 Skye's life has settled into a routine, but there is one thing about it that she doesn't like very much. She still hasn't quite grown used to sleeping in a bed, outside of her vase, despite the fact that she has been this size for several months. Still she feels the same unease about being out in the open so much. Sleeping with Mama helps sometimes, but now Idhril is the one to sleep with Mama when they sleep at the cafe. At the inn, Mama sleeps alone.
And so does Skye.
Or did, until tonight. Tonight, she has a new friend that she can sleep with, one she can cuddle with and fall asleep with, hold as tightly as she wishes, upon whom she can bestow her love.
Now, she still has trouble falling asleep. She still feels uneasy in the openness of her bed. But at least she isn't alone.

Skye was enjoying her time at the castle, even though she had only just arrived. It was a long way through the maze that led to the rest of the castle, and that bit had been boring because it was all so identical, no matter which corridor they had gone down. Her excitement had grown again, however, when they had finally left the labyrinth and headed up a set of stairs to a large room. There, they had met several other people – again, Tinúviel who had led them through the maze, then two others who Skye tried to talk to but couldn’t understand, and then a tall lady who gave Elnara lots of hugs.
Skye wanted to find out who these other two were, the tall lady and the man who knew how to talk with his hands, and when they left the room she followed them to find out more about them.
They were walking away pretty quickly, and Skye ran to catch up with them. They turned and looked at her as she approached, and she noticed that they seemed surprised. She giggled and tugged on the tall man’s hand. “What you name?” she asked him brightly – then corrected herself. “What’s you name? You cousin too?”
The man exchanged a glance with the woman, then knelt to Skye’s height and spoke. She could catch a bit of what he said, “My name is … not cousin …” but he spoke too quickly for her to catch the details. She frowned and put one hand to his throat, then requested, “Say again. Please.”
He looked surprised, but he did as she requested, repeating himself more slowly, more clearly, “My name is Elrohir. I’m not your cousin, I’m your uncle.”
Skye blinked. “Uncle Elrohir?” she questioned. When he nodded, she looked up at the woman. “Who you?”
The tall woman knelt down next to her and smiled. “My name,” she said, her lip movements slow and exaggerated, “is Aradhel.”
Skye smiled. “Arathel! Aunt Arathel?”
The woman laughed, then took Skye’s hand and held it in front of her mouth. “Hhhhhhh,” she breathed. “Hhhhharathel.”
Skye felt the breath on her hand and understood what it meant. “Haradhel,” she nodded, getting the first letter this time. Her hand was already in Haradhel’s, and she took it with both of her hands and smiled. “Make name with hands,” she instructed with a nod.
Haradhel looked a little lost, but Elrohir made a quick sign with his hands; then he made a second sign for his own name. Haradhel looked at Elrohir, then at Skye, and seemed as though she was asking a question, and Skye read something like “Why … hands?”
Before her uncle could reply, she grinned and put her hands behind her back. “Skye not can hear,” she told them cheerfully. “Papa teach Skye talk with hands because Skye not can hear.”
Elrohir didn’t look too surprised, but he leaned down and said, “Skye can not hear.”
Skye blinked. Was she being corrected? Well, that was a good thing, right?
“Skye not can not hear,” she replied, smiling proudly. She always liked to improve her speech.
Elrohir shook his head again. “No, not Skye not can not, just, Skye can not.” And he signed it with his hands as he said it.
“Skye can not,” Skye repeated obediently, her eyes on his hands. She nodded and said it again. “Skye can not hear.”
Elrohir nodded and smiled, then turned and spoke with Haradhel. She laughed, and a moment later Elrohir turned back to Skye.
We’re going outside, he signed to her, speaking at the same time. Would you like to come with us?
Skye’s eyes grew bright, and she nodded eagerly and clapped her hands. “See Uncle Gion?” she asked eagerly, hoping to see the one person who her Mama always said she wanted to see, who she said was really nice.
Elrohir shook his head and signed, He doesn’t live here. He was speaking to Haradhel at the same time, and Skye noticed – with some annoyance – that his lips’ movements weren’t matching the words he was signing. She grabbed his hands to make them stand still, then frowned up at him.
“What saying?” she asked him in an accusative tone. “Uncle Elrohir not say with mouth what say with hands.”
She felt strong vibrations coming from Haradhel, behind her, and she turned and saw that the woman was laughing heartily. Skye stared up at her for a moment, then blinked and looked back to her uncle, who was also laughing. She blinked at him as well, and her brow furrowed with confusion.
“What funny?” she asked, wondering what in the world they were laughing at.
Haradhel knelt in front of her again, and her lips moved quickly – far too quickly for Skye to understand what she had said. Skye blinked, and she repeated, more slowly, “I thought you said you were deaf.”
Skye nodded, confused. “Skye not can … no … Skye can not hear,” she insisted. “Why laughing? Not is … is not funny!” And she appeared so devastated that her aunt and uncle laughed even harder.
Elrohir knelt in front of her, still grinning, and signed, If you can’t hear anything, how did you know I was saying something different from what I was signing?
Skye frowned. “You mouth move lots, different from words you hand make. Not nice, Uncle Elrohir. Not nice say different to Haradhel than say to Skye.”
Elrohir laughed again. Sorry, he signed, and this time his lips matched his hands. I’ll try not to do that again.
Skye nodded, satisfied, then grinned. “Now we go outside!” she bubbled. “See everything!”
She took one of each of Haradhel and Elrohir’s hands and tugged them forward, even though she had no idea where they were going. “Let’s go!” she giggled.

So much can change in the space of a single day. Celebor and Serenity are going to be surprised when they come home again. Mommy brought home another brother for us yesterday. He’s like Kaito, only nicer, and he’s a demon instead of an angel. But he doesn’t pounce on anyone and he doesn’t take things from people, he’s really nice. I think he’s good for Kaito too, because he makes sure Kaito doesn’t pounce on anyone anymore either.
The inn is getting kind of full now, even our floor. It’s kind of empty with Serenity and Celebor gone, I feel lonely sometimes, but Mommy makes sure that I don’t feel too lonely. I still go with Papa to the library every day, and I have my lessons with him, and with Tristan and Yuki, too, I’m trying my best to learn a new dance for them. I want them to come home.
Last week Tristan and Yuki surprised me … at least, Yuki did. I always knew Tristan is a girl because Tristan is like Mommy, but Yuki was like Mommy too and he’s a boy! Yuki is a very good actor, just like he told me ~ he made me think he’s a girl! Maybe someday I can be just as good an actor! But I don’t want to act like a boy, I just want to play girl parts. Like that play that we saw, Cinderella, I think I could be Cinderella, or someone else maybe, if someone worked with me to learn the lines and how to know how strong to say them … I think I could do it. Mommy says sometimes I talk too strongly but it’s not my fault. But she says I’m quieter than Kaito … I guess that means his voice is stronger than mind. But Mommy says Shiro is very quiet and if that means that his voice isn’t very strong, then I guess I can understand it, because when he talks his vibrations are harder to feel than most other peoples’. I like his vibrations, though, they feel nice, kind of like Kaito’s, and kind of like Papa’s. I like Papa’s best, though.
I can’t wait for Celebor and Serenity to come back and meet him, they’re going to be so surprised!

Mother’s log, 5 May 2008
It’s been a very busy time for me, but as I’ve been pestering the children to update their journals, I thought it only fair that I found time to update Skye’s and Kaito’s. I fear, though, that there really isn’t a whole lot to write.
Skye … is Skye. She spent a day in the Second’s world with Miyu and Toshiro, flying a kite, from what I hear, though I personally don’t know what that is. Skye tried to describe it to me, but … to tell the truth, she wasn’t making a whole lot of sense. Her speech has improved greatly, and sometimes it’s more obvious than others that she is technically the same age as Serenity, even if she is a stage behind. It’s so hard to tell how her mind works … sometimes she acts like a child, and other times she comes up with something so profound that it completely astonishes me.
Her dancing continues to improve – though I will be the first to admit that I’m no expert. The only dancing I know is what I was taught during my few months living in the court, where I was taught with the expectation of having to entertain lords and possible suitors. Skye’s type of dance is completely different from that … but beautiful, nonetheless.
I daresay she’s quite fond of Yuki and Tristan. I hope they never have to leave … I don’t know if Skye would be able to take it, or if she would ask to join them.

Dancer's log, 25 June
I'm finally being a good girl and writing in my journal like Mommy wants. Well I guess I do have something to write about - I have some new friends! Their names are Syrus and Suzura. They are very nice. Syrus is a very good brother to Suzura. She cannot speak, just like I cannot hear, so we both talk with our hands and even Syrus can do that too! It is so neat! And I am teaching Suzura to dance, and maybe someday we can even bring Syrus in and make a dance for all three of us! We are going to have a picnic and maybe a sleepover next weekend when I come again, and I have to remember to bring ice tea. Syrus is going to bring snacks and food - and sugar!
I cannot wait for the time to come!

 Dancer's log, 1 September
I finally have lots to write about! I went on my sleepover with Syrus, Suzura was there for the day on Saturday but she had to go home to sleep for the night, so it was just me and Syrus at night. I do not know exactly how it happened, but he kissed me! It was my very first kiss ... it was very sweet ... it made me feel all giggly inside.
I like Syrus, very much. He asked me if I would like to be his girlfriend ... and I said yes! It makes me giggle even now as I write about it ... he is so nice, so sweet ... and he brought me a present. I wish I could think of a present for him! I will ask Mommy if I can go with her shopping next week, and I will look for something then. I know he does not expect anything, he told me not to get him anything ... but I want to, I want to show him how special he is for me. He is very special to me ... more special than anyone I know.
We will meet again soon ... but for now ... for now I can only dream about our next meeting.

Dec. 5  I had a delivery today! It has been such a while since I have had a reason to write in my journal, but today I have a very good reason! I was at home with Serenity, and she was painting while I was practicing my dancing because Tristan and Yuki are teaching me some new things, and then Shiro came to the door and he said that there was a package for me but the delivery man brought it to the library by accident first, so he brought it over for me. It was a nice white pouch with a gold wing on it, and a note attached that said: “ From: You're not so secret admirer <3 To: Skye Aldrich” It has to be from Syrus, he is so sweet to me. I want to see him again … very much. It has been too long since we have met. By now it must be winter in Naosho … I will buy him a Christmas present, I am certain that he will like that. And now I think I might know just what to get him …  Oh! I almost forgot! Inside the pouch was an orb necklace, a clear orb with a golden star and swirls in it! It is on a silver ribbon … it is beautiful. Syrus is so thoughtful … so very sweet to me. I cannot wait until we meet up again.
