It's all about the audiences. TV audiences for an action oriented anime likely do not have the attention span to be reading the dialogue, and you will likely miss important details while your attention is split. Pretentious foreign films are more dialogue than action based and have a more sophisticated audience that is more likely to want the original audio intact. Being slower paced you're also less likely to miss important visual details. I prefer subs because wether it's animated or not the original actors are almost always perform better than English dub actors.

Not really. The thing about subtitles is that you have to read them fast, a lot faster than simply how long the subs are on the screen. It's not as easy as you might think.

Personally, I prefer subs, because dubs have to be professional work almost by requirement, and there's a lot of factors in professional work that might change the original meanings of the show. But then that's my personal preference, since I've picked up a bit of Japanese (enough to watch a few shows raw, at least), and there's a world of difference between "Sakura", "Sakura-san", and "Sakura-chan" that the dubs may not pick up on... just as an example. For someone who doesn't know as much Japanese, they might not care that much.

(I'm still wondering how to translate "moshikashite" to capture the meaning and feel without having to retranslate everything on a case-by-case basis. No, I don't do any real translation work, but I do write fanfics.)

The old Chinese they used is beautiful. Then again, I'm Chinese, so maybe I'm biased.

Well, if it wasn't dubbed, I highly doubt that it would sell near as much. I don't have a problem with subs, but a lot of people won't watch anime if it 's not in English.

I can watch it either way, but the English voice actors are getting better bit by bit.

I like dubs, because I'm lazy and I don't want to focus my attention on the bottom of the screen all the time.

If the dub is fairly decent then I will usually watch it. Since getting the uncut DVDs of Yu Yu Hakusho, I've hardly watched it subbed. sweatdrop Maybe I've gotten lazy because I watch dubs alot more than subs.
