at it before concentrating on Etain again, the worried look returning. "Hay! Taaain, I werry." She tugged on his shirt, giving an almost pouty look.

Almost impatiently, the little boy brushed aside her hands. "M'fine," he insisted again, little tail flicking nervously back and forth. The boy's long ears twitched slightly. "C'n we go back there?" he asked, motioning quickly to the place on the pond's bank where they'd been before. "Or to T'var?"

Etain looked hopefully to his own guardian. The man's nose was still buried in whatever book he'd brought along with him.

"Ooooh," Medusa spoke, awed. She pointed at Etain's guardian. "Gow meeet!" He did look rather interesting, and she looked intrigued now. "We gow?"

Oh, what a relief! Nodding, Etain quickly took off in Tovar's direction, his little legs working hard to keep from tumbling and his tail held out at a slight angle to the ground to keep balance. He just managed to slow himself to a stop before knocking into Tovar's back.

"T'var..." Etain muttered, poking the man in the back.

He started, dropping the book and immediately losing his place. "Wha--oh. What do you want Etai--..." The young man fell silent as his attention fell on the little girl accompanying Etain. "Who's this?"

"M'dusa. Gave me a'cookie."

"Yee!" Medusa held out her hand, brightening at the chance to meet someone new. He really was intriguing; glancing him over almost expertly, she nodded before turning to look at the book he was holding, then spoke again. "Yew loze spot?"

It looked like Tovar was biting back some rather thorough amusement. Smiling sharply, he offered his hand out to catch Medusa's, shaking it lightly. She was...definitely some sort of jellyfish, by the looks of it -- and good God, was that a fish floating around in there? Chuckling slightly, Tovar released her hand and looked to his book. "Ah, seems I have...-- but it's not difficult to find again, I suppose."

Etain smiled brightly, apparently having forgotten his previous trauma concerning Medusa's guardian. By the looks of it, the unicorn was absolutely filled to bursting with pride in his own parents. "T'var's nice," he chirped proudly, fingers curling in the edge of the man's shirt, his little cheek pressed against his side.

"Payg... one-two... five." Medusa stated, peering over Etain's shoulder as she tried to get a better look. Books were rather intriguing...! Oh, how she wished she could read better.

Tovar blinked, glancing sharply in Medusa's direction. "One-twenty-five, huh?" He'd humor her. Pulling the book to him, he thumbed through the pages until--

Tovar set the book back down, features blank from surprise. "...Someone's certainly got a sharp pair of eyes."

Etain shifted, standing on tiptoe to peer into the book. He was somewhat shorter than his new friend, and had a bit of a hard time spying the page. "Right?"

Tovar nodded. "She's right."

Beaming, Medusa blushed for a moment before hearing Kanth call, then glanced to the woman over at the other table. "Be ryte bak!" She exclaimed, and hopped over to the picnic table to achieve a popsicle (blue, to be exact), and wander back over to the other two. Kanth didn't have a problem with Medusa wandering around, as long as she stayed in sight.

"Wan go pley wit duks 'gain?" The jellyfish girl asked around the popsicle, feeling a small bit better now that she had something to eat. The fish inside of her belly seemed to shiver for a moment, then spin around in circles as if it was on a sugar high.

Tovar and Etain both watched with some impassive interest as the little girl scuttled off only to return a few moments later. Immediately, Etain detached himself from his guardian's hip in favor of rejoining his friend. "Ducks," he parroted in agreement, forgoing Medusa's possibly stick hands (thank you, popsicle) in favor of simply leading the way on back to the edge of the pond.

A few of the ducks had settled themselves into the grass and the reeds, but they immediatly got up and waddled into the water as the two children approached. Darnit.

"Mum sez duks liek bred." She stated as if it were a simple matter, and bit off a piece of the popsicle as she walked, sucking on it thoughtfully. She stared at Etain with her grey eyes, waiting to see if he'd say anything.

Blinking, Etain cast a backward glance over his shoulder toward the picnic table and Tovar. They didn't have any bread, he thought - at least, not that he could remember. "Dun have any," he muttered with some dissapointment as he glanced back to the fleeing ducks.

And that was a crying shame.

"Awwwww." Medusa stated, frowning as she finished her popsicle and leaned forward to rinse her hands off in the water. "Yew wanna plae?" She pointed at the water.

After a moment's consideration, Etain nodded sharply. "'Lright." He'd been wanding to flounder around in that water anyway, and now was his chance. Trudging forward, his little purple jellie sandals squeaking slightly across the gross, he immediately waded into the water at the edge of the pond.

It was cold.

Tovar probably didn't want his shorts getting wet.

Getting in right after him, Medusa floated on her stomach for a short while before she stood up and waded over to him, pointing to a patch of kelp. "Geud tew eet?" She asked, curious. Kanth still hadn't found a 'balanced diet' for her, and she was pretty much open to eat anything she came across that suited her fancy.

After all, it wasn't like she could get in trouble for it, even if they could see in her stomach to study what she ate and how it affected her. So far, popsicles were good, but it made the fish kinda go crazy.

Etain waded until the water came up just below his knees, choosing to be rather safe than sorry when it came to his shorts. Besides, if he wanted to get wetter, he could just take 'em off right? He glanced crookedly at the pond scummy looking vegetation and immediately made a face.

"Ewwww," he croaked, the word sticking in his throat, smacking clearly of distate. "Ick. --I like those." He twisted, pointing back up onto the shore toward a patch of dandelions. They were good; not as tasty as the roses and sunflowers, but nice. Tovar didn't like him to eat the ones in parks though cuz' he thought they might have been sprayed with stuff that might eat him from the inside out.

Or something like that.

Not-water things? What fun was that? "Ooohhh." She said, nodding as if she understood. Which, in reality, she really didn't. Reaching under the water to pull a bit of the kelp up, she chewed on it experimentally before ripping off a piece and offering it to Etain.

She didn't really think he had tried it before. But then again, neither had she.

The unicorn made a face, backpeddling slightly. "S'okay," he said, shaking his head so quickly his tight little curls flipped and flopped. "'M full." That cookie...had filled him right up. Or something like that.

So long as he didn't have to eat that gross looking stuff. It smelled awfully funny.

Etain watched with mute horror as Medusa began chewing on her half of the stuff.

"S'not bad!!" Medusa smiled, finishing off his piece as well. It floated down her throat and swirled around in her stomach, almost as if she swallowed a pretty ribbon.

The fish didn't seem happy.

Etain made a rather interesting face in response. It was a sort of comical upper-lip twist, nose-scrunching, brow-furrowing look that in the end just made him look a little ridiculous (but still utterly disturbed by Medusa's choice of food). "N-no. S'okay."

Absently, he glanced back over his shoulder toward Tovar. From the looks of it, his guardian was starting to shift around where he sat - fiddle with the strap of his bag. If Etain knew anything about Tovar - which, he liked to think, he did -, that meant it was almost time to go home...

Blinking at him, Medusa tilted her head and shrugged, washing off her hands in the pond again before standing up, glancing at her own party. The picnic had dwelled down quite a bit, and they were starting to pick things up; had they really been out that long?

"Teim tew gow," Medusa said with a kind of twisted frown, before wringing her hands together and looking at Etain with a bit of sadness. "Weill eye seyu 'gain?"

Etain didn't look to Medusa's own party. Instead, he kept his eyes firmly trained out on the water and the ducks, gnawing absently at his lower lip as his new friend took stock of her own guardian situation. He glanced up when she spoke. "Mmhmm!" he assured her adamantly, brow furrowing with determination. "C'n come over!" he offered, swishing absently back in forth where he stood knee deep in the water.

"Etain!" Tovar's call drew his attention momentarily. The little boy frowned harder.

"Bye bye?" he chirped uncertainly, peering hard at Medusa.

"Naut bye, cee yew laytr." Medusa, careful of her hands (for she didn't want to hurt her new friend like she had hurt Kanth), leaned forward and gave him a big hug, her cheek pressing against his neck for a moment.

"Hart," She murmured happily, listening to his heartbeat. Hers sounded a bit different, but it couldn't have been that different! Pulling away, Medusa stared into his brown eyes with her own grey ones. "Cee yew laytr? I try tew koom ovar."

Etain flopped into the hug with fevor. He was good at hugs, and he liked them rather alot. Absolutely heedless of any danger, he wrapped his arms around her slightly squishy frame and returned the hug happily. Luckily, most of Medusa's exterior didn't seem remotely threatening so Etain was left perfectly oblivious to his new friend's biological abilities.

"See you," he chirped, untangling himself from her and offering a short, flapping wave before he waded from the water and started off at a wobbly run back to Tovar.

Medusa smiled as he left, waving happily, knowing for sure she could convince Kanth to let her visit him again, possibly in the near future.

"Ready to go?" Kanth asked softly, after a long moment of watching Medusa stare at the water, receiving a nod from the girl.

"Yah, yah. Redee." Putting out her hand, Medusa tugged on Kanth's pants, making a pouting face. Kanth mistook this entirely, and picked the little girl up, glancing at the now empty picnic table.

"Did you want more than a popsicle, my little jelly girl...?" Kanth murmured soothingly, reaching up to toy with a lock of medusa's hair. Medusa shook her head from side to side furiously, then glanced over to Etain to point him out...

But they were gone. Drat. She'd have to ask Kanth later. But right now, she was tired, and it was a long day. Medusa put her head on Kanth's shoulder and closed her eyes, feeling her body sag...

Quote:
What a long week it's been. Receiving Medusa, meeting with other parents, taking the kid out to different places... things have been going fine (minus the bathtub scene, but that's beside the point), until Kefka came into the picture. Medusa was minding her own business when he came along, grabbed the crayon out of her hand and scribbled on her nice pages of letters. And the worst thing? She didn't even do anything. Any normal kid would cry, throw a tantrum, or try to beat the aggressor up, but she didn't do any of those things.

All she did was stare at him.

He broke a few of her crayons, and I knew he was starting to get agitated at her non-emotion, so I entered as quickly as I could and threw him outside. When I came back into the living room, Medusa had shoved all of the things away from her and just laid in the middle of the floor, her face still stoic.

It was obvious that she didn't want to color any more, and when I tried to talk to her, she just refused to answer, as if she was toning me out.

I'm a bit worried; I haven't raised a kid for so long (Kefka doesn't count - he's a MAJOR mischief maker, and I worry about him anyway without earning grey hairs over it), and I couldn't remember if this is a problem factor at that age, or what...

Anyway, a few hours passed and she seemed fine, but she still hasn't touched her crayons, nor her pages.

I still worry about what to feed her... goodness, what DO jellyfish eat anyway?

A long while had passed until Medusa dared to pick up her crayons again. She made sure no one was around before coloring the rest of the letters, and taking hours on her pages to make them look 'neat'. She'd ask Kanth about the letters later.
