Essence of Ninjutsu
By Soke Masaaki Hatsumi

I believe that Ninpo, the highest order of Ninjutsu, should be offered to the world as a guiding influence for all martial artist. The physical and spiritual survival methods eventually immortalized by Japan's ninja were in fact one of the sources of Japanese martial arts. Without complete and total training in all aspects of the combative arts, today's martial artist cannot hope to progress any further than mere proficiency in the limited set of muscular skills that make up his or her training system. Personal enlightenment can only come about through total immersion in the martial tradition as a way of living. By experiencing the confrontation of danger, the transcendence of fear of injury or death, and a working knowledge of individual personal powers and limitations, the practitioner of Ninjutsu can gain the strength and invincibility that permit enjoyment of the flowers moving in the wind, appreciation of the love of others, and contentment with the presence of peace in society.

The attainment of this enlightenment is characterized by the development of the jihi no kokoro, or "benevolent heart." Stronger than love itself, the benevolent heart is capable of encompassing all that constitutes universal justice and all that finds expression in the unfolding of the universal scheme. Born of the insight attained from repeated exposure to the very brink between life and death, the benevolent heart of Ninpo is the key to finding harmony and understanding in the realms of the spiritual and natural material worlds.

After so many generations of obscurity in the shadowy recesses of history, the life philosophy of the ninja is now once again emerging, because once again, it is the time in human destiny in which Ninpo is needed. May peace prevail so mankind may continue to grow and evolve into the next great plateau.

It is said that Sun Tzu's The Art of War was used by ninja witch would be a good guess but from what I have read so far it's not likely.

I still have a feeling that the Ainu may have some connection to ninjas but I realy don't know how far the Ainu spread ito Japan.

the reason tokugawa was believed to be ninja was because he had a ninja as a general. the ninjas name was Hattori Hanzo. there were reported at least 4 hattori hanzo`s but this one was the one that made the name famous.

All very interesting stuff, thanks for contributing.
The Chinese had "Ninja" 3-4,000 years ago, and that's cause for the speculation that it originated there. They were called Moshu Nanren, you might want to read up on them as well.
Knights of Darkness is a short read, but definitely a good one. As much for strategy as for a history lesson.

The guy who made Knights of Darkness Dr. Haha Long from what I have read is full of s**t from what I heard he is right up there with Ashida Kim. Lin Kui are said to have been chinses ninja of sorts they were called forest demons martial arts criminals who hid in the woods. I have been looking for some info on them but it almost always comes to Dr. Long and you can't get past all the Mortal Kombat crap.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashida_kim

This info should be taken as little more than some truth mixed with bull. Most of it is just some ones guesses at how it all was.

Don't believe everything you read, Wolf, Dr. Lung's book is full of common sense as much as anything. At no time does he get overly 'mystical' in his approaches or try to indulge the reader in super human fantasy.
The book is more on night fighting/recon technique than history, and of that it's quite helpful. He's got many other books written and until I come across a bad one, I plan to continue investing in his words.

another main reason that people believe that the ninja origonated (cant spell) in china is because of the way the movements are. unlike in most japanese style each strike ends in a new stance. much like kung fu, its not an art where you need to recoil to a previous stance to be able to strike again.

All this seems to be very interesting.

Tensho Iga No Ran was a battle in the Iga region that had a lot to do with Ninja Koga is also one of the areas where ninjas lived.

I was always told there was no such thing as Koga ninja at all anymore. No schools or nothing. Some even say Koga was totally made up. is this true?

I study koga ninjitsu and although it isnt a strict koga school its still enough a effective enough art for me to belive in.
