Lately I've been hearing the term Asian used with people and Oriental being used with inanimate objects...but only some things. Like:
Those Asians...
Oriental rug...
Oriental food, but Asian cuisine
So...I don't know. I think it just depends on the person's preference, although I get highly offended when someone calls Asian people Orientals.
...and I'm as white and cornfed as they come!
Interesting point, yet it has a contradiction. Because from what I am reading, is that you dislike Oriental people being called "Orientals" because there are items that are referred to as "oriental" yet, being American myself, I see no issue with this, because aren't hamburgers referred to as "American food" and we have "American cars" and there are also "European cars" and "Italian food" yet we still call Europeans Europeans, Italians Italians, and Americans Americans.

The word "Orientals" derives from that in which their people are located, in the Orient, whereas we are (in America) referred to as living in the "Occident" therefore being, "Occidentals" (also known as westerners). Yet, that is not a term used much or at all even in casual conversation, because our cultures clash so much with that of neighboring countries that we aren't referred to as one unit of people. Instead we specify who we are speaking about, such as "Americans" or "Brazilians" or even "Mexicans". Which is why "Asians" also separate themselves from other places of the Orient, such as in India. Because the "Asian" countries, such as Japan, China, Korea, Phillipines, and so forth may share differences in culture, but those cultures are far more closely related than what may be of say America and Mexico. But those countries cultures are extremely separate from that of say India, and Afghanistan, so they don't refer to these said countries as "Asians" because they aren't enough like them to have that title. Instead they are either "Indians" or "Afghanistanians", which, in thinking this way, using the term Asian may be more derogatory than that of the term "Oriental" because it is singling one group out from that of an entire continent and pinpointing one or two aspects on that one "group" because of said stereotypes that consider one to be "Asian"

So, in looking at this, the term "Asian" refers to a group of specific people from the area of the Orient. While the term "Orientals" refers to everyone in that location. Therefore, in being "Asian" you are "Oriental" and thus, these terms are the same yet different, depending on where or where not you may be from. So, if you are offended by the term "Oriental" would that not, in fact, be saying that you are also offended by the term "Asian", or do you not consider yourself Oriental? Even though that is where your ancestors may have came from. But, if you do not consider yourself "Oriental" you would be also denying yourself of being an "Asian" therefore, what are you? Whatever you please, I suppose.

(Side note: The word Orientals means "Of or relating to the countries of the Orient or their peoples or cultures; eastern"
Whilist Occidentals means "Of or relating to the countries of the Occident or their peoples or cultures; western"

Thus "Oriental rugs" because they hail from that of the Orient.)

What I find funny is when people like to call asians "chinese", even when they're like Korean or Japanese etc. Now thats sad.

Well, to be perfectly honest, I never once called myself "Asian"... when people asked me what race I am, I responded with an: "I'm Korean".

As for "orientals" versus "Asians", if you think about it historically, the terminology "oriental" was applied to the Turks, Persians, and other countries around those countries. Have no idea why people like to call asians "asian"... other than the fact that it derived from the name of the continent.

I have to agree and disagree (a little bit) with Korean Turtle. It's true that us so-called "Asians" don't get along with each other. Like he said, Koreans hate the Chinese AND the Japanese, the Japanese hate the Koreans and Chinese, Koreans hate the Vietnamese (at least from what I heard from my parents), and the Vietnamese hate the Chinese. Taiwanese hate China, and so on.

However, having been raised in Korea and watched Korean television for twelve years, the terminology "Asian" does come out rather frequently. Except in Korea, everyone who says "Asian" say it as: "ah-shee-ah". The white-washed Koreans say it in this slangish way, which I can't describe, because I never immitated.

bellesketcha: Yeah. It's kinda funny, since most "westerners" can't really tell the difference between the Koreans, Japanese, and the Chinese. One of my friends told me a funny story about a bunch of British people asking him where he was from. They first asked him if he was Chinese, then Japanese, and then they skipped Korean, and went on to Vietnamese, and never once thought about him being Korean. That was hilarious.

Hm well geographically Asia is considered quite a large land mass. Its just that in society when we refer to Asian we mean Japanese, Chinese or Korean. I really don't know why that's the case it just is.

I dunno, 'Asians', regardless of logical meaning, has sort of come to mean East Asians.

Is there something offensive about 'Oriental'? Usually, when I'm trying to be specific about the region of Asia, I'll use that word, and I never though there was anything mean about the word.

I apologize, but Orientals refers to anyone living within the orient, look it up. Anywhere, I wrote a paper on this a while back, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Saudi Arabians, they are all Orientals, due to the fact that they live in the Orient.

What does seeing it on TV have to do with this topic? Please emphasize.

And if I may also point out, this term "white-washed", it sounds more discriminatory and possibly offensive than any other term that I have seen yet.

This here, is a matter of ignorance on the part of some Americans who care for no one but themselves, which is why alot of people in Asian countries don't quite like Americans, because of prejudices that they have with one another, but that is a separate topic altogether.

There really isn't anything offensive about it, except for some people. Because they believe you are calling them a "rug" or a "vase" because there are Oriental rugs and vases. Yet, if we kept this same logic, calling me American would mean I'm a hamburger, or a local McDonald's. Which doesn't make sense.

This would also encourage one to believe that all Asians are cars. :3

kaze no sakura, I've had that problem with people too, most people usually skip over Korean when they ask me about my race. It's sometimes fun to play the guessing game with them.

The best way to handle the situation is to take it lightly. I have once been asked by a lady if the right term would be "oriental or asian", I usually identify myself as my ethnicity (Korean), but I've always considered "Asian" to be the right term as well.

AngelicAirman, thank you for clearing it up, not a lot of people (at least where I live) usually take the time to understand.
