Every responsible journalist should always hold research as their first proiority, a simple fact...

-Elle's been blessed by Holmol-
X'DD
-showers confetti on you, just for being awsome-

Don't worry, I'm sure she'll get her fair share of e-mails on fans of Dir en grey and their "thoughts" on the article, but not from me. I just had to whine (to use the word of the moment) a little to get out some frustration online and this was the healthiest way I could think of on short notice...
<33

Hm, I'm guessin gthat Blind is one of those understanding people who don't get as worked up as me so easily... I applaud you for that, I've always struggled with stuff like that, but I still maintain that her comparison with Japanese and English style music is wrong. Sorry, but that's how I feel.

I'm obviously not talking about the "language" itself, since Kyo does occassionally sing in English for some songs, but I mean even the whole cultural genre thing. You can't categorize those different types of music with "Amierican-labels", they're two completely different worlds music-wise...

Oh, I get worked up quite easily about things. I have a large temper, but I think this is something that isn't so much my problem.

Labels are labels. Music is music. Thats it. What is Diru as a lable to everyone here then? Rock? Metal? I mean really has anyone ever put a good thought into that instead of just flippin out when Dir en grey is called pop? According to our "American lables", even here in CANADA, they'd be rock/metal, or alternative. That is if people looked past the fact that they're Japanese. They could be found right by bands like Metallica, Korn, or maybe even Avenged Sevenfold, and you know, I would like that. To be able to go to the local HMV, or whatever, go to the rock/metal/alternative section like I always do, and to be able to find Dir en grey along withthe rest of my favorite bands. Most people here must have listened to Metallica before if they're going to argue the fact that Diru isn't like them, right? Well I want you to all pull out your Withering to Death CDs and turn it to Spilled Milk. Listen to the start of the song and tell me it doesn't sound remotly like something Metallica might do.

Mmm, smell the approaching trucks upon trucks of hate-mail.

"-where vocalist Kyo sings sweetly before breaking into troat-bursting screams"
that was the only bit I liked somewhat.

The Karou thing is completely unacceptable..I wonder what would happen if they read this.

Freaking awesome picture at least.

Um, actually, I was pretty sure that it was a girl... now that you mention it though...
But yeah, it's absolutely uncanny how similar "she" could pass of as Kyo!
:'O

@ Blind: Tis true I guess, I mean I can see your point. (A fellow Canadian? <33) What I should probably stress on is the context this writer decided to used the whole music labeling in. On an unbiased front like the HMV placing or something as you said, yah I totally agree, think that's not only alright but kinda necessary... but reading this article, it was just irking me how everything was said with such a negative connotation especially this in particular.

Nurse Vodka

Kyo's like. . . SuperEngrishMan O:

Kyo's Engrish rivals that of Gackt. sweatdrop And I love him for it all the more. heart

I find this article monstrously irritating, but I don't see why we all should bother bitching about it other than just to vent. I mean, it's sort of the response we should expect from Western non-fans who wouldn't know the difference between Diru and Utada Hikaru (scary thought, scary thought). The spelling problems make me want to stab whoever wrote that thing with a SPORK, but I guess that's to be expected as well.

But honestly... KAROU????? scream

That picture made my life a beautiful place, though. I've never seen that one before. eek heart heart heart

As for the so-called 'comparisons' with other bands, and I believe this was mentioned previously, they aren't really comparing them all that much. I mean, if you were trying to describe Diru or another foreign band to someone completely ignorant to the entire concept, wouldn't you point out similarities to things those people are already familiar with and like?
The start of the Christian religion is a good example of that... *hides from the Pope*

I've seen that girl before. There's also another Japanese girl who looks exactly like him. That girl I can still see the difference, but this other cosplayer...OMG. I seriously thought she was him when my friend showed me her. I wish I had the link...but I don't crying

In response to the article, I'm basically just going to say I agree pretty much with everything that's been said already. What can you do though. You're always going to have people who don't know about the music or aren't good enough journalists to do research and fact check before they put out their article. It's sad but true. >>

Of course there's nothing you can do about it... except for vent, which is exactly why I created this thread! :'DD
-twirls-

<33
And I gotta say, it's kinda working, just getting it all out there is a good enough solution for me...
-falls-

(But again, I'm mostly just upset about the lack of research and professionalism that can be published in a somewhat well-known magazine like this...)
-dies-

Iyami!!
You haaaavve to find the link!!
You can't just tell someone this, and then say that we can't see her...

But I have no idea where it is! My friend found it one time by doing random cosplay searches. ;-; I have absolutely nooooooooo idea where she even started to do searches. I think it went through Livejournal then through like ten thousand sites before she found this girl crying . I'M SO SORRY!!! -emoemo- -(;A wink -

Well she does have some valid info and makes a point but I can't really believe she used the term, "booty shaking". stare I can see how she would want to compare them to 80's metal due to the fact that she IS writing a piece for an (im guessing) american publication. Likening them to another J-Rock band wouldn't have any meaning to her audiance so she describes them in a way that they could relate to. Linkin Park, Tool, and Metallica are part of her publications readers so I can't really hold it against her for (in my mind) trying to increase intrest in the band. I may not agree with her and I don't care for her style but in the end, it's her article.

I just love how the "translation" part is actually sung in english. A great deal of their songs are usually sung in both english AND japanese. People really do need to do research before hand

I hate to ask, but could someone post the link to the article on this page, or if it wasn't a link, could you PM it to me? My stupid Babysitter blocks that page, so I can't read it. stressed

She was a pretty bad journalist. She never really made her point, and she obviously had no idea what she was talking about. 3nodding
