Cress Albane The thing that actually attracted my to this thread was the word "Canadian" ...and "Celsius". Hahaha, Celsius is a cool name, it's also another of my video game character's name(s). Um, er, as fort he Poll, who's Tim Horton? confused Is it that one guy that made that one animated movie with a dead bride and a guymarryibng each other? Oh snapz, that's Tim Burton! gonk Aoife What is with the Tim Horton's thing? Is it a complaint? I don't understand you Canadians! I agree with Deehe though, metric system isn't something I like either. I DID enjoy watching CBC for Olympic coverage better than what we got locally... Tim Horton was a Maple Leafs hockey player in the 1950s & 60s, a doughnut and coffee shop was opened in his name in 1964, and has since grown across Canada and even into Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts. It now has 2,600 location in Canada and almost 300 in the US. People here like the crude joke about the fact that Timbit (doughnut holes) were intoduced about a year after Tim had died in car accident in 1974. Anyways, that's what Tim Hortons is. Coffee and Doughnuts. Tastier than Crispy Cremes too, I might add. There was this huge interest in a Crispy Creme opening in Canada, near were I live, everyone was excited because you Americans are always talking so fondly of them. So there were line ups down the street for one of these Crispy Cremes.... no one I know who tried it ever went back. They were half the size of a Tim Horton doughnut and not as tasty *shrugs shoulders*. Whatever. It all goes to your thighs anyways.
As for metric... well because our parents and grandparents grew up on the same system as American and it has only been since the 70s that Metric has been in place, a lot of 30, 20 year olds, and I suspect teenagers know how to do both systems. If the weather man says there is going to be 5 cm of rain falling tonight, my grandfather asks me how much that is... so I have to know both to be a goddamn converter for people That's what I hate about the metric system... but in another 10, 20 years that won't be a problem anymore. As for comparing the two systems, Metric and Imperial.... I am sorry, but metric does make a hellalot more sense. Celsius with 0 being freezing and 100 being boiling makes a billion times more sense than 32 F and 212 F. And to be able to say 5 mm is way easier to understand and wrap your tongue around than the fractions Americans use with 3/16ths of an inch, etc.

One of my favourite passtimes is to flick the channels between CBC news & NewsNet and then CNN News and Fox, and then to the BCC News(among other national & international newsmedia). You get this fantastic picture of what is going on in the world, and it is fun to watch how one network will report something in one bias way, and then watch the same story in a different bias way! lol But what I actually find most interesting is what the other channels DON'T report on that another one might. What each finds to be news worthy. I can sit there and watch that for hours.

I dunno, I only know recent American president names, and I know more about the Canadian stuff but a lot I got from school this year, and Mr. Frater's poster of Canadian Prime Ministers. sweatdrop
Me: "Why was Mulroney disliked so much?" Teacher "" Me: "Oh. eek "
And for the longest time I didn't even know we had a female Prime Minister, but she didn't really last very long. ^^

Oh, I know, you get inundated with American info that has so little bearing on our daily lives that it drives us all insane. That's the problem with having so many American channels. At the same time, our channels and radio stations are not much better with the "Canadian Content Laws" That they have to play so many minutes of every hour with Canadian content or artist. I want to tie weights to Nickleback's legs, chain them all together, and dump them off a bridge... then I want to strangle Celine Dion then burn her corpse, she is a horrible talentless screamer, and a very ugly woman, to boot. Seriously, if she was hawt, then you could explain the reason for her fame away, but, nope. It's a mystery. She also has a terrible personality, an all round person to dislike. Who else would I like to kill or make disappear....
But, it is true, we have to learn quite a bit of American history, when some Americans can't even place Canada on a map. Then we are accused of having a 'love/hate' relationship with America because we do happen to know some much about them. It's not our fault you are so loud. It's like living next door to a neighbour who likes to have noisey & kinky sex all the time. You can't blame me for knowing the intimate details of your sex life if you scream it through my bedroom wall all the time.
I believe it was PM Pierre Elliott Trudeau who said of America "Living next to you is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant. No matter how friendly and even-tempered is the beast, if I can call it that, one is affected by every twitch and grunt."
But then he had also said of Canada "Canada is a country built against any common, geographic, historic or cultural sense." xd

jobyjoby Kim Campbell around '93, I only remember because the first time I heard of Canada having a Prime Minister she happened to be the one in charge. I heard she works at the White House now... When I was in elementry school we had a mock election the day of the election Kim Campbell won. So all these 7 to 11 year olds were milling around casting votes. It was so cute when I think back on it. We had to learn who was running for each party, and what the party names were. I remember when Kim Campbell got it all the boys in the class were mad. I mean, we were little smelly kids then. xd Yeah, I think it was a minority government, and she was only in power for 3 months.

If I had been alive when he was PM, I would have been a part of Trudeaumania. D: I also quite like his bit about how the state has no business in the bedroom, regarding to sexual preferences. whee
