The sand crunched beneath her heels as she continued to walk across the golden sand, Marshall calling her name echoed in her ear, making her turn to face him. Before she could say much, Marshall had removed his vest and tossed it aside.

She froze up instantly. He was apologizing for the hugs, which she in fact loved, exposing his bare chest, and coming ever closer to the nervous woman. Is that how people in the real world say they were sorry? She hastily grabbed ahold of her face with her hands to hid her blushing.

"P-please stay-ay aw-way!" It was the only thing she could utter. She was trying to get her tongue to work properly enough to explain why, but it felt shriveled and dried in her mouth. She could feel the heat radiating of her face onto her hands. The blush wouldn't go away.

"P-please stay-ay aw-way!"

Marshall stoped in his tracks as soon as this left her mouth. His heart sank into his stomach, his chest feeling like it was caving in on him. Was what he did that vile? Was he that appaling? He had a dumbfounded look of shock on his face.

He looked away, a pained look crossing him. What was said hit him like a mallet. She didn't even want him near her. He slowly looked back, looking her in the eyes. Those haunting, crystal blue eyes that he had fallen in love with. He tried to say some thing, any thing. But...the words just wouldn't come.

He turned around and started to walk away. First slowly, then quicker, and eventually into a full-on sprint. He didn't even pick up his flash-light or vest. He just kept running. He fought a losing battle with his tears as he ran away.

I'm just a crappy, loser artist. She couldn't have liked me. I was stupid to think other wise...

Her heart began to beat faster with each step he took...and then he just stopped. Her hands still covered her flushed cheeks as she watched Marshall.

Was it what I had said? Oh dear lord, what have I done.... Her brain finished processing what she had said. She had told him to stay away, all because she was astonished by his chest and had started to blush frantically.

He looked at her with a hard look in his eyes, which made her feel like a completely heartless woman who had crushed a man's heart. Which is exactly what she had done. She watched as Marshall gradually quickened his pace as he went away from her. Tears streamed down her face. She had done the worst thing ever in her entire life.

Iona sluggishly moved towards his fallen vest, now covered in sand. Lightly brushing off the sand, she moved towards the ocean waters that were constantly creeping upping the land and bent down to wash in off. Her mind pounded at her and her face was streaked with tears. Washing his vest was the least she could do for what she'd done. She had decided that once it was clean she'd return it and the flash light to him, unless he came back himself to get the items.

Marshall wasn't sure why he started running in the first place, or why he continued to. The still-rising sun beat down on his back, but he didn't seem to care. However, this trance ended as soon as he was back at his duplex. "...STUPID!" he roared, forgetting about his neighbours as he slammed his fist into his door. His fist made an uncomfortable "crack" against the wooden frame. It obviously didn't break the door or (luckily) his hand, but it hurt enough to relieve some anger.

He entered his duplex, slamming the door behind him. He wasn't angry at Iona, he doubt he could ever really be mad at her, but he was angry at himself. For believing that he had found some one he cared for. Some one that made him feel...needed. He let his bare back fall against the door, sliding down to the plush carpet. "...Stupid..." the shirtless man said, pulling his knees up to his chest.

"You...You really scared Iona...And pissed off your neighbours..." he whispered to himself, "...Iona..." he repeated. That look in her eyes...Was that pity? Disgust? Or...

...Ever stop and think maybe it was some thing good, moron?

The long trek back to her apartment took it's toll on Iona. She had removed most of the stain and grime from the vest, but the remainder of it would have to be washed with clean water and soap instead of salty sea water. Opening the door to her building, she placed the vest and flashlight on a chair and gently closed the door.

"God curse my senseless state of mind...." Iona muttered under her breath. The dress she was wearing was now covered in sand and sweat, which was now beginning to stick horribly to her skin. But that wasn't the only thing on her mind, she had hurt Marshall without even thinking about it. Iona continued to mumble to herself and made her way to the bathroom. A nice bath would do wonders for her, maybe clear her thoughts and give her time on how to approach the situation.

While the bathtub filled with running water, Iona stripped out of her dirty clothing and climbed into the warm liquid. She turned the nob and the water ceased flowing. Iona sunk lower in to the water, till her chin was above the water line, her gaze transfixed on the bathtub's faucet. ".....What am I to do?"

Several hours passed, and the young man had yet to leave his duplex to retreive his vest and flash-light. Mostly out of fear that Iona would still be there. Having put on a green button-up shirt he owned, one of the few articles of cloathing he DID own mind you, he had done some thing that made him feel like a highschool student:

He sat around and moped. Or, to be more perceise, he lied on his bed, stared at the ceiling, and moped. But honestly, details details.

I guess I was kind of out of line hugging her...Even if it did feel nice...Really, really nice... he thought, closing his eyes. Mind you, as he attempted to nap (or, perhaps, just mope with his eye closed) a familiar sound filled the room.

"GUUUURRRRRRGGGLLLEEE!!!" went his stomach. Marshall sighed. He did skip breakfest this morning, and it was about lunch time. Slowly opening his eyes, he got to his feet. "Maybe some lunch will clear my head..." he thought, putting his sandals on as he walked out his door.

I might even find a way to apologise to Iona...

The bath water was gone from the tub and freshly clean clothes were donned. The smell of lilac shampoo had filled her room and a window was propped open to let the smell waft outside. Iona walked over to where she laid the now washed vest and flash light.

"I best return these to him. He will most likely need them more than I do....." She looked out the window. Time had flown by, but it did not feel as if it had been so. She heard the click of a door being closed and the TWACK! of sandals in the distant. "Must be one of the others...," she said to herself.

The clock, that hung on the wall opposite of the door, ticked slowly. It read past Iona's normal lunch time. She draped the vest over her left arm and picked up the flashlight as well. Sighing heavily, her feet slipped into the shoes placed beside the door. Her brain was too jumbled to even think straight. Should I find Marshall? What should I say? What am I to do? She slowly opened the door to the outside and followed the path down into the village.

"Okay...Don't be subtle. Psh, like I ever was. Just flat out say it. 'Iona, I'm sorry!' There! That wasn't so hard!" Marshall said to himself, confident that he was alone. Of course, hunger always dulls the senses.

Marshall entered the cafeteria, bewildered by how empty it was. Then again, this would be a rather late lunch for most Islanders. Except for Rex, who seemed to be eating a steak just about every hour on the hour.

Marshall looked around, before skipping over most of the food and went straight for the dessert bar. Despite his rather confident words just moments earlier...He was still nervous beyond reason. And when Marshall gets nervous, he does what a large majority of them do...He eats sweets.

"Okay, I'm sorry! There...Not hard at all..." he grumbled, adding another cookie to his plate. Nothing says "I'm a nervous wreck" like a sugar buzz!

He closed his eyes, letting out a small sigh. He pictured her standing in front of him; those blue-green eyes, that fair skin, he long blonde hair. He never was partial to yellow, but...For some reason he liked it on her.
I'd like any thing on her...

The smell of food from the cafeteria was intoxicating. She got a whiff of the scents as she walked closer to "town hall". "I did skip breakfast this morning..." She reminded herself, while her stomach made twists and knots inside.

She gently pushed open the doors, not wanting to drop the clean clothing. Hardly anyone was inside the food court, except for a man who was standing over by the sweets. He seemed to be talking to himself. Placing down the belongings she brought along on a table, she headed directly for the salad bar. Every so often she would look, from the bar, at the green-shirted man and his every growing pile of cookies.

"Sir?" She tentatively asked, setting down her plate of greens. "Is everything all right?" The man looked familiar from behind, but the clothing didn't click with the people she'd met on the island.

Marshall paused, dropping the plastic tongs he had been using mechnically. He didn't turn around and look at her, he was kind of...stuck.

Ohshitohbloodyhellitsher! I'drecognisethataccentanywhere! ohshit! okaysayitnowwhatthehelll...ARRRRRRGGGGHHHH!!! went the jumbled thoughts of the neurotic cartoonist.

"Erm...I'm...Fine...Thank you." he managed to say, beet-red, keeping his head down. Pissing off your neighbours first thing in the morning does bring a certain level of embarassment. But having the person you like catch you in the middle of a sympathy-enduced cookie raid...Well thats just humiliating.

She smiled. At least the man was fine....or so it seemed. She pulled out a chair and sat down to eat the late lunch she fixed. Before taking a bite, she looked back towards the dessert man.

"I do not wish to bother you again, but have you seen Marshall? I am not quite sure if you know him, but I need to find him and return his belongings to him." Not waiting for the relpy, Iona turned back to her salad and began to munch on the leaves of lettuce.

Maybe Marshall is at his duplex. I should have checked there first before coming to eat lunch. We could have talked everything out over a nice meal perhaps.

Marshall began to hastily put the cookies back, using the back of his hand as opposed to the tongs or his fingers. As soon as she asked him if she knew where Marshall was. Which of course, was silly, because Marshall was right there, so of course Marshall knew where Marshall was!

Not really having much of a choice in the matter now, he slowly turned around with the now smaller (but still rather large) plate of cookies. "Um...Hello there Iona..." he said with a nervous chuckle, "Um, I was, um...Getting a bit of a snack? Eh heh heh..."

Lord, please strike me down before this gets any more embarassing...

She heard the man say her name. "Oh, so you know my name?" Iona turned around to face him and froze, dropping her fork onto the floor.

"It-it is you! Oh my.....how foolish of me to not realize....," she quickly spoke and turned back to her food. I am the most dimwitted person on this entire island! He was Marshall this whole time and I barely recognized him!

Her face flushed a bright beet-red. Luckily, she managed to find her voice this time around and confronted Marshall. "I-I brought you your vest and flashlight." She motioned with a hand towards the two objects on the table top.

Marshall, still slightly embarassed about being caught in a sweets raid, smiled as she motioned to the possesions he left at the beach earlier. "Oh! Thank you for getting them for me!" he said cheerfully. His cheerful expression quickly turned serious. This is mostly because he remembered that he needed to apologise to her. Such a forgetful soul...

"Um, Iona...I wanted to apologise for this morning. I was, um...Out of line...Hugging you like that. I hope you don't see me as some deranged pervert or any thing." he said, over-thinking the situation as usual.

"So, um...Mind if I eat with you?"

"Apologize?" This stunned her, because she thought it was all her fault. Keeping quite, she listened to what Marshall had to say.

"A deranged pervert? Over a friendly hug?" Giggles escaped her lips. The giggles stopped as quickly as they began and Iona smiled. "Do not be silly Marshall. I was in no way offended by the hugging......" She paused, not wanting to say what did make her back away from him.

"And I would be honored if you could join me," she said as she picked up the dropped fork. Scooting back her chair and walking to where the silverware was, Iona got a clean fork and proceeded back to the table, smiling along the way.
