(Painted Moose via Discord 8/10) “The fastest?” She mused, and gave a little hmm. It wasn’t the shape he was after so much as something appealing to the eye so she needed to stay away from the more muted variants. There was one that was almost rust colored she would have put money on in a race, but to pick the flashiest…Well, that was easy. “Red and orange are like fire, so you know they’re fast, but gold and yellow? That’s lightning. Nothings faster than lightning.”
She may have been a little biased to the color, but there wasn’t anything wrong with that.
“Blue would be good for strength though, just in for the future. Water can do a lot of damage If it wants to.”

(9/10) Sure, color didn't really have any effect on how fast a piplet could swim, but Saewulf didn't know that. Or care, really. Maybe he'd feel bad about the duller colored piplets being left unpicked, but if he was only able to have one he wanted it to be cool. As she mused, he listened intently, fishing the tiny clay cup he'd brought with him out of his satchel.
Yeah... lightning really WAS fastest. But ... he pursed his lips, then dipped his cup into the water. The piplets erupted into movement, showing their true speeds by zooping quickly away from his fishing hands - but one wasn't fast enough to dodge his cup.
It was a darker blue, almost navy, and the tiny spines on its body were tipped with just a bit of yellow. That meant it was sorta fast, right?
... Sae almost felt guilty, watching the little fish panic and swim in circles in the tiny cup. For the first time since coming up with this plan, he wondered if the piplet would be lonely, away from all its siblings...

“…You know, I think If I were going to keep one I’d keep it out here. That way I could visit whenever I wanted but no one would find out.” She dipped her finger into the edge of the water, a little saddened when the already frantic things scurried away from her. “I don’t really know what kinds of food to give them or how much room they need so if I kept them here, with their family, I could watch and learn.”
She didn’t exactly want to tell the child his plan was a bad one. He might very well be able to take care of it, but then again…Wouldn’t it be nice to see the piplet grow where it was happiest? And also not, for example, stuffed into a jar underneath some kids bed? Like she was scared might happen?

... He'd really wanted to have it back at home, where he could watch it swim and marvel at it. ... But right now, all he felt was guilty. So when Mina said just as much, he looked at her eagerly, relief palpable in the slump of his shoulders.
"Maybe... maybe if I visit enough he'll like me and play with me out here?" He thought out loud. Before he could regret it, Sae carefully dumped the cup back into the pool, sighing with disappointment (or relief, he couldn't tell) when the little fish hurried to the corner of the tide pool to crowd next to its family.

(Painted Moose via discord 10/10) She reached over to put a hand on his shoulder and give it a comforting squeeze. It was hard, putting the best interests of others before your own wants, but to see that shift in one so little was an uplifting thing. She just hoped he kept that kind heart as he grew older.
“He might. Maybe when you go home you can investigate what kinds of treats they like and give them to him? I’m sure he’d love it.” When the piplet was well and truly ‘safe’ with it’s family Mina moved to stand and offered him her hand. “Alright then, let’s get going.”
While she still wasn’t sure exactly whose child it was Mina knew she could always take him to his grandmother. How very like someone in that family, to be so drawn to animals like that; almost as if it were in the blood.
