 "I hope I can stay put for a while too." Desert had it pegged.
His mind wanted to debate River's wisdom in that regard. Koenshan was unsure what kind of company he could be. He bit his tongue to hold back a self-degrading remark, though he kept his other senses open.
Hearing that their other packmates had not been around, Koenshan could only gasp. "Surely they would not have all left at once." There was a confidence he did not feel in the male. Yes, he had caught the others' scents & thought nothing more about it. How could he have missed the staleness in the smell?
Suddenly something very, very wrong popped into Koenshan's mind. "They were here for the cubs' birth, right? Someone? Diego?"
Having seen how his Alphas' cared for each other, Koenshan's heart ached at the possibility of them not being together for such a momentous occasion.

Desert's ears flattened at the prospect of River being alone for the birth. Even his mom wasn't alone. He vaugely remembered the presence of other wolves when he was born, even if he didn't know who they were. Even if the alpha wasn't alone for the birth, he knew she must be lonely now. He looked at River anxiously, wondering what her response to Koen's question would be.

She looked at the two of them and sighed, she wouldn't lie, not to these two. "I was alone for the birth, not even Diego was around..." She didn't want to have to tell them but she wouldn't lie either. They were loyal to her and that meant alot, it meant the world to her.

"But how... why..." Koenshan felt his larynx constrict & his eyes burned as if irritated by dirt or sand. He felt the moisture gather; not quite easing the burning.
"Oh, River... I'm sorry." The green male hung his head in sorrow & shame.

Desert couldn't think of anything to say. There was nothing that could be said to lessen the saddness of this news. Instead, hoping he was not being too forward, he move forward and gave River a comforting nudge with his muzzle

River nuzzled both Desert and Koen in turn. They were her friends, not packmates. They both cared.
"Come on boys, don't be so silly, it was fine and somewhat expected to be honest." She smiled at them, "You weren't to know, so don't be sad. Think of my healthy children, even if you won't ever meet my son, my three girls may even class as your mates one day!" She smiled at them both lovingly and flicked her tail behind her.

((yay Desert grew! whee heart )) Mates? Desert's ears twitched. That wasn't something he had really given much thought to, even though he was getting older. Now that River mentioned it though, it began to take on a certain appeal....He snapped out of his train of thought after a moment though, to respond to what River had said, unable to just let what had happened pass by. "It just seems.... wrong that you should have expected that from your mate. You shouldn't even have had to think along those lines...." He laid his ears flat in frustration. "I know I would never do that to anyone...."

The elder male too flinched a bit as River lumped her daughters, mates, & them in the same passing comment. She must be joking... maybe joking to hide the pain? He had known some to do that. It certainly was not his way, but to each their own.
"I would be honored to meet your pups." He said instead of voicing his other thoughts. Like why her son had needed someone to look after him. Or what they were going to do now.

River smiled at the boys, "My pups aren't really pups anymore, they are growing fast. I will leave Rune and Fute with their father but I would like it Blue came with me and maybe both of you." She was being somewhat cryptic and wasn't looking exactly happy either.
"I can't stay here. I have wanted a mate for years and then I got Diego, it was a dream come true that turned to a nightmare. I have no mate, just a male who comes and goes and because of that I am leaving and I would love it greatly if you both you would come with me."She paused to take a breath and then watched the boys reactions. She loved them both dearly, they were her true friends, she had known Desert since he was a small pup and she just loves them both dearly.
"Please come with me."

Desert was a bit taken aback by River's request.. She wanted to leave? And for himself, Koen and Blue to accompany her? He had just gotten back and was weary on his feet, and had missed this place that he had begun to call home. After a second, however, Desert realized that he had more missed the wolves that went along with the place, not the location itself. And from what River said, it sounded as if few of the wolves he knew were even there anymore, and he didn't feel an immense loyalty to Diego anyways, not like he felt to River.
"I will follow you River," Desert said matter-of-factly, having made his decision

Grief & sorrow filled the former scouts eyes. What if this was somehow his fault? The guilt from not saving his former pack tearing apart his new pack? He hung his head in shame. "If you truly want me along, I will follow you River. It was you who invited me into your pack & you who I will follow still."

River smiled, she looked at Koen and sighed, "Koen, Thank you, you are a great friend and a very close one, as are you Desert! I need you both to do one last thing before we go. I need you both to stay here, if either of you se Diego, tell him about us leaving I have to go and see if i can find Ren and make sure she is ok. She left us and I want to find her." She smiled again and then looked to the sky.
"Thank You, both of you!" She smiled and went over to them, licking at their noses before nuzzling them both, oh how she loved these boys!

"Of course I will stay here," Desert nodded and nuzzled River in return. He smiled before straightening up and padding a few steps away and sitting down, with the appearance of an attentive sentry.
"If Diego comes by, we'll see him," he said, wagging his tail a couple of times.

The former scout was unaccustomed to such displays of affection -particularly from one he still considered his alpha. Despite having been asked to be beta he still did not feel like one, and now with the pack doing whatever it was it was doing Koenshan was not even sure such a thing was relevant anyway. Embarrassed the blue & green wolf ducked his head & averted his eyes. "As you wish, River."
He may as well have said 'As you wish, my queen' for all the formality he put into it. Then he was back in protect & guard mode, readying to walk the 'boundaries' of what for a short time had been his new home. At least he still had a pack of sorts. Koenshan sighed deeply.

River smiledat the two, "Thank you.." She couldn't ever express the feelings she had for these two, her best friends.
She turned to leave, she needed to make sure Ren was ok, she had to, just in case.
