Koin looked back at the klipspringer before turning around.
"Are you okay?" he called out a bit.

Chachili's forehead blazed.
"I'm... I'm..." she tried to finish what she was saying, but instantly toppled over.
'No!' she thought to herself, trying to wake herself up, 'Don't faint! Come to your senses, Chachili! That dog could... he could... eat you, while you're sick! Don't let him do that, Chachili... Chachili!'
Staying awake, Chachili fumbled, then got to her legs, shakily.
"I'm alright, Koin," she gasped, trying her hardest not to fall to her knees again, "Just a little tired. Maybe I should get some sleep. Could you show me how to hunt another time?".

"You should get some rest then," he said, running to the tree and jumping onto the lowest branch.
"I'll watch out for you, so no one comes along," he said. laying on the branch. "Unless you want me to leave that is..."

Chachili smiled.
"No, it's okay," she replied, standing straight, "I'm fine. And you're fine where you are, too. But I don't need to be protected. I'm fine by myself. Nobody needs to watch over me."
She looked to the stars, her head throbbing, but smiling all the same.
"I'm fine," she repeated, "I'm fine. Thankyou, Koin. Thanks for lookin' out for me."

He nodded a bit, and looked up at the stars as well.
"It's nothing..." he said. "After all... it's an eye for an eye."

Chachili smiled.
"An eye for an eye, huh?"
The figure from her dream appeared again. Her father, turning away. Herself, as a fawn, running to escape from the lion. Her father hadn't turned back.
Oh, how she had wanted him to turn.
But he hadn't. He'd walked away. Chachili's heart had hurt in that dream. She had awoken, realising her father had abandoned her in her dreams, and that her mother was no longer of this world. Her herd was dead, or scattered, long lost in the plains of Africa. She was alone.
"Thanks," Chachili grinned again, "It's a little weird. A predator, looking after prey. What is the world coming to, Koin?"
Then, with a sigh, Chachili lowered her head. Before she closed her eyes, she whispered something.
"Thanks. Really, I mean it, dog."
She wondered if Koin would be there in the morning. She didn't mind if he left. She was safe where she was, concealed by some long grass. And she already had felt safe. Koin was looking out for her. Chachili could depend on somebody.
She drifted into sleep.
