Masks. Beautiful masks that seemed to call with an aching cry. Masks meant to be paraded at a party, thousands and thousands of lives spend poured into making them objects of beauty. Masks that wanted more than to lie there, dust gathering on the surface with no admiring glance.

Even a museum was better than this...

Masks that glowed softly, a keen edge as they called out privately to the existing fae. Three more. Three more faces that could be molded by the masks...

If only they would give in and put them on.

The mask did suit Varian, and with a slightly satisfied sigh, something seemed to click into place.

He grinned at both Varian and Alice, and went to pick the mask that he loved. The black cat. It had real-looking whiskers too! It was awesome! He turned it about for a moment or two, and then, with his tail lashing happily, popped the mask onto his face, and tied it tightly behind his head with the ribbons provided for such a purpose.

"How do I look?"

Not as good as Varian, of course.

That was his instantaneous response to such an act. Though at least he had gained enough self control that he didn't say it. Instead, he contained his vanity and spoke a few words in the hopes that they would pass for polite.

"It matches you."

Well, it was sort of a compliment. Probably the best the arrogant boy was going to give, anyway.

Scanning the othe masks skeptically, he finally reached in and pulled one out - then turned to Alice and offered it to her.

"If we're all going to be wearing then, you'll need one as well."

Why were they all wearing them? Who knew. But this little fae certainly had the intention of sneaking his out. Stealing, some might call it - to him, it was just something he wanted. So he'd take it.

((Hehe, you can decide how it looks, Donna))

The loom was set down with great care. Once each string was undone about her digits, Alice chose but a few to intertwine through two small punctures made at either side of the mask. She took it from Varian and again bobbed a curtsey, before slipping the thin, silk ribbon beneath her raven tresses and securing it.

It was anything but plain. The mask was delicately designed as a masquerade mask ought to be, sporting perhaps countless designs woven in obsidian accent, while set upon the silver backdrop that all but blended with her – causing the female fae to look quite the curious creature. The ribbon cascaded through her hair, and having finally found it in comfort, her eyes opened beneath it to peer out again at the others.

Unlike Tybalt, she didn’t ask for Varian’s opinion of her attire. Instead, she opted for a different approach to the meaning. “I hope it is pleasing to you…You did such a marvelous job in choosing it, for me.” Another curtsey, that lowered her just enough to snatch up the loom again and bury her fingertips in the silken strands.

Gorgeous masks, really. They were all really people. And as more of them went one, the fae could feel a slight heat. Nothing alarming, but the kind of heat that rises when one blushes, something slow and soft to the surface. Except this time, they were fastening something on.

The masks.

The masks were fastened onto skin the same way hair was, taught, part of it but with no feeling until one tried to pull it out. Then it hurt.

And approving nod was what Varian gave to Alice, at her response. Very nice. The mask was good, and her response was even better - he was the sort of child that loved it when people used good manners with him.

Even if he didn't really have them.

Surveying the room, the blonde fae decided he was content with it. He had his mask, and had no interest in any of the dated looking artifacts here - they were nothing special, in his mind. Speculating on how, exactly to sneak the mask out, he came upon an idea.

His clothing was loose enough - surely he could hide it in them.

Though he encountered a slight problem. Reaching up to remove it - and it wouldn't come off. What first had been a slight tug, became a more insistant pull before he let go with a startled sound of pain.

And for once, he broke his usual 'refined' composure for confusion.

"It's stuck!"

At this point, the only one who HADN'T put on a mask was Romeo. He knew something like this would happen if he did. So he'd refrained from his curiousity. He hissed slightly, and ran over to his brother, who had made the same discovery as Varian. He tried to HELP pull the cat mask off.

"Ow! ROMEO! OW! STOP ALREADY! It hurts..." The last was quieter.

Romeo looked around wildly for something to help with getting the masks off his friends - then remembered. He tried to WILL the masks off - that didn't work, and if he touched them again... well, he had to try. He reached up to try and pull Varian's off.

(( twisted ))

And the mask gave. At the corner, but with a slightly sickening lurch, the kind that comes from pulling a bandaid too quickly, a squelch that is barely diminished by the impact of the moment.

A little bit, and if Romeo pulled more, if Varian would let him pull more, then entire thing would come up.

But with horrible repurcussions.

Because the skin could come off too, enough to leave gashes on the flesh, markings too horrific to be seen by children.

Because they were children.

((none of the other ones will come off. They will hurt like HELL. And the masks might squeal, like mice hanging on for dear life.))

Alice wasn't even attempting such. Simply by watching the others - she knew her own would do the same, and that was not something she wanted to experiance. The words fell quietly. "Cursed...the masks are cursed, aren't they?"

With careful hand, she ran her slender fingertips beneath the mask to find that it had completely grafted to her flesh. Inch by inch they trailed, until having sattisfied her claim, the female shook her head a little. "You really shouldn't pull anymore, or you're going to hurt yourselves worse. Besides," Her gaze fell upon the rest of the masks. "Maybe there's some special order they have to come off, or special thing we have to do. Like in Zelda!"

It was with a gasp of pain that Varian yelped to Romeo,

"Stop!"

The mask probably would come off...but that hurt! Give the vain child a little bit longer, and he'd probably be willing to risk it - but right now, it hurt and he didn't like it. At least his expression wasn't visible to the others - it actually was a bit nervous.

Something he didn't often let on his face.

Yet, all the same, he still narrowed his eyes at Alice - letting his fear about the the mask stuck on his face make him seem angry.

"Like what?"

Tybalt was rubbing on the ground, trying to get it off.

"Cursed or not, it HURTS!" he mewed pitifully, and tried rolling on the ground to get the thing off his face.

Romeo shook his head in disbelief, and backed off. He didn't want to cause them pain...

"What should I do?!"

With an arched brow, she answered both querries at once. "Legend of Zelda - it's a game, and I think we should stay calm. If we try to rip them off, we could really get messed up..." A sigh fell from parted lips, before a sad smile took it's place and she adressed Romeo. "I suppose you were right about touching these things. Sorry I didn't listen to you..."

Varian was not a happy child. The mask was pretty, certainly - but he didn't want it stuck on his face, as his face was far prettier then the mask! How could people know that if he was always wearing a mask?

Resting his hands on his hips, he glared at Alice - though it would be difficult to tell through the mask.

"So what do you suggest we do?"

He didn't think it would be too much of a trial if the others were stuck with their masks. After all, it wasn't like their faces matched the prettiness of his.

Such a vain child.

Romeo looked from Varian back to Alice, from his brother, back to Varian. He hadn't a clue just what was going on. But he did find something a bit interesting that he hadn't noticed before. Tubing... Hmm... He moved over, and pulled on it a bit, finding it just to be decoration. But it DID give him an idea.

"What if we tried running water under the mask to soothe the skin that's already been damaged?" he asked quietly.

Tybalt was still rubbing frantically on the floor, whimpering in fear. He didn't liiiiike this. Not at all!
