Shaking the hand with a bit of a smile, Stephan nodded, adding fairly quietly, "Stephan Abrams." He was stickling close to Remi, feeling a bit more comfortable around her than the others. Normally he wasn't one to be shy, but it had just recently clicked in his mind that this child he was going to be taking care of came from a soul, not a body, and it had him a bit on edge. "Oh, school," he mumbled, honestly having forgotten that eventually kids needed to go to school. Powers... Maybe he really should read that letter again, a bit more attentive. Soon as he found it. "Destructive as in dangerous?" He asked, not realizing that it sounded like a stupid question.

That still really didn't answer her question on what exactly the 'powers' could be. She also wondered what could be defined as 'desperate.' Did desperate extend to only life-threatening situations? or did include minor trifles such as running away from bathtime? Knowing Gavin, that situation could make him 'desparate' enough.

"How destructive can they be?" she asked warily. She didn't need a battle over bedtime turning into a nuclear blast.

Noticing that Stephan was sticking close to her, she started to feel a bit more comfortable. The others, save for maybe Dacian, had an almost 'untouchable' sense about them (though she vaguely noticed Thorn and Ahneta being quite friendly with one another). Stephan was a bit more on her level, making her feel less like someone who just intruded on a conversation.

"Yes, it could be fairly dangerous. As for how destructive...that would honestly depend on how much self-control the person has, as well as their own range of power. Also, intentions count for something - if someone with talent was utterly terrified but would be horrified at the thought someone being seriously injured, their power usually doesn't aim for serious injuries."

Though of course, accidents always happen.

Dacian was actually a bit distracted by Ahneta and Thorn's conversation - but it was more in a way of 'she's doing it again...' then actual disapproval. The empire that both he and Ahneta were from was very - open about such things. Hadrian's empire of origin however, was quite prudish by comparison.

No real surprise there. Though even there, how obviously forward that Ahneta was, was indeed a bit unusual.

Directing a smirk towards Thorn, the woman turned her attention back on the actual discussion.

"Just keep in mind that they aren't going to suddenly start destroying things for little reasons. The panic that causes them to use their power is more along the lines of an instinctive survival move - not something that's going to happen over bathtime, or 'time to go home'."

Marc nodded his head. Dangerous? For a silly moment he thought with horror about their home. Maybe, with her personality it wouldn't end up being so destructive. She was such a sweet, innocent soul after all, and Marc couldn't dream that she'd hurt anyone on purpose. So, he nodded to Dacian's words, as if he was talking about Haki in particular.

The man didn't know his daughter very well.

"It's going to be exciting." he said, grinning slightly. "When." he waved his arm. "That comes around."

It would be. And right now, he didn't want to think about it. Not yet.

Great. So they could be destructive, depending on the personality. Knowing his luck his daughter would end up being moody and stubborn, like his younger sister had been, and still was sometimes. Well, at least he'd be somewhat prepared to deal with it. And what he wasn't prepared for... That was why he had insurance.

Sort of.

"So... Any idea what their powers will be like? Fire, air, water, that kind of stuff?" He prodded, hoping to get the thinking out of the way as early as possible, "Or different?" Alright, so "different" left a very wide range, but sometimes a wide range was better than being specific. Specifications left loopholes, and when it came to something that could be dangerous, loopholes were bad.

Remi let out a sigh of relief. At least she knew that Gavin wouldn't blow the plumbing everytime it was time to take a bath. That and her precious Gavin was too sweet to wish harm to anyone.

...right?

Stephan seemed to be reading her previous thoughts when it came to powers. They hadn't said anything specific yet, which left her worried. Maybe it was something horrible. Or not. She wasn't sure yet. Nevertheless, Marc seemed excited.

"And when they do receive their powers, how long until they get some form of control over them?" she asked. For all she knew, it could be a matter of days, weeks, months, or years before she had a kid that could control his powers.

"At first, it'll be pretty weak anyway - so the control issue won't be such a big deal. Control itself is something that has to be taught...so as soon as we realize the flux of energies - and as far as we know, when it's first accessed there should be something like that - we'll set up training."

Specifics...ah, now there was something they didn't know much of.

"The types of powers are something we don't want to specify too much, just yet...we haven't had a whole lot of experience in predicting it. It might be something related to their blend, or it could be something completely random..."

It would be kind of hard to gain experience about something like this, without actually doing it. So this lucky batch got to be the test subjects! ...not that they'd be telling the guardians that.

"You haven't had a lot of experience?" his expression was full of doubt. Not at what she said, but because he wasn't sure he had wanted to hear that bit. What if they weren't any good at dealing with his Haki? What if they were awful teachers, and ended up harming her somehow?

He didn't know these two people, but he trusted Hadrian.

"Who will teach them?" he asked outloud, wondering. "All three of you? Do these lessons to control their gift go under the other schoo classes as well?" He remembered that the woman was supposed to be in charge of something.

But seeing the way Thorn looked at her, he wasn't sure he wanted this woman to teach his Haki.

"Can all mages teach?"

He was thinking about Hadrian.

Honestly, Stephan too was a bit skeptical about the mages' teaching abilities, "But if you don't know too much about their powers, how are you going to teach them about them?" It seemed like a fairly basic concept. Teach what you know, right? Of course, the frat boy shouldn't really have been talking. He knew a total of zero things about magic, and all of this mage babble was starting to make his head hurt. Maybe it was all the same, but just looked different? Worked the same or whatever.

He frowned a bit, not so much concerned over his future child's education as he was for his sanity and well being. And perhaps the nearby buildings. A temper tantrum from a magic child would be bad, and he tended to induce tantrums from children around him. Maybe it would have been better to think about that before he came here.

Everyone just seemed to be asking her questions for her. At this point, it seemed like they knew next to nothing about their children or what they were getting into. Well, she guessed they knew something but maybe not to a comfortable extent.

And these were going to be the educators of her child. Riiiight.

But then again, where else would she send him? She couldn't send him to a normal school, considering the whole issue with wings and such. Haki was lucky in that she looked human enough to go outside the compound.

"So, whenever you figure out what their powers are do we get some sort of orientation on how to deal with it outside of the classroom?"

"Good idea!"

Dacian beamed at Remiyah, definintly appreciating the idea of an orientation for the guardians - that would be useful. And something they'd probably be needing...

"Well, Ahneta will be the main teacher - but Hadrian and I will probably step in for some things. For example, Hadrian will be handling the sciences, and I'll probably take care of Language..."

"As for how we teach them without knowing too much about their powers - simple. In our own world, while mage talents were most common, there were some unusual ones...and I usually got stuck teaching the little buggers. So I have an idea or two."

Well, that wasn't exactly the most professional of statements, but at least she wasn't entirely new to teaching.
PostPosted: Fri Jul 14, 2006 11:47 pm

"Little buggers?" Thorn noted with amusement, smiling slyly as he watched the woman in front of him. Interesting and interesting! And Marc had never told him that these kids will have powers.

Maybe they will end up being more useful than he had first thought.

Standing there with a slight frown on his face, it was Marc who nodded. It was something. And while he didn't know these two, if Hadrian decided to teach _something_, maybe he could trust the woman with his Haki.

"Unusual?" he asked, frowning.

Just what would count as unusual, in their own old?

Oh lovely. Stephan eyed Ahneta suspiciously, suddenly realizing that not much that went on in the complex without a lot of thought. Seeming a bit edgy, he pushed on with another question, "Do any of you have teaching degrees? Like, not for the magic, for English and Math and all of that?"

Well, as Marc was, he was worried about colleges. After all, it had taken him some serious crunching through his sophmore and junior years to be accepted, and it had been a pain to worry about making sure his tution payment was up to date and everything. A scholarship would be nice. But if these people didn't even have teaching degrees, that wasn't very likely.

Remi smiled back at Dacian, glad that she could contribute, but then gave a slightly bewildered look to Ahneta. Little buggers? And this was the woman that was going to teach her child...

But then Stephan brought up a very good question. She was starting to feel a bit guilty over not having really thought out how Gavin was going to be educated. At first, she'd just jumped on the idea of school on the compound because it was free. Now that the thoughts of colleges and life after school were being brought up, she realized that maybe it wasn't that good of an idea.

"Education is a big deal here in this world," she stated, wondering if maybe it wasn't where the mages came from. Without a good education, life gets very difficult. "We just want to make sure that our children can get a good one here if we do let you teach them."

"I imagine it would be a bit difficult to find a college here that would accept degree's from another world."

Ahneta clearly scoffed at that comment, before explaining further, "In our world, something like university is only for rich nobles with too much time to waste; it never actually amounts to anything. But in terms of actual knowledge, all of us graduated with honors from the respective schools we attended."

Mage schools, of course.

"In our world, it's knowledge that's important; not how many degree's you can show off. Well - unless you're a noble."

"And, ah - you really don't need to worry about colleges accepting that education. When we first realized that we would be teaching the Souls, we went and got teacher certification."

Despite how it may have seemed - they weren't walking into this with their eyes closed.

"In effect, this is being treated as a home-school. So we even have to prove, with tests, that we're actually teaching them what they need to know; we do know what we're doing."
