Religion is a fasinating thing to study for 3 reasons,
1: It makes for super sweet debates with addicts(believers)
2: It makes it easier to go on forums and write disgustingly-scary-fanatic comments to genuinly offent people of other fanatical faiths.
3: The grammer in the bible is ******** hilarious!!!

The bible is in like ye old english. like Romeo and julliet. I've been around many christians and they take apart eash verse and look at it as one thing. not a peice to a puzzle. In church the'll read one verse and some people don't get that there is a bigger story. I think that the bible is a lousy piece of literature

I get'cha to a point. I think of it more like "How do you know you only like this, if you ain't had nothing else." I read a lot of different religions, and the only ones that that made sense to me were the asian ones. But they were damn near atheist anyway, so given all my options atheism made the most sense. But at least I did see if another made more, so I can say I made an 'educated' descision. Ya know?

... being an atheist, I think, let's people open their minds to other religions and to accept them... me, for instance have friends of all religions:christian, Wiccan, Buddhist, Satanist, and a few others... these religions would have quite a hard time getting along with each other, but for atheists, its rather easy. Do any of you have problems with other religions? just curious. oh, and its very odd how christians say we're going to Hell if we don't believe in God... well, we wouldn't believe in hell, either, now would we? no point in arguing with them; they just don't understand us... xd xp

Hell? Me? Go to gell??? *looks innocent*

I believe in a Hell... it inhabits the land of where I write, and it's a very dangerous place, and for 24/7 you are forced to listen to christains tell you all this stupid s**t and try and convert you, only you can't talk and tell them why they're wrong or defend yourself from their attacks.... scary.... exactly why I'm paranoid.

Anyway, here's a question that people after this can answer if they have any ideas/will to do so. What drives Christains to believe in their religion? What keeps them to it? (besides stupidity/willful ignorance) Thanks.

Religions are interesting. So is mythology and folklore.

And as to what makes someone believe...You assume it's true because you've been told so and you get to the point where you actually just believe and stop questioning...It's been drilled in your head so much you actually feel bad or 'wrong' for doubting. It's acceptable as sort of a "well how can I say I know any better?" sort of thing. And there are so many vague loops they throw you throw when you ask questions....'god's infinite wisdom' 'we weren't meant to know everything, we just have faith..'

Although I am an Atheist, I've delved through theology and philosophy long and hard. Amoung my favorite religions are Buddhism and Islam, simple because of the message they portray. I find both to be less deceiving that mainstream Christianity, as well as less likely to produce a hypocritical parish. However, I've read the Bible cover to cover, first in English, then in traditional Latin. I'm in the process of learning Aramaic and Hewbrew as well, so I can really read the original texts rather than translations. The Koran is interesting to leaf through as well, I picked up Arabic just for the sake of being able to read it in it'ss entirety. The original religions was quite progressive, during a time period in which women were considered oppressed. My personal favorite philosophy to study it that on Zeno, and the Greek Stoics who practiced self discipline and control over the rational mind, in retaliation to Plato's concept of perfection existing within coloquial thought processes.

Really, I've studied religion from a scholorly standpoint, rather that a theologian's one. A thesis of mine on the subject of the Roman Cathlolic Church vs. Eastern Orthadox was published by our local newspaper in a special, and another is currently in the works regarding how all religions were created to fufill some human need or want.

studying religions can also give you an edge white debating. Loo kat Mike Malloy of Air America. His family were right wing evangelicals and he use to be very relgious. He knows a lot about the bible. Now he is a far left atheist with his radio show and is able to use quotes and stories from the bible against bible thumpers when appropriate.
