On The Way Home
"I'm tired," Kilayla muttered, pulling on Thief's arm.
"Well, you know exercise is good for you, right? Besides, I don't own a car, I'm sorry," he told her.
"We could have had Dt send us to your house in a limo," she said. Observant little thing.
"I don't like taking charity." Theif was walking {despite constant warnings from both Catzi and Dt not to do this after dark around this area} Kiki home with him.
"I thought charity was when you gave things to poor people," Kilayla said, keeping up easily with Theif's long strides, as he isn't particularly tall. It went silent for a second. "Does that mean you're poor?"
"No," he laughed, eyes glinting in the moonlight as he looked down at Kilayla. I'm not poor. I just don't need any help, you see. I want anyone to give me anything."
This time Kilayla giggled. "I want people to give me things."
Theif smiled with her. "I bet... I'll get you things, of course. Because I'm taking care of you, now."

Problems Just Before Bed
It was only once they got to Theif's house and he'd locked the place up that he thought of his personal sleeping habits. He liked very much to sleep nude. In fact, most if not all of his home-alone-time he spent stark naked. This would probably need an adjustment. He took off his shoes before he went deeper into the house.
"Kiki?" Theif called. She had wandered off to another part of the house.
"What?" she called back from the living room. Theif followed her voice there.
"That's a really rude way to reply to someone who's calling your name," he told her, once he'd caught up. She had her nose buried in the middle of a book from one of the many bookshelves he had in the living room. "You should reply with 'Yes?' People will think highly of you for it."
Kilayla tilted her head to the side, then looked up from the book. Theif saw a question in her eyes, before one came out of her mouth. "How would somebody 'plunge' themselves 'deep between your thighs?'"
Theif's face flared up again, and his eyes bulged. He immedately snatched the book from Kiki, and looked around. "Oh, Kiki!" he exclaimed. He couldn't really think of anything better to say. Smut, vampires, and 'grue-sex' were basically what his bookshelves were filled with. "That's one of those things that I'll just have to explain to you later." He put the book atop a bookshelf, where he hoped Kilayla wouldn't take the time to climb up there to take it down, which was silly, since he had dozens of books like this lining his bookshelves.
"Uhm, do you know how to draw yourself a bath?" he asked.
"You mean, like to take a bath?" she asked in return.
"Yes."
"No."
"Well, come with me, I'll show you. And take off those horrid little mary janes off." She looked at him blankly. "Your shoes. Don't wanna get the carpet dirty. If it gets dirty with outside dirt, we can't roll around on the carpet."
She sat down on the edge of the couch while Theif decided that it'd probably be okay to sleep nude next to her, as long as he stayed under the covers. It never really crossed his mind to give her the other room. She looked around. "Are you sure you don't need charity? Your house is really small."
Theif felt the skin between his right eyebrow and his hairline twitch violently. "No, babydoll, no." He shook his head, as he bent to pick up her shoes. "I'm too paranoid --" he was cut off abruptly by the shock of a little fishnet covered foot making contact with his forehead.
"Stupid! I told you not to call me that!"
Theif went silent for a long moment, before dropping abruptly on his butt in front of her. His tail, for the first time that Kiki had met him went totally limp. His ears flattened slowly against his skull, and then, he began to cry.
Loudly.
"Why woud you do that?" he wept. "Why would you kick me? All I've done since I first saw you is try to help~!"
A look of absolute horror crossed Kilayla's face. "I'm sorry! I just...please don't call me that!"
Theif continued to cry, and then tears began to fill Kiki's eyes. She got up and wrapped her thin, milky little arms around his head, and kissed the spot she'd kicked him. "I didn't mean it, I promise! Please don't be sad!" She petted his ears a bit roughly, but it made him feel better. It seemed like she really was apologetic, so he turned off the waterworks and sniffled quietly.
"I believe you," he said, smiling and hugging her tiny body to his. He then stood, with her in his arms, for the second time that day. "And now, time for your bath."
He took her to the bathroom and showed her how to work the hot and cold water. Then, once he showed her the rest, left her to her own devices with only three warnings. "Don't run the water too high" , "Try not to tear those cute little fishnets" , and "I'm going to leave the door open. Call me when you're done."
Later, she let the water out, and came running into Theif's bedroom {the only room with light comming from it} stark naked. Theif didn't notice it at first, because he was watching some comedy show or other on television with his head peeking out from under the netting hanging above his sleeping cushions.
"I can't dry my back," she told him. He looked at her, and instantly looked away. He didn't want to tell her being naked was wrong, but ...
"You should have the towel wrapped around you at least..." he mumbled. She covered her front with the towel and Theif rubbed the bridge of his nose and smiled. So innocent. He stood up from under the netting and walked over to her, where he took the towel and dried her back for her. He then looked in his closet, remembering that the little thing didn't really bring any clothes with her, and surely didn't expect her to sleep in that dress. He pulled his only sweater out of the closet and pulled it down over her head. "Come on," he said and crawled back under the covers and such.
"You're naked," she said.
That was the only moment that he realized it. Shedding his clothes before he climbed under the netting to settle in for the night was such a totally natural thing for him to do, that he hadn't even really thought about it after Kiki had been in the bath for a while. "Well, it's okay. The covers are covering me now. Come to sleep, okay?"
Kiki crawled under the netting, and Theif made sure she was under a different blanket, so there was no accidental touching. He picked up the remote and clicked off the television.
"We'll start getting you settled in properly starting tomorrow, okay?"
"Okay."
"Goodnight, Kiki."
"Goodnight, Theif."

A Short Little Entry {or, er...maybe not so short...or little...}
When Theif awoke that morning, he felt an urge that he happened to have every once in a while. Without opening his eyes, he tilted his chin into his chest and began to move his arm downward, to sweep the covers away, and expose the result of this urge to the wind.
His hand was almost where he wanted it to be, when he felt someone breathing on the side of his face. He jumped and opened his eyes, turning his head to find himself touching noses with a tousle-haired little green-eyed child-thing. "Good morning~!" she chirped.
Theif twitched one of his ears and moved back a little as the memories of last night flooded back. He reached his hand under the netting around his bed, and peeked through the venetian blinds hanging on the window near where he slept. "It's more like 'Good afternoon,'" he replied to her, trying to ignore the thing hiding under the covers {and that's no refrence to Kiki, who was at this point petting his ears again, sleepily}.
"I'm hungry, Kittyguy," Kilayla said, starting to twist her fingers in Theif's hair. He wished she would stop touching him.
"Go into the bathroom and, er...wash your face. No, in fact, why don't you bathe again? It's nice to feel clean in the morning, right?" The little girl had begun to scratch gently behind one of his ears, and it brought back memories of confusion. He never had known how to react when someone did that.
"Okay," she said, and crawled out from under the netting. For a few seconds, she stood there, stretching and yawning, and Theif had to smile. Kilayla looked so small and fragile and innocent and cute in his sweater, with her curls all over the place, and her eyes all blury...her little fingers peeking out from the too-long sleeves. She then turned and went directly to the bathroom, from what Theif could tell, because the water started running.
Once he was sure she was busy in the bathroom, Theif flipped onto his stomach, despite a bit of protest from below his waistline. He then wiggled until he could reach out and push the door closed, gently.
Seconds later, he was nestled back under his blankets, and his hand was exactly where he wanted it to be...

Not Gonna' Take It
{{ohemmgee, death donttakeherdonttakeherpleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease! TwT}}
Kiki was bored, again. Her new tutor wasn't a very interesting. She wanted to go over to Soco's house and see the library he told her about.
The second room in Theif's house had been converted into a "School Room," he said. And he had told Kilayla that while he was at work she was to listen to the teacher's lessons, and to be polite.
The teacher was a tall, thin woman. She had a pointy nose, and long, straight black hair. She made Kilayla think of a crow. Her name was Miss Creelaw, and she was nice enough, but these math pages she'd given Kilayla were boring her to DEATH.
Kiki sighed and chewed on the metal bit of her pencil's eraser, staring at the last page. It was multiplication. Multiplication wasn't difficult for her, she just thought that numbers didn't seem very friendly. Four was the answer to two times two. Thirty six was the answer of seven times eight. Boring, boring, boring.
"I'm done, Miss Creelaw," she said.
Miss Creelaw looked up from the novel she was reading. "Really?" She stood up from the high-backed cherrywood chair {that Theif bought} behind the shiny cherrywood desk {that Theif bought} and walked over to the identical cherrywood desk that sat facing hers across the room. Creelaw placed a hand on her hip and snatched up the three sheets of mathematics that she'd given to Kilayla. "Well, then, Little Miss Know It All, I have some more advanced pages for you to complete."
Kilayla heaved a heavy, exasperated sigh. "That is so stupid. I don't want to do any more math today," she whined.
Creelaw's brow knit in a tight frown. "Mathematics is not stupid, young lady. It is a necessary part of life, and you will need skill in the subject if you ever want to go anywhere in life. Now, I will give you these pages, and you will finish them!"
Kiki glared up at her tutor, but silently accepted the work.
~~~~
That was the day that Kiki decided she didn't like Miss Crowface very much. She began to ask Theif strange sorts of things at home. Not the usual strange sorts of things like "What does 'rim job' mean?", but strange sorts of things like "How do doorknobs work?" and "What makes the window open like that?" Theif only smiled queerly at her interest in mechanics, swished his tail, and later looked it up on the internet to tell her.
Two weeks later, Kilayla was still doing math. Of course it hadn't been two weeks straight, but in Kiki's mind, that's what it felt like. The math had gone up in level every time she'd finish a page, and by this time, Miss Creelaw was giving her pages of algebra one. The things that she let Kilayla read weren't terribly interesting, either. They were all about stupid kids who did stupid things, or stupid animals who did stupid things. They were, however, better than nothing, so she never complained.
But this math thing was getting out of hand, and Kilayla had set up a little form of insurance so that if things got too far out of hand, she wouldn't have to get all worked up.
"Do these, if you think you can!" Creelaw cried today, tossing down more math pages. She seemed almost angry that Kilayla could do what could with numbers. Perhaps it was that Creelaw thought she didn't appreciate her little "gift." Whatever it was, all Kiki knew was that she was being mean, and it had to stop. Randomly, she heard the phone ringing from the living room.
Kiki scooted down off of her chair, and onto the carpet in her bare feet. She'd taken to wearing her hair in two ponytails, and Theif had taken to not cutting her hair, which resulted in her bangs falling into her eyes and trendles of hair that fell free from the tails framing her face. She didn't know if she looked as angry as she felt, but she hoped so as she glared up at Crowface through her bangs.
"I'm not doing any more math today!" She cried shrilly, stamping. "It's making me crazy~!" Kiki grabbed the sides of her head for emphasis.
Suddenly, Creelaw's dark eyes seemed to blacken. In an instant thereafter, her long, thin hand shot out and grabbed Kiki's tiny shoulder in a surprisingly tight grip. "You sit down, and do these, NOW." Creelaw growled, shaking Kiki twice, sharply.
Kiki felt an overwhelming sense of shock and anger consume her. She turned her head and bit down on Creelaw's hand as hard as she could. In response, the woman smacked her so hard, the next thing she knew her face was in the carpet. She then heard the weirdest sound. It was like some strange mix between a squeek and a scream and a growl. After a second or two, she realized the sound was comming from her.
Kilayla's first urge was to get up and immedately start trying to pummel the woman, but she knew better. She had just been smacked down. And besides, she knew it would come to this one day, and that is why she implemented her "insurance." She lifted herself to her knees and crawled out the door.
"Where do you think you're going, you little heathen!?!" Creelaw was growling as Kiki crossed the carpet to the door. Kilayla simply stood and stuck her tongue out, slamming the door. She then proceeded to lock it from the outside.
"No, you're a towel," Kilayla replied to the "heathen" remark from the other side of the door. Creelaw went to shake the knob on the door from her side only to have it fall off in her hand. It had been stuck on with chewing gum and superglue to the keyhole that connected to the lock on the other side.
"What have you done, you little beast?!? Let me out of here, right now!!!" Creelaw banged on the door. "You let me out of here, or so help me God, I'll break this door down." Kiki giggled and hoped for the best. Theif had told her once that his doors were oak, and very heavy...they shouldn't for any reason just break down, why do you ask? And besides, the door opened inward. What's that about the windows? They're bulletproof. No one can break in and get us, babydoll.
~~~~
Hours later, Creelaw was quiet, and Kilayla was sitting outside on the step waiting for Theif to come home. When he did she ran to him and threw her arms about his waist. Theif smiled and hugged her back tightly. "I'm glad you're back!" she said.
Theif smiled and twithed one of his ears. "I'm glad to be back. Now, I get to relax." He sighed. And started to open the door. Kiki grabbed his hand.
"No, wait. Didn't you say you were gonna take me to the movies today?" Theif tilted his head to the side and smiled at her, with a slightly puzzled look on his face.
"Did I?"
"Yeah! And the one I wanna see starts soon, so we have to go now!" Kiki insisted.
Theif laughed, shook his head, sighed. "Anything for you, babydoll," he smiled.
"Don't call me that." she replied.
And they went.
~~~~
The movie lasted over two hours. Then, Kiki and Theif stayed another two hours to sneak into a different movie. Then a couple more hours to play in the arcade and go out for dinner. By the time they got back, Kiki was so exhausted, she completely forgot about the woman she had locked in the house, so Kiki proceeded to go into the bathroom and draw herself a bath. She was in the tub when she heard the banging and yelling again. Her heart seemed to sink in her chest. She hoped she wouldn't get in trouble.
Theif ran and opened the door, recognizing the voice of the tutor he'd hired for Kilayla, however distorted by anger it was. Creelaw poured out of the room, her face twisted in a heated rage, her hair flying ******** YOU," she cried, stuffing her teaching things under her arm, "<******** YOUR LITTLE BRAT, AND DON'T YOU EVER ******** CALL ME TO TEACH FOR THAT ******** LITTLE MONSTER AGAIN~!"
Then, with the rattling of the windows from the slamming of the front door, Creelaw was gone, and Theif was left standing with a terribly suprised and puzzled look on his face. He only wanted to know two things: how long she'd been locked in that room, and what she'd done to deserve it.
On Making Friends
Kiki was sitting in the pile of covers watching Theif paint his toenails purple. His tail curled lazily about as he performed his task, and she thought he looked much prettier wearing the skirts that he had rather than the black pair of pants he was wearing. The look on his face was one of concentration.
"No," he was telling her, "I understand why you did it. You aren't in trouble or any thing." He gave a soft smile through the serious look on his face. "If I, however, had known that she hit you, I may have done worse to her than you did."
Kilayla wore Theif's sweater as a pajama top. He'd pulled her hair back into a tight ponytail before starting on his toes. She knew that he was there to care for her, but she wasn't sure she knew he cared for her. "How do you mean?" she asked.
Theif shook his head. "I don't really want to think about it." From where Kiki was sitting, Theif's hair obscured his face.
"In any case, who was that pink haired maid you were talking to at the ceremony?"
Kilayla blinked. "Huh?"
Theif dipped the brush of the polish back inside, then started painting again. "The one with the ears. At the Awards Ceremony."
Kilayla's eyes glazed over for a second, then she blinked. "Oh, you mean Soco! That's Soco."
"Soco? That's a nice name. What was he talking to you about?"
Kilayla gasped, and covered her mouth with both her hands. Theif glanced over and grinned. It was so cute...
"How did you know Soco was a boy?"
Theif's smile got softer around the edges as he tapped his nose, and went back to concentrating on painting his toes purple. "Once you get around my age, you can just tell..."
Kilayla made a non-committial sound in the back of her throat. "I want to go to his house. He told me he has a big library."
Theif's tail began to swish less lazily and more forcefully against the floor. Simultaniously, his ears flattened back slightly against his head. His face betrayed no emotion but concentration, though. "I bought you lots of books."
"But I want to go to Soco's house."
Theif's tail thumped loudly. "I can just take you to a public library."
"But I want...to go...to Soco's house."
Theif's tail fell limp against the carpet. "Why?"
"Because I don't have any friends." Kiki was sitting cross-legged in the covers, looking down at her hands.
Theif finished painting his toenails, closed the paint, and pushed it under the television. He sighed. "I'm your friend."
Kilayla sighed, almost seeming to mock him. "You don't count." She looked sad. Theif didn't want her to be sad. His face mirrored hers.
"Well, how about this? I'll go talk to whoever it is who takes care of Soco, and if I think Soco's good enough to be friends with you, then I'll let you hang out with him...or something."
Kilayla's eyes lit up. Theif lay on his side, looking at her, thinking 'this little girl has to grow up sometime... keeping her away from all outside contact can only hinder the process.' "Really?" she asked.
Theif sighed. He wanted to protect her from everything. "Yes, really."
Let's Watch a Movie
Theif was partial to music with dark undertones, and so it was only rational {when one takes it into concideration the frequency with which he played music} that Kiki would begin to develop dark tastes as well. He only noticed it after deciding that he'd stop trying to hide every little thing from her and let her learn about things on her own time. Gods knew she'd ask him any question that popped into her mind.
So, in a fit of dark humor one day, Theif decided to sit down and watch one of his favorite movies with her. It was a gem called something along the lines of 'The Vampire Interview.' While she did seem interested in the movie as the two lay in their pile of covers, with their heads sticking out from underneath the mosquito netting, her attention wasn't concrete until the dirty little golden-haired girl made her first appearance.
Kilayla seemed to go from mild interest {passing through all the previous fang bearing and throat biting as if she'd known about such things all along... Her humor had, over time, Theif realized suddenly, become somewhat morbid, and he--again, suddenly--suspected that she was somehow getting ahold of all the books he'd hidden from her} to fierce focus as she saw the little girl sobbing, holding the hand of her dead mother. She wondered breifly if she had a mother, then dismissed the idea in favor of absorbing every detail of this little pretty dirty girl.
When the dark haired man lifted her and bit at her neck, Kilayla gasped. Her entire face chaned from that terrible focus to a mask of distress. Theif wondered what was going on inside her head, and if those were tears he saw glimmering in her eyes. Her face held a foul expression until the little girl reappeared in a bed, alive, but still dirty, and rather weak-looking. At that moment, her face changed, and showed something like relife.
'Claudia,' the blond man on the television said, seeming to snatch a name out of the air. 'Claudia, I'm going to give you what you need to get well.' Kilayla whispered the name aloud, then, realizing that she'd done it, her eyes darted to Theif's face. He darted his eyes back to the screen, hoping she hadn't noticed him looking at her.
As the girl's skin began to pail, and her hair began to curl, a dreamy look came into Kiki's eyes. She sighed. Claudia was a little girl, like her, with curls, like her, and pale skin, like her. But she seemed so much prettier. Kilayla tilted her head until she was resting mostly on Theif's side. He cursed that he could no longer see her face.
She giggled and thoroughly enjoyed every scene with the little pale, golden-haired girl in it. "I want to learn to play the piano, Theify," she mumbled after the incident between the girl and the piano teacher.
"We'll see," he said, kissing the side of her face. "I still have to find you a new tutor."
Kiki giggled, and Theif smiled to see her curls bounce in the dim light. "I know."
...
And far too soon for Kilayla, there came the end. Not the end of the movie, mind you. The end of the pale, pretty girl. She screamed and screamed, and Kiki felt anger building in her at the stupid people who had caused her death. She began to breathe a little harder than was normal in a relaxed, movie viewing state, and Theif half hugged her and told her to "Calm down..."
She threw her hand up at the screen as if to say "But~!" Her mood went dark. It lightened up again at the sight of the dark haired vampire swinging his scythe and burning all the bad ones to the ground. She cheered during the fire, and Theif wasn't sure as to whether or not that should worry him.
When Theif had first seen the emerald-eyed little girl, she'd been very carefully inspecting a porno mag. He'd felt more flustered than he had since he'd been cornered by some 'fans' at work the week before. She'd asked him a question, and he'd tried his best to dance around it. He figured that this movie, it's mild violence and nudity, would encourage new questions in Kilayla, and he could finally give in and try his best to answer them for her, how ever embarrassing he might find it.
Finally, the movie was over. Theif cast his eyes down to the one he had claimed as his little girl. She looked up at him, and for a moment, he just looked at her pretty little face, and her bright green eyes. He was going to ask her if she had any questions about anything, but she managed to get words out before him.
"Do you have a boyfriend?"
Theif felt his face flame up. But he took in a deep breath and let it out. He wouldn't dance around the question. Or, he'd try not to. "How do you mean, babydoll?"
"I mean, like..." she gave a soft sigh, and looked down into her hands. She wasn't sure she had the words for this. "I mean, in the books I've read, there's always two people to take care of the kid..."
Theif pulled Kiki into another half hug, staring off into empty space.
"Even Claudia had two people to take care of her..."
{{i'll have to continue this later, but don't expect a strong ending...}}
{a continuation}
"Kiki," Theif started, "I don't know if I've explained this to you or not, but just because something seems normal doesn't mean that that is the way it should be." He looked back down into her bright emerald eyes, a frown creasing his brow.
The crease between her eyebrows mirrored his. "But in all the books...and on t.v. --"
"All the books I have are fiction. They're fake. Made up stories, you see. And television is rarely true to life. Don't believe everything you see, babydoll, nor everything you read. Theif crawled under his covers and got comfortable. He'd fallen into the habit of wearing shorts to sleep as of late.
When Theif's head reappeared above the blankets, Kilayla rounded on him, her hair flying out in a pretty little chestnut ark. "Claudia's not real?!?" she gasped.
Though he thought it was the worst thing he could do at the moment, Theif bursted into a fit of laughter, cut short by a swat from Kiki on the shoulder. "Why are you laughing?" she asked, looking vaguely distressed.
"I'm sorry..." he sighed, a small smile still playing on his lips. "It's just that...I thought --"
Kiki was looking at him almost tearfully, and thinking of the pretty, pale girl that was Claudia. "Nothing. Let's go to sleep now, okay?"
She looked at him warily. "Please," he said, turning from her and laying down. Kilayla didn't answer, but he soon heard the t.v. shut off, and felt a small body snuggle into his back.
"Oh, and one more thing, Kiki? Don't touch my books anymore."
Kilayla only laughed.
Build a Bear ...from HELL
Theif had been avoiding work for quite a while now...he wondered when his boss'd call and berate him.
Theif knew he'd have to pay for taking so much time off, but, meh...He had some one he needed to take care of now, and she was top priority.
When he woke up that evening, he was thinking about his trip to see Soco for Kilayla. He seemed like a good enough guy, and he'd even agreed to take over as her tutor.
Theif pulled on his sleeveless heart top before scuttling into the kitchen to make something for Kilayla and himself. While he was cooking, Kiki wandered into the living room. He could see the top of her curly brown head over the island in the kitchen.
"What would you like?" he asked. He'd already heated some frozen waffles, and set out some soymilk.
"I want a toy," Kilayla replied. She climbed up onto a stool, and Theif could see her face now. She looked very serious. "A doll."
Theif tilted his head, and pulled a couple of peaches out of the vegetable box in his refrigerator. He wondered vaguely if peaches were supposed to be in there.
"I meant for breakfast."
"Oh. I don't know. Cookies?"
Theif smiled, and set to slicing the peaches. "How about waffles?" He scratched his left leg with his right foot and thought that he'd need to either put on some long pants, or shave his legs. These shorts were only for sleeping...
"Okay. With peaches, too?" she asked, looking on as Theif sliced them.
"Yup."
Kiki grinned. "Peaches are goooooood."
"I know." Theif stopped slicing and started mincing the peaches.
"Speaking of toys--" Kiki said suddenly, after a small silence.
"We weren't," Theif said, spreading the mess of minced peaches on the hot waffles.
"But we are now, right? I want a doll."
Theif couldn't help but laugh. "Why do you want a doll?" Kilayla watched as he went back to the fridge and pulled out some meat that she couldn't identify. He put it into a pan and began to fry it. His back was turned to her.
"I just want one," she said, shrugging. Truth was, she'd seen all the dolls that Claudia {{that pretty pale girl from the movie}} had, and thought it would be nice to have one. She'd also began watching a cartoon that had this boy in the beginning who had lots of dolls.
"What about Mister Bunnikins?" Theif asked, swishing his tail back and forth. Kiki watched him do it, and wished she had a tail. Theif gestured over his shoulder with a glistening knife to the stuffed rabbit, who lay face down on the sofa.
"He's yours," Kiki replied, putting her chin in her hand. "But maybe I can get a doll like him? I think he's cool!" Her hair was all over the place, and she made no attept to get it out of her face. She bit on the sleeve of the sweater she was wearing absently.
{a continuation}
"How do you mean like Mister Bunnikins?" Theif asked, still shuffling about the kitchen.
"You know," Kiki said, tilting her head to one side. "Cute and different." She watched as Theif laughed, feeling puzzled.
"Cute and different? Different from what?"
"Different from like... things on television. I don't like those little pink babydolls that crawl and wet their pants. Why would somebody want a doll that pees on itself?"
Theif giggled, and set a plate in front of Kiki. She smelled it, and felt her mouth water. She grinned and reached out for a fork. "Do you want me to cut your waffle for you?" Theif asked.
"No," she said, "but, really." She ate a hunk of whatever meat it was that Theif had cooked, and it tasted sweet. "Who would want a doll that pees on itself?"
Theif was chewing thoughtfully. He twitched his ear as if something flew past it. "People who want to feel like real parents?"
"That's stupid," Kiki decided. Theif shrugged.
After all the food was gone, and the dishes were put away, Theif stopped Kiki, who had been running toward the front of the house. She looked up at him. "What? I mean -- yes?"
"I'll take you to go get a doll. I heard of a good place from a friend. You can make one, just as you like, and they're as you said: cute and different."
Kiki looked up at Theif, and thought for the first time that he had really pretty eyes. "You have pretty eyes, Theify," she said aloud.
Theif frowned slightly, in confusion, but smiled. He let her go. "Thanks, babydoll! Now, go get dressed."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kiki wasn't paying much attention to any of her surroundings as they made their way to the doll shop. She was thinking on things like dolls and parents, friends and "family." Theif was aware of the feirce look of contemplation {if it could be described that way} on her face during the trip. She only came back to herself once they were actually standing in front of the display of doll bases.
"I don't like these..." she mumbled. All of the dolls here had empty eye sockets and no faces. They looked like strangely colored little plushy people.
"Well, would you like them better if they had cute little faces? Or jewelry or something?"
Kiki was holding Theif's hand. She looked up at him again, and grinned. "Yeah!"
"Well, what colors do you like?"
Kiki placed a finger to her lip and thought. "I like blue...and green."
Theif reached out and touched a dark blue empty plush body. "Like this one?"
Kiki looked up at the thing. It looked so sad...no stuffing, no eyes, no nothing...
"Yes," she decided. She reached up for it with both hands. Thief pulled it down off the rack and put it into her arms. She looked so cute there, holding the empty shell of a doll that was half as big as her body, and staring at it fondly.
"Now, we can go and decide on eyes, and everything else, " Theif said, smiling softly. Kiki hugged the empty little doll tightly, both her arms wrapped around it's neck.
"Okay."
They shuffled around the store, and once they'd looked at everything four times over, Kiki had made her decisions.
Theif payed a man that made him think vaguely of Soco: he had pink hair, and wore a nurses' cap. Theif had brought just enough gold to pay for all the add-ons Kiki wanted, including the green-yellow eyes, and the heart "tattoo" that would go on the doll's forehead.
He looked down fondly at his little girl, as she clutched the empty little doll. "I'm sorry to say, Kiki, but you have to give this to the store people now."
Kiki felt her mouth pop open in objection. "But, why?!"
"They have to put the doll together for you before you can take it home."
Kilayla's face collapsed into a frown. Theif was almost shocked at how quickly it changed from bright and smiley to this crumpled, dark mess. Kiki gave up the doll base reluctantly.
"It's okay," Theif was saying as they made their way back home. "The doll will be ready just as soon as they get done putting all the things you want on."
Kiki held his hand silently. She wasn't going to talk to him.

Mail Time~!
The package was for her! For Kilayla! "Really?" she asked Theif, hope seeming to eminated beams from her eyes. Her hands were pressed to the sides of her face.
"Yup," he said, a loving smile on his lips. "It's for you! It has your name on it, doesn't it?" He placed the parcel in her lap and sat next to her on the couch. Kiki smiled broadly as she ripped into the paper covering the package, and tore the box opening it.
Inside was a blue plush doll with bright yellow-green eyes. It had a cute little smile on it's face, and a heart etched into the middle of it's forehead. The only thing it was wearing was a little black bracelet with short neon-green spikes.
"It's my doll!" she cried, thrusting the thing up into the air from underneath it's arms, then hugging it tightly.
"So, it is," Theif replied with a smile.
Kiki hopped up from her seat and danced around, "It's my doll~! It's mah doll! My doll~!"
She giggled madly, hugging the thing tightly, and rocking it back and forth.
"Are you going to give it a name?" Theif asked.
"His name..." Kilayla said, "is Nothing!" she giggled. Theif had to laugh with her that time, because that time, her eyes had rolled back up into her head when she'd laughed. Then, he stopped for a second.
"Where'd you get that name?"
"From a book," Kiki said, kissing and coddling the little blue doll.
Theif frowned slightly, but decided not to ruin her fun. He only hoped that she hadn't read too much of that particular story. >>" He wasn't ready to explain incest.

Getting A Feel of the Boymaid {or, "a visit to the Karlet household" view original here}
After placing a call, and getting a name and address, Theif found himself standing outside the Karlet man's house...or, mansion, rather. For a second, he wondered if he'd end up standing outside, staring. Theif generally didn't like intruding upon other people's lives--or going to big, expensive looking places--but this was for Kilayla, so...
...he took a deep breath and pressed on. Just like any other person would, he found his way in without trouble. Or maybe it was his improper upbringing that allowed him to pass into the house without assistance the way he did. In any case, he wound up inside the house.
Theif lowered his head as he walked down one long, silent corridor. His arms were raised slightly from his sides, as he made careful quiet steps. He wondered how many people must live in a place this size. He never really did like being in mansions. Too many doors, too many places for people to hide.
"Hello?" he called tentively. The corridor, unbeknownst to the stranger, led towards the back of the house and toward the room that housed the indoor pool. In fact, one curious Karlet critter just happened to be coming out of that room, and stopped short at the sight of someone new wandering down the darkened hallway.
The critter went into a mild panic and ducked back into the pool room. "Kaaaleb! Haaana! Soooco!" it wailed, "is a boogie monster in da hall!"
Three heads looked up at once. Hana, the tiger girl, and Kaleb, the teenager with canine accessories, were in the pool giving the youngest of the Karlets swimming lessons. Soco was sitting off to the side, out of the splash zone, and reading a book.
Kaleb climbed out of the pool and Soco set his book aside, and they approached the doorway together. Kaleb was the first to stick his head out the door while Soco flipped the lightswitch. The light revealed the true identity of the supposed "boogie monster."
"Ah, I thought it might be you," Soco said softly, stepping into the hall and giving a slight bow. "Welcome!"
"Haven't you heard of a doorbell?" Kaleb grumbled, shepharding the bawling brat back to the pool. At the sight of the boy-maid, Theif felt relieved. He didn't think that he'd stumble upon this many people. His eyes darted around the room, and he took in each face. At the welcome, he smiled gently and bowed back to Soco, winding his tail around his waist. "Thank you," he murmered. At the other pink haired boy's doorbell remark, Theif felt his face heat up. He also took notice of the puppy ears, but pretended not to. He simply lifted his chin and smiled, giving greetings respectively to everyone in the room.
Going on, he said, "Unless you're busy, Mister Soco, I'd like to have a chat with you, or perhaps your Adrian?" He put his hands behind his back, and rocked on his heels, hoping he didn't sound too unfriendly. He smiled brightly to soften the formal statement. Theif received a few nods and waves as he greeted them. The rest of the Karlet crew, many of which were still in the pool, sat and gawked at this new person who had wandered into their midst.
Soco inclined his head. "Of course. I'm sure Mr. Karlet is working upstairs. He informed me that you were coming today. This way, please." He motioned to the door and led Theif back out into the hall, closing the door to the pool room behind them. "I apologize for Kaleb's rashness," he said, though his voice revealed a vague sense of amusement. "He doesn't always remember his manners, and is quite impatient as it is." "Oh, no, no problem at all!" Theif smiled graciously, nodding, trying his best not to reguard Soco warily. He had no reason to mistrust Soco, but ...this was about Kilayla, and he thought of Kilayla as his precious little girl. One couldn't be too careful about that, could one? Theif shook his head, trying to clear the mistrustful thoughts from his head.
He followed Soco up the stairs and after a second realized he was staring. He randomly felt the urge to bite one of Soco's bunny ears. "So, you're the maid?" Soco led Theif up to the second floor, his heels clicking against the clean granite steps. The house -- from the pool room, to the entrance hall, to the second floor -- was immaculate. The brass fixtures along the walls shone, and not a speck of dust was to be found on any painting, vase, or handrail.
Soco smiled in amusement at the question. "Yes, that's one of my various titles," he replied politely. "I also serve as a butler, librarian, tutor, and babysitter." Theif felt a sudden flash of hope. Soco was a tutor? Go figure. "Hm," Theif mused aloud. "It's very nice in here."
After a breif silence he added, "You have a lot of titles...you say that you help as a tutor? Is it very busy work, all the things that you do? Or do you ever have time for yourself?" He averted his eyes again, feeling the ear-biteyness again. He uncurled his tail from around his waist and curled it down one leg.
Soco took Theif's first comment to be a compliment, feeling a brief surge of pride that his work was appreciated by someone who wasn't a mansion resident.
"Oh, yes, I'm usually quite busy," he replied. "But I do often find time for myself, in which I usually find some other duty to keep myself preoccupied and to add on another title. Really, I perform the duties out of necessity: if Mr. Karlet and the other teenagers are out, I take care of the little ones so that they don't hurt themselves or each other. If the library is looking cluttered, I rearrange the books."
He stopped at a door at the end of the hall. "One moment, please," he said before rapping his knuckles against the wood. There was no response, so he knocked once more before trying the handle. It turned in his hand, and he opened it enough to peer into the room.
Adrian was slumped over a pile of paperwork on top of his desk, and he didn't appear to be conscious.
Soco stepped inside and gave the young man a nudge. "Mr. Adrian?"
"Ngh... dun wanna go school..."
"Mr. Adrian. You've a visitor."
"Tell Raven to deal with him..."
Soco gave him another nudge. "Adrian."
The man startled awake and glanced around the room through bleary eyes. "Huh?"
"A visitor for you, sir," Soco said, gesturing to the door.
"Oh, right... Guess I shouldn't receive him in my bedroom..."
"I don't believe that would be wise until after you get to know each other, sir."
Adrian raised an eyebrow at him. Soco just smiled back. "I'll meet him in the front parlor in a minute," Adrian finally said.
Soco bowed and let himself out of the room, closing the door behind him. "Mr. Karlet will just be another moment. Would you follow me downstairs, please?" Theif heard a comment that made his face warm before Soco appeared again before him. He pretended not to have heard it.
Theif sighed as he followed Soco down the stairs again, tugging at the pink ribbon in his hair. He took it off and stuffed it into a pocket."Your Adrian Karlet sounds young to have all these little ones around," he mumbled. For some reason he felt kind of nervous to meet Karlet. He tugged at the skirt he was wearing, wishing it were longer, or that he'd worn a pair of pants instead. And a shirt with sleeves. Theif was happy he was wearing his gloves, though, or he'd feel naked.
...not that naked was a bad thing, when he was at home, or it was for a photo.
Theif unwound his tail from his leg, and wrapped it up and accross his chest. That's when he relized he was fidgiting way too much, so he stopped as they came to the foot of the stairs. Soco smiled and stifled a soft chuckle. "I suppose he is," he replied. "To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure of his exact age. He's never said, and I've never had reason to ask."
He led Theif to the right of the stairs and into the front room, gesturing to the couches and chairs there. "May I offer you something to drink while you're waiting?" Theif sat on a couch, smoothing his skirt down so his bear bottom didn't make contact with the seat, and crossed his legs. He rested his tail across his lap.
"Actually, unless you have something more important to attend to, I'd like it if you'd wait and talk with me, Mister Soco."
Theif smiled up at the boy-maid. He wanted to know more about him than his jobs around his home.
Certainly," Soco said with a bow. He settled into a chair across from Theif, smoothing his own skirt before folding his hands in his lap. He held his head at an angle, as if waiting for the man's next question. Theif looked into Soco's eyes for as long as he thought would make him uncomfortable. "Well," he said after a long, silent moment, "what do you know about me?" It was more a question to himself than to Soco. "You know I am Kilayla's guardian. You know that I love her very much? I'm sure that explains why I'd like to know you."
Theif had not looked away from Soco's eyes, nor had he blinked. He gave a gentle smile, which he usually softened further by lowering his eyes, but at this moment would not do. "Tell me about yourself, lovely. Not...not what you do around here," Theif gestured with one had vaguely, sitting up as straight as the chair allowed {speaking this way to Soco was making him forget his apprehension about meeting the Karlet man completely}, "but what you like to do. What are your hobbies?"
Soco stared back, expression unwavering as he tried to consider the intent behind Theif's questions. To him, they seemed a little odd, and he let this thought hover just outside his consciousness.
"I honestly don't know much about you, sir," he replied to the first question. "I do know that you're a guardian, and I'm sure you love your Kilayla as much as Mr. Karlet loves his kids."
Soco relaxed a little, unfolding his hands. "I don't have that many hobbies," he admitted. "I like to read. I don't seem to have any talent for music, but I do like to try and poke at the piano." He averted his eyes, glancing upwards as if trying to remember what other things he enjoyed doing. "I do go out to clubs from time to time, mostly to dance and to meet other people. I don't drink, nor do I do drugs. Other than that... I can't think of any other hobbies."
"Hm," Theif murmered, relaxing back into his seat and casting his gaze to the side.
Soco seemed like a nice sort. And had he said he poked at the piano? Kilayla had only recently told him of her interest in learning to play that particular instrument. And Theif still hadn't hired a new tutor to replace the one that she'd gotten rid of.
Perhaps he could ask Karlet...?
"No, it's okay, you don't have to think of anything else. I just kind of...wanted to get a feel of you -- for you, I mean." Theif's eyes dashed to Soco's face, then away again. He hadn't meant to say that. As he felt his face warm, Theif combed his bangs down over his eyes with his fingers and lowered his head.

part the second of the above
Soco caught the slip, but only the corners of his lips twitched in amusement. He was even more amused when Theif began turning a soft shade of red and hid his face. Karlet had the same habit whenever he started feeling self-conscious...
Speak of the devil, Adrian finally appeared in the doorway, looking more awake than he had a few minutes before. "Greetings," he said, stepping into the room and extending his hand to Theif. "Sorry to keep you waiting; I was trying to get some stuff done before you got here. I never heard the doorbell..." Theif stood in a hurry, and took Karlet's hand, shaking it firmly. He smiled, snaking his tail down and around his left leg, and pressing one hand to his cheek, wondering if his face was still tinted. "Doorbell?" Theif mumbled, then laughed a little shrilly, slightly betraying his nervousness. As if to cover it, he nodded and smiled bigger, feeling slightly foolish. "I didn't mind waiting. Your Soco and I had a nice little ch--chat."
This Karlet did seem young, but Theif was too polite to ask his age. And his hair color made Theif want to stare, but after working so long as he had where he did, he knew that most people didn't take staring as simple curiosity. Theif wondered vaguely if his smile was showing too much tooth, and changed it abruptly to a small, tight-lipped smile.
'I'm not nervous to talk to this Karlet...no, not at all,' Theif was thinking He was, in fact a bit relieved that he seemed so young as he did. Yet, as soon as he had that particular thought, he felt the nervousness again.
Here was this purple-haired man, who cared for all the little beings around his humongous house. He was probably very well versed in the ways of taking care of children, it was reasonable to think {thought Theif}. And here was Theif... He had one little one who meant the world to him, but he wasn't quite sure if he made a good parent, and now he was faced with questioning the personality of one of the members of Karlet's household to his face.
Theif looked over his shoulder at the boy-maid with the pink hair, after shaking Karlet's hand. He decided, even before beginning the conversation with Mister Karlet, that there was nothing bad about Soco, and that if Karlet willed it, Kilayla would be allowed to visit with Soco whenever she wished.
Theif realized that he was blocking the door, and moved aside, so Karlet could enter. Adrian shook Theif's hand, smiling warmly as the visitor betrayed his nervousness. He gave a quick glance over the man's shoulder, catching Soco's grin. "Oh, did you, now?" Adrian said, turning his attention back to Theif. "I hope he was good company for you."
He waited patiently under Theif's appraising eye. Dressed in a t-shirt and blue jeans, Adrian hadn't felt the need to be formal for this meeting. He gave the man his own once-over, eye catching a glimpse of a furred tail by the man's leg. Adrian's eyes flicked back up to Theif's face and got an eyeful of that toothy grin.
What an odd felinoid, Karlet mused to himself.
After a moment, Theif finally moved out of the doorway. Adrian gestured to the man's seat and sat in a chair nearby.
Soco stood and bowed slightly. "Is there anything I can get you, gentlemen?"
"I could go for some lemonaide," Adrian said. He jokingly thought that their visitor could use one of many things, but refrained from mentioning them, lest the man became offended. "Unless it's too much trouble, I'd like a cup of coffee, Mister Soco," Thief said, sinking back down into his seat, and trying to smile graciously. "No milk, and lots of sugar...but only if it's not too much trouble."
Theif shifted his weight so that he could get his tail out from under his leg, and began thumping it quietly against a cushion of the couch he was sitting on. He honestly thought he'd regained his composure, but his tail was betraying him...again.
He looked over at Karlet, and had the sudden desperate wish that he'd worn pants rather than a skirt for the second time since entering the mansion. Though the point was usually to make himself look more feminine, he felt Karlet might not take him seriously dressed as he was.
"I'm not sure I introduced myself..." Theif said. He leaned over the arm of his couch and extended a gloved hand again. "You can call me Theif." He felt apprehensive. "No trouble at all, sir," Soco said politely. He bowed once more before leaving the room.
Adrian shook the offered hand again. "Theif? Then you can call me Adrian, if you'd like," he said. Sitting back in his seat, he smiled at the guest. "I hope Soco has done his best to make you feel at home. There's no need for nervousness around here; we're an easy going family."
He kept his eyes locked on Theif's. Although it wasn't unusual for the male members of the Karlet household to run about wearing skirts, Adrian felt a tugging compulsion to stare at the man's outfit.
"Forgive my absentmindedness," Adrian said, "but why exactly are you here, again?" Theif felt his face prickle with heat as Adrian stared him down in the same fashion he'd done Soco. He turned his eyes to study the wall behind Karlet's head, as he coughed into his hand, covering a small smile.
Theif had, in fact come to do recon on Soco before he made the decision on whether or not his Kiki would be allowed to come visit. Soco and the library were the reasons she wanted to visit...
Now, Theif trusted the boy-maid, so for a second he didn't know how to answer the question. After a small silence, he crossed his legs and said airily, "I was only wondering if my little girl, Kilayla could come visit with your Soco. She likes the idea of your library...and she seems to admire your Soco, too."
Theif smiled brightly, still trying not to feel too nervous. "Of course she may," Adrian said. "If he wants to have friends over, he's perfectly welcome to." He snickered softly, remembering the night of the pagent when he'd told Soco to go and make friends. Of course the first person the teen went to was a little kid of a girl.
"I hope the library lives up to her expectations, though," he added. "It's not all that grand, but I suppose there might be a few books she'd enjoy."
Soco returned to the room with a tray in hand. He distributed the drinks silently, and then stood waiting for orders.
"Would you like to join us for a moment, Soco?" Adrian asked. "We were just talking about having your friend come over to visit."
"Certianly," Soco said, smiling as he took his seat again. "So, it's okay?"
"Of course, of course," Adrian waved him off. "When has it never been okay to have people come over?"
"I can name one."
"Well, besides him."
Soco inclined his head. "It's always been okay."
Adrian sipped his lemonaide. "Precisely." He looked up at Theif then; he hadn't meant to leave him out of the conversation. "So, was there anything else you had on your mind?" Theif blew gently on his coffee, smiling vaguely. He looked up at Adrian's question.
"Actually, yes. I was kind of wondering..." Theif paused.
"You said that you tutor the little ones here, Soco," he said to the pink-haired boy. "Well..." he said to Karlet, "Kiki and her tutor had a bit of a...falling out." Theif laughed brightly. "And, she's shown interest in playing piano."
Theif heaved a sigh, and sipped from his coffee, curling his tail across his lap. He feared rejection, but he asked anyway. "Do you think that she could take lessons from Soco? I could pay..." Adrian glanced at Soco, figuring the teen could answer the questions that pertained to him.
Soco glanced back at Adrian before turning to Theif. "Like I said before, I don't have any great talent for it," he said. "I've only had a little training, and the rest I play by ear."
"You're better than anyone else in this house," Adrian reminded him.
"Maybe so, but..." Soco paused, considering. "I wouldn't expect much in the way of pay, if I received any at all." "Oh, no!" Theif cried. "I couldn't ask for any favors. I'd be glad to pay you for your services."
Theif smiled cheerily, then repeated the last sentence inside his head. As he felt himself blush slightly, he wondered if anyone else had a mind as filthy as his.
Theif lowered his head to stare into his coffee. Certainly Adrian had a dirty mind, and the wide smirk across his face betrayed him. He quickly took another sip of lemonaide to hide it.
Even Soco was amused by the comment, but kept his expression even. His polite smile didn't waver, but his voice was dripping with suggestion as he said, "I'd be glad to offer my services, then. When would you like to start?" Theif had looked back up at Soco. And when the words left Soco's lips, Theif felt his mouth pop open slightly and his eyes glaze over as an image overwhelmed his mind. In it, there was flesh.
He bannished the thought from his mind and came back to himself a split second later, face burning. He put a gloved hand to his forehead and crossed his legs more tightly. "We-- I--" he sputtered. He looked up helplessly from Adrian to Soco and back again. "Er, you can--whenever you like!" Theif heaved a sigh, eyes wide. He felt horrified. He wished he wasn't so easily unsettled by the thoughts in his own head. Adrian and Soco shared a look, and the guardian choked on his drink as he tried to cover up his laughter. Soco played innocent, save for the soft smirk that was tugging at his lips.
Adrian finally recovered and reached over to pat Theif's shoulder. "I hope you're not reconsidering letting Kilayla come over," he said. "He's not usually this much of a... pain." He smiled at Soco quickly.
"We can start as soon as she'd like to," Soco said, choosing to ignore Adrian's comments.
Theif gave Adrian a distressed look, then cleared the look from his face to give Soco an appreciative smile {though it was still affected by a slight crease in his brow}. He willed himself to calm down and took a gulp of his coffee, which scalded his mouth.
'Oowwww...' he thought. The pain was unsettling, and Theif found himself calm again, though he knew he'd be tasting rubber for a week.
"Thank you Mister Adrian, Mister Soco," he said aloud. He stood, bowing slightly to each in turn, and setting the cup he'd been holding down on an intable. "I'm know Kiki'd love to see you soon, but you might care to know that she keeps relatively nocturnal hours." The two stood with Theif as he rose from his seat. Soco nodded and said, "That's fine, my evenings are usually free... except for this weekend."
"Otherwise, just about any other evening would be fine," Adrian cut in, leading the way into the entrance hall, since that seemed to be the direction Theif was heading.
Theif smiled and followed Adrian. "Thank you, both of you."
He glanced back at Soco, with his smile looking a little sad and said, "Kiki's been so lonely." "Not a problem," Adrian said, waving his hand in the air. "Anytime."
"Poor girl," Soco murmured. He followed after the two adults, and then quickly moved to open the door. "Hopefully we'll be able to remedy that, soon," he said with a nod.
Theif smiled brightly, trying to change his suddenly saddened frame of mind. "So, there's the door!"
"So, there it is!" Adrian replied cheerily. "Thanks for coming by, and give us a call anytime you need!" "Of course!" Theif bowed again, to both Adrian and Soco, then scuttled off and away.

Kiki's First Playdate {with a teenage boy?! view original here}
Soco had finished his chores at the Kanth/Karlet mansion early this day, and was at a loss as to what to do with himself. He'd checked the floors twice to make sure he hadn't overlooked anything. For lack of anything better to do, he picked up one of the many books he was in the middle of, and took off to Bass'ken Lake.
The weather was beautiful: warm, little humidity, and a crystal-clear sky. He hadn't bothered to change out of his main outfit -- the maid outfit plus nurse's hat -- but it was light and airy enough that he wouldn't overheat in it. He made a mental note to look into getting another one, soon; he was beginning to outgrow it.
The lake wasn't overly busy this day, and he settled under a tree close to the water. The rough bark of the tree pressed against his back, but he paid no attention, turning to the page he'd left bookmarked. He lost himself in the pages of the novel, paying little attention to his surroundings.
It took them a while on foot, but at some point, Theif and Kilayla made it to the lake. They'd called over to Adrian's house, and found that Soco had gone. At some point in the convorsation, the two found out where Soco was.
When they were back at home, Theif had said to Kiki, "It might be cold on the lake, so I want you to put this on." He'd pulled a long-sleeved, dark colored shirt over her head. She'd run off and put on her green heart top over it, even though Theif wasn't wearing his today.
And here they were.
How they had managed to end up on the same end of the lake as Soco was a mystery. As Theif watched from a short distance, Kiki creeped up from behind the tree. "Soco~!" she said in a sing-song voice, then moved over to the other side of the tree, hiding.
Theif's eyes got big. He couldn't exactly hide, could he? He turned his back and whistled, swishing his tail. If he didn't see Soco, Soco couldn't see him, right? Kiki had done an admirable job of sneaking up on Soco. The boy jumped a little at the voice behind him, but quickly smiled and glanced around. He didn't see her -- but he did see her guardian, who was standing nearby and pretending not to be visible.
Soco set his book in the grass beside him and glanced around the other side of the tree. "Kilayla~?" he called back. "Where are you~?" Theif glanced back over his shoulder at Kiki, who was pressed giggling to the tree. He hadn't seen much of this playful behavior from Kiki during the time they'd been together. It made him happy. And kinda' sad.
"Shh!" she hissed at Theif when he looked at her, a broad smile on her lips. She snaked her head around the side of the tree. Theif laughed when she came face to face with Soco and gasped. Her ponytail had jumped, so she probably hadn't expected it.
Kilayla collapsed into laughter, then covered her face.
Theif grinned, then looked to Soco. His face went slightly serious. "I know that this is your you time, but can I ask that you watch Kiki for me for a while?" Soco laughed as Kiki burst into giggles.
He hadn't laughed like this in a long time. Certainly not infront of anyone at the Karlet mansion...
He looked up at Theif, a grin taking the place of his usual shy smile. "Of course," he replied, still giggling. "It's no problem at all." "Thank you, Soco! Lifesaver, you are." Theif cried, smiling. "You can't imagine how helpful this is." He'd walked over and taken one of Soco's hands and patted it as he was saying,"If I come back and don't find you two here, I'm going to assume you're both at the mansion, yes?"
Without waiting for an answer, he hugged Kiki tightly and said, "See you sweety. Be good." He kissed her forehead, then tromped off and away.
"'Bye..." Kiki was saying quietly, waving. She looked a little sad. "Of course, check with the mansion," Soco said quickly. "I doubt we'll go too far, but I'll let someone know, if we do."
The teen inwardly "awwed" as Theif and Kiki said their goodbyes. It was cute. And then sad.
"Cheer up, honey," he told Kiki softly. "He'll be back soon. We'll go hang out and do stuff and the time will just fly by." He then got an idea that made him smile mischevously. "Guess what?" Kiki's eyes peeked up at Soco from underneath her wavy bangs. She didn't smile, but didn't look sad, either. Kilayla was about to say 'what?' but Theif had told her that it was impolite.
She pursed her lips, then said instead, "Yes?" Soco's smile widened into a grin as he stepped in close and gently poked Kiki's nose. "You're 'it,'" he whispered. He then backed away quickly to see if she would give chase. If not, oh, well. He'd try and find something else to cheer her up with. Kiki's hand flew to her nose, and her mouth popped open. She tried to jump onto him, grip his shirt in both hands, but as soon as she was there, he seemed to be gone!
Soco snickered as he ducked behind a tree, peeking around it at Kiki. "Come and get me~" he called quietly. Kiki grinned widely, and ran after Soco, giggling madly. She stopped just short of the tree, then went down on her knees. She crawled around the bottom of the big, scratchy-barked thing and reached out to try and grab Soco's ankle. Soco danced around the tree, trying to stay just out of her reach. He then tripped on an inconveniently placed root and fell on his a---bottom, giving Kiki plenty of opportunity to tag him. Even as he sat there with a sore butt, he was smiling. Kiki giggled shrilly, and scrambled to her feet. She barreled {as much as someone her size can 'barrel'} into Soco at the top speed she could accomplish, her hair flying. "OOF!" Soco grunted as Kiki flew against him. He caught her in his arms and pulled her down as he fell backwards. He tried to laugh even as his lungs tried to regain the wind that had been knocked out of them.
It was difficult, needless to say... but the laugh came from deep within his stomach, and he found himself helpless to stop it.
He loosened his grip sometime during his episode, and he held a hand to his face to hide his grin as he stared up at the girl sitting on his stomach. "Guess I'm 'it,' again, huh?" he asked. Kiki breifly wondered as she was falling if anybody would get hurt. She ended up sitting on Soco's stomach, staring down at him. He began to laugh, a loud, startling sound. Kilayla couldn't help laughing along with him, a high pitched, shrill sound. Her hands flew to her cheeks as she laughed.
Soco asked if he was 'it' again.
Kiki gasped. "You're it!" she cried. She scrambled up off of him, eyes wide and full of laughter. "You're it!" He hair had all fallen from her ponytail some time during the tumble, and it framed her face as well as stuck up in a few places.
She began to give that mad giggle again, and ran off in the direction of the water, yelling over her shoulder, "You can't catch meee~!"
"I'm gonna get you!" Soco called after her. He got to his feet and took off after her. He saw where she was headed -- saw the roots and the rocks close to the water's edge -- and put on an extra burst of speed. His long legs helped him to catch up to her quickly.
It was odd that, before he'd moved in with the Karlet's, he had never had to run so much. He still wasn't in very good shape, but it hadn't caught up to him, yet. Kiki was giggling madly. She heard Soco behind her, and turned her head to yell to him, "Can't catch me~!" She gasped halfway through the sentence, though, because Soco had sped up. Kiki screamed with laughter in her voice and tried to run faster. Running felt so fun.
Kilayla turned her head back foreward, and her hair whipped into her eyes. "Oww!" she cried. After a second, she began to panic. Her first instinct was to stop and pull her hair out of her face, but that turned out to be a bad idea.
When she stopped, her body wanted to keep going, and keep going it did. Kiki saw the grass, Soco, the sky, then the grass again. Somewhere in the back of her head she thought, green and blue, are so pretty... Soco reached out and got an arm around Kiki's waist, swooping her up and away from the drop-off and back to safe ground. "Got you!" he said with a sigh of relief.
He took another shaky breath as he set her back on her feet and brushed the hair from her eyes. "Kiki..." he hesitated, trying to decide if he should chastise her or not. It wasn't really her fault, after all. "How about no more tag, for now, okay?" Kiki's mind was reeling as she was set back down on her feet. She felt her face crumple, but she refused to cry. She grabbed onto Soco, breathing heavily.
"S-s-sorry," she stuttered. Kilayla felt her throat closing up. In response, she rubbed her eyes on her sleeve...which left her face with a brown smear down the side. Soco responded to the clinging with a tight hug of his own. He held her close until her breathing settled down. "It's okay," he murmured, "you're fine, now." He pulled away as she rubbed at her eyes. Blinking at the brown smear, he reached into his pocket for a handkerchief and wiped it away.
"There." He smiled faintly. "Would you like to stay here at the lake for a little while, or go to the mansion?" Kiki sighed and stuck her finger into a hole that had appeared in the knee of her plain black pants. She looked back up to Soco, an expression on her face that was somewhere between a smile and a frown.
After a second, Kiki said hopefully, "Maybe we can go see your library?" and plucked a blade of grass from the curls on her shoulder. Soco gave her a nod and another smile. "Of course," he said. "And I can sew that hole back up for you, if you'd like."
He glanced around for his book and quickly found it. He held it in one hand, while offering Kiki the other. "To the mansion!"
Kiki grinned and took Soco's hand. "Yaaaaaaaaaaaay~!" she cried, as they set off.
And so, the two set off for the Karlet mansion, hand in hand, with the birds singing their joys of the day.
