Yeah, the pen tablets are really pretty cool - you use them just like you would use a sketchbook, only it's completely digital (obviously, you'd need graphics software to provide your 'artist tools' with which to draw). I had a small one some time back and it was *awesome* for me to have, but it took a little getting used to - mostly with the synchronization aspects between it and the computer, if I recall correctly. Mine's currently in the garage somewhere - unrecovered since our move rolleyes (silly men with their boxes and inability to pack/unpack!). I wonder if I could find it, the stylus and the software.... sweatdrop Hmmm...
BTW, not all of them are $500. I seem to recall paying about $100 for mine several years ago, and the technology has only improved, along with the desire for them (thus, the prices for better tablets has likely dropped).

you can still purchase the pen set for around $100 at most computer stores and the software cost about the same.

OMG!! I'm going to HAVE to start doing some then!!!! ::trots off to wrestle with the various boxes in the garage to find pen tablet sweatdrop :: PS: I'm not commenting on the quality of art (it's better than most I've seen) - just on the going prices for such things and my ability to do it!!
