And I just got here. Aah, Nippon. It hardly feels like I even left. Same darned humidity. -.-

I'm totally going to check out Nippombashi, the Osakan version of Akihabara this weekend. I really want a better cellphone than my old prepaid keitai, and I'd kind of like a denki jisho too... Although after seeing how much my Japanese improved since last year's visit, I'm starting to think that I might be able to get by without one.

Hehe, last summer at the Japan interns' welcoming party, everyone had to tell a story about their most embarrassing moment in Japan. Mine involved going through the wrong gate at the train station (twice!), getting attacked by the entry gates, and then fleeing in shame before anyone could confront me. What was your most embarrassing moment? biggrin

Oh, are you talking about DenDen Town? I went there last year, but I liked the huge Yodobashi Camera better actually. >_<;; Cellphones in Japan are cool, but they're a b***h to get if you're a foreigner D8 I tried to get one for the month I was there, with no luck. So I used a ton of phone cards. But my friend's uncle works in Tokyo, and he picked him up one. How did you get yours ? I love those wa-ei jiten/jisho, but all my relatives have one so I never really found the need to use one, though when I'm on my own, its pretty useful to borrow one. :'D
I think the most embarrassing moment for me in Japan was sitting in a bus in Kyoto and looking out the window, and the guy next to us was...ahem...fapping neutral So then I just got really embarrassed because he was looking straight at us, and I turned away but my friend didn't notice him until I screamed at him and he saw. Then the light changed, and all was well because he wasn't next to us anymore.
Either that or getting kancho'ed by my 6 year old cousin in Tokyo from Akihabara to Shibuya, and Harajuku and back.

Hope you have a great time!!
biggrin Kansai is a fun area

Yeah, that's what I meant - I happened to be consulting the train map at the moment though, and that's where it's located. ^^; Although now I'm thinking that I might have to put off that trip because this weekend is one of the most interesting for Gion Matsuri, so I might have to go check that out instead...

I dunno... I heard that some of last year's interns got keitei simply by bringing a passport along with them to one of the big electronics stores in Shinjuku or Akihabara or something - apparently people were really eager to sell phones. I got mine by using my work supervisor as a go-between - he handled all the paperwork for me. Haha, everyone at work is kind of freaking out because I don't have a cellphone number to give them... I guess I need to get things straightened out soon.

I see ;D I will need to remember that for next time I'm there surprised

I hope you're having a good time with your trip/internship (its an internship right?)
I love Kansai area it's so fun ;D
I've been to Gion before, its pretty cool, that's the downtown area of Kyoto correct? Do you know Nishihongwanji? That is my temple's mother temple, so we went there during our stay in Kyoto. After we went to Gion via taxi and got lost there XD

Heh, I got my phone renewed today - it turns out that you need both a passport and the address of where you're living. I'm really proud of myself for doing all the paperwork and negociations in Japanese, because there's no way I would have been able to do that last year. I wanted a new phone, but Japanese keitai are so darn expensive... and I'd rather buy a JPS2. 3nodding

Yeah, I'm doing an internship with Panasonic until the end of the year. Looking forward to revisiting Gion - I went there during a trip to Kyoto last year, but didn't get to spend much time there. I haven't heard of the Nishihongwanji, but since Kyoto has so many temples, that's probably no big surprise. I only visited some of the most famous when I visited.

I'm thrilled that there's so much to do in the Kansai area. I want to visit Kobe sometime, and of course Kyoto and Nara could use some rediscovering. Today, I went to the Osaka aquarium (fantastic, fantastic aquarium) as well as Nipponbashi (was looking for Den Den Town, but ended up in Nanba's huge shopping arcade). I think there's enough in the area to keep me entertained for quite some time yet.

Sweet!!!
Keitai are so much cooler than what we have in the USA D:

Panasonic Internship O.o; That's so cool!
Kansai is probably one of my favorite areas. Nishihongwanji is the Mother temple for my Buddhist Sect, Jodo Shinshu. It's right next to another Hongwanji. We also went to Kiyomizudera, Kinkakuji and Nara when I was there.
Whoo sounds like you've been having a good time

I've been to all of those places! We went to Namba at like, 10 one night...everything stays open in Dotonbori, Shinsaibashi, and all the other shotengai so its a lot nicer. Kyoto closes really early D:
Did you go to the cool Kaiyukan? We took a taxi there and the driver got lost O.<, so we ended having to spend like 400 yen more.
Keep me posted, I love hearing about your experiences :]

Tell me about it. D: My prepaid phone isn't that cool though - no internet. Sigh. It's pretty much only good for calls and text messaging, but oh well. At least it's fairly cheap.

Heck yes! ;D I've been to the Kiyomizudera and Kinkakuji. Also Ginkakuji and the Todaiji in Nara, as well as both Nijo-jo and Himeji-jo. I love this area, there's so much history here.

Yeah, I hated how early Kyoto shuts down. I'm kind of a night owl myself, so I prefer to be out late than out early. Yes, the aquarium that I went to was indeed the Kaiyukan. What a neat place - the whale shark was quite a sight to behold. I took the train though... It's funny how Japan's streets are so confusing that even taxi drivers get lost and have to ask for directions. It took ten forevers to find my apartment the day I moved in because the people taking me there got lost. xd

Fufufu... Yesterday I went and bought myself a JPS2 as an early birthday present (my birthday's on Sunday, the 23rd). I actually found Den Den Town this time around, thank goodness, and I got the FFXII bundle pack used, so it was about the price of a new, standard JPS2 ($200, darn you, expensive Japan D: ). I dunno if I'm going to be able to understand the game that well, although I started playing Okami, and I'm getting through it just fine so far (hooray for furigana).

As for this weekend, I haven't decided on where to go yet, but I think I might head into Nara proper and poke around there.

-At least you can text. My friends phone couldn't text XD
It's one of those Vodafone prepaid ones, and all it had on it was minutes.

-OOH. We went to Todaiji, and Nijo as well. Did you try to go through that stump thingie?! I went to Himejijo last year biggrin My uncle used to live in Hyogo/Osaka/Kobe area, but now he lives in Tokyo.

-I loved the Kaiyukan! Did you get a picture taken with the whale shark? It was pretty exciting I thought XD. Did the taxi driver get extremely lost when you were looking for your apartment the other day? When we got lost it wasn't that bad, but it was enough to make a difference in the overall bill.

-OooOh, you found Den Den Town, its coollll. Did you go to the Suupa Poteto Store or whatever it is called ? JPS2's are cool, as are the PSP's (the whiteones!). I bought a DS while I was there, but I got it at Yodobashi Camera in Akihabara. It ended up about 90 USD because my uncle had those gold cards and I got points which reduced the price :]
But the nice thing is that I can play both English and Japanese games. I like tetris in Japanese though.
Animal crossing too biggrin

-Ooh, Nara again, hope you have fun!

I wish I had a phone when I was there, we couldn't get me one even though I had the correct visitor status and such. So I had to carry around phone cards usually. My friend had a prepaid vodafone and had to recharge it, but we went to one of those "all-carrier" type of stores (the ones that have voda, docomo, au tu-ka, etc) and he paid 3,000 yen to recharge it because that was the lowest denomination they offered. Fruits were crazy there! I tried not to eat that many that often because they were so expensive at the markets D:.
I mean, like 700yen for a pineapple. My friend said he saw them for even lower, but that's still a lot.

Hmm? My cell phone is also a Vodafone prepaid, but it can send and receive text messages just fine. That's how I ended up doing a lot of my email with my friends last year because I didn't have internet in my dorm room. I ended up just renewing the number on it instead of getting a new phone.

NakaTake
-OOH. We went to Todaiji, and Nijo as well. Did you try to go through that stump thingie?!

Heh, I didn't but one of the guys in our group did. He's very tall but also very skinny, and while he did make it through, he sure looked ridiculous doing it. xd

NakaTake

Did the taxi driver get extremely lost when you were looking for your apartment the other day? When we got lost it wasn't that bad, but it was enough to make a difference in the overall bill.

I skipped the line for the whale shark photos because I wanted to get ahead of the crowd... Which, of course, is nearly impossible for the first third of the aquarium because the corridor is so narrow. OH YES. There was a wedding procession through the aquarium at one point while I was there. There were all these handbells ringing, and then a bride and groom walked by with all these people in nice clothing behind them. It was quite strange. o_o; Actually, if you are interested in seeing photos of the aquarium (I guess this would be more applicable to those who haven't gone to it), I put together a little page about that trip right here.

Heh, I was actually driven to my apartment by a couple of Panasonic's HR folks, so at least it didn't cost me anything. The driver totally wandered off to get directions at one point and didn't come back for fifteen minutes or so. It was sad too, because the apartment was like, one block over, but of course, in Japan, it can be ridiculously difficult to locate a specific address.

NakaTake

I didn't go through all of Den Den Town, so I didn't see anything with Potato in the name. I did see a huge toy store as well as a shop devoted entirely to Gundam paraphernalia, which I found pretty amusing...

NakaTake
I saw PoTC when I got back XDDD, but Deathnote was awesome :]

PotC was the last movie I saw in the States. Not sure what my first movie in Japan is going to be, but it might end up being the new Miyazaki film. Is the Death Note movie worth watching if one has only read about halfway through the manga series?

NakaTake

I mean, like 700yen for a pineapple. My friend said he saw them for even lower, but that's still a lot.

I saw the cutest little pineapples for sale the other day, but they were like, $3 apiece... and totally the size of a grapefruit. Well, ever since I got spoiled by $1 pineapples at Boston's Haymarket, I've never been able to bring myself to buy storebought pineapples. I find it sad that apples here are well over a dollar apiece, whereas back home, you can get a pound of apples for the same price. The apples here are really bland too, so it's not really worth it. Well, Japan is supposed to be the longest-lived country, and if people get away with eating rice and fish in lieu of fruit, maybe they've got something going there. <_<

Hrmm... I might reschedule Nara for another weekend. The weather here has been absolutely rotton. It's been raining straight since Wednesday, and I keep getting soaked going to and coming back from work. If it keeps raining tomorrow, I'd rather not be outside and wandering from temple to temple. Guess I'll figure it out in the morning. -_-

I theorize the reason most Japanese live so long, is because they don't stuff themselves with meats, and other high cholesterol foods, like many people do in America, and other countries.

In short, eating lots of fish will give you Protein, and Omega-3, and eating lots of meat will give you a heart attack.

This is just what I think, of course....
