If need be I can just guess, But it's always good to double check!
If there is a dictionary around I'll look words up. If there isn't a dictionary but I can get my hands on a pen and paper, I'll right them down and look them up later. But if I have both I'll look them up and then right the word and it's meaning down, then later copy it out in my notebook and revise later, so I never forget.
On a side note. Isn't it cool how in The Series of Unfortunate Events the author told the readers what the words mean, like, in context. I thought that was neat.

biggrin OMO: GAH!! I hate looking up words in dictionaries. The only word from a book I've ever looked up was demenses, and only because I wnated to know how to say it! I could figure out what it meant. I can guess what most words mean in fact. Except I'm never really quite sure if I'm right, so it leads to me always second guessing myself when I use bigger words... sweatdrop Maybe I should use the dictionary more often

I usually just guess the meaning from the context, but I always feel like I should look it up. I do if I have a dictionary handy or if I'm not feeling too lazy.
Sometimes if it's a word I see a lot and don't know the exact meaning of then I will, or if it looks like a really cool word then I'll remember it and look it up later.
I can't remember the most recent one, but a good example of a word that I saw a lot and thought was cool (and was completely unsure of the pronunciation) is ennui: a feeling of weariness and dissatisfaction. The book that finally made me look it up was The Gashlycrumb Tinies by Edward Gorey, in which one of the children perishes of ennui. xD

Whenever I come across a word I don't know, I generally look it up in the dictionary. It kind of makes me grumpy though, because then I have to get up from my chair and get the dictionary. (What can I say, I'm lazy) xd

Lately I've been reading a lot of philosophy and theology, so I occasionally find myself forced to look things up, like the first time I stumbled upon the word "logos", which is Greek, but used by English speaking philosophers.
In the past I usually just sorted out the word by context.

Lady of Serenity I'll try to guess what the word means at first, but if I'm in a position to look it up ( I do alot of my reading at school when things get slow ), I'll look it up then. Of course, if I'm too lazy to do that, I'll just remind myself to find out the meaning later on. Same here. But there's usually very few words I need to look up. Usually.

I normally just try to guess. If I can't figure it out, I mark the page with a little piece of paper to return to when I've finished the book. Then I look it up. I don't really remember the last word I didn't understand when I found it in a book. (My classmates make a lot of bad jokes about my secret life as a dictionary. rolleyes )

I guess from context most of the time, but I leave post-it notes as reminders to check later.

Gah, I'm so lazy. Unless I see a word a lot, from many different places, I usually don't bother getting the dictionary out. I think the only time I do is when I ask somebody what it means and they giggle like it's dirty, but won't tell me. Then I find out that there is nothing wrong with the word "masticate", or some such nonsense.
The latest one is "contrition", which I've seen in a MCR song and some crappy book my aunt sent me-I think it was Running With Scissors. I haven't bothered to look it up yet.
