Random Roman Facts

-Women of high social class would pay to have intercourse with gladiators because it was rumoured that gladiators were highly virile.

-In gladitorial combat, when a death was wanted, the thumb was held up toward the stomach, and when a gladiator was to be spared, the thumb was held down. Hollywood butchers this every time.

-At times, towns would be banned from having gladiators compete because of the riots that would ensue when a gladiator from an opposing town would win. Obviously we know where soccer fans' manners originated...

Edit: Umm...I just realized where I was posting this. Ho hum...this isn't the American History Thread Honest. /absentmindedness

Apropos
Historical Figures, how about Scipio and Hannibal? The Punic Wars? Battle of Marathon? The History of Sex? (Note: that actually got recorded on my roommates TiVo last night for some reason. I think it might have been the amount of alcohol I had to drink.)

Actually, if you've ever watched that History of Sex show, it's really fascinating. It goes across all these different ages and it talks about all these diffent aspects of sex and sexuality. Like that men used to belive that they only had a certain amount of semen that had to last them their whole life, and was in fact a part of their life force. Men who died "of old age" young or were lethargic in their old age were oftentimes believed to have died because they wasted to much sperm and didn't have enough, or sometimes any left, so for a while it was the fashion to wear any one of these differnt kinds of belts that would stop a guy from getting an erection with various methods such as a lever being attatched to his p***s so that when it rises it plucks pubic hairs until the pain makes the erection fade, or just sort of sock tube things that the p***s would be inserted into that would be filled with ice water at all times, and would just be worn with the underwear.

Of course, at the same time, women were encouraged to wear these sort of chastity savers. I don't remember what they were actually called, but they also had a bunch of different types and a girl was expected to insert it into her v****a every day and it would be designed to cut off anything that entered into it, or it would have a neddle at the end that could be filled with anything from poison to a tranquilizer to protect the girl from rape. Didn't last very long as most women didn't like having needles and razors inside of their vaginas like that.

Also, similar to the concept that a man's semen was his life force, people believed that a woman who was in hysterics or had the vapors was suffering from a spirit that was able to attack her because she was the weaker sex (as evidenced by Eve being the one to bring about the fall of Man) and because of that link to Eve the hysterics were the result of that spirit overflooding her body with sexual desires (which women weren't supposed to have, or were supposed to repress because they had to fight the wanton behaviour passed down to them from Eve) and so many doctors would treat their patients by "massaging" them until they had an orgasm or just flat out having sex with them.

It's really a neat show, you should watch it. Oh, and what's that other really good one on the history channel? Conquest! That's it. Each episode you learn all about the fighting styles, startegies, weapons etc. or two different people who were warring at the time, and a two groups of people learn to fight as their respective group would, then, at the end of the episode, they go into "battle" with each other fighting as the people would have and see who wins. It's really neat.

Random Medieval facts that have nothing to do with American History:

-One method of excorsism was a 10 gallon syringe that was filled with holy water and used as an enema. (Rasputina song. Rather spoken word piece called "Christian Soliders" off of How We Quit the Forest.)
-Countess Erzabet Bathory, one of the most well known female mass murders, murdered at least 620 young women during her reign.
-Countess Bathory was the cousin of the Polish king, and a distant relative of Vlad.
-Shut me up before I go on about Erzabet.

I was thinking more along th lines of Guy Fawkes. Who is so my hero. Just for being that horribly stupid.

Random historical facts that may or may not be useful:

-Ben Franklin has 74 illegitmate children. (I used to watch Cram back when GSN didn't suck. I could so kick a** on that show.)
-James I of England may or may not have been gay. It is only known that he liked to grope and drool over young men in his old age. (London. Good book.)

I'll think of more when my head decides to work.

Gods, I wish I could remember which Roman emperor it was. I know they were all known for being lascivious across genders, but there was one in the a few generations after Ceaser, when the lead poisoning and interbreeding were starting to show their effects, who would tie young boys up to a post, put on a lion skin (and nothing else if memory holds) and "maul" them. Was it Tiberias? Or maybe it was Calligula?

Bathory was the one who bathed in the blood of vigins to stay young, right?

Yeah. And then, when she killed off all the virtuous peasent girls, she started a manners school. And people actually sent their daughters to her despite all the rumors. Mmm stupidity.

She also invented honey torture and perfected the iron maiden.

Don't mind me, I know odd criminal history facts.

Okay. Why does everyone bring up Columbus. If we really wanted to talk about American History from the beginning we'd mention the Bering Land Bridge, and go on from there.

Beringia! xd That's the most personally fascinating thing I've learned in U.S. History so far. It caught my attention and hasn't let go since.

Are these random facts?

- In some towns in New England, pirates who have retired (forcibly by mutineers or not) ended up becoming politicans and law enforcers. Several respectible families actually had pirates as their founding fathers.

- The odd bump on most maps of the state of Minnesota is actually a map-maker's error, which is why the land is neither considered Canadian nor American.

- There were three presidents and one king before Washington was elected into office and the Consitution was made. And the king was not the king from England, but a native of the U.S.

- Custer was called 'Morning Star' by the natives and was considered to be a wolf in man's skin. Most natives of the time felt he was possessed by an evil ghost because of his cruelity.

...iron maiden? Whassat?

A box of iron shaped like a woman with the entire interior covered in large spikes. A person is placed inside of it and the whole thing is closed, thus driving the spikes into the person so depending on weight, the person would die either from a spike piercing a vital organ or from bleeding to death. The Inqusition used it to torture supposed witches among other people.

I like Columbus, but then again, I'm biased because of Orson Scott Card's, Pastwatch Redemption of Cristopher Columbus. As for the three presidents and king before George Washington, I remember reading about that somewhere on snopes, but can't remember if it was true or not.

Here's one:

Newton was known for his experiments with gravity, but he also did experiments with vision and the refraction of light and how it worked within the eye itself. In order to test how this worked, he would stick needles into his eyes at different points to see how it changed what he was seeing.

he did this repeatedly over the course of his daily studies, which lasted for about 2 years. eek

Descartes scraped away the back of a cow eyeball and peered through to understand how the brain percieves vision. He's also the guy who developed the graphing grid (it's name escapes me. sweatdrop ) by watching a fly walk across his tiled ceiling.
