Maybe it's not that he died and regenerated so much as that he sacrificed his regeneration to do something - perhaps protect his TARDIS or destroy the Dalek fleet or something along those lines.

In contrast the Timelords wouldn't have known about/wouldn't have had a chance to do whatever this act was. I would like to know what happened to all those off-world Timelords though... I can understand the ones on Gallifrey dying but not the rest. Unless they all came back to fight - except for the Doctor. Perhaps he was too scared. Or came too late... Who knows?

Well, what seems to be accepted by most fans is...
The Daleks go to Gallifrey with the entire fleet to finally destroy the Time Lords. All Time Lords are called back to protect their homeworld. In a last ditch effort, they make a super weapon that will kill everyone near and around Gallifrey. Kill everyone to the extent that they can't even regenerate. The Doctor is the one who will activate it. Gallifrey is about to fall and everyone has been killed or is about to die. The Doctor activiates it, and should die too, but the Tardis saves him. Instead of completely dieing, he is able to regenerate.

The rest of the TARDIS' must really not like their owners if they let 'em all fry.

I would like to add in:

* The day Susan was left behind.

Twas the beginning of the end for the Time Travelling family...

I remember that! The cybermen were funny.

The Doctor being rejected by K-9 mkI in favour of Leela when she stayed on Gallifrey. He he he...
I think the death of Adric was supposed to be dramatic and heart-wrenchingly tragic, but it wasn't. Maybe it was just me. I never really liked him anyway.
The various explosions and fake lasers. Those were the best. And the fantastic actors dying after being hit with a fake laser. Amazing.

Top Ten Moments Of Heart-Stopping Drama

Ok so I haven't actually thought up 10 yet, I've only thought up 3 (and 1 of them only cos I was watching Earthshock last night) but the 10 part is not really important. I just wanted to know what other people thought of as the best moments of drama (or horror or action etc) in Doctor Who. This includes the Classic series and the New series - but it doesn't include moments of romance! This isn't anti-romance, I just thought I might start up a seperate thread for that (since it's become such a big part of the show now).

Anyway here are my moments so far:

* The First Doctor's death followed by the first ever regeneration.
* The death of Adric (and arguably the death of the dinosaurs too - though I noticed no-one cried over them).
* The first ever appearance of the Timelords.

Anyone else got any?

Totally agree with the first ever regeneration!

i would have to say how no one know how the eight doctor died and regenerated...people thought he had dies in the time war, but the question is why dont they show part of the time war were the doctor regenerates?

Yes, I think it is a great tragedy that the 8th Doctor was denied a regeneration scene and was given only one story and a companion no one really liked that much. Everyone used to talk about how awful it was that the 6th Doctor was denied a regenration scene (I seem to remember that he was so angry about the way he'd been treated by JNT at the end that he didn't want to come back, not even to regenerate, but I couldn't swear to it.)
Actually your right, he refused to film the regeneration scene with sylvester and has never actually watched the regeneration scene. EVER eek

Does it even count as a scene? It's the most unimpressive of the regenerations. Unsurprisingly.

I totally support Colin Baker for standing up for himself but I kinda feel sorry for McCoy cos it doesn't make his incarnation look very welcome...

I suppose it's all long in the past now.

The first time the Daleks were seen climbing stairs in Remembrance Of The Daleks. Remembrance is definitely my favourite Doctor Who story out of all the ones I've seen. I just love the Seventh Doc.

That seems to be a big favourite on the surprising moments scale. It's funny... I never really found it that surprising. I guess I always just thought of the Daleks as one of those ultimate enemies who were bound to conquer stairs eventually. whee

I always thought them that way too, it was just the fact that they had never been seen doing it before in the show's, at that point, 25 year history.

* When the ninth Doctor meets the Daleks for the first time
* When Rose and the ninth doctor kiss (My heart jumped... very sweet... whee )
* When the doctor meets up with Sarah Jane again
*When Rose's mum slaps the dctor (Ok, it wasn't dramatic, but it was hilarious!) rofl

* The opening of The Dalek Invasion of Earth: Daleks strolling around London, and a Dalek coming out of the river Thames (what the heck was it doing there anyway, having a bit of a swim? confused ).

* The Cybermen emerging from their hibernation in Tomb of the Cybermen.

* Mannequins coming to life and shooting random people in Spearhead from Space.

* The Doctor's fist-fight within the Matrix, in The Deadly Assassin.

* The climax of The Caves of Androzani, where pretty much everyone and his mother gets what's coming to him.

* The scene with the two grave-robbers meeting the guy in a glass Dalek in Revelation of the Daleks.

* Ace losing faith in the Doctor near the end of Curse of Fenric.

* The Doctor busts out of the morgue in The Enemy Within. Okay, that wasn't so great, but I couldn't think of anything else...

* The Doctor going bonkers upon first encountering the Dalek in Dalek.

* The 10th Doctor's dramatic emergence from the TARDIS to fight the Sycorax in The Christmas Invasion.

God, trying to come up with one for every Doctor was pretty darn difficult!

I always forget that it's (unofficially) called "The Enemy Within" - I always just think of it as the TV movie.

Congrats on getting one for each Doctor. Though I'm not sure about the Cybermen coming out of the tombs. They moved so... so... slowly... And then they kept repeating that scene... And reversing it....

Personally I would go for the psycho Cybermen in the sewers in The Invasion. Or of course the main invasion itself.
