New York City might be the place that never sleeps but one could be hard pressed to find a place more exciting than New Orleans during Mardi Gras. Despite it being in the dead of winter the town, specifically the French Quarter, bustled with the vibrancy of life. Hundreds of thousands of people flock to the celebration every year and this year was no different. The tourists and the locals were not disappointed by the celebrations this year. After the plagues and quarantines of years prior, the city threw itself into the celebrations.
Celebrations which covered up the ugly truth of the city. 265 people were murdered in 2022 and 245 people suffered the same fate the following year. That was over 21 people per month that had their lights extinguished. Only around fifty-four percent of those murders were solved. And that was only the amount of designated murders - more people had gone missing on top of that. New Orleans wasn't unique in it's high crime and death rate but the amount of death and missing just barely past a month into the year of 2024 was staggering. 50 people had been reported missing and 15 bodies had been found in states so gruesome that the reports had not yet been made public. On top of that, human bones picked clean and haphazardly arranged in small, extremely shallow graves had been popping up all over the national park as well as the tree line beyond the city.
The amount had caused more than one head to turn. Not that someone would be able to tell that during the all mighty celebration of Mardi Gras. Some of these concerns came from above and below…the gods had taken notice. Each victim had one thing in common that had caught their attention. They were forced to cry out to a different god during their torment. And their screams echoed up and down in a tortured symphony strong enough to evoke either the pity or the curiosity of the gods they called for.
And so the gods called for their children to investigate what was happening and to put a stop to the death of the people who would cry out for them in moments of such pain. Unfortunately without much more than a general location to go off of, those that answered the call would have to do some investigating of their own to fulfill such a request. Hopefully they don't get too swept up in the festivities to solve these gruesome deaths.
