Cobalt Anyone else sightread in their choirs using solfege? Just curious. Yeah. My teacher is a Nazi about sightreading on do re mi. It's not that difficult if you've been doing it for awhile. It definitely gets better with practice.

Yay Solfedge!! Its kind of a curse that I can sing song in solfedge. Its complicated if you have no idea what you are talkin about.
funny story! I am trying to start a choir trio at my church with my freinds (both rednecks) I tried to explain bass to one of them and:
me-the thing about singing bass is you always have to remind us of where Do is.
Jay-then I get to shoot it right?
Me-*sigh* you always have to keep the tonic (the Do) in mind,
Jay- then I can drink it??
I hit him with the hymnal I have.

Yeah, our choir teacher is ver strict that we learn to sight read.
We have the second best choir in our district, but the other school their teacher just plays the notes for them. Now they have great musicality with dynamics and blend, but they don't have very good musicianship with sight reading.

Yes, our choir uses solfege quite a bit. We use it for a warm-up, and sight-reading, mostly. And it's good when you pratice singing vowels round and dark.

Yay for so many people using solfege! heart My high school choir never used it, but my college choir relies on it, and I think it's definitely a superior method of learning. Instead of learning pitches by rote when the teacher plunks them on the piano, choristers actually read the music, which is infinitely better for musicianship, time, ease of learning, and flexibility in a rehearsal.
Too often, singers get the reputation that we can't read music, we're only divas who think the music stops when we're not singing, and a whole lot of other things besides. While unfortunately much of this is rooted in truth, it's satisfying to know that there are other choirs out there who actually teach something. 3nodding

Our teacher has us doing solfege going in like thirds and fourts and fifths up and down; it gets confusing once and a while xp

SOLFEDGE! ITS SO FUN! But I kinda, actually, I DO stink at it. I am trying to get better at it though, cuz i have to know how to sight read to get into the advanced choir that I wanna be in next year.

Yay solfege!
DoReMiFaSoLaTiDo!
I love the hands signs! Everyone in my choir knows it, but I don't read in solfege, I just sightread by feel, basically.
