Mismatched eyes grew wide with horror as he came up just inches short of stopping her. If the sudden appearance of the young female didn't startle the herd enough, what would happen if a practically full grown, male lion appeared? He winced lightly as his shoulder rammed into the rock as he attempted to duck out of sight and skid to a stop at the same time. This wasn't good.

Sure enough, the sight of the young lioness was enough to send the herd of large, easily annoyed animals into a frenzy. They stomped heavily on the ground, threatening to flatten the young princess. The birds that were resting on the creature's backs took flight in annoyance, calling out to each other.

Tafari growled, trying to figure out what to do. Try to save Isoke and provoke the animals even more, or hope that she could make it out alright? He shook his head, getting the thought out of his head. Of course he had to save her! What was he thinking? He just had to... Be careful about it.

The light silver male stepped cautiously up on the rock, his sharp, white teeth bared as he quickly scanned the herd. They were already kicking up a lot of dirt, making it difficult to see anything below their knees. Isoke... Where was she? She was smart enough to stay safe until he got there, right?

There! Catching a glimpse of the female's dark pelt, he leap forward. The reaction he was expecting from the herd was accurate. They reared up in anger and dropped their horns, threatening to stab at the lion if he got too close. "Isoke!" he called, trying to make the creatures make a path. They were too busy snorting and making a fuss to hear him. Frustrated and frightened for Isoke's life, Tafari took in a deep breath, letting it out in one loud, earsplitting roar.

The animals reared back, trying to move away from the large, silver lion. Tafari blinked, trying to slow down his labored breathing. W-what just happened?

Her breathing labored, the juvenile looked on with wide eyes, never once realizing just how much trouble she could get into in her life. As the creatures started to stop, her heartbeat increased as well, and suddenly her eyes filled with tears. It was at that point she felt the liquid blure her vision and a sob escaped her maw for the first time in her life. At that moment, she felt what raw fear was.

"This is not fun!" She mewed out a moment later, before raising her voice "Tafari! Help!" All at once she used his name in desperation, his whole name, and suddenly curled in a ball and started to shake. The hooves were stomping so hard she seemed to bounce lightly like the small pebbles around her, and her ears flattened at the noise. Eyes shut tightly, she could hardly breath at the dust, until suddenly her hair stood on end.

Never had anything frightened her so like the roar that came from behind her. Everything seemed to freeze as her eyes opened slowly, the animals around her backing away from the shadow that was behind her. Her body still quaked as the tears spilled down her cheeks and slowly, she craned her neck behind her.

"Tafari?" It came out as nothing more than a squeak, her blue eyes liquid in the light as she tried to get all the answers by just asking his name. She could say nothing else.

What just happened? Tafari blinked, a little uncertain as the animals backed away. He was... He was supposed to be saving Isoke. Coming back to his senses, he quickly stepped forward towards the dust covered princess. He growled at the animals that weren't moving away fast enough. Was that him? Was he the one responsible for frightening the creatures enough to have them back away?

He stepped forward, standing protectively over the younger female."Are you okay?" he breathed softly, his eyes still glaring at the creatures around them. He had never been so terrified in his life. What if something horrible had happened to her? He growled suddenly, swiping out at one of the animals that were still too close. Why did he want to protect her so badly? That was just his job, right? He was supposed to be watching out for the pride. It was because she was part of the pride, right? She was a princess; it was his duty to watch over her, to watch over anyone who needed him.

Why was she making such weird sounds? Tafari finally glanced down at her. W-was she crying? "Are you okay? Are you hurt?" he asked worriedly. What if something really happened to her? He would never forgive himself. It was his fault for this happening. He should have been more careful...

Watching still with her wide-set eyes, tears seemed to stream down unchecked as her heart failed to settle. Never had she seen anyone act that way, it was unheard of at least in her opinion. With him growling as he moved close, she had to remind herself that it was just her Taffy, no one else that he seemed to enact.

As soon as he stepped over her, she found a lump in her throat and scrambled quickly to his side, curling close as she could while still standing. Her cheek resting against his warm pelt, she listened to his growling and felt his muscles shift at the swipe, though kept her eyes closed. All she could feel was him and his scent, there was no thumping or the scent of the dust around her.

"T-t-taf-" She couldn't go farther than that as she continued with another sob, before shaking her head as well as her body started up again, "I want to go home, please take me home Taffy..." Suddenly, everything seemed just too dangerous for her to want to play any longer. All she wanted was for her savior to keep her safe.

Frowning, Tafari stared down at the trembling form next to him. What would he have done if something had happened? He couldn't stop thinking about it... If she had been hurt... He let out a shaky sigh before craning his neck to rest his cheek on her head. "It's okay. I'm here..." he muttered, trying to calm her down, "I won't let anything happen to you..."

He pulled away, raising his head to glance around at the retreating herd. The animals grunted in disapproval, not having wanted to move from their spot. Tafari bared his teeth, almost daring the creatures to come back. He wouldn't let anything happen to her... That was that. .... That was his job, wasn't it? Then why did it feel as though his heart was sinking as he thought that? "Come on... Let's go home," he said softly, waiting for her to move ahead of him. What if something had happened to her...?

Nodding, she moved ahead a few steps before stilling once more, a paw lifting to brush away the liquid that had trailed down her cheeks and resided in her eyes. Turning her head with a soft purr, she smiled easily, seemingly over the scare for the time being.

"I'm sorry...I really wanted to explore with you today, but it just seems I had to go mess it all up with my childishness..." Laughing softly at herself, a haunting sort of noise, she felt cold without him by her side, and quickly moved back close to him, knowing as long as she didn't run ahead, everything will be alright.

"I promise I won't tell anyone what happened today, not even Kenai. I don't want you to get in trouble when you were the one to save me."

Tafari followed, making sure to keep an eye both on her and the retreating herd. He let out a sigh, making his way up the hill behind her. Was she okay? "You don't have to be sorry, it was my fault this happened," he said, glancing over his shoulder to make sure they weren't being followed. He suddenly felt something warm move closer to him. Tafari blinked, looking down at Isoke. He smiled lightly, she was so care free. She shouldn't let something like this change the way she thought.

"You shouldn't worry," he said reassuringly, "I won't let anything happen to you, okay? Remember that." She was still a kid. She needed to be told things like that, right? Besides, he would rather die than break a promise he made.
