Surviving outside the pack... He supposed he knew quite a bit more about that than he ever would've thought fifteen years ago. Vampirism, being Clanless... such things had great effect on one's world. And in societies when compromise simply wasn't an option... He was glad it was over.

"That's unfortunate," he said simply, honestly. "Both that he couldn't find some modicum of peace with you and that he was forced to leave."

"Unfortunate?" Marks snorted, "They didn't kill him, did they?"

"It was best he left. The nightwalkers would of killed him if he stayed." Vain closed his eyes. "Or infected him and changed him into one of them as punishment. Niki' might of killed himself if he became a vampire. You can not judge what is unfortunate Alex with out knowing the person."

Skittles yawned, lids dropping, and burried himself sleepily against the vest. His tails twitched and relaxed as he got comfortable, eyes closing drifted off to sleep.

"Not unfortunate for him alone," Alex attempted to clarify, "But as the manifestation of a world that won't care for all its denizens. It's unfortunate that there couldn't be some way in which all would have been well," he paused, "Though if the world is the best of all possible worlds..."

A little sigh, chewing of the tongue. "You're right," he agreed finally, "I don't understand."

Little metacognitive idiot.

"To make the world perfect everyone would have to be the same. Same thoughts, same ideas, same deities. You would have a world of clone citizens all the same gender." Vain shifted Skittles in a more comfortable position. "You may think if would be for the best but it wouldn't be life. There would be no excitement, no differences, no change."

"It hurts to hear stories about this, but it what nature decrees. If there were no death the world would be over populated. No foolish dreamers then the world would still be known as flat." Vain shrugged his shoulders. "Everything has a place."

Alex smiled a bit. Why was it that whenever he edged onto the topic of utopia, people assumed he was talking about perfection? "Death is transcendance," he agreed. One of the reasons why he'd been so upset with... not being able to carry on with either life or death, really. "But isn't it hardest to get along with oneself? I doubt peace can be found in synonymism."

Marks made a low, disgruntled noise and shifted his position to avoid looking at either Rob or Vain, instead focusing on Skittles. When he thought about it, the kid looked like some deranged mix of a rave and the Ren' Faire. Cute, though. In that exploding sort of way.

Whatever it took not to have to listen.

Vain hmmmed. "Perhaps to much perfection in that example. You have to admit it would be easier to deal with. No one jealous because some model can fit in a size two dress and another has to squeeze into an eight. " He smiled back. "Why don't you explain?" He held his hands up in the class quotation movement complete with moving fingers. "What this perfect world is like?"

Skittles was always one to cling. His arms where around Vain waist, as if the other was some sort of teddy bear for him to sleep with. His ears twitched in some sort of rhythm before the whimper and he dwelled deeper into the depth of Vain's vest.

He was so used to hiding reactions - perhaps that was why he leaned forward a little to conceal the smile creeping up on his expression, "Vanity," he said with some degree of amusement, "Impossible for you to forget, perhaps." Then he paused, smile lingering as he thought.

Perfection held no candle to satisfaction... But it was a strange kind of satisfaction that nestled in all hearts at once, a satisfaction he had not yet found and probably wouldn't understand should he ever discover it. Thus he was at something of a loss to describe the (he inserted fingered quotation marks even in his mind) 'perfect world'. "The perfect world..." he managed to trail off, "Is that towards which we strive, perhaps. A... 'vain' hope that we will find something more than mere existence, the inexplicable reality through which we now tread."

Which was always the problem, because the perfect world tended to sound like the end of the world that way.

Yeah... cute.

"Love? Isn't that beyond mere existence?" Vain replied. "Hope, faith. If they are apart of existence then what more would anyone want? The love of family, lover, friend. Hope that no matter how bad something becomes karma will repay us with something beautiful that sooths the pain? Faith that we will never loose who we are. Faith that those we love will always be faithful to us."

Vain set his hand down on Skittles forehead senseing the others distress. "More nightmares kitten?" he mused, rubbing his thumb across Skittles cheek till he stilled.

"Faith, hope and charity, the three heavenly virtues," Alex echoed bemusedly, "Intangible, thus questioned - even though the Pythagorean theorem too is intangible, and that we well know to be true."

Then he shook his head, the faintest semblance of the smile remained. "And of course, virtue, the manifestation of which would make the 'perfect world'. But we don't find that often and certainly not everywhere at once. Not to challenge the free will of man, because we're meaningless as the 'perfect world' you spoke of before without the ability to choose or deny those virtues. It's just..." he shook his head again, "These virtues validate us if we choose them, yes, but..." he laughed, "This is the best of all possible worlds," he repeated. "My apologies."

Ow. Ow ow ow. Little --he was going to strangle the kid someday. For a couple reasons, not just having to listen to him. But again, no. Not an option. Because going out of his way to get rid of Rob meant that Rob was a problem... and Marks far preferred the version where Rob was inconsequential.

"Nightmares?" he asked offhandedly, in an attempt to change the subject.

"Oh bother," Alex murmured irritably, covering his eyes with a hand, "Thought I'd gotten out of that habit."

On the bright side, he recognized it as a bad habit. And didn't really bother apologizing to the people he knew. Possibly because he wasn't afraid of... oh, whatever - NO THINKING ABOUT THE KID. Stupid Marks. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

"There's water in the sink," he offered lamely. "You planning to dunk him in it or something?"

"No, a dunk in the sink might be for the best." Vain stood and ran his fingers across the faucet. "Or something like that. Is the water pure though?" He muttered turning on the water the spray running across his fingers as he fidled with the knobs till it was cool.

"I'm sure you are use to all sorts of strange seems. Vampires, rencarnation, perhaps others." Vain turned wolf smile on his face. "Two winged angels, it's alright kid , at least you know it is a bad habit. So what you see is kept here." Agile fingers started to undo the knoted tie on his shirt.

"Hunh," said Marks speculatively, "And he pays you to do this sorta thing?" read: where do I sign up? Dunking people in sinks? This is fun.

"The water ought to be clean," Alex muttered through a mild blush, eager to escape old habits. "And I don't know if ever it's possible to be 'used' to strange, not by definition - life on Gaia sort of dulls the senses to the extraordinary, anyway. Everything's so odd here... everyone has the strangest story."
