Give him a chance? Was there ever any other option? It just seemed like the right thing to do, though he wasn’t even sure he’d have described it like that. Riker had said he picked on him, or wasn’t very nice, but Julian really couldn’t recall anything particularly biting or harsh. He didn’t remember Riker hurting his feelings.
Giving him a chance had been the same as meeting Elliot, or Atticus, or Luke. Riker was there, Julian was there.
By chance.
“You’re really special to me too, Riker.”
He held him for a moment, content in the silence they shared. He could have stayed in the hug for as long as Riker wanted, and he wasn’t in any hurry himself.
Softer, as if Zac could hear through the walls, he murmured, “I’m sure Zac did a good job. And if it’s not soundproofed enough…well, I won’t say it’s his fault! I’ll ask him if I can help fix it so we can play as loud as we want. I can show you the basics of what I know, but there might be a lot that we have to learn together. But I’d like that a lot, Riker.”

“If it’s not soundproofed enough then he’ll just have to come up and fix it,” Riker laughed, but he pulled back and nodded to Julian.
“Yeah, we can learn together. I’m good with that. We can look up YouTube videos and stuff. Maybe get you a lute you can practice with here,” he suggested with a small grin.
And, because he couldn’t help but marvel over his gift, he picked up the guitar again to hold, trying it out and strumming the strings a few times.
There was a part of him that was glad Julian would have an excuse to play his violin without feeling like he was burdening anyone or wasting anyone’s time. If they were both practicing, then maybe he wouldn’t feel so out of place.
Despite the broken gifts that still needed to be replaced, and the events leading up to that incident, this had been the best Christmas Riker had ever had.
