Brooklyn swallowed and slowly nodded, pressing the heels of her hands into her eyes for a long moment and then dropping them. “I’ll…talk to him tomorrow. Do…” She hesitated and gave a sigh. “Do you think I’d be able to spend the night at one of your places tonight? If not that’s totally okay, there’s a place I’m allowed to squat at! So it’s not too big of a deal if I can’t!”
…It would just be more comfortable to stay with friends...
Still, it was an imposition, and she was prepared if she was told no. “I’ll talk to him tomorrow. It’ll…all work out. And I’ll…” She wrinkled her nose. “I’ll…if he can get things settled…if I can…” Her voice broke, despite trying so hard to keep it steady.
“If I can go back to school...I’ll…reach out to Dagon again…and really…see if we can settle things…She’s. The one who said…that she was my mom? In the past? I don’t know. It was like. A fairy tale that’s way too good to be true and I keep trying to just…” She shrugged and hesitated, moving closer to Atticus and Elliot again, hoping for another hug. Hoping for some kind of contact, but far too afraid to ask.

Atticus was working so hard to hold himself together. Elliot knew how difficult his life had been, and he knew how much he’d had to go through just to get to where he was today. He was proud of Atticus and rubbed his back even as he opened an arm to invite Brooklyn for a hug. She looked like she needed another one.
Though Elliot wanted to take a moment to gently wipe his sleeve over Atticus’ cheeks, or kiss him silly, he’d have time for that later. He could hold it together for a few minutes, for Brooklyn’s sake.
“I can ask my dads if you can crash with us. I’m sure it’ll be fine. Especially since you’re going through some things. They’d definitely want to make sure you go back to school. ‘A good education is the cornerstone to a strong future’, you know. So yeah, do we need to stop anywhere to pick up your stuff or are you in a ‘just me and the clothes on my back’ kind of way right now?”

Atticus knew how difficult it must have been for Brooklyn. He was doing his best to calm himself, and Elliot’s gentle affection, no matter how little, was enough to get him to breathe at least.
He shifted to the side and followed Elliot’s lead with holding his arm out for Brooklyn to join them in another hug. He had a lot of tears he still needed to get out, but he would have to put on a brave face and make sure she was okay before focusing on himself again. He didn’t want to be selfish when she was clearly having trouble.
“And maybe when we’re settled, you can tell us about your mom? Well… the one in the past that you are going to reach out to. Fairy tales aren’t as impossible to find as you might think,” he promised, blinking away the lingering tears so he could offer her a smile.
He knew it would be tough trying to get things figured out, but as long as they worked things out together, they could accomplish anything.
