when you sit and play, try playing with the guitar in a classical stance. thats where the guitar body is in you lap instead of slung over you picking side's leg. this is a strange feeling, but it helps a lot when you try and play while standing. also, how long are you keeping your strap? when you stand, the bridge of the guitar(the part where the strings come through the body) should be around your waist. its really hard to play when you are standing and the guitar is at your crotch. also, getting a feel for the fretboard is important. try developing your hearing so you can at least tell when you are close to the note. once you can feel where you are on the fretboard, playing behind your head is uber simple. picking with your teeth isn't hard either, but just makes sure you dont mess up and cut your gums on the strings. i've seen it, and its not pretty.

Well, playing in the dark is a good one, but if you're still having trouble, try it in baby steps. The side od the finger board has dots or marks on it, marking the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 12th, 15th, 17th ect... frets. If you have trouble mid-playing just use those as place marks and keep going.

well kind of if you've played the guitar long enough you will memorize the neck sort of or keep the strap short so its wear it would be if you were sitting

definately practice playing standing up...and like some others said, in the dark. also when your not playing in the dark, try not looking at the fretboard at all. those tactics really helped me

I always had a problem with the sidemarkers. One of my guitars has a dot on the 3rd fret and the rest don't, which can get confusing if I haven't played it for a bit. My teacher doesn't have any sidemarkers. Now that is weird. I borrowed his guitar once, and it's really hard to work out where you're sliding to, you have to count the frets. (That was also the first time I'd played a full size, so I was a bit unsure of where the frets were anyway.)

I could never play standing, but all of a sudden (literally quite shortly ago) I can stand. I guess it just takes time to get to know the guitar and to become comfortable with playing.

My other problem is that I have a seriously bad knee. So I can't stand up straight. I end up leaning a lot on my right leg. Which means that the neck is pointing downwards. So I become unbalanced. So I fall over. In the middle of a guitar solo. So I look stupid. And I can't exactly sit on a stool, because we're kind of a punk rock band, so sitting down just looks weird.

find a good stance that you're confortable with, spread ur legs like power metal dudes. and also it works for me, practice in front of the mirror, but instead of looking down at the guitar, look at the one in the mirror and you get usd to it.

I must add that if you can't play a song and only "cheat" by looking at the fretboard a few times, then you probably shouldn't be playing that song onstage just yet.

drugsandsex[VULGAR LOL] I was wondering....how the hell do you people play while standing up? I tried it and I can't see the strings or frets, and I can't play unless I see the strings or frets. What do you do, memorize the guitar question xp It's somthing you have to get used to. You should try not to look at your fingers, after a while you can make a note without looking, so it makes it that much easier.

Triste I must add that if you can't play a song and only "cheat" by looking at the fretboard a few times, then you probably shouldn't be playing that song onstage just yet. There is nothing wrong with looking at the guitar while you are playing. I don't actually use the side markers. For some odd reason, I use the face markers. confused I guess that it is just because of the way I hold the guitar.

lushrocker yeah like everyones said get a feel for it then you can try playing behind your head woo!! yeah playing behind your head is soo fun, its col to show off to people too cause if they don't already know how to play than they'll be like "oh that is soo cool!" and... yeah... like that one dude/chick said: play in the dark. and maybe (like me) you just end up doing it without knowing. like one time i was lookingn at my friend while she was talking o me and i was playing (pretty good for not looking wink ) best of luck man! razz

(many people have probably already said this answer, but I don't feel like reading every post) So does your guitar have those dots on the side of the fretboard? If so, after you've been playing for awhile and feel comfortable knowing which dot means which fret, it's easy to stand up. An easy way I remembered the dots is that each dot is on an odd numbered fret. (so each dot is on the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, and so on frets) The even numbered frets don't have any dots. The 12 fret has 2 dots.
